Life Is Beautiful confirmed for an extension
by javabeans
Weekend drama Life Is Beautiful, written by one of Korea’s top drama writers, Kim Soo-hyun, has been confirmed for a 13-episode extension. That brings it from its planned 50 episodes to 63.
The family drama, which is filmed on Jeju Island, has been performing well in the ratings (from upper teens to about 20%) since its March 20 premiere. It has also drawn notice for its positive portrayal of a gay relationship between two male characters, played by Song Chang-eui and Lee Sang-woo.
This means that the drama that was scheduled to follow, Jang Hyuk and Ha Ji-won‘s upcoming fantasy-drama Secret Garden, will also be pushed back accordingly. It now premieres on November 13.

i like "life is beautiful" but it's so draggy at times. Gosh isn't 50 enough. Must they ruin it.!!!!!!!!
Funny enough the gay story isn't so amusing to me. Probably because i seen too many movies about it already.I wish there were more scenes with Ho sub's couple and the uncle.

BULLSHIT!!
The only reason they consider this a "positive portrayal of a gay relationship". Is because they hardly do anything a REAL gay couple would do.
DO THEY EVEN KISS WITH THERE MOUTHS MOVING CUDDLE ANYTHING?

If they are trying to open Korean's mind to try and accept homosexuality, do you really think that showing them kissing and intimate scenes will help? They do cuddle and i think for a first openly gay drama it's enough. No need to push it down anybody's throat.

Yeah, I agree with you. It's not even a movie. It's a drama that even kids could see everyday. Putting gay kissing scenes in it is unsuitable. They are portraying wholesome, modest true love here. That's enough.

Ugh really? Why.....it's so..........boring right now as it is. It's so slow already.
I guess it doesn't help that half of the characters in the show are really annoying (like the older sister and her husband)....and yet the other cast members interest me enough to keep watching. Dang it. The extension makes me more apprehensive to finish the series.

What?!? 0_o When I started watching LiB, I was completely floored. I think it's a *huge* step forward if a same-sex couple is portrayed like that (in a healthy relationship!) in a family drama. Sure, there are no explicit scenes between Kyung-soo and Tae-sub but the drama more than makes up for it with emotional touching scenes (side note there was one of the best offscreen kisses evah! alskdjalsd Loved it).
Anyway, what I meant is, yes, it would be great if these two got more "action" going on, but I think it's a heck of a lot more important to talk about things like oh idk, tolerance and homophobia, which, if you ask me, LiB did very well when we got to see how Kyung-soo and Tae-sub's families reacted to their respective coming out. Spin it however you want, but homophobia is still a big problem there as it is in many others (*thinks of her country*) and it's great that such storyline is portrayed in such a way (touching, realistic in many ways) in a family weekend drama that soooo many people see. It's cool.

urgh....i really like this series...but to perfectly honest nothing ever really HAPPENS here at least not in the first 26 eps...i mean there are a lot of issues that are dealt with pretty deftly and then i just feel like the rest of the time is used to show the characters daily lives, while this is amusibg to watch it can get draggy at times especially when you've seen it before in previous episodes...i dont think there is anything new they decide to bring to the plate with an additional 13 episodes....that being said i do love the way they portrayed the gay relationship though sometimes it can get a bit too angsty

Awesome!
I love this drama - it's so different to the typical kdrama. And I love all the characters.
I like watching a drama once in a while that doesn't involve the typical cliches - I love all the couples particularly Big Uncle and Crazy Laughing Lady.
This is def on my list as one of my favourite dramas of 2010.

Even though it's a good drama, it's not that good, to warrant a 13 episode extension. Extensions, especially long ones, are mainly full of fillers anyway.
I've always wondered what criteria is used to determine the number of episodes for an extension. Why 13? Why not 5? 8? 10?
Happy weekend-ing to everyone!

I think it is a good drama.
I think it's well acted and I love the characters and the plot. I don't need secret births, long-planned revenge all the time. It's certainly more enjoyable that current dramas like "Bad Guy" or "Road Number 1".
Horses for courses. You are entitled to your opinion and I am entitled to mine. I like it - simple as.

@jane
someone uploaded all the Kyung-soo/Tae-sub bits from ep 1 to 27 here http://www.youtube.com/user/KRNOlleh#g/u The kiss is at the end of this clip http://www.youtube.com/user/KRNOlleh#p/u/35/WFJ3Es1NV4k at around 5:00. I'm afraid it doesn't pack a punch when you're not familiar with the storyline and the characters. I mean, the charm of the storyline stems from how emotional it is, imho. I actually squeed and grinned like an idiot when it finally happened. It's not the same thing if you haven't suffered with them for them, if you know what I mean? ;)

me too, me too. I've just watched ep 29 and OMG the preview the preview!! ahhhhh! Ahem. Their story is so touching and so very well done it makes me smile like an idiot or cry...with them...for them.
Anyway, I totally agree with what you said in your previous comment. Considering what kind of drama this is, it's as explicit as it can get. I mean, dude, TPTB have explicitly shown that Kyung-soo and Tae-sub sleep together!!!! When the first of those scenes came on screen, my jaw hit the floor. It's totally a huuuge step forward for Korean tv, imho.

Thanks, Sere. I was hoping to see some action but it looks like it was left to the audience's imagination which now that I think of it makes sense since you said it was an off screen kiss. Somehow in my head, that meant a behind the scenes kiss. Thanks again for the clip.

You're welcome. You might have more luck with the movie Just friends http://www.hancinema.net/korean_movie_Just_Friends_i_.php which I haven't had the opportunity to watch yet (but it looks so cute, omg!) or No regret with Kim Nam-gil. Have fun!

I don't think the extension was due to overwhelming demand for the series, but more to accommodate the lead actress HJW for the next upcoming drama, and as reported, she is only available for filming late Autumn and the PD of Secret Garden is date set to have her as female lead.
