Filming halts on Gloria due to union strike

Gloria is the first drama production to halt filming as a result of the union strike (details here), after the cast decided to follow the union’s stance and refused to shoot on September 2.

KBS and now SBS have settled the unpaid wage issue with the broadcasting/film labor union, but that leaves MBC still trying to find a way to resolve their outstanding payments. Four productions are at issue; other than Gloria, they are Playful Kiss, Kim Suro, and Dong Yi.

On the afternoon of the 2nd, union reps came to the Gloria set at the MBC Dream Center in Ilsan to talk with the actors face to face. Producers had intended to film that day, but after the meeting ended at 3:30 pm, the entire cast — including leads Bae Doo-na, Lee Chun-hee, and Seo Ji-seok — refused to participate. At 7:15 pm, the filming crew decided to call it a day.

An MBC representative stated that this weekend’s episodes of Gloria will air as planned. (Presumably, those scenes have finished shooting.) However, if this strike continues, next weekend’s broadcast may be endangered.

oh no...this is bad. T_T
Gloria is the only kdrama i'm watching at this moment, n i'm really loving it cuz it's a drama with heart despite the typical old-skool kdrama setup/characters.
why is MBC so stubborn? sigh.
thanks for the news.

MBC had beef with major companies and individuals in the past as well... seems stubborn, right?

well its hard when you have to manage all these payments. They are just bad in management, MBC is still regarded higher than SBS for some reason.

I hope MBC finds the money soon to pay their staff. They sure work hard enough as it is.

Otherwise, I will have to grit my teeth and support the strikers.

I'm a bit confused on what the actors' refusal to talk means. Does that mean they're supporting the union? Or are they going against the union by refusing to talk?

The union represents actors and crew members. It isn't that the cast is refusing to talk, they're agreeing to abide by the union's decision to not participate in the drama until the unpaid wages are dealt with. That places added pressure on the companies to find a way to pay up so they can resume their productions.

MBC sure does seem to have problems with its dramas these days.....what with all its big budget dramas bombing and all so they mudt be having financial difficiulties too but they dont seem to be going about any of these issues the right way either...and these workers deserved to be paid

Well given how the big three broadcasters made in excessive of w167 million last year I think they can manage w4 million to pay their staff for services rendered over the past two years. This is simply on called for.

MBC has some good shows on the air these days, granted I only watch Gloria from the aforementioned dramas listed above, and with their dreaded "curse" one would think that they would do just about anything short of sabotaging (though I'm not counting that out) their rivals to make sure they don't lose any more of their audience.

This current problem is entirely their fault. MBC could have easily paid their staff its back wages and avoided a work stoppage. So if they end up losing any market share/audience I hope those affected by it take management out to the wood shed and teach them a valuable lesson.

I love love love Gloria, too. I think it's the best drama of the year and it's a shame more people aren't watching it. The actors are terrific and the storylines just suck you in. It's rare to find a drama that's so realistic yet entertaining. Gloria rocks! Not that I mind the cutesey poo dramas like My Girlfriend is a Gumiho or Playful Kiss, but Gloria is an adult drama that really grabbed my attention without being all dramatically over the top.

I would not work unless I was paid. The electric company doesn't like it if you tell them to keep on the lights, but, ah, I can't pay for another six months....maybe. The phone people are picky that way, too.

SOLIDARITY ! Too, bad they all didn't just stop shooting ... it is one union, not separate unions for separate broadcasting companies?? right?
