The Housemaid gets U.S. release

IFC Films picked up North American distribution rights for The Housemaid, which debuted at Cannes in May and has sold over 2.3 million tickets in Korea since its release.

The erotic thriller by director Im Sang-soo is a remake of the classic 1960 film, and stars Jeon Do-yeon as the titular housemaid who seduces Lee Jung-jae away from his pretty young bride, Seo Woo. Things don’t pan out exactly how the maid would like, so she takes her own kind of revenge. I don’t know about you, but I didn’t need much more than this to seal the deal for me. Sold.

The film’s producer and president of Mirovision, Jason Chae, said, “We’re extremely happy to find IFC as the North American home for our film. We’ve always been impressed by IFC’s passion for Korean landmark films and this is an honorable deal.”

IFC has introduced films such as Secret Sunshine (also starring Jeon Do-yeon),The Chaser, and The Good, The Bad, The Weird to North American audiences in the last few years, and has been championing Korean films to gain a wider audience.

Mirovision is eager to set their sights high on the Oscars and the Golden Globes, with IFC’s bid come award season.

The film is a success domestically, and Mirovision also sold the rights to Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong, Italy, Australia and Greece, and the film will be released in France on September 15.

IFC is planning for a North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, after which the film will spend a few months in the festival circuit, before hitting theaters in the U.S. early next year.

whoa yes! rights sold to singapore. haha, fortunately, unlike for shu (above), i don't need to worry about the film ratings since i'm finally of age! just need to worry about the 'revenge' plot being too much for me, since i've kind of got a weak heart for thrillers/suspense & horror

OOPS! Sorry GF...I thanked JB instead of you. I usually try to be very careful about that. :-(

In my meager defense, I was on my first (but certainly not last) cup of coffee, plus I'd clicked THE LINK and gotten my brain scrambled again. :-D

i can hardly wait as i like both actors here...Lee Jung Jae was always good in all his roles such as in Il Mare, Air City among a few i can name right now...and JDY is such a professional, she doesn't seem to mind even if she takes on a daring role i must say. They're both excellent what can i say?
I hope tho that it'll be shown online soon as i think next year is quite a long way to wait for its US release!

It sold rights to Australia! Yes!!!! We never get foreign films unless they are in festivals or big names like Departures (and even that only went to arty type cinemas)
How exciting- Seo Woo is basically the love of my life, so I really badly wanted to see this! I wonder if it will just be a DVD release or cinemas

Oh, I hope it's MA15, not R18...
I can't imagine this would be so bad to justify an R rating *reassures myself it will only be MA*

Thanks for the news, GF!

watched it and was majorly disappointed ... cinematography was gorgeous but the character & story development was dragged out and DISJOINTED. it was garbage.
maybe its because i watched the original "housemaid" and this one differs on many levels.
actually no its not that either.

my bf liked it though... (and there's my only positive statement about it)

...I saw Jeon Do Yeon in person when we went to her NOA entertainment agency last week in Seoul!!! She looks more prettier in person & when I told her that I loved all her movies...she smiled back & said Thanks!!! ..but of course, I couldn't take a picture of or with her cuz her over-eager manager covered her & said NO!!!

...our "real motive" for going to NOA that day was our desire to 'see' (read "stalk") Gong Yoo... but instead saw Korea's Cannes best actress!!! ..not bad!!! LOL!!!

I saw part of this movie online, but i am sure IFC will do as much as possible to remove it before a US debut. It is very intense, very noir, and very beautiful. It
should do well in the Western market.
