Daemul’s President Go Hyun-jung
by javabeans
Now that SBS’s Daemul is finally rolling, looks like they’re eager to get your attention (and for a positive reason, for once) with all their new stills. Go Hyun-jung is featured in the latest set, looking every bit the part of Korea’s first woman president.
In these photos, Go’s character, Seo Hye-rim, is at a summit talk at the White House with the American president. The faked White House was staged at the Damyang Dnasty Country Club Hall in South Jeolla — which, by the way, was also the set of Gu Jun-pyo’s mansion in Boys Before Flowers. This scene will be shown in the first episode. (I can only hope it contains as little acting in English as possible. These types of scenes always make me cringe; the Korean actor rarely sounds like s/he knows what s/he’s saying, and the English speaker always tends to speak slowly like his co-star is a child or an idiot.)
It also makes me relieved that Go decided to come back to the production, because I can’t imagine another actress being better at being commanding who’s also capable of vulnerability. Well, maybe Lee Young-ae, who was the original choice for the role, but she would have brought an entirely different energy, and I think part of the fun in having Go is in the meta awareness of how sly and brilliantly manipulative she can be with her last drama role, Mi-shil of Queen Seon-deok, still on everyone’s minds.
Daemul replaces My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho and premieres October 6.

This show wasn't on my radar at all, not until I saw those first stills of her with Cha In-pyo, holy smokes! Fire!
Am I the only one who abhorred Mishil? It wasn't her acting, it was that theme tune, the perma-cocked eyebrow, and the round table of doom... and stuff.

the perma-cocked eyebrow, and the round table of doom…
LOL. I hated the "round table of doom" parts. I have to admit that I only watched the episodes and parts with Kim Nam Gil. Episode 25 or 26 (Bidam's awesome kick-ass entrance) had me hooked, but I was only hot to trot for Bidam.Yes, I'm shallow and a shameless fast-forwarder...

Exactly my observation... K-dramas always portray 'lame-looking' actors for foreign characters, e.g. a native-English-speaking character is portrayed by an actor who sounds more like a European attempting to speak English.
But anyway, apart from that, she is dressed like a real states-woman. I will defintely watch this k-drama.

This is true, but you must also remember that the selection pool for foreigners is very small. How many of them are living or visiting Korea, and of those people, how many are interested in being an extra in a k-drama or movie? My guess is not many.

actually, there are a lot of foreigners in Korea... okay, not a LOT, but more that I had initially thought.
there was over 1 millions foreigners living in Korea a few years back, i image the number has grown substantially as Korea continues to grow in foreign appeal
still not a large pool to choose actors from, of course, i just wanted to share :)

Well, Pres. Obama just redecorated the Oval Office (to mixed reviews) so who knows, there may be some leopard print chairs now.
I'm not sure about her suit. It looks... itchy.
And I'm with y'all about the English-speaking actors used in these dramas. I've also wondered if English was their second language, and they were just used because they looked Caucasian.

I took a tour of the White House a couple weeks ago and I didn't notice any leopard chairs or even a decal of the presidential seal slapped against the wall anywhere.
I also find it amusing how short the actor playing the president is. No one that short would get elected into office.

I was just going to say that .... every time I see someone who is suppose to be an American I cringe...
I always think there must be some American who can speak/understand Korean and be not so schmucky....
The only semi positive one was the Prince William actor from Princess Hours and he was English
Korean directors must really dislike Americans.
Cheers, parsnip

Yeah, it looks like Fate pitied her on her failure to be Queen Regnant of Silla, so they basically gave her another chance (read: reincarnated her) in the 21st century as Seo Hyo-rim...
...but she's not looking for Authority, dearie, since she's THE AUTHORITY!
Some points I don't want to happen in this drama:
1) Her predecessor president not be played by Lee Sun-jae (the grumpy grandpa of family dramas, aka, King Jinheung of Silla who almost got poisoned had it not he died earlier before Mi-shil poisoned him)...
2) Her birthplace not be Gyeongju (or where the ancient Silla capital of Seorabeol was) or the area predominated by the clan of the Gyeongju Kim's...
3) Have a vice-president as mischievous as Mi-saeng...
...since people would associate this as "Dae-mul: Mi-shil Reincarnate", and not as "Daemul: The Story of South Korea's First Female President".
BTW, might I ask, who is the Head of State in South Korea? The President or the Prime Minister???

ooops, my bad, it's supposed to be Seo Hye-rim...my bad, sorry...
I hope they include a scene wherein she says (when she wins the elections):
"...이제...서혜림의 시대입니다..."
...or even "아프론...서혜림의 시대입니다..."

Daemul was suppose to shoot first (Mar 2008 I think) but they kept on delaying it. Go Hyun-jung got tired of waiting so she signed on to play Queen Seon Deok. After reading the script she wanted to play Mishil instead (sooo glad).
About midway through QSD the Daemul team (Lee Kim Production) decided to sue her for 5.6 billion won. Go Hyun Jung (and her Hwarangs lol) filed a countersuit stating that she had to turn down 3 drama and 5 movie offers because of the wait.
Not sure what they did to keep her but I'm glad to see her back.

She's looking very presidential in the first picture. Not so much in the others as her suit has a tendency to look weird.

I don't know about the rest of you but deep down, I was secretly rooting for Mishil and her ideal of becoming Queen. That girl did NOT quit and I don't know, maybe it was the difference between Lee Yo Won's (Queen Seon Duk) mediocre acting and Go Hyun Jung's amazing portrayal of Mishil!
With that said, I probably will watch Daemul purely for Go Hyun Jung alone even though I love Kwon Sang Woo. His character doesn't intrigue me very much... or maybe it was his funky hair style that turned me off.

Oh, noes, Mi-shil is ALIVE!!!
...no, wait, it's just my imagination, wahekhekhekhek...
of course, CIP is her Seolwon-rang, and KSW is someone's Bi-dam...
...just reminded me, KSW was LYW's partner in "Bad Love", right? And KNG was Deokman's Bi-dam in QSD???
"oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh my god!"
-----
GHJ smiling like that while sitting on a chair of power really (& awfully) reminds me of her suicide scene pose in episode 50...without the jars of poison, that is...
If you can re-imagine/slash/re-work this scene out, ala QSD style, I can visualize this scene as Mi-shil having tea with China's envoy or something...or yet, having a discussion (since "alliance" was never in her vocabulary) with Goguryeo on how to best ruin Baekje (since according to her ladder in episode 29 (from bottom rung to top rung): "Baekje-in...Goguryeo-in...Silla-in")

I can't believe she's forty! When I force-feed my family Kdramas, I always have to keep things like this secret from my Mom. She just can't accept the fact that someone her age looks so much better. Haha. It's called "being a celebrity". Aside from Chun Jung Myung (I recall hearing that he sucks the youth out of his co-stars?) they have to depend on things like surgery, makeup, lighting, etc. as they age.
However they manage it, I'm jealous too.
