Oh, I'm totally with you on Kurosagi, sister. What a waste of the lovely Horikita Maki. I was responding to a comment on the last OT (I know, sloppy and untimely of me) in which someone was recommending Kurosagi as an intro to Yamapi. Hmm.
I might have to disagree with you on Buzzer Beat. It was fun, but surely it was not GOOD! What a going-nowhere plot. Mind you, it has Yamapi execute one of the hottest kisses in J-drama history, so maybe that's worth the price of admission. I thought all Yamapi's co-stars in BB acted circles round him. Yet I couldn't dislike him. Perhaps this is the Mystery of Yamapi; and so perhaps BB is not such a bad introduction to his mystic, after all.

Good news, my @ simplesim-moni posted a review of the CH subs with the Director's Cut DVD set at soompi.
"The subs are very good and perfect english but can't be compared with BON's excellent subs! The emotions in BON subs are so heart-wrenching eg. the water bottle scene."
Whew, that's a giant relief. I don't need emotional subtitles, KSA and CSW deliver the acting homerun in spades and then a river of emotion comes out of their eyes and I'm just turned into a puddle of adoring drool. *runs off to order my set now*

Yay! Mr Dressup! I loved Mr Dressup. And Casey and Finnegan. Also loved The Friendly Giant, one of the greatest kids' shows of all time...
@149 Sere -- I really liked Buzzer Beat, too. I liked that it was pretty short (usual length for a J-dorama, I guess, but seemed short compared with K-drama) so it felt the pace was kind of snappy. I didn't get the whole premise for the penultimate parting, but okay. They looked good together. I started Proposal Daisukunen, but haven't been able to get very far with it, stopped at episode 5 and haven't picked it up again. Then I started Stand Up! but somehow never got past first episode. Yet I would still say I really like Yamapi. Charisma over acting, I guess.

I don't like shopping, period.(my Hubby loves to brag to his friends about that, and they all want to know if I can "retrain" their spouses, lol). I avoid the mall like the plague. If I need something, I just go( like Ann Taylor, Nordstrom and my fav - Target). The sales people (usually the Brea Mall's) know me well...I don't go often, but when I do, I just get the stuff for the occasion. My girls got the blessed genes from Grandma; they loooove to go shopping. That's when I call my best friend, and the dear Auntie will take those two while I babysit her 5yo..see, everyone is happy.

So, like I mentioned to hjkomo, had a horrible work week, culminating in my computer monitor catching fire this morning when I turned it on at work, and immediately smoking up my office and had to be replaced temporarily by this lopsided one with a screen color ratio that's all wonk. Anyways, that's the story, hjkomo, hard to tweet it. :-)
@ mookie-twin
OMG, after my rants, I can't believe I am saying this......but I don't need to throw my Fox Volant DVD away! Guess what, I popped in disc 6 to entertain my boy who was demanding "that wuxia movie" (he meant LoCH which my sister has), so I grabbed the next available LC drama adaptation. And lo and behold, to my surprise, I guess I ff-ed too much and didn't realize it, b/c Wong Jing also screwed with the OTP canon and I actually love it.
See, so Ling-su dies so that Zhi-yi can have the final antidote (instead of Hu Fe in the novel), but then Zhi-yi needs another dose in 7 years, so HF trudges up the mountain to train and to plant that seed so the flower can bloom. Don't ask me why those two lovelorn kids don't spend the next 7 yrs together other than basic girl won't spend time with guy cuz another girl sacrificed herself for them to getogether (what'evs).
Anyways, sum it up - I got my pay-off in Fox Volant at last, frippin HF and Zhi-yi get married, and then she promptly dies bc dumb as a brick Ruo-lan destroys the flower antidote by accident. But that's besides the point - I've always felt that LC wimped out in the novel but making Zhi-yi and HF fall in love, but then refusing to allow Zhi-yi to become secular and follow her heart (which based on her personality she should have done, ergo why certain people don't like ZY is actually caused by bad writing from LC, I personally like her, she's a spitfire). Here, WJ simply doesn't make her a nun to start, and then the rest flows quite realistically.
Sigh, I'm happy again - someone screwed with an LC novel in a way I would have tinkered with it and then put in all pwetty for me on screen. Catnip for this koala, me so happy. :-) Too bad Athena and Nie Yuan were, shall we say, not quite up to par for that epic death scene, but still, not bad, kudos for making me teary. Now I get to keep my pretty DVD set so I can rewatch that scene. Worth it!
Oh, and my sister raved about the 4seasons HK during her last stay, I will check it out. I always stay at the 4seasons Palo Alto whenever I'm up in the Bay Area.

Almost forgot, saw this poster in front of a DVD store this week, almost caused me to have an accident, b/c I thought I saw Ray Lui, and it couldn't be, but I caught the name of the drama, and lo and behold, have you seen this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Born_Rich_(TV_series)
TVB's 2009 grand tentpole drama of the year, with RAY LUI (he's back! like Michael Mui before him, who's next to return from the yester years - my bets on Kent Tong), Gallen Lo, Anita Yuen (she's back after giving my cutie Chilam a baby boy, awwwww), and Jamie Chik (OMG, now my jaw just hit the floor, MM"s wifey is back after 18 years of being a mommy), and a gajllion new TVB actors I don't know and don't care about. Anyways, RAY LUI - the original Hu Fei, but really, the man who held his own against Chow Yun-fat in The Bund, and stole his girl, hehehe, Ray, you da man! And he doesn't look a day older.
Lemme know if I should break my self-imposed decade long TVB ban and watch this.

I'm still too excited about episode 10 of Chuno! I've always been on the Chuno wagon, but the first couple of episodes didn't excite or connect emotionally with me outside of few scenes even though the quality was excellent. Maybe because the love triangle and the "conspiracy" really gets off the ground in Episode 9 and 10 and everything came together perfectly. And Jang Hyuk...imo, some of the best acting he's ever done is in Episode 10...awesome, awesome stuff.
And like someone mentioned, there is further character development to Un-nyun, so she is more interesting and likable. I'm wondering if it's b/c the writer wanted to show a greater contrast?
There are two things I really want to comment on, but I don't want to give spoilers either so I'll wait till recaps are up. But it really was a fantastic episode...
On Yampi:
Acting-wise outside of NwP, I haven't been impressed by him. But he does have that presence? charisma? that je ne sais quoi to him. I actually think it's pretty interesting to see him being projected as the next Kimutaku-esque actor by JE. The Arashi boys are way more talented...even Takky or Kame imo, are a better actors. But I find that actresses interact with Yampi much better... or is that because his leading ladies are usually pretty talented and he has good chemistry with them? Not sure...

Do you people feel the head spinning when reading OT posts with so many things on the go?
@ 43 mud and City Hall
The fiancee issue is quite a sticking point for many starting CH. It however does not bother me a bit cause I'm more a mature audience (meaning old)!! And the relationship between JG and GH is clearly one not based on the traditional courtship/falling in love "relationship" but rather a business-like "arrangement" to get what each wants. I still haven't got the DVD Director's cut and will have to check my order now.
@ Pasta Watchers
If you can read c-sub, the subbed episodes come out at tudou.com very quickly on the following day. This drama is my biggest guilty pleasure at the moment giving me great giddiness. The flirting between Lee Seon Kyun and Gong Hyo Jin is the yummiest I've seen in a drama. So very sexy! I like how there is not any usual drama angst. The Coffee-Prince-esque atmosphere adds the delightful feel to the viewing experience. It will however be a BIG mistake to extend a drama whose strong point is not the story.
(Just read from Dahee's blog that the prickly customer in the last episode is GHJ's real life boyfriend: Ryu Seung Beom.)
@ Wishing Upon A Star
Who is your favorite sibling? To me, the sleepwalker hands down. I grin everytime when he opens his mouth especially when starting the line 'adjusshi...."

How sad this will finish in three weeks' time. I now understand why family dramas have to be that long. You do need that longer story and time to build the rapport with the families depicted (and become part of those families). I enjoy Sons of Sol's Pharmacy but sort of stopped at Ep 11 when the X'mas getaway was over. There is no strong urge to go back although I know I will. Watching AG is quite different though. I started a couple of weeks ago. It was like a breeze to marathon 40 episodes. The simmering romance built on partnership and trust between Lee Tae Gon (!) and Go Nau eun is the initial driving force for this marathon. By now, I care pretty much all the characters (including the mamaboy doctor and Kkeut Soon whom I hate at the beginning). The cheating father is even becoming one of my favorite characters!
@ Family Honour and Thundie
Not to give you spoiler, there will be explanation about the age gap between the grandfather and the forever drunk sister (ie Pal Kang's work friend in WUAS). Another great family drama! Kim Young Ok is once again superb here as the loyal housekeeper.
@ mookie and ockoala
Don't you think Kim Nam Gil will make a perfect Linghu Chong in Xiaoao Jianghu (The Smiling Proud Wanderer)? I haven't watched QSD but did see a few clips at YT to see what the fuss about the Bidam movement. I've only seen his bit roles previously in Be Strong Geum Soon and Lovers but his Bidam's performance got both the charm and emotional trauma required of the Linghu Chong's role.

@missemergency
There was a bunch of OTers who watched this when JB recommended it. I liked it but didn't love it as much as MNIKSS. Loved KHJ's acting and thought CJM was very cute and adorable. What I don't understand is how she can be a virgin at that age. She is attractive, smart, and interesting enough to pique the interests of two men in her 30's but never had a relationship with a guy in her late teens and 20's? Weird.
@ thunderbolt
The age of the various family members had me stumped as well and after spending some time trying to figure it out and totally NOT succeeding, I just accepted it and moved on. The young grandaunt's age is explained in later episode.
My understanding is people got married in their teens in the old days and in yangban class for a arranged marriage you were married really young. My grandma was married off at 16 and her husband was 13yo. She told me she was more like his maid for a few years.
The twin grandson's are in 30's but older than Danah. I think the twins are in their early 30's to mid 30's. One of the twins was married at a young age because he was the oldest son to an older woman from another yangban class and it was an arranged marriage that was unhappy.
Danah has two suitors. The young college kid with the lisp who is probably in early 20's since he mentions going to grad school and Park Shi Hoo who is in his early 30s.
I actually know someone whose mom got pregnant in her 50s so it does happen but they should have made Danah's dad's girlfriend in her mid to late 40's so its more plausible,

OKay, *rolls up sleeve* I recollect this was the story of Fox Volant from the novels (the WJ adaptation put Other Tales of Flying Fox and Fox Volant together to make the drama, otherwise not enough material).
Other Tales is young Hu Fei, where he meets Zhi-yi and Ling-su, runs around with Zhi-yi to steal all the sect leader badges in order to go an ruin the upcoming World Leadership Meeting to spite the Qing, and then he meets teenage Ruo-lan and Miao Ren-feng, and MRF loses his eyesight and lalala HF finds Ling-su and she cures him.
From what I remember, Ling-su dies to save HF, and Zhi-yi leaves at the end of Other Tales bc from the very beginning, she was already a nun, she was an orphan, and she came down to find her birth parents, but she had long ago taken after her master and become a nun, so she was *always in disguise* from the first moment HF met her (hence her name, Zhi-yi, purple cloth, was merely a fake name, she never had a real name, she only had the name her master gave her, Yuan Xian).
I remember that pivotal scene when she tells HF that they can't be together (I call BULLSHIT Louis Cha!) because she was a nun, and she takes off her wig, and HF is about wigging out (and I did as well). ARGHHHH, what I way to destroy OTP. Anyways, this makes ZERO sense bc she is the flirtiest nun I've ever seen, AND she gives HF the set of matching butterfly jades as their symbolic token of affection, and no nun would ever do that. Zhi-yi was always a girl in love, and for her not to elect to return to secular life and pick her guy was inconsistent writing on LC.
Anyways, in the drama, the episode where they get married and Zhi-yi dies is I think episode 31. I watched 32 and then ff-ed a bit, and the rest of the drama goes to hell in a handbasket pretty quickly, so I stopped, but am still content that the resolution of a very unsatisfying relationship was given a proper twist here.
And Fox Volant the novel is set 7 years later than Other Tales, and by then Ruo-lan is an young adult (still a brat) and HF has turned all legendary Flying Fox on us and is quite sullen and withdrawn by then. HF in the two novels is drastically different.
And word on no woman remaining a nun in any Wong JIng production! HAHAHA.
@ A.
Yeah, everything mookie said, I agree! Enjoy your rewatch, Lee Yapeng turns me off, but that's just me, I've heard that production was not so bad. Sometimes we're just in a wuxia mood, I totally get it. ;-)

KNG as Linghu Chong! Hhhhmm, I've always thought Jung Woo-sung would be the perfect k-actor to be LHC, but KNG, I have to sit and mull about this. I think he can do it, no problem, but would he be the best choice? LHC has no shades of grey, he's not really a tortured character, he's a very "I don't give a damn" c'est la vie kinda guy. Well, I think KNG was awesome as BIdam, and will watch anything with him in the future!

And now I'm feeling as much as I'm so entranced by my Yuma kun, the drama itself is not flawless at all. I mean so full of flaws that it's almost painful to watch with that painful theme. Really a less developed version of infernal affairs, sort of, without full character developments, Or because it's season 2, we are past that stage? Anyway, it's plot driven without substances. Really, and this episodes, Yuma kun was absent half the time from the screen. Well, it does lightly touch upon some on-going social issues like Ijime(kids being bullied at schools and after school) which can ultimately lead up to revenges, murders and suicides. But the way they deal with them is so superficial that makes you wonder why bother.
Anyway, I'd better pack.
It's been raining every day here in Ventura county. Yikes. I wonder if cold rain is worse than snow?

Here's a spare thought for anyone who needs an English paper topic.
Thanks to the internet pixies, I watched Hamlet (David Tennant, Patrick Stewart BBC version) again. Then thanks to Verizon, we watched the 2000 version (Ethan Hawke and Kyle MacLachlan - very surreal).
Hey, we're snowed in! We watched The Good the Bad The Weird too - looks awesome on a big screen.
Anyway, back to Hamlet. We started pondering the story and concluded that many if not most sagueks are essentially Hamlet retold. Occasionally you'll get a Henry IV, but mostly Hamlet. Especially since most sagueks end with everyone but 2 loyal retainers and the heir dead.
There - anyone stuck for an essay topic - a free one!
Hey, we made fudge, watched movies and shoveled snow - it's been that kind of day! Now for dinner and to find something to watch.....maybe Slings and Arrows...or Groundhog Day..

From the frying pan and into the fire
@ A.
I've just decided to join you! Yup, going to watch ZJZ's first LC adaptation, Smiling Proud Wanderer/Xiao Au Jianghu with Li Ya-peng. It's the only ZJZ adaptation I've not even seen a single episode, but since my twin doesn't OMG-hate it-poke my eyes out, I'm needing MOAR sageuk wuxias and I feel like teh awesome story is what I crave, and this is the awesomest story there ever was written on wuxia paper.
Saw one episode - just one quibble - how come no adaptation starts off the drama where the novel begins? And OMG, how "old" is Qu Yang, jeez, he looks Zhang San-feng old, and I always saw him like 50ies at most. Anyways, Li Ya-peng as Linghu Chong as a peasant in disguise is actually pretty cool, so far so good (and I totally forgot for a second what a total lush he is!, man can drink). And Li Jie, baby you look so young! Hee hee, this might turn out to be something quite enjoyable.

Great day today! All caught up with Chuno now, and if it gets any better I may go up in flames. Episode 10 is brilliant. Worth at least two repeated viewings.
I also decided to check out The Woman Who Still Wants to Marry and LORD HAVE MERCY KIM BUM IS HOT IN THIS DRAMA! I mean OVERLY. The storyline could go in the crapper and I'd still watch, just for the thrill he gives my eyes. Thank you God.
That is all...back to the hotness. :-D

Don't give up on Family Honor! I really enjoyed it. Some of the age differences will be explained and well, some you'll just have to leave it as drama-land creative licenses.
I am totally loving Pasta right now. Enjoying the Woman still wants to marry. Also liking Perfect Girl. It did threw me for a bit with the difference between the anime and the live action, but for some reason I actually don't mind the differences. This week I was distracted from my drama watching with reading mangas. It's been YEARS since I read mangas but dang, I still like them a lot. Gosh, that takes me back to my childhood. I feel like I am growing younger in mental age with each year...

I had one of those yucky day at work...but it all went away when I got home and Hubby was nice enough to give up his Lakers' game and took me to eat my fav- a big , hot bowl of pho. Somehow, all the yuckiness went poof.
@langdon
Welcome home...I can see the Hwy 15 (to Vegas) from my office, and believe me, you just missed the mess. A lot of people flocked to LV to go see the SuperBowl, rain, what rain...
Have a nice weekend, you guys...later

Whoops, past midnight already. leaving for Japan tomorrow for 2 1/2 weeks. I'll be watching all the J dramas live! On the on the other hand, WUAS, I'll be glue to my computer screen as soon as subs are available. I'm so addicted to it by now. It's cuddly heart warming sort of fun. And who was it? Ms. Langdon? mentioned Kim Bum's new drama somewhere above... You are totally tempting me... After this trip, I'll be indulging myself with that one. I don't know why, somehow, it sounded so yummy , whatever the way you've described it in just one line...

um...let me see BiDam as Ling Hu Chung... maybe?! I don't really have a specific visual for LHC, just think the actor should not give a damn how he looks... one thing crucial ..need that aura of a freaking cool hermit/ alcoholic... (so yup Richie, u r still out)....if we r going international, my vote is with a younger Johnny Depp! or a no brainer would be Odagiri Joe
O @twin... I'm awfully tempted to really sit down and watch the ZJZ now with u and A. watching... *sigh* but I absolutely have no time. I'm only on ep 5 of Chuno and wanna catch up but so far behind now... I think I'll wait till it's all out and do a marathon.
WUAS is messing with me, I'm so not planning to be so involved with it but now I am!! arghhhhh... ok guy2 is flipping and freaky now, but it's not like we're not given hints fr that clone of frankenface, another ex of his (maybe PD is buddy with that plastic surgeon, can't help but wonder)... saying he can appear to be Mr Nice but a stone cold bastard inside?! I have lots of things I wanna know about these characters.... the whole boy grandchild grandpa is looking for, what happend romance-wise to yummy prick for him to be this sour this long... and that whole bro dynamic is sooo saucy! I know the writer(s) may be going a bit dramatique with pushing guy2 down this path, but they're never chums to start out with, he's never been over the top 'nice' anyways, we just know more now (whether we like it or not). I'm fine with it. Finally, we got a romcom that MAY not drag AT ALL... *crossing fingers touching wood :X*
Yes, it's all cliches, but I still wanna know and see everything unfolds!! I'm really really itching to see yummy prick slaving in mad love for PK once he's connect the dot she's THE special one for him, but she's totally oblivious to him. pleasepleaseplease!

@ twin
I love WUAS. It's owned me now since that episode 4 when PK promises to picks a star for Nami. I'm just watching other stuff to pass the time btw Tues until next Mon.
As for ZJZ's version of Wanderer - it is SOSOSOSOSOSO different from the novel in terms of who does what when and where, but still stays on the basic path of the plot, I don't know what to think? I mean, LHC meets freaking Ren Yingying in episode 2!!! Those two's first meeting should never be tampered with, b/c its totally cute in the novel, when LHC gets all drunk (like the 785th time) and is pining for Yue Ling-shan, and RYY finds him and somehow this drunken guy's devotion to this other girl touches her in a way she's never felt before. Awesome!
Not to say I don't like this version, just that its soooooo different I need to compass my bearings. I'm up to ep 4, and I like it so far, the fight btw LHC and Tain Buo-guan is kick-ass, as usual, hahahhaha "I'm ranked #2 in sit down fighting skills" "Are you alluding that I'm a fly in the outhouse that you poke when you're taking a dump!"
As for Li Ya-peng, he's actually really good, much better than I imagined, not as good looking as I hoped, but has the right flair and attitude (btw, I disagree, LHC *has* to be goodlooking, the book keeps telling us how cute he is, he's not as cute a Yang Guo or Yang Kang, but still one of the best looking LC heros in the canon). But in the end, it's the performance that matters, I agree.

We're really being spoiled right now. I've got 4 kdramas I'm following right now, plus 1 j-drama. I think that's an all time high. Fortunately, I'm not watching any BBC or US TV right now, so I'm not glued to the set. Phew!
WUAS - I swear Pal Kang needs to slap younger brother but good for helping to set her up like that. And if he did it just to see his brother's reaction, he needs more than a bitch slap, he needs a good thrashing. Guy2 has his problems, eh - mostly jealousy of brother - but at least he's had an underlying niceness so far.

I thought I've fallen to WUAS, but watching ep 3-6 of Still,Marry Me ( the Women who still want to marry ), I'm totally fall for Kim Bum. Ahhh, he's so fine there. The way he talks to Park Jin Hee.. totally a noona's dream!

I agree--facilitating that clearly unwelcome proposal on Pal Kang was just mean. I never did 'ship' him, but I'm actively against him now. That whole set up was going to be embarrassing for Pal Kang from the start, and he knew that. I can't decide if he now wants PK to take Tae Kyung b/c he's afraid KH is 'susceptible' to her and still thinks KH should marry whatshername out of pity, or if he wants to push KH to realize that he likes PK and thus 'free up' Frozen Face girl for himself. Either way, it's not coming off as very nice.

Hi! from Japan. Yamapi is just simply inexplicably beautiful. That's it. Sometimes, he doesn't even look like a human. He looks like a fantasy shoujo manga prince, the one you only see in your dream, except in this case, you can see him on TV 9pm on Monday night. Code Blue. God, I finally realized why HD vision, big screen TVs were invented! to appreciate those beautiful faces, sure beat computers.(don't have TV at home).

In a scene that came straight out of Seinfeld, my cleaning lady who I fired last week for repeated poor performance decided to come in today and pretend she didn't understand that I fired her last week.
On another note the Letterman ad was the funniest of the night. I actually thought they spliced the video somehow so Letterman and Leno appeared to be in the same room.

@Things happened for a reason
Well, it's been ages that I have seen a single episode of kdrama( there were snippets of OLD kdrama in HKG, but since I didn't really watch them from the beginning and couldn't finish them, so that didn't count ;) My laptop is still at Best Buy(somewhere)so I'm just using everyone else's whenever it's free. But guess what?? I've actually done a lot of stuff around the house and worked a couple more days( to relieve my poor Hubby who did my shifts while I was gone). My girls even commented how nice it was to see Mom not with her laptop( I wasn't on it THAT long, was I?? o_O Don't get me wrong, I DO miss my kdrama, but with each time that the laptop's not available for me to use, it got easier for me to just do whatever I should do( no more procrastinations!) I think God is trying to tell me to "ease up" on the internet(ya think??)
Well, I just dropped off my little one ( the 12yo) (@6am) to camp (Catalina Island) for 3 days. My Hubby thought I would be a sight since it's my baby who's going. However, since I did leave them for 3 weeks not too long ago, I was actually ok( or maybe the fact that I'm severely sleep deprived (too much stress-from work and personal), and it hasn't hit me YET).
@Momosan
I hope you are ok...I heard that the DC area got their share of the Snowmaggedon..hope you are warm and have electricity ( who cares about work, but on snowbound days, you need your laptop to marathon kdrama, right? ;)
