You’re Beautiful gears up for its premiere
by javabeans
Who’s ready for SBS’s new drama You’re Beautiful? With Swallow the Sun now over, the Jang Geun-seok–Park Shin-hye trendy series takes up residence on Wednesdays and Thursdays starting this week.
I have to say that despite some misgivings, I’m looking forward to it. When the drama was first announced, I was excited because I have always enjoyed the goofball charm of the Hong sisters writing team. That waned a bit when I saw the first stills of Jang Geun-seok’s weirdly shellacked helmet of hair and Park Shin-hye’s crossdressing look (which was still way too feminine to be convincing). But now that the airdate is approaching and I’ve seen the marvelously absurd preview (watch below), I feel my anticipating returning.
Based on the lengthy preview, I think what may end up being this drama’s advantage is that it knows what it is — a big goof. Not only is it a drama about idol stars, it’s actually aiming for an idol-world sense of froofy, sparkly, fantastically frivolous shenanigans. It’s not at ALL going for realism; at best, maybe surrealism. It’s like a kdrama version of a Disney teen romance. (Which isn’t an insult; I am a total SUCKER for Disney teen romance!)
The reason I feel that a drama like My Fair Lady falters is because it doesn’t know what tone to strike, and takes a straight approach when it should be zany, or goes too serious when it should be light, and vice versa. But the Hong sisters know their strengths, and they don’t try for unnecessary gravity; they’re always out to score a laugh and you can sense that aggressively silly tone in the preview.
I still contend that Park Shin-hye looks way too feminine to pass for a boy — her voice is so obviously female — which is something I may just have to ignore. Yoon Eun-hye’s appearance in Coffee Prince was enhanced by her boyish mannerisms and masculine way of talking, but the whole point of Park Shin-hye’s Mi-nyeo character is that she is very much a girl, and one who has to force herself to act like a boy. It makes sense that she would act feminine while trying to pass herself off as Mi-nam, but the problem is that then it becomes ridiculous to believe that anyone would buy her as a boy.
Still, those shots of not one but all of Mi-nyeo’s bandmates sensing an unexpected attraction to her look deliciously uncomfortable.
Also, Jung Chan!!!!
Jung Chan — Lovers, Auction House — is seriously underrated, and I love him. He’s manly and charismatic, and can hit a sardonic tone just as well as he can hit an emotionally intense one. Thank goodness, since he’ll give old fogeys like me something to gawk at instead of feeling pervy ogling teenage boys. Looks like he’ll be taking a role as management.

I like the wacked out vibe its giving off but if it turns out to be one of those things where ALL the guys end up liking the one girl because she's a girl? Then not so much for me, we'll see...

Park Shin Hye does look too much like a girl. how can anyone be convinced that she's a guy? Her voice is also too feminine! I'm not sure about this drama

I hated Japanese Hana Kimi with a passion so hope this isn't too much like it - it really gives off a similar vibe.
Still, I love PSH and the Hong Sisters, so will give this a try. It can't possibly be worse than the mess that is My Fair Lady.

it's one crazy kdrama. I'll definitely watch it. I think it will be diff from Coffee Prince (i hope), Hana Kimi and BBF.
I also watched the mini concert and i think JGS has a good heart. When he noticed that the 2 other casts that belongs to boy bands got more cheers than him, he just smiles and let them talk to the fans. though i did not understand the words but i think the fans listened to the blond guy (sorry forgot his name) more than JGS
You're right JV, PSH's voice is way too feminine =)

It looks so fluffy! I like :)
I just hope there isn't too much angst. I hate it when fluffy dramas become too angsty dramas and vice versa.
I so agree with your view on MFL.

"JGS’s yucky hairstyle doesn’t look as horrible in trailor. it looks less greasy.
and love the song at the end of the trailer! JGS has such a sexy voice!"
Agreed and agreed! You're a Greasy Fairy is officially back on my to-watch list (actually, it never left, but its impossible not to mock the stylings and posters we've seen so far).
JGS, with eyeliner, and flexing his sexy voice in songs, I'm there!! He's just a heavyweight actor for his baby boy generation (comparing apples to apples), so I know he'll hit all the right notes when called upon. And this time, he's not going up against Kang Ji-hwan and/or Kim Myung-min, so we'll see just what he's made of. And I'm actually liking Park Shin-hye, and I didn't like her before. Previews are so cute.
My one hope - PLEASE change JGS's hairstyle after a few episodes, please, please!

"I sincerely hope the main couple will not be the girl with the long haired guy, holy cow is he creepy and fem. Short haired guy ftw"
If you mean by "long haired guy" the one with guyliner and a greasy, plastered on slick do and wearing a series of pretty horrifically feminine shirts, then that's Jang Geun-soek, and I'm sorry to inform you, but unless the Hong sisters take a giant detour in drama land, he's the one who's gonna get the girl. He kinda is due, actually, what with losing the girl (and sometimes losing his life) in all his previous dramas.
However, the short-haired guy, the one who from the previews figures out PSH is a girl, I think he's actually quite cute and less froofy than the rest. I'm hoping for super angtsy love triangle done right! I think if you watch, JGS acting on screen won't be as creepy and fem as the stills look, he has a great voice and rather compelling screen presence.

Even though I'm in nursing school and I won't have time to sleep, let alone watch tv, I KNOW I'll be cutting back on my study time to watch this! Jang Geun Suk + Hongki??? Drool...... They're the true 꽃남s!

At first I was a lil skeptical of this drama and JGS's hair seriously detracted me. Park Shin Hye still looks too feminine to me.
Judging from the photos....does that mean F.T Island will make a cameo appearance?? hehe
I think the teaser is what sorta convinced me to give it a try.

Wow this certainly looks hilarious. I'm not buying it either [that the band mates can't see she's a gal], but it just looks like total fun. This was on youtube? the quality is really good. I love the little dance sequence scene with the manager (i think). Antyways, can't wait till it's out and about, looking forward to this show.

"it’s like watching a live action gender-bender male harem manga,
in which the leading lady IS SO OBVIOUSLY a girl,"
Yup, this actually looks like a Korean version of Hana Kimi meets Oppa Band. Starring Julie Andrews from the Sound of Music.
And by the looks of it, this may end up Hana Kimi *done right* (Didn't like the J-drama version.) You got female heroine entering Magic School of Bishis. You got Greasy Hair Guy. You got female character dressed as the Ultimate Johnny Boy. You got Oppa Band. You got Sorry Sorry Instructional Video.
All that's missing is some kind of "Nobuta Powa / Hallelujah Chance." Then this will officially be the greatest K-drama in the history of J-drama.

Yeah, after a period of emptyness I am looking forward to see this, but only because of JGS. NOTHING can spoil him- nor the greasy hair, nor the feminine balmain-style clothes, he is just such a pretty creature , who cares- boy or girl?
And I LOVE his voice!!!
I also hope he will develop into a good actor after finishing this flower boy thing.

The posters and storyline did not sell me on this drama until I saw the trailer. JB, thank you for posting it. I think I'm going to be watching it now. And JGS is definitely looking good even though his style can be unnerving sometimes.

ha ha ha! tremendously funny comment.... but seriously... love JGS to pieces but that annoying hair, the guyliner and the horrific feminine low cut shirts makes me think of a bipolar emo in drag......which one will i be today??? oh why not just wear it all at the same time....
i hope his look changes after a few episodes (can it be super, duper few!) Please!!

I am sooo looking forward to this drama. I like the third guy's look (the one that isn't Hongki or Geun Suk, was his name Yong Hwa?), but I've never seen him before. Is he a new actor?
I HAD to LOL at the "sorry, sorry" dance part.
Add another member to the "hate JGS's hair" club. He would look so pretty if it was more natural looking...

After watching the trailer, I am DEFINITELY going to watch this drama. I ROFL on many parts of the trailer from it's over the top ridiculousness yet has a charm of romance about it. The story does seem like Hanakimi-ish like many say or other gender bending mangas for that matter. Haha all bandmates start liking her. Hong-ki is so cute and not liking JGS's hair style much either but I'm sure his acting will be great. Can't wait until it's subbed. Hong Sisters have such colorful imaginations
