A Man Called God casts Han Chae-young
by javabeans
Finally, more news about upcoming MBC drama A Man Called God. Character descriptions have been released, as well as news that Han Chae-young has been cast as Song Il-kook‘s leading lady.
Hard to believe she hasn’t acted in a television drama (in a role that wasn’t a cameo, as she did appear in a few episodes of Boys Before Flowers) in four years; how time flies! The last drama that Korea’s “Barbie doll” actress starred in was 2006’s underwhelming Fireworks (which was watchable mostly because of Kang Ji-hwan); before that, she had 2005’s Only You and Delightful Girl Chun-hyang. In the interim, she’s mostly done films, such as last year’s Good Morning, President with Jang Dong-gun and the more recent Girlfriends.
A Man Called God is a drama adaptation of a manhwa that is described as a “love story about a modern day hero.” The lead character is “Michael King,” also known as “Choi Kang-ta,” played by Song Il-kook, who vows to seek revenge upon the enemy who killed his parents. He becomes the boss of a secret underground organization and takes on a worldwide drug syndicate. Han Chae-young plays a rookie journalist on the local news beat, “Jin Bo-bae.” As he falls in love with her, his belief that “I’ll use evil to punish a greater evil” is shaken. This role was initially going to be played by Jung Ryeo-won, but she dropped out due to personal reasons.
Kim Min-jong (Return of Iljimae) has been cast as an intelligent, sharp man; a rivalry springs up after he runs into Bo-bae, his first love. Complicating things is Han Go-eun (Can Anyone Love), who takes the role of a woman utterly devoted to Michael King who swears her undying love to him. However, when Michael returns to Korea, he falls for Bo-bae insead.
A Man Called God starts filming in February in Hawaii and will follow Assorted Gems on weekends. Its first episode will air on March 6.

Sweet. I never knew what this drama was going to be about, but it's definitely right up my alley. Any idea if this is a comedy/romance or is just straight up drama/romance? Hopefully the latter...
I'll definitely be looking forward to this.

Sounds interesting. I'm not overly fond of Han Chae-young, but maybe she's improved in the four years since she's had a lead role in a drama. Another one to add to my ever-growing list of March dramas =]

If I have some spare time, I might watch for Kim Min-jong. I loved him in RoI.

I'm glad Jung Ryu won dropped out because as much as I tried...I could just not picture her as SIK's love interest. HCY and SIK look better together. Anyways, it's great to see them back! Especially SIK!

This actually sounds interesting, but I'm not fond of the idea that it's a weekend drama.. I can never sit through them for more than 6 or 7 episodes, because they take foreeeeeeeeeeeeeeever. :(

I'm not certain of the episode count, but there are weekend dramas that don't air 30-50 episodes, so we can hope this is one of them. Style, Tamra, Strike Love, Friend Our Legend -- those were all in the 16-20 range. (Even though Tamra and Strike were cut, they were planned for 20 anyway.)

I'm intrigued. SIK and HCY physically would look damn near perfect as a striking couple. Acting-wise, eh, not terribly high hopes there, but still, I'm game.
I have a soft spot for HCY, because her Only You is one of my all-time guilty pleasures, the drama I can watch anytime when I'm in a ice-cream in bed mood and want to veg out. Good luck to the production, my only hope is that it's not longer than 30 episodes.

I will forever love Han Chae-young on the strength of Chun-hyang alone... unfortunately this show doesn't sound like my style so I'll take a pass. I hope it's a big hit for her sake, though!

Story seems like Batman with a pinch of Superman. LOL.
They better cut the weekend dramas short. It usually gets draggy in the middle.

I will watch this because the lead guy is a gangster 8)
(although I don't really like using the term gangster... it's what you call the low-lifes on the streets. Although what bothers me more is that people think gangsters and mafias are the same thing -_-)
Because it's a change from the previous guys that were heroes and did things good in the law. Yes, call me weird for being happy the lead is the boss of an underground organization.

I am a big fan of Kim Min Jong and always thought that he was way underrated. It would have been nice if he has the lead role as well.

Han Chae Young is THE definition of I-Just-Don't-Get-It.
Not only is her acting crap, but in the K-industry where looks will get you to the top, IMO, she is fugs. Period.

Glad to see her back on the small screen. I guess this means that her fashion drama with Kim Haneul canceled for real?

Among so many actress in Korea, why does it have to be Han Chae Young?? Her acting needs major improvement....

@14 - oh c'mon, i get you don't like her acting chops but she isnt all that "fugs". She's pretty decent looking and albeit she was a tad bit annoying in "Delightful Girl", it looks like she's cleaned up, grown up and hopefully her acting has gone notches up higher...
Curiousity will get the best of me, I'm going to end up checking this one out ~lol.

The plot isn't very interesting to me. Han Chae-young is passable but not a great actress. She's best when she's playing roles like the one in DGCH.

I like Han Chae Young. I enjoyed her performance in Delightful girl, Only you. I didn't see her for a while since then until Boys over flowers where I thought she looked stunning & sophisticated. So I can;t wait to see her in this new drama.

My two reasons for watching the show - the premise and Song Il-kook, who is a pretty good actor. I usually don't care about the leading ladies as SIK has a tendency to make them look good beside him no matter what. Since I don't know this actress, I'll reserve my opinion until after I watch this drama

Han Chae Young? All of a sudden, I'm losing interest in this one already! Was looking forward to a Song Il-Kook, Jung Ryeo-Won pairing. If JRW HAD to drop out, maybe Han Go-Eun should have been bumped up to be the leading lady? IMO, a good-looking couple.

I don't know and never heard of Han Chae Young before, but with Song Il Gook leading this drama, it's good enough for me to watch it. I'll just observe Han Chae Young before making comments, it's just her image is not what I prefer as a leading female for Song. This will be a reunion of Song Il Gook and Han Go-Eun since Bodyguard. In Bodyguard, SIG played a second fiddle, now it's Han Go-Eun's turn taking that role.

Who says I loved Only You for HCY? Cuz I love it for JHJ as well! He's also a guilty pleasure of mine, boy can't act out of a paper bag, but he's such a sweetheart for me to watch. ;-)
