Possible extension for Personal Taste
by javabeans
Producers for MBC’s Personal Taste are currently in talks to extend the drama another four episodes, bringing the total to 20 rather than the scheduled 16.
A source with MBC’s drama department stated, “We are sounding out the issue of an extension cautiously. In the event the cast members agree to the extension, we are looking into four more episodes. This will be decided within this week.” A different source within the same department said, “We haven’t decided whether to extend the drama so we don’t know how many more episodes there will be. The production company is also deliberating whether to extend or not.”
Getting the exhausted actors onboard for an extra two weeks has been indicated as a prime issue, as they may not feel up to more all-nighters and hectic shooting schedules. Also, actor Kim Ji-suk is scheduled to enter army service just four days after the intended finale. The production will have to figure out how to manage without him, or work something else out.
The drama is managing with ratings numbers that are okay, but not great (low- to mid-teens). Still, in context the performance has been relatively strong, and this is the station’s highest-performing show in this slot since 2008, considering that MBC has had failure after failure (numbers-wise; I’m not talking quality here) in the Wednesday-Thursday race. (You can read more in this post, which details the trend.) As such, there’s some hope that Personal Taste may begin a revival for the broadcaster.
Furthermore, Lee Min-ho is once again attracting buzz for his performance, and as with his star-making turn in last year’s Boys Before Flowers, he’s setting fashion trends (for Jin-ho’s breezy, office-casual stlye) and getting more CF deals as a result. As the romance with Sohn Ye-jin heats up, viewer responses have been generally favorable.
Personally, I could swing either way on this. My default setting is to oppose extensions, because even a well-paced and skilled drama may be derailed by sudden changes. I can think of tons more examples of dramas that were hurt by extensions than were benefited by them; if it neither hurts nor benefits, I’d call it a victory. (One pretty benign example: Dal Ja’s Spring.) Personal Taste is rather breezy and I’m content with its writing, so it could pull through… but I’m reminded of Pasta, on the other hand, and certainly wouldn’t be crushed if they kept it to 16.

Yeesh. It's like MBC doesn't want me to have a life. Cause you know, it's all about me! :)
I think PT's plot moves fast enough that an extension wouldn't land it in Pasta territory. *shivers in horror*
If the coupling happens at the same point as anticipated, then we get post-climax conflicts within the relationship, I might be okay with that. I like seeing past the curtain of the we're-meant-to-be moment, where conflicts get more real.
But if by "extension" they mean slower beats and more meaningful looks over the same number of conflicts? I will curse you and your firstborn, Show!

This is one drama I don't feel needs an extension. I thought it was progressing fine for 16 episodes. With how the last episode ended (if it wasn't his imagination again) I'm afraid for all the drama clichés being thrown in to keep them apart longer until the end ):

How much say do the scriptwriters have over the length of the dramas? I'd think that they would be the ones consulted first about possible extensions because they're the ones who have to write the extra episodes, but it doesn't seem like they have that much control. Do their contracts require that they comply with any extensions that are decided upon?

My gut instinct is no.
I think the pacing will get too slow with the extension (or the angst level would be unbearable).

Ah, why can't MBC be pleased with quality dramas? What is with the constant need for ratings? Excuse me if I'm wrong, but isn't it the one who was responsible for Tamra Island's cut? And that baseball drama?
Though I wouldn't mind if Personal Taste pulled in a little more ratings-wise. I think it deserves it more than other "blockbusters". But if in MBC's bid for raitings it ruins a perfectly good series by the extension I will curse MBC to the death. If the extension is granted, I really do hope they don't try to push the exhausted stars too hard, and extend the plot and not the existing conflicts. Please, writing, don't let me down. I only shudder to think of the directing, which has never been strong to begin with. Please don't drag. Please.

naah...that wont help this drama...we've already reached a kiss by ep 10..so things are gonna getting pretty clear soon with the gay-not-gay thing..if theyintend to extend they could end up doing the same thing over again...event hough i have to admit that i dont find LMH's role particularly appealing (i find him kinda dull..maybe its the gujunpyo aftereffect...)...bt i am yet to dislike him...an extension could do that for me...i dont want to dislike LMH!! ( in character or otherwise)

As much as I've been loving this drama, I'm really leery about the chance of it being extended by four extra episodes. I've yet to watch a drama that has actually benefited from an extension. They either end up dragging things out(painfully), putting in boring filler material, repeating angsty scenes to hammer home an already dead point, or they introduce some silly new character(out of the blue) or new problem(also out of the blue) that ultimately serves no purpose, other than stretching the drama out to its conclusion.
I understand that fans would love to see more of their favorite actors, and extra episodes provide more screen time...but, it shouldn't be done at the expense of the overall quality, tone, and pace of the drama.

I think OML needs an extension (2 more episodes) but not PT. Maybe just a special episode? I'd like a very nice epilogue Jin-ho and Kae-in's story as well as the other supporting characters.

As for PT, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. An extension is really not needed. The pacing and story is fun. Why risk messing that up?
I agreed with 61, OML is the one that needs the extension. The plot/romance there has much more to develop and only 2 more episodes to do it. This show has me worried(in a big way) they will do a fast forward 2 years and... blink bam boom, now they are a happy family. I really hate that cheat. Worse, they will blend the families without the love story development at all. "I love your daughter and you aren't as bad as I thought, I guess we can all stay together," The End. Ahhhhhh! please don't let it end like that.

@Diadda, Ace, et al:
As I am just catching up with Oh My Lady, I can concur that it probably needs the extension more, unless there's just not going to be any romance. Which doesn't have to be a bad thing, I suppose.
But since its follow-up drama has set its premiere date, I doubt there's much room for OML to get its extension. Unless, of course, Coffee House decided it suddenly needed extra time to prepare and wouldn't be ready in two weeks. And perhaps the best way to delay said drama would be to
kidnapappeal to its lead stars, say Mr. Kang Ji-hwan. I volunteer myself for the effort! Purely for OML's sake, of course.Required fields are marked *

Wow, since I watched it long after the fact, I didn't know DJS had been extended, funny since my only complaint about the drama was that it was a couple of episodes too long... still love it, though.
I agree with girlfriday, commenter #38 and others that they could maybe pull it for two epps if they let them get together and go for the conflicts within the newly formed relationship, but more likely than not they'd just give us 10 more episodes of In-hee and Chang-ryul's brand of evil-dumbness and that I could not take.

Although, now that I think about it, if they pick up the pace they could do the whole inner conflict thing within the remaining episodes, because the last episodes have been a little draggy at times.

Hmmm, I think 16 eps is pretty good. I don't mind seeing more Lee Min Ho and Kae In, however, I don't see what they can do to extend the drama (Come on, they will start their 1st date this week...). If they force themselves to do so, I think the tone, the pace and the quality will not be as good as the beginning, plus it will be another draggy drama ...

Do you need a driver for the fan based pleading efforts to extend the life of such a great drama like OML. I absolutely loved Kang Ji-hwan in HongGilDong. I am sure he would listen and if not I would be next to Kang Ji-hwan so I would just have to find my consolation for the loss some other way :)
A more serious note...Another reason OML won't be having extended episodes, Super Junior is basically starting promotions right after. While Taecyeon of 2PM seems to be ok with doing it, Siwon may not be. Sooo sad for me.

Well some of LMH's fashion trends in PT are sorta questionable to me and I do agree that the shoes & no socks them (unless they're those low socks) don't go well together. If he doesn't have socks on, I think it's pretty gross.
I really really hope they don't have an extension. I'd rather go on a high note & have everything end well like originally planned instead of set plan but drag it out even more to kill the audience. I think like others have mentioned & you JB that extensions do usually do well for a series. I really hope they stick to 16 & not possible 20. I like the series but not enough to stick around for an extra 4 eps.

I'm on the fence too. My gut also says no way - cause extension always hurts. However, I just love love love this coupling and the chances that would happen again is pretty much zilch so I don't mind seeing them on screen together just a little longer. Is that so wrong?? LOL But I'd still hate this drama to get derailed b/c of an extension.

Leave it at 16 epis, I already expect nothing else will make me fully excited as that passionate kiss in ep.10, even if there are any revealing bed scenes. That'll just get tacky if it succumbs to that extent.

Have the powers-that-be already decided to go ahead with four
additional episodes? Is that why I've already seen some sites
listing PT as being 20 episodes long?
My first reaction to this dramabeans news flash was ~ HOORAY!!!!
More of SYJ and LMH, more of that brilliant cast, just plain more. Great!
I vote for 187 extra episodes. Yeah, that aught to do it! :)
BUT.....the writers have done a good job of building the storyline slowly.
Some viewers think too slowly, but I think that everything in every drama
or comedy needn't be written at warp speed. The additional cast members
are a pleasure to watch. Whatever happens, it will be sad to see the break-up
of this team of talented actors, who work so well together, bouncing off of
each other's talent.
I guess that what it should end up being, is for the actors to read any new
scripts, and see if it's there on paper.....the PT magic. If it's a good, logical
continuation, then they should go for it. If not....if all of the worries (from the
above comments) seem to come true ~ a dragged out storyline, amnesia
from out of nowhere, ridiculously phoney plot twists, etc........ then we should
just say "bye-bye" to the very talented cast and production crew, and thank
them all for a job well done ~ at 16 great episodes.
The above opinion has ~ NOTHING WHATSOEVER TO DO ~
with me being able to buy the DVD of PT, sooner rather than later. :) :) :)

I fully agree with Grace, the one from Jersey, USA on the last sentence!
As I have commented earlier, I too say NO to an extension. It will only drag the pace and I really wish to see the drama end on a high note and also for JH and GI to get together asap instead of throwing in something boring just to fill up the extra 4 episodes.

Yes, #74 ~ Christine ~
Our brilliant opinions have everything to do with artistic quality,
and nothing whatsoever to do with watching LEE MIN-HO smiling,
thinking, driving, frowning, yelling, whispering, crying, etc, etc.
or just standing around doing nothing.
And we both have no intention of watching the DVD
of "Personal Taste" until our brains fall out.
Right? :) :)

I agree with most of the comments here. The gay issue is being resolved, the misunderstandings has been played. The romance is in full bloom. Now we just like to see a fantastic ending. Any more would ruin the show. Fillers will always seem like fillers.

OK, you're "on" with the support group when PT ends.
We just have to agree on the location for ~ The Rest Home ~
where we can receive treatment for our LMH addiction.
Not that we really want to be cured, though. Heh, heh, heh.
However, if LMH takes ANOTHER YEAR to find his next acting
project, we will certainly be forced to become very dangerous.
Sounds good to me:
