Possible extension for Personal Taste
by javabeans
Producers for MBC’s Personal Taste are currently in talks to extend the drama another four episodes, bringing the total to 20 rather than the scheduled 16.
A source with MBC’s drama department stated, “We are sounding out the issue of an extension cautiously. In the event the cast members agree to the extension, we are looking into four more episodes. This will be decided within this week.” A different source within the same department said, “We haven’t decided whether to extend the drama so we don’t know how many more episodes there will be. The production company is also deliberating whether to extend or not.”
Getting the exhausted actors onboard for an extra two weeks has been indicated as a prime issue, as they may not feel up to more all-nighters and hectic shooting schedules. Also, actor Kim Ji-suk is scheduled to enter army service just four days after the intended finale. The production will have to figure out how to manage without him, or work something else out.
The drama is managing with ratings numbers that are okay, but not great (low- to mid-teens). Still, in context the performance has been relatively strong, and this is the station’s highest-performing show in this slot since 2008, considering that MBC has had failure after failure (numbers-wise; I’m not talking quality here) in the Wednesday-Thursday race. (You can read more in this post, which details the trend.) As such, there’s some hope that Personal Taste may begin a revival for the broadcaster.
Furthermore, Lee Min-ho is once again attracting buzz for his performance, and as with his star-making turn in last year’s Boys Before Flowers, he’s setting fashion trends (for Jin-ho’s breezy, office-casual stlye) and getting more CF deals as a result. As the romance with Sohn Ye-jin heats up, viewer responses have been generally favorable.
Personally, I could swing either way on this. My default setting is to oppose extensions, because even a well-paced and skilled drama may be derailed by sudden changes. I can think of tons more examples of dramas that were hurt by extensions than were benefited by them; if it neither hurts nor benefits, I’d call it a victory. (One pretty benign example: Dal Ja’s Spring.) Personal Taste is rather breezy and I’m content with its writing, so it could pull through… but I’m reminded of Pasta, on the other hand, and certainly wouldn’t be crushed if they kept it to 16.

I don't know, but I also don't think it's a good idea though. Even I like their chemistry now, I'm scared that 4 more episodes will make it draggy.
How about a special episode? like, a story after the ending?
Don't know about the ending yet, but you can make like, for example, if they don't get married until ep 16, make a wedding episode.. that would be fun, no?

I hate extensions; the only drama which I thought was decent despite the extension was Pasta and I feel PT already lacks story so I'm against it, but oh well.. Just please please no extension for CS. I'll die from the overdose of angst if they extend CS.

Hi, javabeans!
I've been a resident lurker here on your site for like... forever! I really like your style of writing. Hope you don't mind me relaying news that I get from you back there on my own blog.
Anyway, I completely agree with you on the subject of extensions. Usually it does more harm than good, what with viewers already wanting the happily-ever-after endings and getting four more episodes of lover's quarrel and such.
I'll be more than happy to have Personal Taste end on a high note with ep16. :)

I'm on the fence on this.
I'm tremendously enjoying PT so far and i definitely doesnt want an extension to cause harm to it. but the writing has been good, maybe the writers should decide since they know better if it will only hurt the drama or not. the novel has 16 chapters too right? i wonder if the episode of the drama right now stops at equal chapter of the novel. yes, usually extensions hurt the drama more than not. but there's also drama who has abrupt ending. i dunno. but 4 extras is kinda too much. the risk of it dragging the show is high.

Yeah, I agree with djes -- a special episode would be most bang for the buck in terms of pleasing everyone concerned, for fans who want more of the 'happy ever after', actors who need to move on to other things / get a good night's rest, and producers who want to squeeze more out of the drama's success -- and they can film kim ji-suk's part in advance if they plan it well.

Given how the last 2-3 episodes have flowed, it looks like the producers are eyeing for a 20 episode show, should they get the green light.
There's enough stuff here for extension (Kae-in's absentee father, the implied war between Jin Ho and, really, Chang Ryul's father), but I think any extension will essentially change the tone of the story into a full-on melodrama. It's already moving in that direction.

As much as I'd love to continue seeing Jin-Ho and Cae-In's life together, I'd be on the side of just making a special episode to show how they live together at Sanggojae raising their family!! Please make it a happy ending and don't ruin the whole story! Please also make them honest and true people instead of dramatizing too much. That'll ruin the whole show for me. Thank you!

I'm against an extension for Personal Taste right now. If they drag out the whole gay/not gay thing, I really don't think it can get any beter, and that's pretty much the whole plot. If they decide to focus more on the project, that can't be good either since Kim Ji-suk will be gone and it will seem rather pointless without him there. Not sure how the writers will manage with this.

I think 16 may be too short for the fans. 20 ep is fine with me. I believe LMH may not come back to rom-com drama soon so why not ? Let's see what the writer can do.
I didn't like the drama that much in the beginning, but because of the solid casts , it keeps getting better and better, so it's kind of a late bloom. If they plan it well, it may pull through nicely.
@tina
I do agree with you. If they can come up wilth such brilliant happy ending finale that satisfy us all, 20ep is fine with me.

oh i HOPE there will NOT be an extension! as i finish uni on may 13th, and episodes 15,16 come out on may 20th so i would be able to hold myself till may20 to start watching it (however cinderella story is 20 episodes and have to wait another 3 weeks instead of 1 week for it to end). so PLEASE do NOT extend it!!!! and i hate when they think of extending the drama while it is airing, no matter what, it will SOMEHOW effect the storyline, and plot in a negative way (either exhausting some aspect of the story, or just ruining an ending or a character). so PLEASE do not extend it =(. I love lee min ho and i need to start watching it a week from when i finish uni..

First, thank you both JB and GF for all your recaps. They are absolutely WONDERFUL and make our days. I agree with other comments that in themselves they are such gems ! God Bless !
Am also of the opinion that there might be just too much of a good thing if they extend. Leave when the going is good. Go out on a high . . . a special might just be a good compromise.
Make it tight and 16 + 1 should be more than enough. I had actually gone off Kdramas as they were too long and switched to Jdramas, then back to movies as the thought of going through 8, 10 or 16 hours drained me ! Especially if they turned out to be duds.
Had decided to give this Kdrama a try as I wanted to view something light and watch SYJ in a comedy and see how she pulls this off. Have liked her as an actor and wanted to see her in a different genre. But the BIG BONUS has been the WHOLE cast and was very pleasantly surprised with LMH's acting ability ! Don't like CR father too much but the rest are lovely. Playing characters well that you love to hate, pity, hilarity in between with the eccentric and stylish wardrobe has put a BIG SMILE on my face : ) . . . and hope it will stay on till the end at 16 or 20 episodes . . . PT Producers - Please just continue to do it VERY WELL that it does NOT become a drag !
PS. This is my first comment ever on a blog . . you do call this a blog right ?

Mm..i think i`m more cons to the idea of extension. Statistically speaking :P ...the number of failures are much more than the success one. Four is too much, if it`s one or two episodes, i guess it`s okay...Anyway let`s just wish for the best..

I can't remember any drama where an extension was an improvement to the story. It has always been rather the opposite.
Since both main characters have already confessed their feelings for each other more episodes will be dragging.

i wanna give PT a chance. i don't think an extension will be considered if MBC knows that it will just be a failure and i think they'd still give us the fun, light, breezy feeling PT always gives us. i'd formally decide if i'm pro-20 episiodes after i see episodes 11&12! for now, i'd go for the extension :)

Please no more extension if it will just go to the part where Inhee and Chang ryul are trying to keep this two apart or more schemes to make Kae in and LMH characters miserable. If they will do more LMH scenes (just like the kissing scene..lol) bring it on. If the extension will just stretch the plot that it becomes boring, nevermind. I am loving the chemistry of LMH and Kae in so am looking forward to the remaining episodes.

I don't think an extension's a good idea. It'll mess up the pace. As of now, I think we can pretty much expect the show to wrap up nicely given the pace it's going at right now. Adding another four episodes will just drag things out too long. A special episode at the end would be great, though
P.S. As i'm reading this the Personal Taste header is up on your blog, lol

No extensions! SYJ's character is now less annoying and I can actually sit through a whole episode and I am actually enjoying the show, particularly because I have been pleasantly surprised by LMH's acting and I particularly like the acting of the actor who plays the museum director. I'm afraid that extending the show will put me in the I'm really annoyed with this show mode again. Can't they just keep it short and sweet?

Can't say the news in unexpected. As for the drama extension, hmmmmm, I mean, they COULD do it and pull through nicely, or they could mess it all up. Cute/funny episodes(like episode 6) might add to the series but angsty misunderstanding separations will definitely get me off this track. Whatever the case may be, the point is that I am going to finish the series damn it! I don't care how you take me there, I WANT A HAPPY ENDING!

I watched Pasta recently without knowing it ever had an extension and I honestly didn't notice. I thought the pace stayed about the same (pretty slow, but I didn't mind), although I didn't think the competition at the end was the best way to go out.
Then again, I felt the same about Coffee Prince's (1-episode) extension, and a lot of people complain about that one.
Smile You, on the other hand, got so draggy after the extension that I gave up.
I thought Dal Ja's Spring was best in the latter half of the series, so I definitely think that one benefited.
As for Personal Taste.. my instinct says no, especially if it means they will be trying to contrive lame reasons to keep the couple apart. But maybe they could make it work. (I personally really like it when they put the couple together and and find the inner conflicts, like in DJS.)

I don't think they should extend it. So far most dramas I have watched have been hurt by the extension and considering that one of the main 4 characters will be in the army just makes it that much more risky. I think the actors can pull it off but so far the story has been flowing nicely so deciding to add 4 more episodes this close to the end might hurt the story dynamic.

I love the drama, but the extension has more potential to hurt than help the series, in my opinion...since the secret's almost out anyways, please don't agonize the viewers and keep Gae-in in the dark any longer! The plot has been on the slow side but the humor and acting has kept it going...I don't know how that'll be with 20 episodes.

I vote for no. Extensions dilute and drag out and introduce unwanted consequences. To fill out 4 extra sessions, they have to invent some filler/side actions etc which will preclude or exclude certains natural endings as they were original planned.

If they can dedicate at least one full hour of those 4 ep extension to just a full on make out session between LMH and SYJ, then it would be good :)
kidding aside, if kim ji suk won't be available for the extension,it's definitely no. How do you end up with satisfying story without one of your main characters in the last 4 eps? And no, please don't kill him off. He's an ass but his sins aren't bad enough to warrant the death penalty.
As for in-hee... I wouldn't mind her getting killed off if it means girlfriday can wear her intestines as a necklace :)
