Playful Kiss: Episode 8

Episode 7 was the first one I connected with on an emotional level (there was something in my eye, I swear), so I had higher expectations going into 8. We’re definitely in a better place than previous weeks, and I do think that this show actually improves from week to week.

Truthfully, it still hasn’t gripped me, but I enjoy it immensely, as the characters are all so lovely, quirky, and sweet. I think the style of the show is actually a nod to 50s Japanese cinema—it has that retro vibe to me, and it’s paced like an Ozu film, full of ellipses and driven by character rather than story. It’s not a horse that’s going to win any races, but it’s the underdog that keeps chugging along, just like Ha-ni would.

EPISODE 8 RECAP

Ha-ni looks out her window in her room above the noodle shop wistfully. Dad comes up and tells her it’s just a temporary room, while work on the new house is being finished. She puts up a stiff upper lip and heads downstairs, but Duckie and Dad can’t manage to cheer her up.

At Seung-jo’s house, Mom is in a funk over Ha-ni’s departure. Seung-jo tries to convince her to go out, but she doesn’t want to do anything anymore, and nothing makes her laugh. She asks if he’s okay (a little accusingly) and he answers flatly that he finds it peaceful.

Mom: Peace? What is that peace? Is it knowing exactly what to expect? Having everything in the palm of your hand? Isn’t that why you were bored and suffocated before? Isn’t the reason you went to Parang because you disliked that peace?

Duckie gets permission from Dad to take Ha-ni out on a date, in an effort to cheer her up, but she doesn’t answer when he calls. Seung-jo takes out the present he got from Ha-ni before their college exams, and thinks of her.

The next day, Ha-ni announces to her friends that she’s not only left the house, but given up Seung-jo for good. She declares that she’s going to find a really awesome new boyfriend, and says goodbye to Seung-jo in her mind.

They drag her to lunch, saying that she has to face Seung-jo at some point, and sooner is better than later. But everyone stares at them oddly as they walk into the cafeteria. When they walk in, they see why. Duckie has put up an embarrassingly giant banner that declares Bong Joon-gu’s Current Love Mood: “Oh Ha-ni got tired of Baek Seung-jo so she said goodbye!” Okay, worst tweet ever.

The girls fear that Seung-jo will see it and assume the worst, but too late…he’s standing right behind them, and with He-ra at his heels, no less. He-ra further rubs salt in the wound by commenting on the childish ploy to get Seung-jo’s attention, but Ha-ni retorts that she’s forgotten Seung-jo already. He doesn’t say anything, but he doesn’t look happy about it.

At Top Spin, Kyung-soo asks Seung-jo to attend their weekend retreat, and when he refuses, he challenges him to a doubles match: Seung-jo and Ha-ni vs. Kyung-soo and He-ra, and if Seung-jo loses, he has to attend the retreat.

Mom finds out that Seung-jo went to a Top Spin meeting, deducing that he must’ve gone to run into Ha-ni. She puts on sunglasses and goes herself, and runs into Min-ah and Ju-ri, who tell her about the ensuing match, and the fact that Seung-jo and Ha-ni kissed the night of graduation.

They lose the match, of course, due to Ha-ni’s inability to, well, play tennis. Kyung-soo rubs it in that it’s Seung-jo’s first loss ever, and challenges him to a rematch at the retreat, with the same partners. To Ha-ni’s horror, Seung-jo accepts, clearly because it’s an excuse to spend time with her, though he wouldn’t admit it.

He trains her, even putting his arms around her to show her how to swing, and she tries hard in her Ha-ni-esque way. He-ra notes to Seung-jo that Ha-ni seems to be working at it quite fervently (in her condescending tone, of course), and Seung-jo smiles as he tells her that Ha-ni is fun, and there’s a “fun in raising her,” because you can see directly that hard work equals results. She admits that it must be a new feeling for him, since he doesn’t have to try to be good at everything. He notes that He-ra is the same way, which is again a nod to the pot-lid metaphor.

Ha-ni packs for her retreat, and Duckie, taking some advice from Dad, chooses not to follow her, and instead packs her a lunch. He tells her to always think of him as “home”—the place where she can come back to, and he’ll always be there. AW. Ten points, Duckie.

At the retreat, Ha-ni gets singled out for being late, and gets saddled with dinner duty, missing out on training. He-ra also decides to tell her that she’s interested in Seung-jo, and plans to tell him. Why are you even saying this to her, you smug little princess? I can’t wait till he flat-out rejects you. I hope it’s in public.

Ha-ni struggles with dinner prep, so she pouts at Seung-jo to help her. He totally caves, making the entire dinner. The best part is, he lets her take all the credit for it. Cute.

At practice, he works her to the bone, but she doesn’t give up, sticking it through. He of course doesn’t say anything nice to her, but he smiles to himself, impressed by her snail-paced brand of doggedness.

The next day Seung-jo has to attend practice during dinner prep time, so Ha-ni has to go it alone. Everyone’s bewildered at the table full of burnt food, wondering what on earth happened to the master chef (they call her Dae Jang Geum, ha) from last night. Seung-jo gets outed as the culprit.

Later that night, Ha-ni keeps an eagle eye on He-ra, who is about to make her move. She calls Seung-jo outside for a private conversation, and Ha-ni can’t help but follow. She eavesdrops as He-ra tells Seung-jo that she likes him. She asks how he feels, and he doesn’t answer.

It turns out they have quite an audience, however, as Kyung-soo creeps up from behind them, running smack dab into Ha-ni and scaring her. They make enough noise to get caught red-handed by Seung-jo, who uses the opportunity to dodge He-ra.

He grabs Ha-ni by the wrist and takes her away for more practice, leaving He-ra behind. Well there’s your answer right there, Miss Perfect. She looks down in disappointment, then throws a glare at Kyung-soo.

It’s the last day of the retreat and Ha-ni practices hard till the match. She manages to get her serve down, which is a huge accomplishment, and Seung-jo smiles as he watches her. He congratulates her on a job well done and flashes her a smile, and Ha-ni’s resolve melts in all of .5 seconds.

But of course, being Ha-ni, she can’t do anything without incident, so she slips on a tennis ball and sprains her ankle. Seung-jo tends to her sweetly, telling her to get on his back. He’s voluntarily piggybacking you now? You are totally the winner.

He tells Kyung-soo that they’ll play the match another time, and carries Ha-ni away, smiling. Aw. You lurve her! Even He-ra smiles as she concedes defeat…at least for now.

Following more of Dad’s advice, Duckie undergoes a makeover. Kyah, hello, Cutie! You were adorable before, but now you’re kinda manly AND adorable. But Ha-ni has no chance to react, as she gets brought home by Seung-jo, limping from her injury.

Seung-jo’s presence totally steals his thunder, and Duckie slinks away dejected. He takes it hard, but is soon enough back to his usual chipper self, loving Ha-ni from afar. Poor puppy. Your devotion is sweetness itself.

He-ra asks Seung-jo to a movie after class, and Ha-ni follows them. You’re turning into a regular stalker, aren’t you? She sighs that she’s always dreamed of going on a date like this with Seung-jo, picking out what to wear, where they’d go…but now all of those things will belong to He-ra.

She turns around to stay hidden, and lo and behold, Kyung-soo’s here stalking them too. He suggests they join forces, in an attempt to stop the unholy union that is He-ra and Seung-jo. They head into the movie together. (Gah, does everyone get to watch Cyrano Dating Agency but me?)

During the movie, He-ra tries to lean on Seung-jo’s shoulder, but Ha-ni blocks her with a magazine. Heh. They finish the movie without incident, but when Ha-ni sees Seung-jo being kind and friendly with He-ra, she doesn’t want to follow anymore. She asks herself what she’s doing, and faces facts—if they like each other, there’s nothing she can do.

She gives up, not wanting to become any more pathetic. She turns to walk away before her tears come tumbling out, but in her haste she runs right into a large guy with an ice cream cone. The guy freaks out about his expensive jacket being ruined, and starts demanding money from Kyung-soo.

He turns out to be a gangster, and his backup arrives as he starts pushing Kyung-soo around. Ha-ni gets knocked to the ground in the scuffle, and Seung-jo appears by her side, to help her up. He gives Kyung-soo the signal to take care of He-ra, and on the count of three, each of them grabs a girl and runs in opposite directions.

Seung-jo takes off running with Ha-ni, both of them smiling as they leap in step with each other.

COMMENTS

Not as good as Episode 7, which had such a strong emotional beat in Ha-ni’s departure from Seung-jo’s house. But I enjoy her current arc of attempting to get over Seung-jo and put herself first, which is never easy, but important for her to learn. I like that her crush has taken on a more serious tone, as Duckie’s has too. The changeover to college is a nice tonal shift, because the narrative is finally attempting to put more emotional weight behind each significant moment, rather than glibly stringing along a series of cute scenes, as it did in the high school segment.

I think proactive Seung-jo is definitely a step up, even if he’s still kind of emotionally unaware. I sort of wish they’d play up his social ineptness a little bit more, actually, because it would help to tip the scales in his favor. I want his flaws to be…more flawed.

The love triangles are also taking up a lot more real estate, which I’m good with, since it’s really the only dramatic tension we get in this drama. I hope He-ra continues to be a fierce opponent for Ha-ni, because I can’t wait to see her fall off her high horse.

But what I’m really dying for is a main loveline for Duckie. He’s finally starting to step up his game, and I want him to have a fighting chance for Ha-ni’s heart. Seung-jo deserves to be on the bench for a while, stewing in some good old-fashioned jealousy. I want him to know what he gave up and regret it, and realize his mistake when he sees Duckie being there for Ha-ni.

What we need is something to take the tension past lukewarm. I want some turning of the tables, because I want Seung-jo to earn Ha-ni’s devotion, even if he doesn’t need to.

Haha! Your recap was everything I was thinking while I watched this! I especially loved "He-ra also decides to tell her that she’s interested in Seung-jo, and plans to tell him. Why are you even saying this to her, you smug little princess? I can’t wait till he flat-out rejects you. I hope it’s in public." LMAO!!! Your writing is very funny and I'm glad I stumbled upon it ^_^

When I saw how dedicated SJ was in teaching Ha Ni tennis, taking care of her, helping her with making dinner, and smiling when she's not noticing you kinda could guess that he's already falling for her.

Although, its funny how He-ra keeps asking SJ out to do something and SJ knows Ha ni will follow but this time It seems like he doesn't care that she's around.. more like he kinda wants her there as a excuse to get out of anything..:D

I'm definitely enjoying this drama because the side characters not only make everything so funny and interesting but also having them around puts pressure on the two leads to somewhat admit their feelings (well mostly SJ's) .

Thanks for posting! Keep up the good work! :)

If that Hera is that smart she should have gotten the message from BSJ that he don't like her twice. The piggyback is the confirmation, what else she still need? Well, the story is that she'll continue to win him and try again till he has to tell her upright. Oh, how stoopid is she actually.

I just finished watching Eps 5-8 and I am giving everything that makes this drama enjoyable a pat in the back. I am loving the story even more, the maturing part of the leads and secondary leads realization with each other's relationship is superb and the emotional attachment with each scene is glorious.Looking forward to Episode 9. Thanks GF for the nice recap :)

val, same feelings! I do want it too much too! I think adult period of their life (if I can say so...) was even more profound cuz shew deeper feelings, emotions, problems of main characters especially. But I'm afraid they won't shoot the 2nd part :( Let us see, anyways!

I would like to add some words about He-Ra. Some of you, guys, told that she hadn't realized Seung Jo liked Ha Ni. I don't think so cuz, I guess, she aware of it. Her light smile when SJ was carrying Ha Ni was the proof! Moreover, I don't consider her a bitch. She's quite sincere and conscious state girl! Again, guys, I won't tell you more about her, further you'll yourselves see why I defend her! Believe me, she isn't a bitch!

THAT IS NOT SPOILER! I just want to add some about Joon Gu! There was one comment here stated that in this version Duckie is taken seriously and calls sympathy. Absolutely agree!!! I think it is a merit of the director and the actor himself! His character here takes an important place unlike in other versions!

I also share ur point of view about he-ra , as I already mentionned in a previews post she knows about BSJ starting to fall in love with ha-ni beause evrytime this last talks about OHN he-ra seems thoughtfull and have that slight smile ( as you mentionned ) , he-ra is the female version of BSJ ( at least she's shown this way ) so she can know he's falling for Hani without realizing his feelings .

After reading about all the comments I need to point one thing out though,

Why is the need for us to hate Hae Ra/ Duckie? B'coz they're both the second lead? I'm not saying that I'd be rooting for them, but their existence are needed to help both leads to find their way to be together. Don't get me wrong, I love triangles, confusions, manipulations, misunderstandings etc etc but... INK its not about all that and I hope PK won't be either...

INK is a feel good story, where at the end everybody is happy, even Duckie and HaeRa, both will find happiness in a way that they thought they never will. So why must we anticipate the bad nature of human in those characters, when we all could just sit back and enjoy their journey of finding love even if it means that they will fail at the end. It doesn't meant that they wont find love in others. Isn't that what we supposed to learn from?

So PK, keep up the INK spirit! AJA-AJA

I'm really liking the new episodes. The story is getting so much better. Its the perfect series for me to watch on a friday after i come home from school. You don't really have to try hard to follow the story. Its a nice break between MGIAG and IAL. On to Kim Hyun Joong’s hair...... LOVE LOVE LOVE the messy hair. Only if its done right... And in his case it most definetly is!!!!! Its... AMAZING ^_^

this is actually a hell of a whole lot truer to the anime/manga than the taiwanese version so i enjoyed it more. my only problem is, i watched the anime right before this drama started so it's nothing new to me. the taiwanese version didn't give duckie his romance but if this drama will survive to 20 episodes like originally planned, i can assure you duckie will have an amazing storyline.

i'm really impressed by hyunjoong's portrayal of seung jo. out of the anime, the manga, the taiwanese ver and this one, he is the one i hated most. i think it's because of his closeness to haera. if you haven't seen the japanese anime, please watch it after playful kiss is over. it has the best ending i've seen from all the animes/dramas i've ever watched.

p.s. the original manga author died before completion of the anime/manga ending which were supposed to be tied together. the ending is always open for interpretation and was badly done in the taiwanese ver so i hope this drama won't disappoint.^^

Same here. I love the anime to death ^^
I only disagree that I hated the anime Naoki the most coz he's too mean to Kotoko (Especially the part where he teased her for a second kiss but then he end up laughing out loud. I mean that outburst laugh is really really mean!).

But BSJ, his laugh is really small and actually sweet, so over all adaptations, BSJ is the most likeable Naoki I guess, hehe

agreed, agreed, agreed.

I'm still withholding my liking for BSJ though, because I sorta liked Naoki Irie (anime) until the very last episode where he did something that made me just.. hate him. I hope BSJ doesn't end up in my black book by the end of this drama. (what I feel for BSJ has nothing to do with what I feel for KHJ.. hehe)

I watched ep 4 with sub last night and o boyyo.. the things he said to Hani infront of her friends and his family, and some of the stuff he said to his mom, are really hurtful. I was gasping in dismay throughout the whole exchange. BSJ definitely has the mean streak all his predecessors possess, and there are situations in the future where he may be meaner to Hani than he already has (according to the original story anyway.. dunno how the screenwriters will change PK storyline).

I'm steeling my heart for future episodes. Oh Hani fighting~

Hahaha....
I'm guessing you like the anime Naoki coz of the white coat... LOL (still have that fetish, Ami?) hehe but I'm sure you totally turn 360 to BSJ once you see him in it too keke... I hope so ^^ Pls PK writers

What you said about the letter recital by BSJ its true, and I'm liking it coz it shows how OHN really getting into his nerves and I bet what went thru his mind is that, even how mighty genius BSJ would be, he really can't figure, "Why is this thoughtless girl still adores/love me although I treated her badly?" I bet that this question kept him bugged coz thru all logical senses, there might be no answer lol... Poor BSJ

keke pls disregard my letter recital comment, it wasnt supposed to be in there lol...

confuse, confuse, but confuse no more, today is wednesday YAY!!!

That letter recital was mean too.. but Oh Hani's frankness when she's drunk surprised me (since she was drinking beer in ep 8 and looked fine with it, I'm confused LOL). That was in ep 3, right? The one I was talking about in ep 4 was the scene when BSJ walked in and found her with her friends and his mom eating strawberry ice together.

I think BSJ is meaner because he can get ice cold and start ignoring her + being sarcastic (Hani doesn't get sarcasm and she'd just stand there blinking like a hurt deer.. awww) after he's given her all these adoring smiles and holding her wrist, arm, and entire body. Talk about being confused. Poor Hani.

I love men in uniforms (oops, secret's out now) and guys in white coats fascinate me, even if they're just anime characters.. gehehehe. I hope he wears spectacles too.. gyaaaa

Yeay for tonight's ep! I have to wait until tomorrow to download it.. shucks *kicks wall*

0

Keke Men in uniform... I have prob with guys in white shirt and had his tie undone... drool LOL

Oh about episode 4, BSJ being mean about their secret had been discovered at school, Yes its quite harsh but I find it quite reasonable though, here BSJ is, peaceful and calm, then came OHN with her trouble, reckless act which all happened because of accidents (although most of it happened because of her thoughtfulness), which BSJ finds it really, I mean really annoying

Best yet, even his own mother takes OHN sides, ahah Poor BSJ, he never gets his way anymore when OHN is in the picture... keke

0

In epi3 OHN being super drunk bcoz she drank makgeolli, (the alcohol % is slightly higher than normal beer) so that's why she got so tipsy and gone wild with her inner thoughts out loud..

Funny to see BSJ o'oh face when the elders knew about him making fun and bullying her, even funnier to get him to recite the love letter, LOL

BSJ really wants to make OHN hate him so that she will leave him alone, I guess, but thoughtless OHN never seems to get it.

0

*I have prob with guys in white shirt and had his tie undone…*

I have a problem with that too!! Or top two buttons undone with no tie. I wonder who invented that fashion statement. She should be shot (must be a she) for causing muchly unneeded havoc in our hearts.

*makgeolli, (the alcohol % is slightly higher than normal beer)*

oooo.. I get it. Hmm, I thought elders give youngsters weak/diluted alcohol during celebrations.. not something with a high alcohol content. Won't that be dangerous for the uninitiated?

*BSJ really wants to make OHN hate him so that she will leave him alone, I guess, but thoughtless OHN never seems to get it.*

Know what? Watching KHJ + BHJ clips doing ordinary things like drying his hair with a towel or sitting around the sofa doing normal things like sleeping or reading.. is it any wonder that Hani just can't seem to get it? With someone like that in close proximity, my head may understand that I have to just leave the guy, but I don't think my heart will be able to decide that kind of thing so easily.. so I'm totally sympathizing her on her predicament.

0

Funny how you and I both stand in BSJ side and OHN side, respectively... keke

I agree that OHN highly dosage of close encounter with BSJ daily life makes her hard to forget BSJ, but get this...

BSJ is not mean or bad by nature, he is actually trying to push OHN away by being mean... but in the end, somehow he always end up being her rescuer (which I doubt no any girls would not fall over heels to), so I concluded that both parties are to be sorry for...

Poor BSJ and poor OHN... keke

Mind me saying this..

but I think..

Ha Ni really caught his attention at the very first part, did she?
SJ memorizing the whole love letter of Oh Ha Ni even he corrected it and put a score..

mocking to her some of the lines to fool her around.. i think he like it rather than irritated feeling.

what do you think?

i agree with you.. seung jo seemed to like her presence from the start.

remember he was concerned in the earlier episode about Hani going home late and might meet the flasher? He found an excuse to go to the convenience store so that he could "accidentally bump" into her on his way home :)

BUT, WTH is wrong with the editing... i swear, this drama has one of the worst editing ever... i think part of it is because they have to be content with 16 episodes so they are cutting a lot of parts that would help the flow... it's a shame + waste really. i'm dreaming here but i want and director's cut. @CapitalScandalRocks

yeah. i think that ending thingy with the tennis and the two bros is just some kind of cut scene or something... a special treat to fans like you said.
i think i'm going to die waiting for next episode, thank god for JB&GF recaps or i won't survive.
this show is too cute. too bad the ratings r bad, even for this episode... i saw the realtime ratings and i think it's getting lower. TT.TT

@v I tried to watch ep 10 but it is taking forever to download.

aw... i guess tudou doesn't work for some people.. have u tried downloading it? it's only 700mb. i totally loved this ep.. maybe not so much the depressing part although it's a necessary part of the story but the later part got me excited. anyways, subs will probably be out soon. i couldnt wait for them honestly... i had to make do with the little korean i learned at school. haha. i'm too impatient. hope you'll be able to enjoy ep 10 soon.

thankuuu v always helping me , the last scene seems cute indeed eventhough as usual I didn't understand a word LOOOL , the guy is so deeply in love with our OHN but he is not able to get that , neither does OHN

ahhhhhh ....... now you're making me even more curious, still waiting for the sub!!!

@rainy ur welcome... im going to feel like a stalker soon if I keep checking on all the sites with PK news though. sigh. i need a restraining order. u should be able to understand though since i saw you (1st!) on ockoala's new recap. or was that not you? i always check her recap cuz when i watch it live, i'm on a chatroll to update others who can't watch it live or trying to explain the dialogue to them... the problem is my kr is not good enough and sometimes, i dont know if im telling them wrong things so i check ockoala's recap afterwards. fortunately i didnt get many things wrong but when i find that i do, i feel super guilty.. -_-"

0

@ v : yes it's me the same Rainyrain on ockoala , i was also keeping checking to read the update there so I can understand what was said especially if there was a cute scene and especially all BSJ-OHN scenes .

Oh girls !!! (I guess most of the people here are girls ^^) I have so much fun reading your comments and laughing all by myself in front of my computer !!! So glad that we all think the same way ! Me neither, I've never been a fan of KHJ. But Girlfriday's recaps + your comments + Seung Jo's new curly hair totally got me hooked !!! I can't believe I fell into the trap, but yes I realized that I did and I do want to stay trapped with Playful Kiss <3

After My Girlfriend is a Gumiho ended, I'm looking to this drama for the sweet and funny moments and this episode didn't disappoint. love the ending and the tennis scenes =)

I guess the tension will come later. in a way, this Korean version is already much faster than the Taiwanese version if I remember correctly.

I agree, GF. SJ needs to earn Ha-ni's affection, and also feel the cold, hard hurt of jealousy when Joon-gu gets a leg up...sometime in the future? I do appreciate him (JG) making efforts to change for Ha-ni - he's growing up too. But alas, we know it's just gonna be more heartbreak for this sweet guy.

But how cute was SJ when he watched Ha-ni get her serve down, and then all smiles, piggy-backing her when she got hurt! He was almost giggly with delight...er....as giggly as our robotic SJ can be.

Hae-ra is not proving to be much of a rival right now. I'm sure she sees that SJ only has eyes for Ha-ni, even when he doesn't see it himself. So she has to step up her bitch-game if she really wants the challenge.
