Goong to be turned into a musical
by javabeans
Four years after it was a drama sensation, Goong (aka Princess Hours) is being turned into a musical. (That means that the franchise has a manhwa, a drama, a drama spinoff, and now a theater production.)
Production company Group Eight announced on February 2 that the musical would open on September 3 at the Seoul National Museum’s theater. Group Eight had reportedly considered the possibility of a musical adaptation from the outset, and this version will bring back the main producers of the drama series, including writer In Eun-ah (who’d gone on to write My Tutor Friend 2, Love & Marriage, and — surprisingly? — horror series Hon).
The Cinderella drama that catapulted Yoon Eun-hye and Joo Ji-hoon to stardom was known for its splendid visuals and costuming that mixed classical Korean hanbok and royal garb with a modern flair. The musical will also feature a fusion of song styles, from classical to hip-hop, jazz, and traditional Korean. Dancing will range from ballet (one of the main characters is a ballerina) to court dance to B-boying. Leads for the musical are currently being auditioned.
Aw man, now THIS I’d want to see.

Wow I really miss Goong. Yoon Eun Hye should do the musical, since she a great dancer and she can sing too. I hope to see a new project from her soon :)

I really want to see this, except I really wish it would have been based after the original story by Park So Hee.
As much as the drama was great, there were many differences and things that were changed from the original Manhwa that it was based on (The Eunuch-thats-obsessed-with-Yul and the Grandmama were not creepily perverted enough in the drama... *ahem*). Of course, it may be due to the fact that the manhwa was still running when Goong aired. If I had a wish, it'd be another Goong series, except one that closely follows the manhwa.
Still, Goong is on my favorite drama list. If only I could watch the musical... *sigh*

I should really stop checking if JB posted anything new just by (mis)reading the feeds' titles and jumping to illogical conclusions. For a moment I was sure Gong Yoo was going to be in a musical *facepalm*
Anywayyyyy, I'd really like to see a Goong musical. Can't wait to see who gets cast.

I dunno, I really thought the drama paled in comparison to the manhwa, which was incredibly funny. But the drama had super gorgeous costumes and music, and it would definitely be amazing to see that sort of thing in person!

"from classical to hip-hop, jazz, and traditional Korean"
how awesome is that?!
Goong, imo, has the best ost, if the music in the musical is as good or better than the ones in the drama, then i must book a ticket to korea to watch it.
i pray that they won't cast any idols this time. well unless they are kim junsu of coz.

Was actually from a different franchise^^...
Goong S had the the same director, but was a different company..
& was not based on Manhwa, but a actual historical background of King ChulJong..
Goong S. did benefit from Goong by confusing the two,
as it became the most anticipated drama that year..recording high ratings with the 1st episode (around 15~16 rating, from what I remember)
But they were served with lawsuits, becuz they didn't have the rights to the manhwa story or Goong's brand name...

Goong was my first drama, so it will always hold a special place in my heart ♥
The music still makes me emotional. I think I saw the musical up on the web somewhere, so I'll have to see if it has English subs. Though it isn't a drama particularly conducive to a second viewing...
