Will Giant get an extension?
by javabeans
Another well-performing show = another broadcaster keen to stretch its good luck with more episodes.
SBS’s Monday-Tuesday show Giant is currently doing very well with both ratings and audience praise, and at about three-fifths of the way through its run, it’s picking up steam. It’s doing so well that it put the pressure on MBC’s Dong Yi, which was easily beating the competition for most of its run but recently found itself slipping to second after Giant.
Now SBS is looking into the possibility of extending the series, which was originally slated to end on November 2 with 50 episodes. However, according to a source at SBS’s Dream Center, even though it’s still too early to decide, “the feel is positive so there’s a big possibility.”
Before any decisions are made, the broadcaster will have to get all the actors to agree. With big names onboard, scheduling conflicts will have to be worked out if any cast members have signed on for other projects with the original schedule in mind. But the source did explain that the cast is also looking favorably at the extension.
Furthermore, producers and broadcasters probably won’t be making any decisions until they monitor the performance of its next upcoming rival, the upcoming historical romantic-comedy series Sungkyunkwan Scandal. The rep said, “If Sungkyunkwan Scandal‘s ratings rise, Giant‘s has a big chance of falling. After we closely watch how Sungkyunkwan Scandal does, the final decision will be made whether to extend Giant‘s broadcast.” The source added the assurance that the writers have been completing the scripts quickly and shouldn’t face too much trouble if an extension is ordered.

With the pace the story is running now, I think 50 episodes would be enough. I love Giant.

For goodness sake - Noooo extension. Its best to end on top, beyond that there's a strong likelihood of sinking.

i think we need to force the network to make a deal. If they insist on extending successful shows based on ratings then they should be forced to let the dramas with less ratings (but that are mania dramas) fulfill their intended airing schedule. I'm still pissed that they off-ed tamra island.

Just as long as Gang Mo & Jung Yeon have a happy ending, Minwoo chooses MiJu over his farther, Seong Mo gets a girlfriend and all the main characters has lots of babies, then i am content if they extend the series.

Seong Mo? And... Girlfriends? And... Mercy? Pah, that's for regular nancies.
Plus just look at those bottomless pits of sorrow that are his eyes and tell me you'd still want to inflict la pain de la girlfriend on him, too.

Sorry guys, I've reached a conclusion, I don't want Giant to ever end. If it means there'll more Seung-mo. I feel so deprived of him when he's not gracing the screen, nevermind when Giant finishes.
Not even Jung Woo-sung and Cha Seung-won, Jang Hyuk/Ha Ji-won combined will be able to fill the void he'll be leaving behind. (Sob.)

Hahaha- crysalide. Good one. I agree.
But usually an extension causes the story to drag. Thus far, what I love most about Giant is its so quick and nicely paced in its plot. It doesn't go round and round, - like East of Eden, which ended being an epic nonsense.
If the writers can continue to cook good stuff like they are now and keep the story true to its name and real essence, then I'm not completely against it.
As long as they can keep this good stuff balanced. If they trip even a little, it might just take viewers away.

I totally agree 100% with Smars & Crysalide...rarely would I stick around to watch 50 episode-dramas, but GIANT is one exception!!! So far, I'm loving the story's progression & pacing...+ the actors are just magnificent!!!
Extending it might just ruin, what is most likely ..one of the BEST dramas this year!!!

No. Nooooo. Noooooooooo.
Please do not screw with Giant, SBS. And yes, an extension would screw with this exquisitely-paced and well-developed story. I don't want to see no random side story time fillers, or make our leads go through more shit or success than necessary.
And if my Gang Mo and Jung Yeon don't have 3 babies soon I am disemboweling someone at SBS.

Wow, how many episodes?
I think it could work, since we're at episode 30 and still stuck in the year 1981, with so much of the story yet to be told in its remaining episodes, plus one important character yet to be introduced (who'll probably be played by a prominent actor).
Apparently they'd already filmed the finale, so I wonder what'll happen if they have to create more material to shoehorn in. I'd prefer there be no extension, but I think the writer's pretty competent.

yeah the story is only up unti 1981. heck wasn't even born yet that time. haha. if they want to add some story, don;t forget to creat Little JunMo in it. i want to see hot actor playing that part. and make him a tycoon in states. yeah then i'm content.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Sungkyunkwan Scandal from KBS and it's the successor for Gumiho Revenge? Dong Yi is from MBC, right?

I hate extensions. They always ruin the flow of a drama. I really hope they don't extend Giant. It's doing so well now!

I hate it when studios just cannot just sit back and say, "You know what? This show is as good as it's gonna get. Let's stop now." Nooo, the producers need to take advantage of their luck and wring out every single little drop out of the franchise, ("Drag it out people!! There's money to be had!) until the storylines become repetitive and tedious. People should know when to stop.

I am against extension too. But not against a second series. They could just close this story and follow the next act. Why not....?

August 25, 2010 at 2:47 AM
hm, i guess better no extentions because Dong Yi's rating has climbed up back to 29.3 and Giant has dropped to 21. plus, there's Sungkyunkwan Scandal as competition starting nextweek.
afterall, as much as i think DY is too long, but it could be understand because its sageuk. but for a drama which is not sageuk or daily drama, its heck too long. as much as some people hate East of Eden, the drama's rating is flunctuating btween 25-33.

Ah, they need to know too much food for the stomach will make one sick. end it while everyone is almost full will make one crave for more .... that's how audiences always remember a good show.

I watch Giant because the 4 main character are so hot. I love watching the min woo and miju the cute couple and some of their scene makes me laugh. I love to watch the show that have some comedy. If there is an extension, I'll definitely watch as long as some scene have comedy in it and have a happy ending.

This is a good drama. The only part that could be better was Seongmo's ending. It was bad that he got crazy because of the bullet, and even worse that he died from the surgery.
