Lee Shi-young responds to detractors

Lee Shi-young seems like a strong person with a sense of perspective, and she has once again surprised people with her frank response to her critics. The actress who rose to fame through her role in Boys Before Flowers, followed by her stint on We Got Married with now-ex-boyfriend Jun Jin, has encountered a bit of netizen negativity in her still-new career. I wouldn’t say her anti’s are especially harsh, but she’s been criticized for anything from plastic surgery (which she openly admits) to her age scandal (she debuted somewhat late and had listed her age as 25 when it was in fact 27).

At the recent open set day for her new action movie Hong Gil Dong’s Descendants, Lee Shi-young explained that her response to online negativity is to laugh: “If I get angry, I write back, ‘Worry about yourself instead.'”

She has also been refreshingly candid about her breakup with Jun Jin, saying, “Everything that has been reported in the news is true, so it doesn’t stress me out. I’ve dreamed of being an actress for a long time and the path I have to take is clear, so those reports don’t affect my spirits, and I’m not bothered about negative comments.”

I think Lee Shi-young shows promise as an actor, so it’s nice to see her focusing on the work and not getting caught up in the white noise of celebrity life. She said she is very happy to have dramas and film projects to work on, “and I’d love it if I could keep working like I did this year. I want my acting to be judged based on my skills.”

somehow her frank and straight forward personality makes me attracted to her.
actresses are usually 'fake', trying too hard, but she seems not really concern about other people says about her, and that's interesting.

it's too bad she broke up with Jun Jin, they did fight a lot on "We Got Married" but they did have chemistry so I was rooting on them.. well, both of them deserve the best.

Yap nothing wrong with that. She’s actually brave answering candidly. Her bright disposition shows her maturity. People shouldn’t be so judgmental about age issues. She’s not the only one for god sake.

I find her candid nature a nice contrast to some other Korean actresses who occasionally put forth a demure, gentle...dare I say... bland persona. Her honesty should be an example for other celebs--as we well know, netizens almost always find out the truth (shiver).

It's good to see that she doesn't take any B.S. from the netizens. As LSY puts it, they should just "worry about themselves instead."

i wasn't that into her, but learning about how honest and frank she is with her response makes me attracted to her and want to watch her acting...I like actors/actresses that don't always give politically correct answers to "look" good in the media....honesty is the best policy, and I like that about her....i'll be watching out for her future dramas, all the best to her!

I also like her honesty and how she handled herself. She and Jun Jin were so funny in We Got Married. They also look good together as a real couple. Too bad they broke up.

How honest is she actually being? After being discovered for lying about your age, what else can you do but come clean?

Javabeans, I was wondering if there are male celebrities who lied about their age. Why is it that female celebrities are the one being expose about their real age?

mimmay: that could have been something somewhat out of her control since her agency would have put her age as part of her "image packet."

and like the others said, i think its great that she doesnt take crap from the netizens who seem to give these celebrities no rest. go lee shi-young for showing that you have class!

mimmay:

The age-lie wasn't "discovered"...it was something that she was honest about. On WGM she told Jun Jin that they went to the same high school (I can't remember whether she said they were the same grade or he was one ahead of her...sorry). After they filmed for the day the producers asked her if she wanted them to edit their conversation because it might hurt her reputation for lying about her age...she said no.

Her attitude is really refreshing. I like that she isn't afraid to speak what she thinks rather than what the netizans want.

@minmay, her lying about her age isn't something i'll hold against her (or any kdrama actor for that matter). it is usually their management agencies that want to make an impression that they are younger so as to get more attention and better projects. youth is a premium in the entertainment industry.

@jeb, i didn't know about that incident in WGM but i can believe that she'd rather have it aired as is.

@ peanut butter

You said the producers are the ones who realized the age difference. Doesn't that make it a "discovery" by the producers? Just because it wasn't "discovered" by the netizens, doesn't mean it wasn't a "discovery". Although I'm sure the truth would have come out even if the segment was edited out, I give her credit for not wanting it cut out.

It's so easy to blame management but I'm pretty sure the actors and actresses are aware of what's written on their profiles. Even if it's an indirect lie, it's still a lie. I, like others, don't view this as a big deal (well, at least I don't care enough to be angry over it) since many do lie about their age. I just don't understand why. I don't really see any difference in shaving off two years on your profile.

These agencies will never learn! they aways make their stars lie about their real age even though eventually the truth will always come out. Nobody can hide such fact forever and as much as I appreciate miss Lee's honesty, I still don't get why she lied at the first place, she should have said no when the company asked her to lie. If you want to be called a persistent person, you should do it all the way, stick to what you think is right. I agree that lying about age is totally unnecessary, most of the actors/actresses look younger than their real age anyway...
@Djes : It's exceptionally hot in Jakarta these days isn't it?

Just in response to those wondering, apparently 2 years makes a huge difference for a woman in the Korean entertainment industry. When LSY began going on auditions, she was constantly berated with condescending comments like "What are you thinking starting an acting career so late? At your age you should be getting married." After she shaved those 2 years off the casting directors were no longer giving her a hard time and she was hired for her first acting gig.

@Gita : yes, so hot it hurts. I got headache everytime I have to go out the office :(

I think Lee Shi Young decided to reveal her true age after she has "better position".
As a rookie, she had to face harsh comments when she auditioned, and I think it's believable that she stated she's 2 years younger.
Well, not every one thinks that her honesty is something extra ordinary - I agree - but honesty is something I always respect..so.

I hated her in Hong Gil Dong. her acting was so artificial. and she has lost her pure innocent image due to the surgery and i think the doctor has made a mess out of her face. honestly i would not sit a 2 hour movie bc of her. i might do it despite her, like i did HGD.
