Seo Ji-hye drops golf drama

Just a few days after the main cast was announced, lead actress Seo Ji-hye has dropped out of the golfing drama Birdie Buddy [버디버디] (which I had mistaken for Buddy Buddy; the series is based on the manhwa Buddy).

According to production company Group Eight, Seo had agreed to play the role of talented golfer Min Hae-ryung and they proceeded to the final negotiation stages, but differences arose on both sides and she decided against the role after all. After the rest of the cast — led by Lee Yong-woo, UEE — participate in the drama’s production press conference on the 10th, the production will begin looking for a replacement.

Well, this makes my decision easier — without Seo Ji-hye, this drama isn’t much of a draw for me. I’m okay with UEE — she wasn’t bad in You’re Beautiful, although she wasn’t particularly great, either — but I shudder to think of Lee Yong-woo leading a drama with such limited experience and bland acting. It’s probably a smart thing for Seo to leave while she can and not be weighed down by Lee Yong-woo. (That may sound harsh — and I will always amend if he proves me wrong — but have you seen Style? Eek.)

UEE wasn't bad in You're Beautiful?

You're right.

She was horrible. She had about 2 facial expressions. No range, not at all. Why she's offered another role, I have no idea.

That's too bad. I wanted to see Seo Jihye in another drama - I think she's adorable and talented. The production definitely needs to pick up another talented actress or this project just might bomb.

On the other hand, I disagree with you mishane. I thought UEE did a nice job as Yoo Heyi. The character was a very believable and I actually gained interest in UEE because of her acting.

Good! :-D I'm so glad she dropped out.

SJH deserves to be in a better drama with a better cast. I just hope she doesn't pull a 'Nam Sang Mi' because it's just not worth it in this case.

hmm...thats sad. not sure how excited I am about this drama.

On a side note: Javabeans, I know it's called Birdie Buddy, and I'm just starting to learn hangul, but I don't see the Birdie in that title at all. Wouldn't Birdie have the r/l character on there (sorry, on a non hangul friendly pc)

You know... people don't seem to seem to give this drama a chance since it has the actors they don't like, and the type of genre that didn't seem to succeed in the past. I remember people complaining about Park Shin Hye having the lead in You're Beautiful, yet they ate her up when the drama actually was showing. Did people forget about her mediocre performance on Goong S?

Who really knows. KDrama fans can be real fickle sometimes.

I wouldn't say it's that fans are purely fickle, but more that we like to make informed decisions. As #6 says, I thought Park Shin-hye was awful in Goong S but good in You're Beautiful -- credit where it's due, but before a drama airs, a person's going to go on the information available at the time. It doesn't stop me from watching the show, but I don't think everyone should be barred from expressing reservations before a drama airs, either. I don't think it's too precipitate to look at the actors, producers, directors, writers, market history, and pop culture trends to gauge how you think something will turn out.

6, besides: have you SEEN Style?

Lee Yong-Woo was not just a little flat or off. He was really, really bad. At first I thought it was a directing choice - certainly there were plenty of WTF moments there - but as the drama progressed, it became clear that there were serious acting flaws going on. I had no idea what was happening with his character. Some of the blame goes to the writing and directing, but when an actor can't communicate basic emotions to the audience for episodes at a time, one has to wonder.

I'll probably give the drama a couple episodes, just in case it is charming, but I'm not holding my breath.

What's up with all the actor-production disagreements and fighting these past few weeks?

Seo Ji Hye was the only thing about this drama that made me think that PERHAPS it might turn out okay, despite my reservations about both the plot (it sounds like Invincible Lee Pyung Kang with more golf, really) and the rest of the leads. Now that she's dropped out though, there's simply nothing else to look out for. I hope for the sake of the production that they find another good lead actress, even though I probably won't be interested anyway (I mean, GOLF? Really, Group Eight, GOLF?)

I didn't think UEE was *that* bad in YAB. I didn't think she was good, either, and yes, she was rather stiff and 2D, but I think she still did okay with her Yoo Heyi character overall. She managed to make Heyi sympathetic by the end rather than absolutely hateful. That said, I reckon she should get smaller roles to build up her experience; it's rather too soon for her to take on such a big one. As for Lee Yong Woo, I haven't actually seen his acting (and from what I've heard, that might be a good thing, LOL).

Had to agree with JB. Uee was ok in YB but Lee Yong-Woo was really bad in Style. Am surprised he was cast as a lead in any drama.

JB, agreed with you, I still cannot believe that I endure 13 episodes of Style before I drop it like a hot coal, I also endure 8 episodes of Dreams,
9 End 2 Outs, was the only drama that had a sport related theme the I have seen in full, the guy from Style may be good looking, but his acting really sucks!!!!

I really don't like golf and yeah, Lee Yong Woo isn't the best actor of all time, but I'm going to give it a chance. Who knows-- maybe it'll turn out to be a gem. I don't see how a sports like Golf can do it but I won't judge it just yet.
