Idol star Taecyeon up for Cinderella’s Sister

Huh. After unconfirmed reports initially spread the rumors, now it has been announced that idol star Taecyeon of boy band 2PM will be making his acting debut in the upcoming Cinderella’s Sister.

This news was confirmed on January 25 via phone interview with a source at the drama’s production company, who said, “To be exact, Taecyeon’s casting was confirmed today, the 25th. The contract hasn’t been finalized, but we have made a verbal agreement. Although talks didn’t take a very long time, both Taecyeon’s side and the production side have made this decision after plenty of deliberation. Both sides think he’ll bring out the personality he’s shown in variety and entertainment programs in a natural way.”

Not being a follower of 2PM, I can’t greet this news with any excitement, and in fact I’m more wary than eager. But, as the drama has by now cast three strong actors in the lead roles — Moon Geun-young as Cinderella’s stepsister (who happens to be the not-quite-villainous protagonist), Seo Woo as the kind Cinderella who seeks revenge on her sister, and Chun Jung-myung as the main love interest — I’m taking this one in stride.

Regarding casting a singer, the production source said, “We can’t say that there were no concerns over the low rate of success for singers-turned-actors. However, Taecyeon isn’t the lead for this drama so we’re expecting him to have synergy with the other actors like Moon Geun-young, Seo Woo, and Chun Jung-myung.”

In the drama, Taecyeon will play an innocent character named Jung-woo who maintains a steadfast love for Moon Geun-young’s Eun-jo, leading to a love triangle with her and Chun Jung-myung. Cinderella’s Sister will follow Chuno and premiere on March 31.

I'm sure a lot of 2PM fans are cheering out there, but I just went "Err..."

But like the production says, at least he's not the lead. Yay for Chun Jungmyung!

@46 - Whoa... diss YEH?! no way. I think she's an amazing actress and that everybody loves her! That doesn't really change the fact that MFL had very poor script-writing. If anybody but her had been the lead in that drama the ratings wouldn't have been that good. I was not pitting her against MGY! I was drawing similarities since in a lot of people seem to think that Taec will be bringing in ratings whereas MGY has her own (big) pull - much like YEH. As far as I'm concerned YEH's talent was wasted on MFL. Much like MGY was wasted on that movie she did where she played a blind girl (i thought she did a good job of a terribly cliched story-line).

So yeah, not bashing YEH. I think you misunderstood me.

hm. love taec and 2PM to pieces, but don't know how i feel about this... i mean, i'm sure there are fans somewhere who're hella excited about this, but i really dont know what to think. hopefully his acting doesn't suck...? idk.... if he can do better than kim hyun joong and jung yunho in their respective dramas last year, then that's great. if not... i don't see it mattering, because he does have the star appeal thing going for him, so 2PM fans will be all over that anyway.

I'm annoyed at the floods of people suddenly going, "I'm totally going to watch this... because Taekyeon is in it." Uh...

The thing is, I'm worried for Taekyeon in this, because he is acting against three people who are really good at what they're doing. So for a rookie acting against three experienced actors, that's a lot of pressure right there. And it will only make his acting mistakes much more magnified. Therefore, I'm not exactly thrilled at this news, because I know if he makes mistakes, I'll be bothered about it.

Someone said that it's unfair for him to be in this while a lot of other actors don't have jobs. So true. (But unfortunately, he brings in floods of, well, fangirls watching his stuff, so it'll up the ratings. Though personally, once I heard MGY was in this as well as SW and then lastly CJM, I had already signed up to watch this A LONG time ago....)

Give Taec a chance, who knows he might acts very well than some original actors. I do feel sorry for Idol turns to acting not many good, but YEH is the only one actress made it! all her dramas were either excellent or good to watch. That why she won so many awards in such a short time. MCG is good as I heard but never watch any her dramas sorry, KJM is ok so good luck all fo them.

@A shouldnt make that kinda judgment when we havent yet seen anything

besides,whats wrong with the "flood of fangirls" anticipating this drama because of him??hows it different than people who decided to watch this bcos of MGY or CJM?? the point is THEY BECOME INTERESTED IN THE DRAMA....i dont see anything bad about it at all~~

Aww, poor kid. He's gaining more antis by the second. I was going to follow this drama anyway but now I'm curious to see how he does. I won't assume he's going to suck (that's just mean!) but if he does suck, he sucks. I'm not an idol apologist. He seems like a nice kid (yeah, I follow kpop to a degree) and I wish him the best. Honestly, I hope he does well because I'm a root for the underdog kind of person.

First off, I'm a huge 2PM fan. I love Taec and the rest of the guys and have watched them in variety shows and their own reality shows as well. While it's true what lb_tmi said about Wild Bunnies and how the entire concept was changed due to their *epic* fail at acting, who's to say they can't improve? Why attack Taec before he's even given a chance to show what he has to offer? Yes, being up against the more seasoned lead actors of this show will be tough, but at least let him try his acting chops before tearing him down.

@GaRa

i highly doubt that if the drama succeeds, it will be because "Taec is so hot!!!!" You're not giving viewers and critics enough credit. If the drama succeeds, it will be because of the combination of storyline and acting. With such starpower as MGY, SW and CJM, i hardly think Taec will overshadow them all just cuz he's hot. I was excited about this drama from the beginning because of the 3 main leads, and having Taec in it does add more appeal, but he is not the sole reason I'll be watching. Everyone needs to get their start somewhere, so don't judge until the drama is up and running and there's something to actually base your criticisms on.

I have been a 2PM fan, and since the whole Jay disaster I have followed them very closely. Even though I like Taec, I am not happy about this news.

First off, I don't care if it is someone I like or not, I think hiring idols to work in dramas is a bad idea. Even if they can act, which is a doubtful proposition at best, they can never get totally into character because of who they are. Just listen to fans, already threatening to get upset if he so much as touches a female. I actually hope he has a bed scene, just to make them scream and make it obvious how ridiculous this is - they are there to watch Taec, not an acted role. For an idol, there really is no difference between a drama and a variety show, because they can never fully get away from their idol persona.

Secondly, his management group has been in financial difficulties for the past two years, and they are interested in raking in the cash however possible - for this reason, they are pretty much accepting everything that comes along, so that means Taec is MC-ing a variety show AND working in Family Outing AND is in his first drama AND is supposedly preparing a new album. Something's gotta give, and he definitely is not going to be able to focus on learning his craft as an actor. So he's hobbled from the outset. He is a very clever guy, though, so we'll see.

Sorry for the rant, but the hijinks of idol management companies get me really steamed, lately.

@37 bee:
Ah! Alright! :) Sorry for misunderstanding you. I thought you were saying UEE was mean like her character. I think she did a good job on the drama.

@45 j.oo:
I didn't said that Yunho's acting was the ONLY reason that his drama failed. I said it was ONE of the reasons. When 2 lead lead actors of a drama can't deliver emotions as their character, how can people sympathise with their characters and the story? Of course, it's not only Yunho's fault because first of all, he was given such a terrible script and 2nd: his leading lady Goo Ara didn't helped either because her acting was weak as well. So, NO... it wasn't only Yunho's fault, but he and Ara are guilty too.

You mentioned Yoon Kye Sang & Rain... I think they're very good actors. :) I wish Yoon Kye Sang had better projects though... he desearves it.

--------

As for Taec, I wish him the best. Like i said, I don't think his acting will be as stiff as Hyun Joong or emotionless as YoonA.
I hope Taec quit 'Family Outing' to focus on his acting and music. And I wish Chansung & Junho of 2PM get a chance to act too because they have more acting experience (in Chansung's case) and training (in both cases).

Idols in dramas don't guarantee good ratings.. look at Heading to the ground and You're Beautiful, so if that's the only reason to take TaecYeon, then maybe they should reconsider. I sincerely hope that he will do well (I've been looking forward to this drama since dramabeans first posted about it), but as someone already pointed out, it seems like TY will have to juggle a lot of gigs at the same time. It will probably be hard to focus on his acting.

i'm guessing the production threw him into the drama to bring some buzz. so he's the secondary male lead in the triangle/square? I sort of wish they would give him a smaller but very likable role to test the waters first. sort of like the nephew in Wish Upon a Star (not one of the two guy leads but a very likable character with a lot of screentime). Even Yoona had to take on smaller roles before she got to be the lead in You are my Destiny (which was a horrible drama btw not because of Yoona, but because of the script).

and skelly made a really good point abt idols being unable to shed their idol personas while on screen. I fear for Moon Geun Yeung if Taecyeon so much as holds her hand.

Lets all judge when the drama airs shall we. Anyway this drama didn't really catch my attention but with Taec it has, I'll still wait for JB's judgement before I give it a chnace but atleast now its on my radar.

Btw MFL was a failure because they were all lied to about plot and characters. Also if Taec brings in an audience then so what? People aren't stupid, if the cast is really good then people won't ignore them.

As for the person that complained about girls whining about the second lead not getting the girl, uhm all the dramas from the last 5 years have all gone through that so lets not lay all the blame on this poor guy trying to make a living, its frankly ridiculous. I expect much more fromt he readers of JB.

It's not even out yet and people are hatin on it already. Give the guy a chance. Not every idol will fail helplessly as many seem to think here.

There's a handful of notable actors who started out as idol stars, including the already mentioned Yeh Eunhye (BabyVOX) and Eric Mun (Shinhwa), plus there's Yoon Kyesung (GOD), Bi, Sung Yuri (FinKL), Ryeowon (Chakra) and Eugene (SES).

Besides Moon Geunyoung is probably jumping with joy that she'll be in a drama with Taec. LOL, I'm just kidding. I don't know if she's a 2PM fan, but everyone in the entertainment industry seems to like 2PM.

I'm not very familiar with 2PM but I was under the impression that Taec originally wanted to be an actor more than he wanted to be a singer. So who knows, maybe he will surprise us and be bearable.

But even if he's terrible, I DON'T CARE because Chun Jung-Myung is going to be in it and even if the drama is horrible, I will watch it and just fast forward to his scenes. That's how I got through Fashion 70's :-P

And 5..4..3..2..1 BOMB! The drama fails before it even takes off.

Oh Korea, stop trying to make everyone appear multi-talented. If you're serious about singing, stick to singing. If you're serious about acting, stick to acting.

And why is it that a female singer/"actress" like Yoon Ah would get burned at the stake for her acting endeavors, but when it's a male singer, people go a lot easier on them? Not that I'm defending Yoon Ah's acting, but if you're going to hate, then hate equally.

Hmm...I'm perplexed. I like 2pm and heart Taecyeon...and I was already looking forward to Cinderella's Sister since I love the cast of MGY, CJM, and SW...but it's usually a hit and miss with idol turn actors. But I'm willing to give him a chance, though as others have mentioned if Taecyeon doesn't act well, it will be magnified when the rest of the cast is pretty solid (he's acting against 3 top actors in the industry). Kind of like the opposite of what happend in That Fool, one amazing actor and not so rest of the cast? And that's a lot of pressure, so I hope he does well. There have been successful idol turn actors...so who knows right? Either way I will still be watching this and good luck to Taecyeon in this role.

Um...speaking as a super ridiculous 2PM fan, I really don't know how to feel about this. I love the concept of their group and their performances but I'm not sure how well they'll fare in the acting world.

Although Chansung was in High Kick before, his role was kinda similar to who he was...a high school student. Not too much of a stretch there.
And now, you're throwing in the completely inexperienced Taec and well...the result might not be so pretty.

So, to put it succinctly, PLEASE don't suck Taec. I beg you. ;)

I've lost 99% of what interest I had when Taecyeon was cast in this drama.
Heck, I've lost 99% of all interests that casts Idols as main.

Quite frankly, that one SS501 guy in BOF made me want to cringe so badly every time he came on screen. It was so awkward, I literally couldn't get through 2 episodes.

The only 3 people that it worked out for, are Yoona from Girls Generation[Even this one is teetering on fail], YEH, and Bi.

The only similarity between Chansung and his character in High Kick was that both were high school students. But besides that, they're pretty different in terms of personality. So I think Chansung did a good job in that drama.

@81 Dorkiilove:
You think SNSD's YoonA worked? REALLY?! Her acting is very weak... no emotion and she only has 3 facial expressions when she acts. I think she's the next Kim Tae Hee: she's casted only because of her looks.

@10

WTF are you talking about. Moon Geun Young, Chun Jung Myung & Seo Woo not popular?

MGY is the Nation's Little Sister, she won't be dubbed as that if she ain't popular. Even before when she was younger she was already WAY popular than you imagine.
CJM had a lot of drama offers but eventually picked this before he pursue more mature roles. All his dramas wherein he was the lead had more than 10% in ratings.
SW recently won a popularity award vs. Go Hyun Jung, Lee Yo Won & Park Ye Jin. That's a big feat.

Now you're telling they put this idol member because the leads ain't popular? And he's there for the sake of ratings? Even the very popular leader, Yunho of DBSK(largest fanbase all over the world, including KOREA of course) FAILED to meet the expectations. His drama flopped big time. So don't EVER say that they'll put that guy just for the ratings.

P.S. I really got furious. Just need to take this out.

While he's my fav on 2PM, please oh please don't be so dull. Err, like show some emotions. Crossing fingers (please no awkwardness either).

IMO only 2 singers did well on 1st acting gig >> Rain/ Bi for Let's Go To School Sang Doo and Yonghwa for You're Beautiful .

DBSK's Yunho was too awkward from the 1st episode so stopped watching his drama for the first 15 min he came out. And well stuck to BOF all the way to the end, but I still feel like I'm watching a robot with scenes of SS501's Kim Hyun Joong . They should really stick to what they do best : singing and variety.

Edit:

The person of comment 19 was not talking about the end of the show, she was talking about the concept of the show. 'Wild Bunny' was supposed to be a sitcom where 2PM's members acted in little funny stories, it was not supposed to be a reality show. But on an interview the 2PM members said that they had to drop the concept of a sitcom because they failed at acting so that's why 'Wild Bunny' became a reality show instead. eheheheh :)

"Wild Bunny was discontinued or as you say "didn't happen" because Jay left. Not because they couldn't act… Wild Bunny's a variety show (in other words, reality show)."

if you had quoted me, you would have seen that the "sitcom" Wild Bunny didn't happen because of the members epic fail at acting. there was already filming and still shots that were leaked regarding the sitcom. the show was turned into a reality show--which did happen. and i enjoyed it much more than had it been a sitcom, IMHO. just so you know, i wasn't talking about the discontinuation, as there were 7 episodes of Wild Bunny.. only the 8th ep didn't air because of the Jae issue... just to clarify.

@ everyone that has issues w/ idol stars turn actors..

ppl gotta start someplace... if being a big name idol star gets you to where you wanna be.. then i say go for it. if you're an epic fail, at least you still got something to fall back on... if it works for you.. you got talent.. AND two jobs. :D

heck, actors turn singers all the time fail and return to acting. it's not like this is the end of Taec's career. heck, even if it should lead to that.. i'll support his bony butt and chocolate abs myself!!!

thanks! you get me, you really get me!
