Gumiho vs. Kiss: Vote!

As you know, an epic showdown is approaching, with My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho and Playful Kiss both airing on Wednesday-Thursday nights.
Girlfriday and I have literally spent hours (HOURS!) trying to figure out how to handle recaps of both dramas (if Playful Kiss ends up being recap-worthy, that is), and both dramas have the potential to be madly addictive and highly popular with fans.
One problem: We have yet to discover how to make time stand still.
Basically, the pattern is AABB or ABAB. We’re ignoring ABBA.
Vote for your preference below, and we’ll let the numbers do the talkin’.
BIG FAT CAVEAT: Barring extenuating circumstances, we will abide by the winning pattern. However, we reserve the right to change our minds if, for instance, one drama starts sucking the mighty big one halfway through, in which case we want to feel free to bump up the better performer. And we are not making promises as to WHEN these recaps get put up. We are mindful of fan fervor and would love to be as fast as possible, but we also want to leave room for, you know, life and stuff. We will promise to try.

If couple on Playfull Kiss can pull the string what ISWK Joe and Ariel on Taiwan Version made, Playfull Kiss can over beat Gumiho. I am a fan of Shin Minna but on this case, I vote for ISWK coz the series was so good and i was addicted to it. Can wait for Korean Version. Hopefully both couple not over face expression coz Taiwan couple really cool.

gumiho, gumiho, kiss kiss. Why? i've watched both taiwanese & japanese version. so, i'm not that anxious to watch any other versions of the manga for the time being. I mean, the story line/ idea is not that different. we all knew the ending, so waiting for a while for the recap is okay.
Now, the Gumiho, I AM WAAAAYYYY MUCH ANXIOUS! It's still a mystery at least for me. Still wondering what the end is gonna be. will it be like Han Ga In's Bad Boy or will it be 'everybody happy' endings? what with the 'blue pill, red pill' option and boy, those sexy glares and killer smiles of our Gumiho Hunter is... *sighs*

GG PP, Agreed, seems like Playful Kiss will be so predictable that recaps in the beginning will be slightly unnecessary, where as Gumiho manages to surprise me every week ...Sexy Ridiculously-Emo Gumiho Hunter...sigh

what made special about ISWAK was the chemistry between all the actors, not only joe and ariel, but the mother, father, little brother....they gave life to these common characters, they were cute and funny making this plain love story adorable to watch!!!

I totally agree with you. There did seem to be a drama slump this summer, which has caused my summer to be drama-lacking. I basically just rewatched my favorite episodes of Oh My Lady!, Personal Taste, and You're Beautiful all this summer.
I'm happy that Gumiho and Playful Kiss are interesting and fun romantic comedy dramas, but sad because they will still be airing once school starts back up and I have to put school before drama watching.

I vote AABB..its easier to follow this way.
whichever comes first can be decided by both of you..you can put up recaps for the episodes that were more interesting first...

In the end, though, whatever works out more easily for both JB and GF should be the way to go!

It is hard to pick, since they both are good in their own way. While the Hong sisters have created many hit dramas, Group 8 are doing remakes, but then Boys Over Flowers was an instant hit. Its up to the numbers who's better.

I'm not really that excited for Playful Kiss's premiere even though I love KHJ. There are some obvious doubts about this drama that put me off a bit.
Besides, what about the "one cannot live while the other lives" plot of Gumiho? I'm a sucker for dilemma such as this! (HP fan!) lol

i have a feeling kiss will have NOTHING on gumiho, judging by the long trailer. they seem to have taken quite a bit from the taiwanese drama and manga with a few new/different/more korean kicks here and there.
i'll be WATCHING gumiho and likely dropping by here for recaps of kiss, if i don't like the first episode. i still dig your guys' thoughts and comments, so i'm looking forward to gumiho recaps too. =)

i don't think so since your gumiho's leading actor and actresse are old enough to watch and the story line are boring..no matter what the outcome of playful kiss, we khj's fans are support him all the way!!! obviously, this blog are for lee seungi's fans!!!!

Darn it! I chose Gumiho, Kiss, Gumiho, Kiss, but have now changed my mind to Gumiho, Gumiho, Kiss, Kiss. I guess my preference is with Gumiho since it's not a remake of anything and it seems like a deeper drama.
But then really, you guys are the recappers. I'm not sure if either or both of you are students or work some stressful job- don't feel pressured to squeeze out all those recaps if you don't have time or are too stressed!

What # 8 ais said. I'm all about MGiaG right now. I wanna lay down with MGiaG in a sweet-scented meadow and play hoi-hoi. Ergo, I voted Gumiho, Gumiho, Kiss, Kiss, but I'm also amenable to Gumiho, Kiss, Gumiho, Kiss as long as the Wednesday Gumiho is recapped before Wednesday Kiss, and Thursday Gumiho is recapped before Thursday Kiss.
To All Voters Who Watch on ViiKii:
I've confirmed with the ViiKii uploader of Playful Kiss that "PK is licensed already that means that it will only be available for general viewing a few days after."
So it appears that we're looking at Friday-or-even-later viewings for Playful Kiss. So if the recaps come up super-fast, there's only so much we can contribute if we haven't seen the episode. Whereas the subbed videos of MGiaG always go up the same day, hence the reason so many of us can partake in the discussions. That's why I voted Gumiho, Gumiho, Kiss, Kiss, so recaps generally get timed to when I can actually watch the episodes and revel in the awesomeness of JB and Girlfriday and my splendid, most excellent fellow posters (my God, I am such a kiss-ass).
Ultimately Javabeans and Girlfriday, you need to do what's easiest for you. Seriously. No one is going to die waiting for recaps.

Good point there. I think a lot of people watch on Viikii, and with incensed dramas, there's always been that question of whether to cheat and read the recap first or wait for the subs.
But yeah, like Lahlita said (pretty name!), dude, do what you want. :)
I haven't seen Gumiho yet nor have I cheated with the recaps, but I am pretty psyched for Kiss. Ultimately, I'd love a ABAB or BABA pattern, just for some variety.

Has it been decided that you're doing the recaps for the Wednesday episodes of both dramas? Would it help if Girlfriday took the Wednesday episodes of Playful Kiss, so you each have a Wednesday ep and a Thursday ep? That way you don't have to feel pressured to recap two dramas post-haste as Girlfriday wouldn't be behind you for both.

We've considered all possibilities. We're trying to find that sweet spot of what works for us AND what people want, but there is also one key consideration: We also have lives (read: jobs and stuff) outside of the blog so there is a need to prioritize, as there is no way we can do everything instantly. (Somebody create that machine!)

You know, JB, I was following recaps for Cinderella's Sister and TWWSWTM, and if I recall correctly, sometimes the recaps were coming out thisclose to -- or even after -- the next week's episode had already aired, and it was fine. This recent thing thing where recaps are coming out next-day/same-day is a splendid treat for us, but if push comes to shove, the sweet spot is definitely closer to what works for y'all, you know?
I have yet to understand how you even have lives outside of this blog. I feel like updates on here happen round the clock!

LOL ditto this. I mean, I'm reading DB even during work hours, so I don't understand how this happens! (Then again, I think the time difference between countries is working in my favour since I'm working whilst y'all are supposed to be sleeping and vice versa)
Anyhow I voted Gumiho x 2, Kiss x 2, only because I've done the whole Kiss bit, and I'm really looking forward to Gumiho more. The story's heating up quite a bit!
Also looking forward to SS (hoping you guys will recap that as it looks fairly exciting, but wondering HOW on earth is that going to be possible??)!

i usually catch it on tudou.com, though mastering of the chinese language would be a pre-requisite since the subs are in mandarin and navigation around the chinese web isnt that simple. uploads are done approx 8-10 hours after airing. perhaps if you don't mind, you could catch the raw versions before reading up on the recaps?

Honestly, I think a lot of us here already have a general idea of Kiss' plot (new Korea twists not withstanding), so my vote goes to GGKK. I do hope Kiss is good enough to be worth recapping, but Gumiho is all brand new stuff and I will be DYING to know what's going on. :3

This is very true. I've seen both of the previous versions of kiss, and even though the length scales are tremendously different, the content and plot were pretty much the same. I can't imagine the Korean version differing much.

i just watched the 9 min long preview and totally NOT FEELING IT. KHJ is dry and emotionless. no doubt JSM will carry the show whereas Gumiho has a solid cast and the storyline is unique (not a remake like Kiss).

If Playful is worth watching then:
Gumiho, Kiss, Gumiho, Kiss
(Because Dae Woong and Gumiho have worm their cuteness into my heart first and I'm and so far I've enjoyed watching the drama)
If it disappoints then:
Gumiho, Gumiho, Kiss, Kiss
(partially because I already no the story line from It Started with a Kiss, the Taiwanese version and Itazura na Kiss, the Japanese live dorama)
Hope my first choice wins!

Just watched the 8min trailer of Kiss, and despite my reluctance before, I think I might like Kiss after all. The tone looks different from ISWAK, but I'm liking it a lot so far (esp JSM's Oh Ha ni's portrayal!).
but gumiho is always, always my top priority, so that's my vote!

It would interesting on how the ratings would turn out this week since MGIG and PK cater to similar age groups (although MGIG would soon have a more melodramatic feel). But nonetheless, MGIG fighting!!!!!!!

I always figured that once the series starts, the schedule of recaps would naturally follow. If one is more interesting, it'll end up being recapped more frequently. Kind of a "survival of the fittest" for recap-ing.

That is one possibility. But we still need to prioritize dramas, as it does take hours to churn this stuff out and there are cosmic limits to how much work we can do and how fast.
(We do have responsibilities in life outside of DB!)

Kiss is based on less recent manga adaptation (little similar to other dramas already floating around eg. Boys b4 Flowers, first crush / love, infatuation from a distance initially.... then closer, lover minor quarrels, misunderstandings, etc... OK if u like that stuff & appeal to younger audience) = if I could generalised a bit - GIRL & BOY MEET, ONE LIKES THE OTHER MORE OPENLY AT THE START, CIRCUMSTANCES FACILITATING CLOSENESS, A FEW HURDLES / MISUNDERSTANDING ALONG THE WAY (A FEW DIE-HARD LOVE RIVALS ON THE WAY), A DIRECT OR INDIRECT CONFESSION UNEXPECTEDLY OR AT PUNCHLINE, EVENTUALLY HAPPY ENDING...... after hours of watching+++......
GUMIHO is fresher, original, more creative storyline, great female & male actors' chemistry, engaging & more tense - deception, sacrifice, cute & sweet characters may die!!!! Love this drama.... Hoi... Hoi... Hoi... (nine tails dying to come out ^_^)

GKGK for me!!! I'm enjoying Gumiho and will watch it first before Kiss, EXCEPT if Kiss is super-addicting and well-acted by both leads, then I might swap the order......not sure......

I do not know if I can take recap. of 4 episodes of cuteness and students drama. I would prefer you to continue to recap Gumiho and recap fugitive,at least it is a different type of drama.I would have gone for GGFF. How about going for another vote please!

JB and GF-love your recaps. You are only humans.That's only so much you can do. Once you commit to recapping Kiss, you won't have time to do Runaway. I would love your sense of humour in recapping an action drama.
