I feel the same way! When he flashed that one great big smile back at PSH after they made it back to the production company, I was like, WOW, he looks SO DIFFERENT when he smiles! Still handsome of course, but instead of the cold snobby vibes he usually gives out, his smile makes you all warm & fuzzy and giggly...... Gotta LOVE JGS & YAB!!! IRIS? ......Ummm, no thanks.

I have never been this obsessed about a show - i never understood why people would watch raw (no subs) episodes because "whats the use". But YB has totally turned me into a giddy teenager (and i am way pass those years)!

Love them all. I never knew how wonderful it would be to see a show that is so well cast. Others had one or two draw factors (or maybe 3)... but here - they are all so fabulous... and with a great script... no boredom here.... even rewatching some episodes!!

Well - just wanted to put in a comment because it is just not fair to be this obsessed and this grateful for the amazing weekly distraction from real life and not give the YB team some support.

SO... YB - fighting!! Love you guys. Hope the momentum picks and the show gets extended (praying + wishing) everyday!!

YB is one of the latest drama that i loved so much...

There are scenes resembling other dramas(which is common), but i do not mind.. It's the actors/actresses level of acting that i'm more concern, can they do what is required?

All the actors/actresses in this drama is fantastic.... Even Yong Hwa did well as a newcomer. Every episode is funny and release stress that we encountered in school or at work..

Yes, Etude house benefited from it... the 3 spokesperson(Park Shin Hye & Lee Min Ho and Jang Geun Suk-previous spokesperson) are so hot!!!! They are the young fans idols......

I like BOF till episode 15 only, after that it's all crap and lousy script,.. I hope You're Beautiful will have reasonable and smooth flow of the script...

I will definitely purchase the DVD when it is release..

You're Beautiful is a breathe of fresh air. I haven't been so obsessive and addicted to a show since Nobuta. That's speculating what will happen next and actually go check out forums for other fans reactions and watching the next sub episode ASAP.

My selection process to watch a drama is to go for rom-com or once in a while a high rated melodrama which I like the sound of. Some melodrama can be enjoyable to watch, so I would base my selection on ratings. I don't speak Korean, so I rely on reviews and ratings as it can give a gauge is the drama is worth watching. As long as the ratings stay constant and doesn't slip it's worth considering to watch.

Going through the synopsis for airing and upcoming dramas and my, this season only YB caught my eye. Oh my, this is right up my street. Cross dressing and idol group, this has to be hilarious. The fangirl in me loves a bit of shoujo and eyecandy. (Being in my mid 20s I should be over that... but oh well, I'm a sucker for pretty boys and romcoms) Tick I am so watching this. When I saw IRIS i thought same old action/thriller not that interested.

The poster is very shoujo/dream like and fits the purpose of the story. I wanted to check out the actors, I have to say on drama wiki, that photo of JGS does him no justice (can someone please change it?!), I rmbed, oh I pondered on the thought of watching Beethoven Virus but the is no real eyecandy. A pretty boy does draw me into a drama, but great story and acting keeps me watching. The promo pics on soompi gave a better impression, but I did think the lead male is not as good looking as the supporting males. The trailer sealed it for me and is definitely worth watching.

I have to say, I am now a JGS fan. This guy oozes charisma. His acting is great and he has a really nice deep voice. I am won over by him. As JB said said before JGS killing it and I agree with you 100%.

As for IRIS, I only watched it after reading on this blog the hype and the production cost of the drama. I thought, is worth checking out. Watched the first 2 episode, it's entertaining to watch but not as compelling and interesting to watch as YB. Hong sisters know how to push the right emotional buttons and the actors deliver it brilliantly.

So for me YB wins hands down. The ratings as first seems disappointing as first but they are holding up. I'm glad to hear it's a mania drama and is receiving lots of love.

and I have to say JDrama which are manga like, most of the time gives out a cringey unnatural feel. YB has some funny cringe moments, but doesnt have that I can't watch this anymore unnatural feel. The whole storyline is unbelievable yet fun and interesting. The actors and direction of the drama makes it believable in that situation and very addictive to watch!

kesperida--I didn't want to criticize about YB drama that's why I don't give more detailed, just wanted to comment about the rating issue which this article is about. I used to watch YB the first 2 episodes but later on I can't stand the acting and the storyline. It's too childish and comic-liked. And maybe this was the reason of the low rating of this drama. The target audiences are too niche(small).
I'm in the early 20 ages and I love ROM-COM but I gave up on this drama. Just my opinion, the audiences of this drama might be below 20 ages?
So 8 % is the appropriated rating for this drama for wed-thurs timeslot.(Usually most of wed-thurs drama wouldn't get a high rating more than 20. The good one will gain about 12-19 only, except IRIS)

I'm more of the older viewer and have been watching both IRIS and YB online here in the states. IRIS is definitely interesting but YB is much more enjoyable to watch. Though the main characters are much more older than myself, they somehow managed to get into my heart and have fallen for them. I ended up tuning in more to YB and and have been looking forward to each upcoming episode with so much excitement. The ratings definitely don't do this drama justice!

I believe YB is the best drama I have ever seen. And that's saying a lot because I have seen so many, from korean, to japanese. The script, the cast, and the funny moments, even how the relationships gradually take form are just so perfectly blended. Hope the ratings will end up higher :) and soon. It deserves so much more.

I used to watch a lot of J-dramas before I became a fan of K-drama. J-dramas still rely a lot on SMAP members - Kimura, and the stars at those age. But they lacked those up and coming young actors and actresses like JGS, PSH and YEH. I notice one or two more promising actor/actress in the recent dramas/movies but on a whole, those new idols are not eye-catching enough. I just wonder where all the handsome boys and beautiful girls have gone in Japan.

But J-drama is good that it has a faster pace. I like Nodame Cantabile, Hotaru no Hikari and Bara no Nai Hanaya in the recent years. Nodme Cantabile's female lead, Ueno Juri, is not very beautiful but she is really good in acting. She is also good in a later drama "Last Friends" but I do not like that story. Takeuchi Yuko (in Bara no Nai Hanaya) is also a good actress and has a lovely face. I like some of her old dramas and movies.

I think Kimura's "Mr Brain" should be nice to watch. But I just don't have the interest to start watching it because you would know how Kimura plays out his roles....his acting and facial expressions are more or less the same in all his dramas.... Just like LBH lah. And that's why I do not start watching IRIS. And I can still remember Miss KTH's poor acting in her last few dramas.... All I can remember is her fierce stares .....I do not want to suffer again.....

Maybe I like YB more as compared to other K-dramas because it has a pace similar to a J-drama. The cast has lived up to expectation and has played the roles well. There are scenes which are unexpected in each episode to make you laugh and cry. So that's why you are yearning to know what will happen in the next episode lor. Hong sisters keep me hooked.....

I only watched a few Taiwanese dramas. Taiwanese idols tended to overact and the drama is a bit too long for my taste.

On a whole, I like K-dramas more in recent years while some J-dramas are still good and worth watching.

Yeah i agree with belleza (#41), that the poster did catch my attention in a very good way when it first came out. It's so reminiscent of taiwanese idol dramas. It totally screamed "you're in for one totally Wacky ride". Plus, i took the poster/ drama to be as a satiric jab at idol dramas (i.e. BBF) with cliches overflowing albeit well pulled off. Those factors, coupled with the wacky - potential sounding synopsis, won me over. Agreed that the poster was perhaps cringe-worthy, and that did make me hesitate a little as to whether my judgement would prove me wrong. but you're beautiful removed my doubts with its excellent castings, strong script, wonderful directing. and it beats taiwanese idol dramas hands down.

Funny how people mention Jo In Sung in the same breath with JGS. When I watched Beethoven virus I could picture a younger JIS doing that role. I do find that JGS's acting in YB is much better than anything he has done previously and there are parts where I feel like he is channeling Kang Mae's arrogance and OCD like behavior in his TY role. I'm sure JGS learned and picked up a lot from the maestro of acting.

Surprisingly I have not taken notice of JGS previously except as a cute face until YB. After YB, this noona loves me some JGS ("noona noona song in the background and doing the Go Mi Nam fake bite"). Its the boyish smile, fierce stylish look, charisma, contradictory manly voice to the pretty boy face and packaged with great acting.

Plus I have an irrational desire to put on eyeliner every time I see him in YB. anybody else? anybody?

I wonder if the Noonas have deserted Jang Geun-soek in this outing because he's paired with a girl his age? Or perhaps all the noonas have returned to their first love, Lee Byung-hun. ;=) I sure hope not, I'm totally his noona and I love this age-appropriate story and pairing.

JGS's pairing, from Ha Ji-won, to Sung Yu-ri, to Lee Ji-ah, have all rated good to okay, but he's always been the second fiddle. He definitely has leading man gravitas and chops, I'm just going to stop fretting about the ratings and know that everyone on YB is gonna come out doing great with their career. YB is a career builder.

As for JGS as baby Jo In-sung, they're like blood brothers! Totally incongruous sense of style in real life - check. Adorable smile - check. Leading man height and built - check. Acts primarily against older leading ladies - check.

Now imagine the last scene in Ep.8 as acted by JIS: leading against the wall, losing it, sobbing, kneels down, fist in mouth, ^*&^*(&*(*)$#@!, rages towards the sky! Man, I love YB.

I didnot watch Beethoven Virus (due to a certain female character) so I can't comment but when I watched Hong Gil Dong, his acting was good but I was ignoring him the whole time - the eyeliner there (and KJH) did distract me a bit (errr, a lot)

creamth, I'm not rude, I just can't stand your judgement on YB like "8% is appropriate rating for this drama". Even though you have your own opinion, you shouldn't tell like this. Actually, high or low rating doesn't mean drama good or poor.

Recently I became a fan of JGS and PSH because of YB, this drama is very entertaining. People all over the world love YB and going to be crazy for waiting 2 episodes per week. It's so obvious that YB is very addicted and great drama of 2009.

Though I don't care any rating, I still want YB get higher (highest if possible) rating. I want to encourage YB and all cast (especially JGS since he feel upset local rating). Hope he knows that YB has loads of international fans all over the world.
Anyway, YB rating is already 10% and over, it will get higher rating soon.

I had to laugh when I read this comment, because I was reminded of when I stumbled upon "One Pound Gospel," the Jdrama that features Kazuya Kamenashi as a boxer (and, oddly enough, a nun as the heroine!). He was supposed to be battling a weight problem, but the first time I saw his scrawny, shrunken chest and stick-like arms with these boxing gloves that loooked like bowling balls at the end of his arms I couldn't help it, I just burst out laughing. So I stayed far away from the Kim Bum version - I didn't want to be that mean again.

YAB wins over IRIS for me too, but like belleza said, its about who controls the remote. Couldn't imagine watching a show on my weeny phone here in the UK but as far as Korean teens go, well, if their phones are capable why wouldn't they rather do that a time of their convenience? Not fair to bash IRIS so much, though. I was excited about IRIS but it kinda disappeared. The thing about YAB is that it always surprises you. No one can be sure about the parentage situation, or whether or not the real Mi Nam will make an appearance. You have theories but they could go any and every way, and that's what keeps it fresh and fun. An ep of YAB seems to last longer and be fuller and more satisfying than an ep of tons of other dramas I've seen. Plus the acting is brilliant by most, the actors fit their roles to a T and bring heart and emotion, stop it from going too OTT or annoyingly silly, countles LOL moments in every episode, adorable romance. It ticks tons more boxes than your average drama and creates a few many of those other dramas don't have.

Still, IRIS has hot kisses. YAB, we are waiting!

Too funny. I'm in hysterics with that imagery but horrified as well. I think JIS as much eye candy as he is a terrible actor. His performance in Frozen Flower left me pretty frozen.

BTW besides the eye liner thing, I have also been obsessing about buying some distressed ripped up skinny black jeans. Did I catch some kind of Samsookie's binnie virus when I was staving off the flu? Am I going to have TK's pompadour hair soon. How will I go into work looking like this?

Thanks, JB, for posting this news story. I am anticipating the longer article you have promised to post. I hope the relevant media in Korea is actively pointing out that YB holding steady at 10% is indicative of its pull, despite being paired against IRIS.

What I like about YB is its whimsy. It captures -- through all the characters, including the adorable UEE (I don't know how to spell her name -- UAE?) -- the flight-full magic of first loves. By exaggerating innocence, the lack of self awareness, the egotistical-but-warm-heart, and the camaraderie the writers really are capturing a coming-of-story that is fairytale-like. We cannot help but be transported! That's the pull of fairy tales.

I love that some of the best scenes so far -- the ones in ep 7 -- happened in the countryside, in a non-rock and roll atmosphere, in a place where one can still gaze with wonder at the stars and the moon. I think it makes us feel "young" (innocent and anticipatory) which is the beauty of the drama.

The manager, the stylist, the president, the nun, and even the dancing sidekicks are all such lovely people.

TK's character is so fantastic. It's like the Hong sisters know him inside out and give him, as a result, a multitude of ways to express all the various sides to him. His lousy sense of direction coupled with his wonderful sense of music is just such a perfect contradictory coupling. JGS is perfectly cast! What a powerful actor -- I think his future is now set.

I love this drama so much. Watching it is like sitting down with a good book, in a familiar comfy armchair, a purring cat on your lap, and, most importantly, the real world receding to nothing.

I agree with others that the promotion of YB was really lousy. The posters, with the glitter, clouds, strange emo-looks, and boy-band-rock band look all made YB out to be some kind of eight-year old girl's diary entry ("Dear Diary, I want a pony. A pink pony"). Even JB's original intros to the drama left me uninterested. I only got excited after watching the trailer -- but even then, it spoke to the manga-fan/otaku in me! By tailoring it this precisely to such a specific audience, the promoters really messed up.

Yeah, I think Jang Geon Seok has been the "next Jo In Sung" since Nonstop 4. People have always mentioned their resemblance. When he smiles, it's eerie. I've been critical of him as an actor, partially due to him look so much like JIS and still waiting for him to pull out something like What Happened in Bali. But, yeah, I still remember his work in Four Women and wishing to see that vulnerability and sensitivity in an adult role.

Also, JGS has mostly been cast opposite older actresses in dramas. Lee Yoon Ji in NN4, Ha Ji Won in Hwang Ji-ni, Sung Yu Ri in HGD, Lee Jia in BV. So when I watch him opposite Park Shin Hye, it's like "oh that's right. he's 22!!! shame on me lol!" :P

The strongest aspect with the writing is the detailed characterization they gave to both leads. (HTK is written much like a young Kang Mae. He seems mean, but he's actually a perfectionist who demands a lot from others and himself. That also makes him a good teacher to GMN and a strong leader. His compulsiveness and generally eccentric behaviour are also very Kang Mae-ish.) They didn't have to, but it makes the scenes much funnier because there's so much character-related stuff invested in the slapstick. The whole tachi-pig-TV scene works because, wacky as it looks, it's still very much grounded in these two characters.

Yup. Minute I saw the poster I immediately thought "please let it be a TW Idol Drama." We haven't really seen one of this in K-drama (in awhile), and originally I had hoped the Coffee Prince project was going to be that.

For what it is, YB has been almost perfect so far.

Kamenashi Kazuya stick-like arms? Excuse me, one thing you would not call a person's arms that has been an athlete since he was young, stick-like arms. Maybe when he was younger he was thin but his arms were never to be considered "stick-like". Even when he was thin he had muscles in his arms from hours and hours of playing basketball. On that particular drama especially, he toned. Have you seen the pictures for that drama? I think you just don't like Kamenashi so you resorted into bashing his arms. Gee. Plus we're talking about YB here, not Kamenashi.

Check out What Happened in Bali, I think JIS was great in that drama, really, he nearly stole the show with his histrionics. which were actually very effective and somehow appropriate for the character.

I've not seen Frozen Flower, but I think JIS has since WHIB improved his acting chops and acting reputation, but I concede he was pretty raw in his early days.

I'm semi-watching Spring Days, so I still have to watch more to get a better JIS impression in that drama.

And for the small mania dramas that succeed against the juggernauts, I love a well-done drama, ratings be damned. What upsets me in the US is that shows get canceled! when the rating are slow to catch on to the cult status of a show, such as Veronica Mars, Firefly, My So-Called Life, et. al. In Korea, the worst they can do is cut the show short, but at least they give you an ending, and if I love the drama, I'll still treasure it nonetheless.

I might check out Angel's Temptation as well, perhaps an end of the year marathon, but I think I'll be sucked into Chuno by then and all reason will have flown the coop. For now, I'm just enjoying and supporting YB all the way, team youngsters fighting!

I definitely look at ratings, but it depends on the expectations of the show. When Story of a Man did single-digit numbers, I expected as much because the drama was very unique and challenging. And that is fine. Tamra's numbers were really on par as well. Whereas you look at My Fair Lady or Cain and Abel, the ratings were more important. You HAVE to look at the ratings with a show like Princess Ja Myung Go. For a mainstream saguek to do that poorly and to be programmed for 50 episodes (big mistake), you kinda knew the show would be in trouble.

I do roll my eyes a bit with all this Iris vs. YB stuff. There were many, many shows that I liked that didn't do well. YB IS doing respectable numbers, and it's performing better than, say, Dream, Tamra, or Heading. Even from a conventional perspective, the show has been a qualified success.

Before Bali, he was considered one of the worst young actors around. You know, Sung Yu Ri level complaints about his acting skills. Then, JIS not only went to win the Baeksang for WHIB, but he then went on to win the Baeksang Film award for his performance in the movie Dirty Carnival.

At the same time, starting with Nonstop, where he was paired opposite an older actress, there was kind of a special bond between him and his fans. Jang Geon Suk kinda has a similar relationship. He's an idol, but he's been acting since he was a child. Again, go back to his brief performance in Four Women, and there you see he already then could cry up a storm and be vulnerable. I feel that maybe these kind of roles came a bit too early for him before he was comfortable with his own masculinity and actorly identity (which I still don't think he is.) So, it's nice to see something like You're Beautiful, where even though it's kinda "Jang Geon Suk 101" in terms of the character, he seems pretty comfortable in the role. Not as self-conscious.

You're Beautiful is the best drama i've seen in 2009!!!! Hope the rating will justify its quality.

Ockoala it would be interesting to compare your view on frozen flower to mine if you get a chance to see it. I personally felt his performance was cringe worthy but the actual movie was not that great either. Only Jo Jin Moo managed to escape with his charisma and acting chops intact.

BTW I have seen JIS in at least 4 movies and one drama and I have to say I haven't been very impressed.

I think JGS has more range than JIS and younger so has more potential to grow as an actor but perhaps YB is also the perfect role for him as well. I do get what Belleza meant when she describe his acting as self conscious and I could see that in "Beethoven virus". I do wonder what it was like for JGS and Lee Ji Ah to work with Kim Myung Min who is the consummate acting perfectionist. It has got to have been intimidating and full of "we're not worthy" moments.

As an actor, I think Jang Geon Seok is probably at Han Hyo Joo level for me right now. With HHJ, you don't really see her ambitions as an actress until you see her film work. Whereas with JGS, I just think the roles he's been cast in are just beyond his reach at that time. I wouldn't have cast him in Hong Gil Dong -- way too young to play the part -- but I admired the effort he put into it.

Talent is there, but a work in progress. Both actors have played "older" for years, and you can feel the weight off their shoulders when they played somebody more like in their age range. This is the easiest drama JGS has been asked to do.

Han Hyo Joo has a very likable unafftected breeziness. Almost like she isn't trying very hard. I haven't seen her in a film yet and didn't realize she had much of a film career. I've seen her in exactly three things Nonstop 5, As Much as Heaven and Earth and Brilliant Legacy. None of the roles look like it needed much effort and she pretty much played the same person. That said I find her very likable and natural and I find myself smiling whenever I watch her.

I don't think I would have ever thought of HHJ on the same level as JGS only because HHJ hasn't had the type of roles that required her to stretch so I don't even think of her as a good or potentially good actress. I think because JGS has been given more weighty materials and the opportunity to work with veteran accomplished actors the experience has gradually honed his craft and that it is revealing or coming to fruition in the YB role. Hopefully honing his acting skills is what he is interested in and not to becoming a "star". If so that would mean his TK role is JGS v1.0 and we are witnessing the birth of a true craftsman.

i thought jo in sung was really good in dirty carnival & frozen flower.his earlier films though were'nt as good as his last two films. he was also really good in something happened in bali. JIS & JGS may resemble each other but i think they're very different..personality-wise & acting-wise (but i gotta admit, they can carry the angst- look so well) so, there's really no reason to compare one from the other. i love them both!!!!

"Han Hyo Joo has a very likable unafftected breeziness."

Han Hyo Joo brings a lot of melancholy into most of her performances. (Of course, I'm leaving NN5 out of this. :D ) In good and bad ways, she's the mopiest actress of her generation, and her specialty is in playing loners. She brought to Brilliant Legacy kind of an emotional credibility about surviving on your own and having to take care of your baby brother before you were ready. In that regard, it was similar to her role in the film "Ride Away", where she had to take care of her alcoholic father and troubled brother. I'm a fan of hers, mainly because I kinda see the outside shot of being a Kim Ji Soo someday, who herself was a late bloomer in terms of acting. However, before that, she has to improve her relationship with the camera and work on "acting less."

I like Jang Geon Seok in You're Beautiful, but I also see this role as essentially the "Greatest Hits" of Jang Geon Seok's young career. It's a wonderful caricature of the "takes himself too seriously" Jang Geon Seok character that we've seen for a few years now. But, then again, that is also the thing -- there IS a "JGS Type" just as there is a "Choi Ji Woo Type" or a "Kwon Sang Woo Type." If anything, the beauty of Han Tae Kyung is how well it deflates JGS's silly futility in upholding traditional masculine, brooding, "serious" persona in the roles he takes. The enjoyment of HTK improves when you are already informed of JGS's previous roles. In the past, he was sometimes stiff, not because he was limited, but because he was stubborn and insecure. He is simply better when he's allowed to be childlike and comfortable with the expectations of the camera. Why so serious JGS? ;)

You know, I just realized Lee So Yeon is wearing a very uhm . . . . happy expression in the above poster. Angel's Temptation must be THAT good, so I gotta watch!

Because of the ratings, the YB crew had to shorten the episodes to 16!!! If it garnered ratings above of what its getting now then i probably think they would've made it to 20 episodes!! I HATE RATINGS!! I wish they also thought about the worldwide ratings as well!! ITS NOT FAIR! (of course...its a korean drama...if Koreans aren't interested then so be it...!) I do hope by the next episode, the ratings increase ALOT!

I'm from Philippines I love watching Temptation of An Angel it is a good story "beautiful" and so as You're Beautiful. They have different storyline but both are captivating Congratulations to the writer of both dramas. It made me love Korea novelas more it's my weekend therapy. Nah, I don't see it. When was the last rom-com that you saw having 20 episodes?

Also, You're Beautiful is already feeling the strain of the live-shoot. There's a lot of logistical stuff the show is doing (i.e. the parodies, the pig scene, etc.) , that requires a lot of planning and so on .

Working through the first 2 episodes of Angel's Temptation . . . and as a melo-drama fan, I think this show is brilliant. I've seen crazy plots, but this is up there . . . and yet the plot is also well executed. Everything fits. A rom-com is funnier if there's good characterization. A campy melodrama works better if there's more detail in the plot.

Let's put it this way. What she does is really messed up. I almost root for the villainess because it requires a lot of thought to bail herself out of this one!
