Horror dramas Hon and Hometown of Legends

Lee Seo-jin of Hon

Since horror is supposed to offer a chill in the hot summer months, we can see why there’s such a sudden burst of horror material these days. Two television dramas will soon add to the tally, giving us a Monday-thru-Thursday lineup of horror through August and September.

MBC’s Hon (“Soul”) is first, premiering next Wednesday and starring Lee Seo-jin (Yi San), Lee Jin (King and I), and newcomer Im Joo-eun. The drama recently released its latest teaser posters in anticipation of its August 5 airdate.

The other series may sound familiar: Hometown of Legends is making a return to KBS2 airwaves, having aired in the late 1990s and then been revived last summer as a short anthology horror show (which was recapped by Sevenses). The series was fairly popular, averaging ratings in the upper teens. Lee Jin of Hon was actually featured in one of the segments, but this latest run will feature a fresh cast of actors, including former pop singer Jeon Hye-bin (Scale of Providence), Kim Ji-seok (Likable or Not), Lee Young-eun (Likable or Not), and Hong Soo-hyun (Rough Cut).

While Hon is a modern-day paranormal-horror series (a criminal psychologist looks into a wrongful death and ends up becoming devilish himself), Hometown of Legends is based in ye olden days of the Joseon era and incorporates familiar bits of folklore.

Hon airs ten episodes on MBC on Wednesdays and Thursdays and premieres August 5. Hometown of Legends airs eight episodes on KBS2 Mondays and Tuesdays and premieres August 10.

Can you imagine the ease of doing the English subs? I bet the Korean and the English would be basically the same:

Victim 1: Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
Victim 2: *gurk!*
Victim 3: AHHHHHHHH!

Done!

(Unless, of course, Korean ppl scream differently than other people in other languages. I was surprised to learn that onomatopoeia depends entirely upon the culture and language... For example, American dogs say "ruff" but Korean dogs say "mung." And don't get me started on roosters. LOL!)

Ah, but do Korean cows say "Moo"?

Back on topic...I don't know about Hon. If it involves demonic possession then I am O.U.T. I like horror, but I don't mess with the Devil. I've never seen Lee Seo-jin in anything.

Korean cows apparently speak in full sentences.

But back to horror stuff - have you ever just started dreaming about something scary and then you wake up and you have the fuzzy hairs going straight up on your arms? Imagine that for a whole series! Tooooooooo scary.

But if you were investigating something and you found yourself in a room and it was empty and creepy but you felt SOMETHING in the room with you, and it felt evil and devilish, what would you do? Man, I am creeping myself out. I would flee, obviously, and not come back ever. Just to be on the safe side, I would head directly to wherever there are a lot of people and not be alone for at least 24 hours. BUT, if you HAD to go back (it was your job and you needed the money and this was your career, etc.), then I would suggest going back with like 30 people that you pay to just hang out with you, and make them all wear the same clothes and hairstyle as you, so that the ghost will be confused and won't know which one of you to possess. The more people you bring, the better your shot at coming out of the room alive and healthy and not possessed. Then you've outwitted the ghost and/or demon, and you've done your job. *bow*

ROFL @Samsooki's comment~
Hometown Legends 2009 has one big guts to fight against Queen Seon Duk, last year was successful so we saw a comeback, looks like next year we won't see it! haha.. Queen Seon duk is deadly. Might as well cancel all shows when MBC Anniversary dramas air. haha.

**claps**

Well done, sir!

Ah, scary stuff. My grandmother lived in a huge white house when I was a child; classic Southern big white house with a wraparound porch, crepe myrtles and azaleas everywhere, right off of Main Street downtown. Just beautiful. I loved that house. BUT...upstairs there were three bedrooms; the blue room, the yellow room, and the white room. The white room was fine, the yellow room was fine, but there was always something very off about the blue room. It must have been our imagination, but it seemed like there was always cold air coming out of the room. But the upstairs part of the house wasn't air conditioned!

My grandmother always told us to make sure the door to the blue room was closed. Why? I'm not sure; I never asked! But the weird thing is...that door would never STAY closed. You would go downstairs and see the door was clearly shut when you passed by, and come back two minutes later and it would be wide open. And these were big old heavy doors, too! Creepy.

Needless to say, whenever I spent the night there, I slept downstairs!

Because of the A/C, of course. ;-)

Um...sorry to stray off topic. Again. It's Samsooki's fault!

Hon looks really promising but I won't set my standards high, it IS a drama afterall, I highly doubt it'll be "psychotically and gory creepy", I'll make sure to watch it more as a thriller with a bit of blood splatter. Is it me or are korean horror directors fascinated by lesbian relationships within friends. Whispering Corridors....and Hon shows really close friendship. I can't wait to see it though ^^

@7 sayroo
You're absolutely right, lol MBC's anniversary dramas are always powerhouses and behemoths. The station always know which storyline will attract or make addicts out of viewers . The monday-tuesday timeslot has always been won by MBC ever since East of Eden took it (Yi San was a powerhouse too but When It's At Night broke the chain)

I really hope HON brings MBC success, afterall they were a bit in the "economic trouble" zone. Then again, Yoon Eun Hye's drama might surely beat it.

I've noticed that KBS doesn't take up any complex storyline on it's channel ;L nothing like EoE, StS....just a couple of action dramas, and rom com/////

Even though I get scared easily, I still love to watch horror movies so I will definitely check Hon out next Wednesday.

Talking about horror stories, I'm totally convinced that my workplace is haunted. Whenever I'm in the restroom, I get this eerie feeling that someone is in there with me even though I know that I'm all alone. Then, I found out a few of my coworkers had similar experiences. One of my coworker arrived early to work one day and was all alone at her desk when she heard a noise that sounded like someone was typing on the computer keyboard on the next aisle. She asked if anyone was there and no one answered. She went to the next aisle and no one was there. Another person heard a loud noise that sounded like a drawer was slammed shut but she knew she was all alone. We were talking about our experiences when someone mentioned that our workplace was a morgue back in World War II. I didn't really believe her so I googled most haunted places in the city where we work and our workplace popped up. Needless to say, I always make someone go with me to the restroom from then on.

@ samsooki... you are hilarious... You are right, I never understand why dogs in Korea goes "mung-mung" and the Korean cow ad is hysterical...

There is quite a bit of personal experiences... I share mine too, tecnically its not a spooky experience but it is scary all the same..

I have been experiencing sleep paralysis quite a bit and its really tiring... coz somehow Asian believes its techinically being "pressed" by a spirit... I was just telling my Dad that I can't scream when it happens.... and he was like, why do you want to scream? And I was like... I am panicking, screaming seems the best way to release the fear... And I normally wake up, eyes wide open, thinking that I have let a voice out of my throat... I think I am just too stressed.

On the other hand... hmmpt... Lee Seo Jin the hearthbreaker... I don't understand why wouldn't he come clean about his breakup to Kim Jung Eun... I feel bad for Kim Jung Eun... but back to the drama... it seems it has became a trend for summer horror flicks to invade not just the cinema but the small screen too...

hmmm...how would they rate this one? PG-no chickens? Anyway, I'm not a fan of this genre. Isn't life in itself scary enough? Ya...what's with this flux of horror movies and dramas?

@Porcelain

I used to experience sleep paralysis (aka Old Hag Syndrome) a lot when I was younger. I couldn't scream either, and in some case couldn't even breathe and felt like I was dying. Then eventually, somehow, I snap myself out of it, and regain the ability to move again. I was told this happens when you're unfit, unwell, or as you said -- too stressed. But I prefer to believe that it's actually a demon or an "Old Hag" that presses down on you rendering you immobile ;)

@omo

Last years' Hometown Legends was very PG-13, most of the episodes revolved around themes of revenge, guilt and loss, and there's nothing really disturbing or horrific. It was a very family orientated horror series and I would expect both HL2009 and Hon to follow suit. Nothing to be afraid of! And yes, life itself is a lot scarier than any scary movie.

I do not like horror movies/dramas at all, but I might give his one a try. I like that Lee Seo Jin stars in it. He seems to choose projects that are different, and some are high rated. An indication of the appeal of his dramas is the number of them that YA Entertainment has licensed.

I too have experienced sleep paralysis, but it always (and only) happens when I stay with a cousin who lives in Mexico City. Regardless of the house she lives in at the time. It is a really frighting experience. In my case, praying helps me snap out of it.
