Chuno boasts a solid supporting cast
by javabeans
Ahn Seok-hwan
Not only does Chuno have a pretty solid lead cast and crew, it’s beefing up its ranks with a strong supporting cast as well. For instance, there’s Ahn Seok-hwan (above), who’s a familiar face from dramas like Partner, Boys Before Flowers, Painter of the Wind, Spotlight, and Hong Gil Dong, among many others. In the drama, he plays an artist who loves to gossip and talk politics. He often seeks out Jang Hyuk‘s character Dae-gil, and earns his friendship when he paints a likeness of Hye-won (Lee Da-hae), whom Dae-gil loves.
The rest of the list includes the fabulous Kim Gab-soo, comic fixtures Lee Han-wi and Sung Dong-il, and actress Jo Mi-ryung. Actually, what’s interesting is that these are actors with a strong comedy bent, which makes me wonder if Chuno will have an unexpected comic angle, which we haven’t seen from the previous stills.
Sung Dong-il
Sung Dong-il, for instance, has been in dramas like Lawyers of Korea, New Heart, Don’t Hesitate, and Green Coach, but his biggest claim to fame was in the recent hit sports film Take Off, which did so well that it entered the Top 10 all-time box-office list. The film also got him an acting award at this year’s Chunsa Film Festival.
In Chuno, Sung Dong-il takes a departure from his well-known comic image with a villainous role. He’ll play “Joseon’s biggest roughneck” with a “sly but strong” character who promises to complicate matters for Joseon’s top slave hunter Dae-gil (Jang Hyuk).
Interestingly, the always-wonderful Kim Gab-soo has a role not only in Chuno but also in another sageuk that premieres the same week, Jejoongwon. (They aren’t ratings competitors, however, since Jejoongwon is a Monday-Tuesday show and Chuno follows on Wednesdays and Thursdays.) Kim has had memorable roles in IRIS, Hon, The World They Live In, and Tazza; here, he plays King Injo, who reigns during the first and second Manchu invasions. It’s his first time playing king.
Lee Han-wi
Lee Han-wi is another familiar face in comedies; some of his many recent projects include Job Well Done, Beethoven Virus, Coffee Prince, and 200 Pound Beauty. He was also in Take Off and also the recent Good Morning President.
In Chuno, he plays Jang Hyuk’s client who requests his services in tracking down slaves, and although he’s described as a hateable character, he also adds energy to the cast. (I suspect it’s more of a love-to-hate type character.)
Meanwhile, Jo Mi-ryung (I Love You, Ja Myung Go) plays a “sexy and comic” woman who has her eye on one of the men in the slave hunter group, played by Han Jung-soo (of dramas Painter of the Wind, King and I). Her attempts to win his favor lead to bright laughs.
Chuno premieres January 6.

I've seen Ahn Seok-hwan in a lot of dramas, starting with DGCH and a return appearance in My Girl. I think he brings credibility to a drama - i.e., "if he's in it, maybe I'll tune in..."

Yay! More stills! And I'm a huge fan of Ahn Seok-hwan, loved him in all the dramas I've seen him in...the fact that the supporting cast is so solid helps even out the burden/expectations on the main leads which I think is a good thing.
They really have been doing a good job getting viewers interested in Chuno by slowly giving out info about the drama over the past couple of weeks.

i think korea has so many great actors, who just being the supporting cast, the names above are a few among many...
where's Kim Gab Soo picture?? i want to see him as a king... anyone has his stills??
Ahn Seok Hwan never fail to entertain, even when the main actors/actresses do (cough-GHS-cough), i watched his interview when BOF aired, he was once played as a gay and that part is very memorable, well acording to the MC, coz it was more than 10 years ago i think...
can't wait for chuno... january 6?? please come sooner!!!!

Kim Ji Suk's character is also supposed to have a bit of a comic bent as a playboy.
But it'll be great to see Gong Hyung Jin and Sung Dong Il depart from their usual comedic roles.
Kim Gab Soo as Injo will certainly be a sight to see, and Ahn Suk Hwan is always entertaining.
@ Stylish
There's no chance the comedy will overshadow the dramatic storyline. This is Kwak Jung Hwan after all. ;)
And don't worry, it will be subbed. :)
