Go Hyun-jung quits Daemul, then comes back

I don’t think I’m going to believe that SBS’s Daemul will actually make it into being until it’s finally on the air, considering the way it has been plagued with production issues.

Most recently, leading actress Go Hyun-jung, who was cast two years ago playing the nation’s first female president, clashed with the production company and was ready to leave the project. With both sides not budging, broadcaster SBS stepped in to meet with Go in a hours-long negotiation, and managed to coax her back.

Lest you think she was pulling a diva stunt, she seems to have fair cause and I wouldn’t have held it against her for leaving. The production, Yigim (Lee Kim) Productions, sounds like it’s a bit of a mess, and keep in mind that they’re the guys who sued her for supposedly wrecking the filming schedule when she joined Queen Seon-deok, after she’d waited a year for Daemul to begin and been released from her obligation. (The production had already had director switches and delayed filming at that point, so it seems they were fishing about for a scapegoat.)

According to an SBS rep, Go’s dissatisfaction stems from the various production delays and problems. The drama is within 2 months of its broadcast date and hasn’t begun filming, which is a growing worry for the actress. Daemul was supposed to begin filming at the end of last month, but shooting was then pushed back a full month. A leading female role has yet to be cast. Producers had broken the promises they’d initially made to Go when she signed on. SBS began to worry that the show wouldn’t materialize, and the rep said, “She could no longer overlook this situation, so a week ago she presented the producers with her final card: quitting.”

Yigim’s CEO also gave an interview on Wednesday (the 21st) stating that the drama would absolutely continue and denied any rumors of problems, but that glossed over the growing tensions. That day, Go expressed her frustrations to SBS, and the next day SBS arranged a “secret meeting” with her to negotiate her return.

For now, the conflict appears to be stitched up and both sides have reconciled. For now.

One wonders how much she has passed up to keep these commitments, without additional remuneration for the delays that is costing her income. Actresses tend to have a shelf life, and if she were in Amercia, she could sue the pants off of the production company.

A quick Google search said this production company had been banned before from all the stations. Is that true? They sound like one hot mess. Why would she work with them again after they sued her? Do they have some sort of bargaining chip against her?

i hope they don't sue her again if she really quits, it's not her problem if the production is a mess, if everything she is the one who should sue them because she can't make another project while tied with this Daemul production team = she's loosing money.

anyway i love Go Hyun Jung i can't wait to watch her acting again.

so i read like the first line was so going to pass the drama...i do like kwing woo bt the drama's whole appeal lies in the pairing to me and the setup with these 2 actors in mind...its good that she's back on...bt i guess it eont be too agonizing if this project gets dumped either because I have way too much on my plate anyways

Well this is a hot mess.. I wonder what would happen if after all this drama on Daemul pre-production the ratings during its broadcast would be lower than expected? That would suck..

They must be paying extra big bucks for her to be in here. I have a feeling this series is not going to turn out good if things are already in mess like this. lolz

what makes me rather confused was, why all the problem is related to her?
I thought KSW's current state is more worrying, since he got some criticism after his hit and run accident, and I read somewhere even the polices who was on the job when it happened got punishment.

Anyway, I hope this drama will able to live the premise, because the story is interesting, and I really want to see GHJ again - I skipped Queen Seonduk.

GHJ has to be careful with this Production co. Yigim is the one behind the messy of pre production of YEH latest drama "My Fair Lady". They're also having problem before with Park Shin Yang that cause him been banned from Korean drama. So after these fiasco I'm confuse at why top star like GHJ & KSW still want to work with them...

this really bites! The production team should just scrap this drama and plan for a new one. And how long can it take to cast someone?

This project has been ongoing since 2007 and, I think, even before War of Money (both War and Daemul were manhwa from the same author.) It's, on paper, one of the greatest non-sageuk female star vehicles ever put together -- it's a well-regarded manhwa, it is a What-If about the first would-be woman leader of their beloved nation, implicitly whoever plays the female president is reasserting her claim as queen among drama queens, etc.

Which is why SBS has long tried to land the uber-list for this role. Before Go Hyun Jung, SBS were trying to get Lee Young Ae (for years!!) or Kim Hee Ae, both who can bring big fanbases by reputation alone. I think they were even flirting with the idea of going younger with the female lead, and casting a Kim Sun Ah or even a Yoon Eun Hye. Daemul was and is literally the "big fish" SBS has been trying to land.

I'm bringing that up, because on most other circumstances, this project would be dead already.
