Kim Hyun-joong’s Playful Kiss family
by javabeans
Here we get our first look at a Playful Kiss family portrait, which depicts the parents and younger brother of Kim Hyun-joong‘s lead character.
By all reports (I haven’t seen the original series myself) the family has a fair amount of screentime, in particular the mother character, played here by the wonderful Jung Hye-young. She’ll act the matchmaker for her son and Jung So-min‘s character, who comes to live with their family temporarily when her house is wrecked, since their fathers are friends.
I just hope the family parts won’t get too jokesy, because the over-the-top family members were a source of much awkwardness in Boys Before Flowers. (Again I repeat to myself: Have faith in director Hwang!)
Playful Kiss will air on September 1.

I love ISWAK much better than Itanazura Kiss. But then, I also love Meteor Garden I the most (not just love it, but LOVE it) even compares to Hana Yori Dango.
I don't remember exactly how the story goes, but if I'm not mistaken the little brother is even smarter than the girl! The brothers are a brainy pair. The only air head in their family is the mother. And that's why the mother and the girl hit it off.
Despite some doubts about KHJ's acting prowess, I hope the Korean version will be much better than both the Taiwanese and Japanese versions (BBF failed to blow me off).
Looking forward to fall in love with this one...

i LOVED the japanese versions more than the taiwanese versions. Hana Yori Dango series owned Meteor Garden in SO many ways. Itazura na Kiss - the guy's gorgeous but the girl not really... then again It Started with a Kiss had actor and actress looking like special children (Joe Cheng when he smiles, Ariel Lin most of the time.)

August 24, 2010 at 6:51 AM
ahhahaha! oh my god! so true!!! They looked like special children! I can see why she acted that way because that was the character in the anime. But that was the anime, they're suppose to be unbelievable like that. When I saw the taiwanese version, all I can think of was... "wow.. if I see this girl in real life, I think I'll punch her" I can handle overly cutsy, or overly dumb, but once you couple overly cutsy with overly dumb, you've created a monster!
But from the trailer, I thought jung so min portrayed this nervous, kind-of-slow girl nicely. oooh this should be fun nevertheless!

lmao omg so that's how you can describe the lead actors' portrayal!! It bothered me when I watched it and couldn't finish it because they annoy me somehow and you've just described them perfectly. I just could not believe how the guy fell for her at all, at least in the anime I did think that Kyoto was cute despite being a super ditz.

The family does have a huge screentime, as they play an important part in the series. I'm currently watching the Japanese version as well, and the mom is too pretty for her husband. From the looks of this, I think the casting of the family is spot-on.
As for the OTT parents, I find that Japanese doramas do well on these aspects. I had no problem with Makino's parents in HanaDan, when in the manga, they were annoying as hell. Even though I'm still in the middle of watching Itazura no Kiss, I'm liking both their parents very much. That, or these issues all lie on the hands of the director.

I am not really going to hold much hope for this show as I'd rather not get disappointed especially as ISWAK (the original taiwanese series) had factors that might not translate well to a korean drama. For one, I don't think the drama of the fat little brother from ISWAK and the adorable dorkiness of jiro wang will come through with the korean actors!!!

What annoys me about this series is how ridiculously obsessed the girl is with the guy O_O Seriously, it's like she has no life and only lives for the guy, which is just...wrong D: I know it's from a shoujo manga, but still, there are other types of heroines too! XD All she seems to care about is him. I don't know if I can take another version of that XD
Still, the family is cute ^__^ Yu Shu was a abit cuter XD But comparisons are silly anyway : )

i think her brainless divotion bugs all of us at one point or another, its part of why her character is so annoying and hard to pull off.
i got really frustraited watching ISWAK because of that same reason. it tok me four trys and a year before i finally finished it. and i found out i liked more than i thought i would, idiotic girl and all.
maybe this one will surprise us all and make her a little less obsessive but i doubt it.

I agree KHJ has no expression in all the promo pics. Then off camera he suddenly develops a personality.
The family was quite funny, especially the mother tying to matchmake Kotoko and Naoki. And she absolutely adored Kotoko because she always wanted a daughter.
I do hope this can live up to the expectations but I'm still really iffy about it.

As the taiw. Version Of IswaK has much more episodes, I suppose PK will be a short cut of Iswak.

This story is about the real life of the original mangaka, Tada Kaoru, with his husband. So it's hard for me to see Kim Hyun Joong, who lacks emotion and has no acting skill, will play Irie Naoki's character. I KNOW that he won't be able to pull of the character as good as Joe Cheng, but at least I want him to play his best in this. His role in BBF just freak me out.

seriously, i don't even think he could act. have you seen him in Boys Over Flowers? he's practically a stiff and a robot all series long. hmmm...well, his character for this drama is pretty much the same. cold, stone-faced, sometimes gentleman kind of character.
i'm actually tired of all these idols-turning-into-actors thing in Korea. can anyone get some real actors and not eye candy? take Kim Nam Gil for example. that's what you call an actor suited for a drama mini-series. Lee Seung Gi is also good enough for acting even though he's a singer (Shining Inheritance & My GF is a Gumiho).

I am getting a bit concerned over the press releases saying the mom is the matchmaker. This implies that she helps the couple get together. In every series to date, Manga, Japanese, anime, and Tiawan, the mom has pushes for them to be together, but her pushing has always driven them apart since the lead male, Naoki, wants to make his own decisions and not be forced into anything. He sees moms every interference as a big reason to ignore and not deal with his emotions for Kotoko. Calling her a matchmaker gives me the willys. I don't mind if they change the story I guess and make the mom more successful in her attempts to bond the couple, but her failures to achieve what the audience and the leads obviously want are often humorous and slightly gut wrenching. It would be a shame to loose this goofy camera crazed mom as I have seen her before. I guess I will just have to wait and see.
It might just be a simple character press release done by people who have never read the story outlines. At least this is what I am hoping for.

The over-the-topness of the family in ISWAK was part of its considerable charm, but within the Kdrama format, which is usually a lot more sleek than its Tdrama counterpart, I kind of agree that it may be grating.
Okay, I have basically nothing to say except I want this now! I don't care if everything about it sucks acting-wise, it promises me a lot of FUN and PRETTY.

It would be charming if the guy wasn't a jerk pretty much throughout the serious. There never felt to be a real progression, just a constant of his mean-ness.
And the girl would have been cute in her silliness but her obvious obsession over some guy who treats her like crap made her seem even sillier.
I guess I have issues with any drama showing that it's okay if a guy treats you like crap, just take it, cry, and hope that he ends up loving you.

You're not the only one. Initially I was taken in by the chemistry that Ariel Lin and Joe Cheng had (even though, like somebody said, they behaved like 'special children') but I soon realized what an utter waste it was. I can't believe that such a sexist story, written by a female, could become so popular.
First, a girl sacrificing her dignity, self-respect and pride to grovel after a sadistic robot who takes pleasure in watching her suffer is beyond me. How is she admirable? That she can't 'help' but be an insufferable suck-up and door mat to somebody who clearly could care less about her? Why is he admirable? Because he has so little sefl-confidence and enjoys the ego-massage he gets from a pathetic idiot so much so that at any sign of her breaking out of his grasp he kisses her/hugs her/ makes ambiguos(?) statements to confuse her all the time? The only time he steps up is a the thought of her being independant of him.
This was NOT a love story. It was a story about her obsession for his approval and his sadistic need for someone pathetic to make himself feel good all the time.
To top all of that was one of the most disgusting drama scenes I've seen in my life. The bus scene. Which animal that dares to call himself a man would watch a woman - any woman - get molested and do noting?! WTF is with that? What sort of monster would stand by and SMIRK at that? How can that sort of man be worthy of anybody's love? And most importantly - how can that sort of character be considered a 'heart-throb'?
I don't think this story has any good moral values - playing the part of a submissive, subservient rag-doll is not good at all. The only time you should sacrifice soo much for someone... is for yourself. And as for him - the only time you should let someone worship you so much, is if you created them.
So I don't really think that Group Eight could screw this one up (it's wonky to begin with). I don't care much for this adaption but honestly believe that they don't respect 'original' stories the way Taiwan and Japan does - they broke my heart with BOF. And I shall never forgive them.
On the Plus side though - I think Jung So Min is gold in this show - I saw her 'running' in one of the bts clips and she runs like a normal girl! I hope this means that the retarded GHS/PSH/HEJ run/walk is OVER! Just that would make me forgive this manga for being written.

I don't get this hype either. Or how this story got so popular as to have an anime, a Japanese, Taiwanese AND Korean drama adaption. Kotoko (too over-the-top) and Naoki (TOO cold) always seemed wholly incompatible to me, and the character development that I kept waiting for (making them, I expected, more compatible), never caaameee.
I hope this version can make a few needed changes to make it a better story. Still not sure if I'll actually watch, though.
Aha, as for my thoughts on the Korean casting of Naoki, I think that seeing as Naoki is pretty much made of ice, they could have gotten a prettier actor to play him (aaah, personal preference, I suppose). The guy doesn't need to be able to act with this kind of boring character, he just needs to pull of a good-looking face of eternal non-emotion.

Ah, I was thinking the same exact thing. Everybody keeps saying that KHJ is a horrible actor, but with Naoki's character it doesn't even really matter. If he can keep the same expressionless face on for the entire series, then he will, ironically, have nailed the part. He just needs to sit there and look pretty.

Every thing in Naoki's(male lead) life had order and function. He had pride in who he was and lead his day to day life without any missteps or mishaps. As they say in the Taiwan drama he didn't have an "oh no!' moment until he met kotoko. She literally humanizes him. Bringing accidents and chaos to his perfect prideful world. His interactions and reactions to other people in the beginning are stiff and reserved, but to kotoko he takes pleasure in her suffering and he doesn't really no why at first. Then he starts to get possessive of her at odd moments and also doesn't know why. Emotionally he is stunted and acts more like a preschooler who likes a girl and pulls her hair to get her attention. He has to grow up and this is his journey to do that. To figure out why he behaves this way, what he wants to do with all his brain power, and who he will share that life with. but the story is told mainly from Kotoko's(female lead) perspective.
It is a 20+ year old story that influenced a lot of the shows and manga we have today. The fact that it goes through the majority of the couples life from highschool through college is also a very big deal. We get to see the pay off and in a big way.
It may not be your cup of tea. but the story can be seriously cute and funny if acted well. Naoki's subtle emotional changes around kotoko are truly a pleasure. It is also the main reason the mom is so important. She is the first to see her son finally react to things and behave like a normal teenager and she realizes it is kotoko doing.

Very well said, it is about Naoki finding himself, and Kotoko loving him unconditionally despite his outwardly cold appearance it was love at first site. Of all the version I adored the anime the oddly then the J-Drama and the long T-drama...looking forward to the K-drama. Thanks for bringing me up to speed on on the history of the manga in cultural contest, yes bringing the story from high school to colllege to life and still keeping the romance alive is phenomenal. Except that niether of the dramas showed that. Perhaps it was subtle in the manga, but in the TW version, it felt like it was a constant, and then all of a sudden he was in love and nice to her.
I guess I have issues with the way the drama was written and acted, because I can understand wanting order in your life and being angry at some person who destroys your whole routine (and in general your whole perceptions on your life). And perhaps falling in love with a person who shows you this whole other side to life. BUT the drama failed at doing that and instead just made him to be a jerk and her silly.
I think I'm not getting my hopes up because I feel like this version will do that same thing...I won't lie though, I hope that this version ends up being what you described the story to be.

[plot spoilers below for those who have not seen any version of this]
I completely respect your opinion on ISWAK but not sure we saw the same things. He displays small little smiles at her misfortune almost immediately in the Taiwan version and is consistently concerned over her welfare from almost day one of her moving into the house. He simply can not voice it cause he has nothing to compare the emotion to. (ie the test sequence, who's scores get checked first...hers!) He goes out of his way to tease and mess with her every chance he gets. It can be difficult and painful to watch at times because he is so emotionally screwed up and we are only getting the story from her point of view and she is not exactly bright enough to figure him out. Even when he finally confesses multiple times to her throughout the show she can't figure out what he is talking about(there first date is an example of this). Xiang Qin is in my opinion the dimmest version of the character who shows the most suffering. It can be hard to stomach watching her cry and wail in frustration over and over as he picks her apart, but once she figures out his methods(gets his number) Lord knows she uses it to full effect. I have never seen a male character so wrapped around the finger of of a female lead. His world literally succeeds and fails on her words by the end of season one and his borderline obsession with her in season two almost breaks them up for good. (One of the best scenes is Ah Jin explaining jealousy to Zhi Shu. Followed soon after by the cafeteria confession. and the make up sequence at the hallway. I love it!)

Ah, Diadda....
What you just wrote touch the romantic in me and make me want to rewatch ISWAK.
I agree with some who say that it's painfully long. Not to mention the too stupid girl with no ambition nor obsession at all. Except for the guy. But nevertheless it's very enjoyable and fun to watch.
Yes, Joe Cheng could kiss. Although I no longer remember the exact story, I remember that kiss under the rain very well (it's one of the best kissing scenes that I've ever seen). I almost swoon! What a kiss!
And the stupid girl still couldn't figure out what it means!! That how stupid she is.
And I love seeing how the guy starts to fall for the girl without even realising it himself. How he starts to take the girl side against his little brother without being too obvious about it.
And I remember the smart little brother hates the stupid girl with a passion. And till the end he still couldn't understand how come his perfect brother falls in love with her. I love this little kid. He's awesome.
Now, that you mention how the girl wraps the guy with her little finger.......you're so right!
The undeniable evidence is their wedding day! I still remember how shock I was seeing their get up!
I'm going to open my DVDs collection now and rewatch ISWAK...

Maybe I just have to watch it again, lol. And thank you for your well thought and explained response.
I think it was hard for me because I had watched Ariel in Love Contract first, so watching her go from a strong girl to this sort of whiny girl was really hard to do. But I'll try it again, and see if I just didn't give it a chance.
But I don't think I can ever forgive Xiang Qin's best guy friend, ugh, noooo.

Ah, I love the make up scene ! In the part 4 clip you can see the romantic and the grumpy Zhi Shu.

@pipit
ISWAK has two kisses that were really nice and one or two others for effect but, They Kiss Again has (in my opinion) the sexiest bed scenes in the history of television and it is shot from the shoulder up. If only every girls honeymoon night was like that...woah!

I just hope that they don't make the whole family looked and feel obnoxious. I love how the family was portray in the TWversion...the Dad was very sweet and loving and he didn't really interfere with the "lovers"...instead he hangs out with Kotoko dad most of the time. Little brother is hilarious is like Naoki mini version and the mom is the one who trys by all means to push Kotoko to Naoki, but everything she does its major fail but also is great to see that independetly of Naoki the mom comes to love Kotoko like her own daughter and vise versa. I hope the writers keep the essense of the family, cause they do play a key role in the drama.
Question...does this PK includes just high school/college years or marriage life is included also?.........

I hope they go all the way. The Japanese anime version has 23 ep (if I remember it right) and be able to cover it all.

The family characters are spot on, just in the original version the main guy never likes to take family picture, in fact he hates it (all cheesy things), they should make him scold or something rather than smile like that, it will be more interesting.

I wonder if they're keeping the part where you see little Kim Hyun-Joong in a dress. That was so cute!
Oh btw, sorry to break the news to you, but Kim Hyun Joong's parents are supposed to be over-the-top funny. They're a nuisance sometimes.

eh....but the thing is, Naoki's (HJ's character's Japanese name) family is very over-the-top, particularly the mother. In fact, Kotoko (the femal lead) is the same in some ways. Maybe they'll tune it down for the k adaptation.

i think it'll be interesting to see what the ratings are for weds & thurs as soon as playful kiss premiers. it looks like a challenging slot, esp for Girlfriend is Gumiho since Baker King is coming to an end and would probably finish off strong.

I TOTALLY LOVED ISWAK and TKA...although at first i shared similar views about how Ariel Lin's character (Kotoko in anime) was so stupidly ditzy...but at the end i grew to like her...and Joe Cheung plays well as the cold hearted Naoki...i'm currently making my mum watch it and she loves it...I really like this drama so i dont know what to expect from the korean version...hopefully they will do a good job of it...but my expectations arent that high...especially after Boys Over Flowers...which i spent most of my time watching the 2nd leads...Kim Bum and Kim So Eun xx

i think Kim Hyun-joong can pull-off this role this role as the main lead is very serious guy who doesnt talk a lot :)
inspite of me, kind of looking forward to this drama. i really didnt like Kim Hyun-joong in BBF. i hope he is much more watchable in Playful Kiss

i hate how they dolled up KHJ in BOF. He looked like an Asian version of Ken. Orange hair and red lips??! The only eye candy that made me watching few episodes of BOF was Kim Joon!
