Weekend dramas stay strong
by javabeans
Smile, Three Brothers, Loving You a Thousand Times
It’s a good time to be a weekend drama: Saturdays and Sundays are home to a number of thriving dramas these days. Leading the pack is KBS’s family drama Three Brothers, which again surpassed the 30% mark this weekend. Following the highest-rated series of the year (Sons of Sol Pharmacy), it seems like it has found the right tone to carry a similar viewership.
But it’s not the only series with healthy broadcast numbers; over on SBS, both weekend dramas (Smile and Loving You a Thousand Times) are faring quite well.
Three Brothers
Three Brothers airs in the earlier hour, and although it occupies first place, relationship melodrama Loving You a Thousand Times (starring Lee Soo-kyung, Jung Kyeo-woon) isn’t far behind with its most recent episode bringing in 22.5% ratings. Unfortunately, such strong showings for those two means MBC is stuck with a low 6.5% for its Eugene-led family drama Creating Destiny.
In the later hour, the competition is closer, but for now Smile is sitting pretty in first place as the romance and laughs continue for its stars Lee Min-jung and Jung Kyung-ho. Its most recent episode pulled in a 17.6% and its performance has been deemed strong enough to merit a 16-episode extension. (And I can tell by the reactions of guest recappers soyjoy and dw4p and from the comments by readers on this site that the show is certainly connecting with fans.)
Meanwhile, MBC’s Assorted Gems is performing solidly with a 15.6%. Even the car-dealership-set, manhwa-adapted drama Hot Blooded Salesman, which stars Chae Jung-ahn and Park Hae-jin, isn’t doing too badly with a consistent, mania-level performance in the 9%-10% range.
Now, if only there weren’t so many of them and they weren’t so long, I might have the time to keep up with them…!

At the moment I'm religiously following Loving You a Thousand Times and Creating Destiny. The former has kept me on the edge of my seat every episode and made me tear up during certain scenes, while the latter has a more cheerful tone. I dropped Smile You at episode 4 because I didn't like it much, but maybe I should pick it back up since people are raving about it so much.

Assorted Gems and LYATT are excellent dramas -I must say!
Assorted Gems has a flawless script, and each episode is consistent , the family is adorable, pitiable and at times hateable (which points out dramatic concepts) which completely makes it very fun and addictive to watch!
LYATT is non other than another makjang addiction...needless to say it has flaws but it's extremely memorable and watchable.
Both are the only 2 dramas I watch asap.
I havent watched Smile or KBS's 3 Bros, their plots or casting don't intrigue me at all for some reason =( Creating Destiny seems fun BUT It's soooo Draggy, You'll shout @ ur screen yelling to the main couple to fall in love already =( But I'll still watch it as it's lighthearted!

HAPPY MONDAY!!!
Love Creating Destiny.
The english is a little rough, but cute and the main couple are so adorable. Still wishing for the sister and the best friend to end up together, really like them.
Anybody have any recomendations for other dramas to pick up.
Really need to look at other things to keep my fix going.

smile, you is AWESOME!!:D
it's the usual cutesy romance drama, but it has this fresh tone to it that makes it really refreshing to watch. plus all the actors/actresses are playing their roles quite nicely. there isn't a single one person who's ruining it.

I am religiously watching "Smile, You" and I tried to watch "Creating Destiny" but it just fell by the wayside. I'll try it again soon. And I've always wanted to catch "Assorted Gems" hmmm. what's with me and long dramas lately?

Hm..I've been keeping up with Smile, You & Creating Destiny (in addition to You're Beautiful, of course!!), but I think I'll pick up the other 2 as well since the ratings seem so strong! If I get hooked on any additional dramas...I think I'll barely have enough time in my week anymore!! Haha, but still I love watching!

Currently m quite addicted to "Smile You" and it is so simple that it makes you smile...M simply loving the situation where the actors don't hesitate to love or express their feelings once they sort it out and not hiding feelings fearing that the other loves someone else but taking courage to giving a chance to the feelings you have..

@3 I'm following several weekend dramas, and as far as i can tell Smile You is the best of the crop, and very addictive as well, more than You're Beautiful and that's high praise in my opinion. It doesn't shine from the first episodes, but the episodes keep getting better and better so hang in there it pays up in spades.

@otk:
I know, right? I find LYATT addictive, that I can't wait to see what happens next each time. Even my sister who used to find JGW unattractive got hooked on the drama and loving him in it.
I'm interested to watch Assorted Gems too but it's not subbed, and I really hate watching dramas online. The only time I did that was with SBS Family Honor, also a 50 episode weekend drama. But it was worth it. To me it's the best family drama I've ever seen.

I am so glad to hear Smile You is doing well. I haven't enjoyed a drama this much in a long time. My very first long drama and what a initiation it has been. But I am still wary of watching other long dramas because I might get hooked and I have no time!

I am following only Smile you because of the 2 main leads. They are so real, so cute and adorable together. Iris is another drama and it's worth watching.
Not following typical long tedious Kdrama like LYTT.
About Creating destiny, I like Eugene but not the guy who is only a turn-off for me whenever he is on screen. I have the same feeling about the butler in My fair lady. Just look at them on screen, I only want to skip it. Some thing weird about their acting. Ji Sung & Eugene are great together since he is such a great actor.
Lee Min-jung and Jung Kyung-ho in Smile You are so cute and they should be the best couple for 2009.

I love Assorted Gems (I'm quite addicted to it, and I got a friend addicted to it as well--he keeps asking me when its going to be subbed, like I have the answer). I think its so underrated which is sad. :(
I also watch LY1000x though I'm not as addicted to it as I am to AG. I like watching it week after week, but its not amazing.
@10: You can download the AG episodes from aja-aja and they have the viikii subs there as well so you can download those and use them as softsubs...

I am totally addicted to Smile!!! I really like Loving You a Thousand Times too but the episodes now are the typical drama plot so my love for it is faltering a bit (it's still great though!) I'm watching Creating Destiny also but just for the hell of it, it's honestly not that great but enjoyable i guess...gets annoying sometimes =P. I love weekend dramas but Smile is definitely the best, every time I watch it i can't help but smile =D

I will also say Smile, You is love...Creating Destiny is not as adorable as Smile but still a good drama.. LYATT is our typical tear bringing K-drama...
To be honest I'm glad to see that there are some good k-drama that is being produced at the end of this year.... Hope to see this continue in the year 2010...
Because for me at least there were only couple of good drama that got my intention at the beginning of this year.

I'm hooked on Creating Destiny because the story really appeals to me and the casts are actors I've liked in other dramas prior. I wasn't sure about Smile, You specifically because of the casts - but with your recaps, I might have to start watching in the new year..

Glad to hear weekends are exciting in Korea! I love Smile, You almost as I love YAB!
I tried to watch LYTT as I really liked JKW in Hateful but once again, but I just couldn't take all the melodrama, and, it's a long series...but, I think it will be a good one to catch once in a while to see how it's doing, as it seemed to be moving pretty slow...
Heard a lot about Assorted Gems, but like JB, I just don't know about following all those lengthy series...I think Smile, You will be it for me...for now...
Ah, can't wait for JGS's next project, even if it's 120 episodes, I think it will be enjoyable! (But I really hope it won't be such a long one) :-)

For me it's fun to watch a drama like LYATT while waiting for the fluffy light ones like YAB :) and Creating Destiny (and maybe Smile, if I ever continue). Not to mention I started LYATT while watching MFL which I thought was fun too but ended up a disaster!
I think I'm going to try AG now that it's also highly recommended!

I'm only watching Smile, and i don't know who it doesn't have ratings like in the 20s, seriously! It is amazingly funny and charming...almost as Sons of Sol Pharmacy. Hmm I'm surprised 3 Brothers is doing good the preview looked bleh too me...any insight anyone?

...i watch "assorted gems" first...i love the 2 lead actors, they look sooo good together + the family interactions!!!
...next, i follow through w/ "smile, you"...i love the love-story of hyun soo & jung in the most & the last few episodes have made me more & more interested (next to YAB, of course!)
...i watch "creating destiny", just because of eugene & to fill up the days before YAB subtitles are available...
....stopped watching LYATT & Hot Blood after their 2nd episodes, though...
....i'll give "3 Brothers" a try...maybe after YAB finishes...
By & large, the weekend dramas have been improving...since "my precious child" on to "my too perfect sons"....i never liked looong series before but "glory of the family"(w/c i loved!!) changed all that!!!

The only drama I haven't checked out is 3 Brothers. Other than that, most of the weekend dramas seem to have mediocre chemistry, acting, or story.
Creating Destiny - I faithfully watched the entire 1st episodes and immediately knew this drama was not going to break the mold in acting, chemistry, or writing. But being relatively intrigued by a drama that has almost all the family members wanting a union between the leads, and right from the beginning, I may just skim the rest. Plus I like Eugene. Just the chemistry and character transitioning of the lead characters are lacking.
Assorted Gems - I have tried THREE times to finish the 1st episode, but could not do so. Unfortunately for me, I'm huge on character embodiment and chemistry. If it takes that long for me to get interested that means I'm just not feeling it.
Hot Blood - I think this drama may have more acting merits than writing. I definitely saw some nice charisma onscreen, but I wasn't feeling it the day I tested out this series (too hooked with good, comedic, fluffy dramas at the time).
Loving You 1000x - I'll be honest, I like the main actress, ever since the drama Soulmate. She and Lee Si Young were my draws for this drama, but I have been rather disappointed. The chemistry and relationship devo of the lead pairing took about 10 eps to get in tune, and even then it was not stellar. Rather I was more intrigued and impressed with the older brother, his wife, and Lee Si Young's storyline. But alas, this drama is too over-the-top melodramatic for me to endure anymore. I had to cut it off.
Smile, You - It doesn't take me long to know if I'll like a drama, and it takes me even less time to know if I'll love a pairing - b/c I get this butterfly sensation in my stomach when I can feel (not just see) instant and cosmic chemistry between two actors. It seems SY to has the most refreshing and chemistry-filled pairing so far - LMJ & JKH completely carry the drama. It's not perfectly written (I have yet to discover a drama that is), BUT I love the fact that it gets better instead of worse.
I don't know how many times I've loved the beginning of a Kdrama, then it slowly goes downhill from there. I attribute my frustrations of this occuring so often to the simultaneous "live" filming and broadcasting. I like my dramas to start, proceed, and end with conviction - whether or not its the way I envision or like the story to be presented. As long as the production sticks to its ideas at least I'll give them the credit for following through. I am not impressed with productions that try to cater to audiences in order to gain rating success and causing quality to deteriorate. Sometimes viewers don't know what they really want, so productions, stick to your guns and draw your own conclusions.

i tried watching creating destine but i just could not get hooked. i can stop watching it at any time and im the type of person that has to finish the ep before i go to slepp or do some thing else (its literally like ocd).
for smile, you i am soo hooked waiting the whole week for the next episode and thinking of my own fantasy way as to how the next episode will go. i have watched many dramas but nothing as good as this. it is the old riches to rags story line but this is different there is more to it.
for all those people who have dropped it, haven't seen it or debating on whether to watch it or not you really should. this is a really good drama i guaranty that you will not regret it (unless you do not like comedy or romance dramas)

I am loving smile, you right now. It is definitely somewhat a cutesy romance drama but what makes it good is that all the actors are doing well especially the leads and each episode gets better than the previous one which is always goo. The leads definitely carry the drama and are probably the main attraction to the show. Don't get me wrong the other actors are doing well as well but JMJ and JKH make two characters that would usually be frustrating and annoying absolutely adorable and how they have shown their relationship progress has been probably one of the more honest and natural progression I have seen in the lead couple. Rather than trying to force the coupling early on, Smile is honest about first loves and the transition from friends to bf/gf by tackling those issues head on. Episodes 17 an 18 have been the best so far.

At first I didn't watch Smile, but when I tried some episodes I was totally attracted by it, Now I wait all week long for new episodes and eng sub on Viikii.
I like Assorted Gems too, I watch LY 1000x but not because of the two main part but the elder brother and his wife, Mistress story. however since he become such a REALLY bad husband, I dropped it, I am used to thinking that a husband should love his wife.
I think i will try 3 brothers, if it is as good as sol pharmacist's sons, it's worth watching.

I had to reread two times to make sure I got it right. Extended by SIXTEEN episodes?! That's like....enough episode to start a new mini-series already. When a series is so long, it gives ample time for plot development, as well as melodrama dragginess, which I dislike (I'd rather turn to HK dramas for these).
Aniwaes, I'm not surprised that Creating Destiny's not pulling in high-ratings (though I'm surprise it's lower than Yb but yet has a longer run). It's really draggy and although Eugene's the supposed lead, for the most of eps 6 to 12, we don't see her much. Too much screen time was given to the elders in the house and the side-plot for Yeo Jun's sister. Maybe the number of episodes gives the writers room to develop a more complete picture of Eugene and Yeo Jun's family, but it's distracting. And they keep having Yeo Jun's grandmother scolding the young ones for being rude to the elders (by not abiding by their wishes?! Is that a cultural thing to obey the elders no matter how ridiculous they are?). Honestly, I'm watching it for the sake of completing the story. There's no hook to it and it's something I don't HAVE to catch right after the broadcast. Well, in episode 13 and 14 Eugene and Yeo Jun gets more screentime and they finally advance a little. I hope this trend continues!
