Lee Yo-won sings for special soundtrack
by javabeans
Actress Lee Yo-won, who played the title role in MBC’s Queen Seon-deok, is making her singing debut on a Special OST Part 2 for that drama with the track “Bi-dam” or “비담 (悲談).” (As you probably know, Bi-dam is the character played by Kim Nam-gil, (SPOILER?) with whom Deok-man shares an ultimately unfulfilled love. In addition, the hanja characters corresponding to the title “Bi-dam” also mean “sad story.”)
Lee Yo-won said, “I’m nervous and excited to be revealing my first song. It’s fortunate that the story of Deok-man and Bi-dam is a sad one, which allowed me to sing with plenty of emotion.” The song was composed by Park Sung-jin and the lyrics written by J, the latter of whom said, “It may be because she’s an actor, but she provided abundant emotion. Compared to established singers she may not be as strong technically, but she excelled in immersing herself into the feeling of the song.”
The digital single goes on sale today, December 28.

J was right, she's not strong technically. She can't carry a tune. I couldn't bring myself to finish the song. Lol.

I actually prefer feeling to technique and I enjoyed listening to this song. Tho' it sound like a young girl is singing.....not a woman.

I also think that her vocal is quite weak, but it must be an interesting experience for her trying to bring out all the emotions after living with her character for a long time.

her vocal is not that strong but as what the lyricist said that she provides the emotions needed for the song and i agree. while listening to the song i can feel the emotions she's trying to convey plus i can't help but reminisce the sad ending of queen seon deok - the unfulfilled love between bidam and deokman. =(

I love LYW and all but there's a reason why she's an actress.
Why can't J sing it instead? Her voice is amazing.

Let's just say she should stick to acting.
Some singers can turn actors, but not too many can do the other way around.

- Its ok. I think everyone really wants more Kim Nam Gil though.
" I have looked through all of the pictures of Kim Nam Gil, listened to his voice, his use of his voice, watched his facial expressions, and his acting style carefully.
It is almost eerie how very much he resembles the actor Johnny Depp. He could easily pass as Depp’s Asian brother with no problem at all. Their vocal pitches and cadences are similar. Their acting styles and facial expressions from humorous, to deadly serious, to lost, anguished, or contemplative are similar. Even their pictures of when they were in their late teens and early twenties are similar. Since Johnny Depp’s family originates from Kentucky, and he shows Iroquois native American blood in his appearance, I wonder if this has anything to do with how this is possible.
I doubt anyone in Asia has recognized this amazing coincidence or understands the potential for global appeal that Kim Nam Gil has.
If I were his agent I would definitely stake out for him the types of roles that made Johnny Depp famous, as well as have him practice English daily to go global. Definitely an action and romance movie actor for all of the genres of mystery, historical, paranormal/occult, fantasy/science fiction, and fast paced thrillers since he shows all of the same versatility that Depp has displayed.
I would look for the smart thinking, clever, highly intelligent character roles Depp is famous for and avoid all others no matter how appealing they would appear to be. A good romantic mystery would be the best follow up at this point for him in my opinion."
- Maybe they should have gotten Kim Nam Gil to sing for us.

@Angelica:
Actually, I don't think having Kim Nam Gil go global because he resembles JD is a good idea. People will think "Asian JD", "JD Wannabe", etc... since JD is more famous, most people will just look at KNG as a man who is trying too hard to be the second JD.
Especially if you're going to copy JD even to the point of looking "for the smart thinking, clever, highly intelligent character roles Depp is famous for ".
Kim Nam Gil should seriously not be promoted as the second JD.
I just want KNG to be KNG and JD to be JD.

Lee Yo Won should stick to acting. Singing aint her thing...

to be kind, she sounds like me trying to sing a ballad song at Karoke.....
I was cringing from the first note!
But who am I to say. She obviously got the okay to sing a song for the OST so maybe its just my ears.....

I think its meaningful that LYW is singing this love theme song as a tribute to QSD/Bidam sad love story in QSD. Its not bad being her first song.

@8 Angelica -
Actually, what Johnny Depp and Kim Nam Gil have most in common is an apparent willingness to take on roles that might appear to be unusual career moves.
And, BTW, JD is part Cherokee, not Iroquois.
I'm quite looking forward to see what KNG will do next. What with being a member of the AoBL and all. (and I'm still trying to find Modern Boy in region 1, I may have to go for region 2 with decent subs from Japan, though.)
As for the song....meh.

POOR BIDAM!!! :( :( :(
(Actually poor Lee Yo Won. I imagine she's still kinda in shock that the writers threw in the DM-BD love story at the end of the show. Now she has to sing for the relationship that wasn't the actual feature relationship of the show. :D Ah well . . . BIDAM I LOVE YOU!!! )
"Maybe they should have gotten Kim Nam Gil to sing for us."
Kim Nam Gil actually does sing a bit. He sings during his fanmeeting.

@johoo:
YES! WHY CAN'T J SING THIS?
J's voice IS packed filled with emotions...
I haven't heard this, but if you want a sad song sung nicely, I gotta hand it to Baek Ji Young. Her sad songs really make you feel like you're gonna die.
I could play 잊지 말아요 (Don't Forget - IRIS OST) a thousand times and still feel prickling in my nose.
I digress. XD

J singing?
No please.
That would defeat the whole purpose of the song...
Hell, it's called "Bidam" aka "Sad Story".
I think LYW has a real nice pure voice.
And her vocals are weak?
HELLO WORLD, she's an actress not some amazing-wow singer.

Awwww... how special. I actually very much appreciate Lee Yo Won's soft voice. It's almost like a thought that is not expressed out loud. I am very thankful that she sang it, because it allows the viewers/listeners to believe/feel that she is Deokman, thinking to herself...
Thank you Lee Yo Won and Kim Nam Gil. Love you two as a couple. Please act together in a love story again!!!

... I love LYW and all. Seriously. But my musical taste was weaned on and is composed of powerhouse belters, so, no. Brilliant for a first time effort though. I'm so reminiscing on the early eps right now.
... Now that i think about it, the acoustic nature of the arrangement lends itself well to her voice, you can tell it was tailor made for her. Its appropriately appropriate. :D

Heeey....she sounds great n georgeus in this song,.you guyz who judge as if she were so weak on singing, i dont think so,, remember this is a soundtract, not such a "korean idol" singing competition,.so what she brings in this song is her deeply heart n soul,, it's sweet n touchy n really represent the story of her role

It is natural that LYW should sing that song because she's the Queen Seondeok who fell in love with Bidam and that song was about her love for him. About LYW singing, well, she's not a singer but she surely has made us feel the sadness in her voice. And I think that's the most important & the message of the song.

Personallly speaking, i think it is only wise that Ms Lee Yo Won sang that song. It REALISTICALLY CONVEYS HER TRUE FEELINGS to Bi-Dam as Queen Seon Deok herself....for their unfulfilled, tragic love story. Hearing LYW's voice reminds me of those scenes when Dukman confessed her true feelings with him, the flower-giving-giddy moments, the concerned he expresses with her, until the time when both realized that they were both victims of circumstances, that it is too late for the Queen to save Bi-Dam...just as the song conveys, she was grateful for the love Bidam gave to her but she was regretful that it didnt have a happy ending, and thus she wishes that he would realize that she love him somehow and hoping that they will meet again in the next life....oh what a heart-wrenching film!!!

Technically speaking, she may not sound like a concert-queen singer, but she sung with utmost sincerity...and for a first-timer per se, i would say that she's good, really good. Two thumbs up to you, Ms Lee Yo Won!!! Kudos!!!

Just ran across this article accidentally and got curious about the song. The tune itself is not bad, and the singer isn't bad either for being inexperienced - in fact, I would prefer a singer who can sing on pitch with a pure tone than a singer who "scoops" around the pitch, abuses vibrato or cannot control vibrato. The former can develop a good vibrato and can even pull off bel canto style with a few voice lessons; the latter have a much harder time undoing what can be years of bad habits. I second the kudos for LYW and hope she chooses to sing more in the future.

i couldn't believe most people say she CAN'T sing! i mean..with all fairness to her..she is in tune..and just listen--what a sincere.. soft.. sweet voice.. so genuine and pure..(unlike those with overdone vocal acrobats)
Love it! Go Ms. Lee Yo-Won! Can't let them bring u down! :D
