The young cast of God of Study

New posters are out featuring the young cast of KBS’s God of Study, aka the kdrama adaptation of Japan’s Dragon Zakura.

The story kicks off when a teacher begins a university prep course with five underperforming students at a high school that is in last place in the academic standings. Leading the group of five students is Yoo Seung-ho as a stubborn and rebellious troublemaker. The group is rounded out by (in order of the cast photo above) Lee Chan-ho, Ji-yeon, Go Ah-sung, and Lee Hyun-woo.

That’s a pretty solid young cast, not to mention the older generation featuring Bae Doo-na and Kim Su-ro.

Lee Chan-ho, Go Ah-sung, Lee Hyun-woo, Ji-yeon, Yoo Seung-ho

In addition to Yoo Seung-ho’s troublemaker, we have:

Go Ah-sung, 17. She was tagged as an up-and-comer to watch in the horror film The Host, and also had roles in Happy Life and Radio Days. Her character is a sincere and honest type who lacks perseverance.

Lee Hyun-woo has great charm and comic delivery, and at 16 years old, he has already had roles in numerous dramas like Queen Seon-deok, Return of Iljimae (he was Cha-dol), Great King Sejong, Lobbyist, and Legend. His character dreams of being an idol singer.

Meanwhile, Ji-yeon, 16, is probably most known for being in girl group T-ara, but she was also featured in horror drama Hon (Soul) earlier this year and did, I thought, a pretty good job; she seems to have a good affinity for the camera. Her character is peaceful and easygoing, though she lacks a sense of purpose.

Lee Chan-ho, 20, is the eldest of the bunch and appeared with Yoo Seung-ho, 16, in Fourth Period Murder Mystery, as well as the teen comedy film Our High School E.T.. His character is a timid type who doesn’t assert himself.

I’m a little less certain of the director (PD Yoo Hyun-ki) and writer (Yoon Kyung-ah), both of whom have mostly Drama City productions on their resumes. The writer’s two entries date back to 2003 and 2006. That doesn’t mean I think they’ll be bad, but that they are somewhat unknown entities. (I would say that being an adaptation of a Japanese drama gives them a leg up in terms of story material, but I’m sure we can all point to cases where that didn’t quite work out.)

God of Study will air on KBS Mondays and Tuesdays. Perhaps hoping to recreate Boys Before Flowers‘s youth appeal, it premieres almost exactly one year after it, on January 4.

chase555, relax dude. These actors are actually age appropriate for their roles unlike BOF where adults were hired to play high schoolers.

@47 Anneliese :

Many people are worried that as the original Dragon Zakura was a success, the remake might not be as good (I can understand). But that doesn't mean that the fact that it's a Japanese drama turned into a Korean remake will be like BOF.

BOF was not the first J-drama to be remade, and there have been excellent remakes in the past (one, which I can't remember the title, that I felt was much better than the original). The most recent one was The Man Who Can't Get Married, which was quite good. Let's just pray that K-Dragon Zakura will also be a success ^__^

@50 chase555:

How can they be too young!?
Age wise, they are perfect. And talent has nothing to do with age.

In your eyes they may look like a "12 year old", but in Korea, they look just their age that is right for the role. Even college students look like high schoolers and really young...

@47 NOOOO. YAMAKI FOREVERRR. :'(

but yeah, you're right, the great thing about yamapi is he always manages to have a ridiculous amount of chemistry with his female partner, even if he can't really ever show more than three emotions. the only reasons i'm reluctant about god of study are: one, yoo seungho's supposed to have a loveline with go ahsung and CALL ME SHALLOW BUT I CAN'T SEE IT WORKING T_T; two, i adored the jdrama and god of study is going to have to be pretty freaking amazing to not disappoint me.

"Many people are worried that as the original Dragon Zakura was a success, the remake might not be as good (I can understand)."

DZ has 3 major selling points:

1) Hard (and useful) lessons about studying and busting ass. There's no feel good lesson here, and there's no chaebol anything here. The Dragon Zakura manga ended up winning a Kodansha award, because the mangaka wanted to impart that lesson to the kid reading it. Grow up, take your lumps, and study hard.

2) Each of the students is troubled in a realistic and meaningful sort of way. Explaining why they weren't doing so hot at school (all the students here are supposed to be bottom feeders), and what this challenge ultimately means to them.

3) It's about the relationship between the teacher and student. Yes, there's a little romance in DZ but that's WAY, WAY besides the point. Yamapi/Masami maybe had some nice chemistry, but the primary relationship was really between Teacher Abe and his students.

So, in theory, this show should be nothing like BBF. Nothing. NO-THING. NOT A FRIGGING THING. It should be more like School series that ran in the beginning of the decade.

WOO HOO!!!!!! I LOVED the japanese version and i'm syched for the korean!!!!! They left out the other girl, but I guess Mizuno and Yoshino are really the two main girls. And they have that whole romantic link to Yusuke while the other was really just there to look cute. :)

ermm
i think they will lose to japan's version
because japan have that kind of feeling which is awesome
i mean like there is really humour and violence in there
that kind of tension even just by looking at the cast
here the cast seems like
i cant feel anything
they are all pretty and handsome
but something seems to be lacking
like QSD's mishill when leaving
i cant seem to get anything out of it then i quitted watching

I'm so used to seeing 20+ year old actors playing high school characters that its actually a bit unnerving to see younger actors taking their age-appropriate roles. Go Ah-sung looks like she's 12 and alarms go off when I see shes wearing such a short skirt.
