Jang Hyuk picks next project with All About Eve
by javabeans
Hot on the heels of his latest success playing slave hunter Dae-gil in Chuno — which ended this week — actor Jang Hyuk has announced his follow-up project: a Chinese remake of the Korean drama All About Eve, which was a hit back in 2000 when it starred Jang Dong-gun and Chae Rim (and Kim So-yeon as a scene-stealing second lead, playing the ultimate villainess role).
According to Jang’s management Sidus HQ, he will take the role initially played by Jang Dong-gun. The series is set in the broadcasting industry, and the original had Chae Rim and Kim So-yeon as rival rookies, while Jang Dong-gun played an experienced PD. The character played by Chae Rim will be portrayed by singer-actress Zhu Dan, while her backstabbing rival will be played by Taiwanese actress Cheryl Yang.
The series is planning for a September premiere on Chinese television.
I don’t know the actresses involved so I can’t weigh in on them (anyone?), but I’m a bit wary of an All About Eve remake. Unless they rework the story a lot, doesn’t it seem rather old-school? (Bad girl schemes to one-up good girl whom everyone loves, particularly the handsome, rich, and senior colleague who rides to her rescue. It’s the classic Cinderella tale, but without a clever or modern twist.) Jang Hyuk had been planning to make his entry into the Chinese market with a television series, which he gave up to do Chuno, so I guess he’s eager to get back on that horse now that he’s free again.

The actors and actresses of AAE from the leads to its support were perfect to play their part.
There will be a Chinese remake of it because AAE is very, very popular in China. That's why Chae Rim is loved by the Chinese people, it all started in AAE. Anyway, the best actor in AAE would be KSY, but I loved the chemistry between JDG and CR to the point that I want them to be together in real life. :( *sigh*

I don't know what it is with joint productions, but they rarely come out in the quality I prefer, and are almost always disappointing. At the moment, I can't think of any successful collaborations, even recently with the highly popular Schemes of A Beauty, which was a collaboration with TW and HK, communicating in the same language and look how that drama turned out.
@Mookie: I agree, when I need some quality, well-acted, well developed and transitioned, natural, realistic fare, I look toward Chinese dramas. Each country/region has it's strengths, but considering the diversity and competitiveness of China's Ent industry (which also has to compete with the increasing popularity of foreign entertainment), I tend to find more quality productions from China (though not as popular internationally). But considering that China produces on average 500+ dramas a year, there's a lot of discrepancy between the regional TV dramas/genres and more prominent productions.
I have to say this news isn't inspiring my interest, even though I think Cheryl Yang is a good actress - quite natural and detailed - and I like Jang Hyuk. I don't have a problem with stars migrating into different markets, but I do have a problem with stars making allowances they ordinarily wouldn't accept, in order to do so. I don't know about the script, quality of the production values, or other factors, but hopefully JH and his mgmt chose wisely.

Cheryl Yang is a fantastic actress. Her 2009 drama, My Queen, is a must-watch! (She and her co-star, Ethan Ruan, just sizzle on screen.) She'll be perfect for her role in this project.

Thanks, Qwenli, saw the stills on the chinese website link you provided... what the heck happened to JH's hair? I don't think he looks good in that long hair. Awkward looking if I may put it that way. Preferred him with his clean cut hair style prior to Chuno days.

I thought a big production ancient political series would be more apropos for JH's China debut (a la Ruby Lin's Beauty Scheme - very well made). Considering 1) he's riding the Chuno wave, 2) dubbing is more frequent and easier to ignore in ancient dramas, 3) China's ancient dramas tend to have MUCH better writing, acting, and production value.
I would love to see him do ancient again, but with more political scheming than fighting (tho I do love those abs)! =) My 2 cents.
