Choi Jin-shil’s brother Choi Jin-young commits suicide
by javabeans
OH NO.
Only a year and a half after his older sister committed suicide, now actor-singer Choi Jin-young has been discovered dead after taking his own life on the morning of March 29.
Choi Jin-young’s body is currently in the funeral hall of a Kangnam hospital in Seoul. A rep from his side said on the afternoon of the 29th, “We heard the sudden sad news from his family. We heard that he has passed away, but we were not told the details. We are stricken with grief.”
Much-beloved actress Choi Jin-shil‘s death rocked the industry when she committed suicide after battling depression in October 2008. Her mental anguish was aggravated by the constant malicious harassment of a netizen who accused Choi of contributing to the suicide of her friend, fellow actor Ahn Jae-hwan, just a month prior. Those two deaths were the first in a series of celebrity suicides that followed (many of those celebrities were said to be battling depression as well).
After her death, an ugly custody battle unfolded between her family (Jin-young and their mother) and her ex-husband, former baseball player (and deadbeat dad and abusive husband) Jo Sung-min, who eventually relinquished his claim after massive public outcry. Her two children were being raised by Jin-young and their grandmother, and Jin-young had taken on a fatherly role to them. He was even planning on making an acting comeback — he announced plans to return to television just earlier this month. He had announced, “I’ve got to earn a living and start acting again for the sake of my niece and nephew. I’ll have to show them in person what kind of work their uncle does.”
Choi Jin-young battled depression of his own, and sank into a prolonged spell following his sister’s death. It is believed that he died by hanging; his mother discovered his body at home and police were called on Monday afternoon. Choi was 39.
Below, he is pictured with his sister’s two children.

Yep, poor kids and grandma.
One thing I find about all this suicide thing in Korea is that maybe it is in the culture? I mean one of the ex-president jump off a cliff too right?
More help should be set up from social/government groups to provide hotlines for counselling depressed people.
Also I think one thing that contributed is the lack of access to another language, if most of the celeb can learn another language and travel out of the country and live overseas for awhile, they can then take their mind off their problems and recover better.

I remember him in 'We Got Married' and he seemed like a really nice & sweet guy.
I feel sorry for him because if he decided to suicide, it means that he must have been in a very very very deep pain.
I hope that now he finds some peace. RIP

I'm so shocked , and I feel intense grief for this family. I'm so , so sad depression got the best of him. I feel for all of them: for the sister and brother who faced a pain so intense they ended their lives, the mother who lost both children so suddenly and in such a cruel way, and the little children who have to live it all... It's beyond imagination that a family have to endure so much pain, it's just heartbreaking. It's such an unfair thing, no one should be submitted to this amount of pain, I wouldn't wish it for my worst enemy... What can we say? I'll pray for them, for the ones who left this world suffering so much anf for the ones who are left... I'll pray for the grandmother and the children.

OMG! What can I say. Tears just stream down my face and my heart feels and ache for the family. I just cannot imagine the pain that their mother is feeling; to know that both her children were so depressed and in so much pain that they took their own lives. I can only pray for God to give this family who is suffering strength to pick up and to go on. I just cannot imagine the anguish and utter devastation that this family is experiencing. May he rest in comfort in the arms of his sister and peace as he crosses over!

That is just so tragic. The poor kids and the poor mother of the two Choi siblings. I hope their friends and family do their best to support them. I can't imagine the sort of pain they must be going through. They had probably started to heal from Choi Jin shil's suicide and now this....RIP Choi Jin-shil and RIP Choi JIn-young.
Now I'm afraid- who is next? and will the kids have to go to their father now?
And I also wonder if there is such a thing as a depression gene. Two siblings committing suicide...

wow.... im still reeling from shock.... somehow not surprising and understandable but still extremely shocking... I wonder how the kids are going to grow up.. i hope they wont grow up in resentment knowing netizens were the last straw to their mom's suicide and the chain of grief in the family... and will they eventually have to end up with their bad father??! and poor grandmother. i cannot even imagine her pain. I remember Choi Jin Young from We got married... he was only there for one episode but i still remember him... how must it have been hard for him... sometimes, i do think of suicide but reading this makes me think twice again. my heart goes to all of the Choi family..

Condolence to the Choi family...this suicide thing is such a no-no in our Catholic country, but that it's so rampant in Korea is quite a shock!!!
Losing a loved one is devastating in itself...but dying in your own hands is mortifying!!! I pity the grandma who has to bear losing both of her children, but more so for the young kids...to grow up with the stigma of 2 suicides in the family...RIP

May his soul and that of his sister rest in peace. My heart goes out to the two children and his mother. Depression is a mental illness and unless you went or experienced it , it is difficult to explain what really goes thru that person's mind. Support from family and a lot of friends plus treatment/therapy from a qualified provider is very important. I am a huge fan of his singing and two of my favorite songs My Love ( from Lets Go to School Sang Dong) and the ballad from Super Rookie were his songs. My prayers to his family. RIP.

I am truly saddened by this, and it makes me wonder how those two children can grow up normally having lost both their mother and uncle to suicide. I have to ask this, but why does it seem like the Korean acting industry seem to have a high suicide rate? Or is it that we just hear more about the these types of death in Korea than anywhere else in the world?
In any case, I pray that God keep these kids safe, and my condolences go out to the family.

So tragic and sad.
My heart truly goes to those two kids who has lost two of the most important people in their lives, his mom, and close friends. I don't know what I would do if I had lost one of my siblings either and even though I don't think I would go to this length, but these things are unpredictable and I hope people do realize that help is out there. You just need to reach for it.
And other personal thoughts regarding suicide aside, I hope he and his sister, Choi Jin-sil, rest in peace.

I'm saddened to hear the news as well. Depression is very serious and tough to deal with, and since we don't know the whole story, I wonder if there was any way that the outcome could have been different. I feel bad for the entire family - having gone through so much. I hope that the mother can get the support and help she needs to heal and to move on. It must be very difficult.
I also pray for the children, this has to be having a big effect on them. =( I wish only the best for the entire family and RIP CJY.

Omona! Another one?!! How sad. I really do think that the South Korean government or actors society or whatever needs to do something about the people in the Korean entertainment industry. It seems Korean entertainers commit suicide every year, which is not a funny thing or something to brushed off lightly. Something is seriously wrong. Also, I think netizens need to stop with the harassing. Not all the time but most of the time they are somehow involved. Anyhow, my heart goes out to this family and I hope that wherever Choi Jin-young is now, he is no longer in pain. God bless!!!

Depression is a scary thing. With these public figures committing suicides, I can only think there is great shame in getting help. Who are you going to trust when you are famous? Why does it have to be some shameful secret when it can affect so many lives?
My heart goes out to his family. I hope they find help in grieving and keep the good memories alive.

@98 I agree w/ you. Korea should really address its high suicidal rate. And continual portrayal of suicide as a "solution" in kdramas and films do a DISservice to those who are suffering depression or hopelessness.
