2009 MBC Drama Awards
by javabeans
December 30 was, once again, the night of the 2009 MBC Drama Awards. Unlike last year, there was no split Daesang award nor the ensuing controversy, but then again, there really was nobody with whom it could be shared. To absolutely nobody’s surprise, Go Hyun-jung was named Daesang winner for her delicious portrayal of Mi-shil in Queen Seon-deok, which had a monstrous night. Full awards list below.
There was a little bit of grumbling over MBC’s overuse of the dual award, but since the Daesang wasn’t shared, it seems to be less of an issue this time around.
At first, it seems a little ridiculous that the awards were dominated so decisively by the two Queen series — Queen Seon-deok and Queen of Housewives. But on further reflection, it may not be so surprising after all — MBC had a pretty bad year outside of those two. Many of its dramas were not successful ratings-wise, no matter how well they were produced, and they were too quick to cut down their few mania hits like Tamra the Island and Strike Love. Perhaps the big surprise is that there were absolutely no awards given to Friend, Our Legend. What gives, MBC?

Go Hyun-jung wins the Daesang! Congrats to her; nobody came close to winning it away from her.
I don’t think Kim Nam-joo was a serious contender against Go Hyun-jung, but if anyone else was going to be considered, she’d have to be on the shortlist for headlining Queen of Housewives. She looks lovely and regal.
Yoon Sang-hyun was also not going to win the Daesang, although I did read a few articles speculating at his chances. But his breakout role in Queen of Housewives was just that enjoyable, particularly paired with Kim Nam-joo.
Lee Yo-won was ostensibly the lead of Queen Seon-deok, but I think it’s fair that she took home a Top Excellence Award rather than the Daesang. (I do, however, hate how she’s styled herself; she has dulled down her looks with that hair and dress.)
I love Uhm Tae-woong in general, but I can’t help thinking his Top Excellence Award is more a factor of being swept up in the Queen Seon-deok fervor than anything.
Kim Nam-gil, on the other hand, really earned his Excellence Award for Queen Seon-deok. (I suppose he won Excellence and not Top Excellence, even though most people will probably agree that he was stronger than Uhm, because his role was not originally planned to be as big as it became. Due to the audience love for his character, he only came to the fore in the latter half.)
Lee Hye-young got an award playing a late-blooming ugly duckling in Queen of Housewives. Always the fashionista, Lee is one of the few attendees who popped with that burst of color.
Paired alongside Lee Hye-young in Queen of Housewives, Choi Chul-ho‘s outwardly stiff character gave him a chance to exercise his comic chops, and he was given an Excellence Award.
Go Na-eun is one of the rare winners who had nothing to do with either Queen show; she won for Assorted Gems. The white dress looks wonderful on her, and she positively glows.
Im Joo-eun, a newcomer winner for Hon, sorta fades into her neutral palette, but she looks young and fresh. She’s definitely on my radar as an actress to watch.
Yoo Seung-ho was given a newcomer award playing a young king in Queen Seon-deok…
…while his castmate Lee Seung-hyo took home the other newcomer award as Al-cheon in Queen Seon-deok.
Im Joo-hwan finally got his big break (though no award) with Tamra the Island. Inasmuch as I can see why the Seon-deok stars were nominated for newcomer awards and had higher profiles for being in a bigger drama, I really think Im deserved more credit for what he did in Tamra.
Im Joo-hwan’s Tamra co-star Seo Woo, on the other hand, was recognized with a newcomer award. I don’t really think that kind of shapeless dress works on someone so petite; short and structured would have played up her youthful charm more than this long black shift.
Nam Ji-hyun is quickly building up a resume playing memorable child parts for big stars; she won here for being young Deok-man in Queen Seon-deok (then went on to be Han Ye-seul’s childhood counterpart in Will It Snow For Christmas). She’s also growing up! I normally hate peeptoe boots, but she looks very cute wearing them — nice way of mixing softness and youth with a bit of an edge.
Ahn Gil-kang (Queen Seon-deok) and Na Young-hee (Queen of Housewives) were both winners:
Seo Young-hee was another Seon-deok winner. Loving that eggplant color on her.
As for Jang Geun-seok… well, it could have been worse? (Although the blue velvet jacket with black pants is just bad. He just looks uncomfortable.) I had to rack my brains to figure out why Jang was here at the MBC awards, since his big performance was in an SBS drama (and he hosts the SBS awards tomorrow). He did appear in an MBC series, Beethoven Virus, although that was part of last year’s awards cycle.
Likewise, Lee Yeon-hee‘s most recent MBC tie was in a drama awarded in last year’s ceremony, East of Eden, which ended earlier this year. She’s positively radiant. The short, flirty dress makes her look fresh and lively.
Part of me finds Min Hyo-rin‘s (Triple) electric-pink number a little glaring, but in close-ups she looks really cute. And I always appreciate a flash of color when most of the others opted for blacks, whites, and neutrals.
Seo Shin-ae (High Kick Through the Roof) is adorable. I love that she’s dressy and put-together without looking fussy. And she always looks so happy!
Don’t love the cut, shiny material, or big bow on Sunwoo Sun‘s (Queen of Housewives) gown, but somehow I think she pulls off the look. She’s wearing IT, rather than letting it wear her, and confidence always looks good.
On the other hand, my first thought at seeing Jeon No-min (Queen Seon-deok) in his sequiny jacket was, “Sparkle Motion!”
Comedian Lee Hwi-jae came with Seon-deok‘s Park Ye-jin:

I think Uhm Tae-Woong deserved Top Excellence. There’s only one way to portray a character with only three or four defining characteristics – Yushin is loyal, principled, rational and devoted to Lee Yo-Won’s character. That character has a very limited scope and UTW does it as well as anybody else could have done it. That doesn’t take anything away from KNG – who was excellent as Bidam -but Tae-Woong really does deserve Top Excellence.
And the real feature relationship of the show was between UTW and Lee Yo-Won. I think everyone was swept away by KNG’s performance as Bidam and the way he expresses his love for the leading lady that they ignore everything that occurs in the first fifty episodes of the drama. That being said some probably feel the chemistry between KNG and LYW was better (that really doesn’t mean there was no chemistry between UTW and LYW) but UTW has virtually no romantic scenes of any kind from episode 26 onwards – their feelings only crop up in some tense situation and that relationship I feel has much more depth and solidity and is not a usual romantic, sentimental attachment. Like LYW said, Bidam’s fans probably decided the award.
Anyway there were other pairs that were obviously more suited for the award but popularity awards I suppose are always given to what people like – not to what is the real, or the actual relationship of the shows.
