Kang Hye-jung and Lee Yoon-ji in Proof
by girlfriday
Kang Hye-jung (Old Boy, Flowers for My Life) and Lee Yoon-ji (Goong, Heading to the Ground) are headed to the stage this fall in an adaptation of the David Auburn play, Proof.
The actresses are double cast as the lead, Catherine, the daughter of a University of Chicago mathematician who dies after suffering from mental illness most of his life. The play follows Catherine’s struggle with the same debilitating illness, as well as the question of her own brilliance in the field of mathematics.
It’s a haunting story and an amazing play. It won a Pulitzer AND a Tony in 2001 after its Manhattan debut, and spurred countless adaptations. There’s also a film version by John Madden, starring Gwyneth Paltrow, Anthony Hopkins, and Jake Gyllenhaal.
This will be the theater debut for both actresses, who are in rehearsals now. It’ll be the first project for Kang since giving birth to her and Tablo’s first child in May. Lee’s last project was the recent weekend drama Dandelion Family.
Proof opens in Seoul on October 1.

I absolutely love Lee Yoon Ji in every project she appears! She nearly always has me looking right past the lead actress anticipating the her return to the screen. How it is that this infectuous, intelligent, amazingly pretty starlet s not huge (when so many of lesser talents are) is one of the great mysteries of the industry. Best of luck to both ladies for success in this latest venture.

I agree. I've seen Lee Yoon-ji in a few projects, and have also wondered why she hasn't been grabbed for a lead role. The girl has the acting chops, and has shown that she also has solid comedic timing. Is it possible that, because she's so pretty and glamorous, she's been pigeon-holed to second lead and supportive roles? It'd be a shame, as she definitely has the screen presence and ability to fill a lead position.
I know that a lot of people didn't watch Hearts of Nineteen because it was an extremely long(167 episodes) family drama...but Lee Yoon-ji was wonderful in it as the lead male's younger sister.

I agree, she has so much charisma and talent! I really want to see her in a lead role. It's a shame she hasn't had a big break.

OMG. this is wonderful!
i so wanna watch this, but it's probably impossible. if only they have recordings of plays and musical available! i really really wanna see a different take on the play especially since this is one of my chosen texts for my A's. hmm, the distance from singapore to korean seems insurmountable! (:

Glad to read that Lee Yoon-gi is working and doing well in her career. I've only seen her in Pure in Heart and the Great King Sejong(?) and enjoyed her acting both times. We don't get a lot of K-dramas on tv in New Jersey and we miss out on many fine performers.

OMG I wish I was in korea to watch this! I am doing this for my lit text and it is the easiest to read. but because of that I think the company I saw took it for granted and did an extremely horrible job.

Your dad is right! Yoon Ji may be the least publicised, most popular personality in the business. I remember seeing her smiling face in those street scenes in 'We Got Married' when tv husband Kangin was doing his best to garner the attention and love of the common people that they met along the way who were having nothing of it. Seemingly every man, woman, and child was immediately smitten with Lee Yoon Ji. They ended up looking right past him while falling over themselves to get closer to her. She has a special aura to go along with that beautiful face...
