Press conference day for Friend, Our Legend
by javabeans
MBC’s much-awaited drama adaptation of the 2001 movie Friend, titled Friend, Our Legend [친구, 우리들의 전설], is set to premiere in a couple weeks, and the cast and crew held their drama production press conference on June 17 in Seoul.
The cast has some rather large shoes to fill, and none more so than Hyun Bin (The World They Live In), who takes the role originally played by Jang Dong-gun in the film that broke box office records at the time. Kim Min-joon (Tazza), Seo Do-young (Unstoppable Wedding), and Lee Shi-un fill out the quartet of friends.
Hyun Bin, Kim Min-joon, Seo Do-young, Lee Shi-un
As the lead, Hyun Bin returns to television a year following his last project, the television-themed The World They Live In. After shooting to popularity following 2005’s My Name Is Kim Sam-soon, Hyun Bin hasn’t had the best luck with his drama roles; both Snow Queen and World pulled in pretty low (around 5%-7%) ratings.
The actor described his feeling of taking over for Jang Dong-gun in his character, saying, “At first, I felt a certain amount of pressure, but as filming went on, I was able to enjoy myself without fear. I’m not afraid of being compared with Jang Dong-gun sunbae from the film.”
He added, “I also had to decide which aspects of Jang Dong-gun sunbae’s acting from the film to carry over and which parts I would make new on my own. The things I tried my best to do were the expressions of my eyes and emotions.” Hyun Bin also said that Jang hadn’t given him any particular pointers, merely telling him, “Entrust everything to the director.” Not long ago, Jang had visited, “and he watched without saying much, which was a huge support.”
As the story is set in Busan, known for its thick Saturi accent, Hyun Bin made use of voice recordings of his dialogue, which director Kwak Kyung-taek taped himself.
The drama airs on Saturdays and Sundays beginning June 27.
Lead actor Hyun Bin:
Co-star Kim Min-joon
Rounding out the foursome are Seo Do-young and Lee Shi-un:
Wang Ji-hye (How to Meet a Perfect Neighbor) takes the female lead. She is joined by actresses Bae Geu-rin (Lawyers of Korea, Sharp #3), who sports the shortest haircut of the three, and Jung Yumi (no, not the one from Que Sera Sera but another young actress from Great King Sejong):

I love the cast in abstract (Hyun Bin and Kim Min Joon especially), but aren't they all much too old to be playing highschoolers? I don't even mean in their ages, but in the way they look! They are the oldest-looking high school students since Bae Yong Joon and Choi Ji Woo in Winter Sonata, but at least there the high-school phase didn't last for that long.
Maybe they are all really really dim and thus had to repeat each class 5 times?

Ah...ten more days. :D
I guess they filmed the high school scenes at the very end.
So, does this mean filming has now completed, or are they still wrapping up?
@ Samsooki
Go ahead. I dare you. :P

Seo Do Young looks weird in short haircut.
I must agree that four of them look too old as highschoolers, but so did Jang Dong Gun and Yoo Oh Sung..

I think only part of the movie was about school years and major parts of it were years later. So for me it's fine if they look a little old for school students. Even the much older ones did the same thing (like in I hate you but it's fine, the three veterans artists took roles when they were around 17s and it's fine too).

i think they look quite alright in their school uniform. or maybe i'm just so used to seeing older actors playing high school kids that it doesn't faze me anymore.
now i see why this addiction starts and cannot end. just too many good shows. and good osts. was listening to tazza's ost and was like "omg, wants to watch"...and now listening to slingshot's ost and am like "omg, wants to watch"...and now seeing good actors rising up in good dramas..."omg, wants to watch".
when is this going to end?

by the way, mmm.....
kim min joon looks the best among the four with that kind of haircut..., I guess, the shape of his head fits that haircut. ^-^
Worst is Seo do young! ^-^ Still, i love that guy!
Hyun bin looks like my cousin in high school! lol!
I wonder if this movie has a good plot.......I hope this isnt a movie about guys fighting and betraying each other over a girl....again.
I might take a peek just because of those cute guys! hehehe!

What a haircut - but it looks good on all of them. Every time I think of Kim Min Joon, he always has long-ish hair, but he looks good short. Hyun Bin also looks good with the short manly hair, than the pretty boy cut :O
Hair aside, I saw clips of the drama and I'm soooooo looking forward to it. High hopes! High hopes! Hopefully something good to watch after A Story of a Man.

@MEIKO, personally since I lovelovelove the movie, I'm not one bit worried about the plot, but it'll still have its 'cliches', yes there will be a girl btn the buds, but it won't be the only arc, just one of many...think along the line of Once Upon A Time in America...Busan version.
I've read there r mixed feelings concerning how identical the drama and the movie are. Some netizens r already slamming it as too copycat/unoriginal, while others like it. I'm not sure, I want a balance btn nostalgia and new, or else I see no point in doing a remake.
I honestly think HB and SDY (he has such a baby face) still can pass as older looking highschoolers, but KMJ does look too manly (but so did Yoo fr the original).

For the oldest set of high schoolers, check out Queen of Housewives. The lead actress must already be in her forties.

The coolest of them all....HyunBIn of course! The pic are funny it can’t hide their age.
Sometimes…. well actually most of the time fans patronize certain drama not because of the story but first and foremost because who’s going to be in it. Though the story came in the latter part of the reasons still the big factor is the actors.
I don’t actually fine fault in HB previous drama because one way or another it has its own strong points. I cried a bucket in Snow Queen when HB character hides himself and not able to pursue his DREAMS!!!
I’ve watched TWTLI (The Word They Live In) and despite the fire reviews and low rating I was actually grateful that I watched it. The camaraderie is touching, the concern in the middle management down to the lower level; I fine it more realistic than On Air which focuses mainly on the four characters and not much to the function/contribution of the crew.
I won’t be expecting high ratings for this one for some reason I knew the only thing good about this is HB acting… the pressure is greater on him despite his co-actors achievements on their own, but coming from the very successful MNIKSS the world is still watching if he deserve the superstar status that he has today.

Of course, I prefer KMJ's longer hair or Tazza cut...or even the high school buzz cut,
but I doubt we'll be spared the scary pama. :(
That's okay, though. We're in it for the acting, right? ;)

Hyun Bin seems to look slimmer than he was in 'The World They Live In', nice!
WARNING! POTENTIAL SPOILER!
I read a bit on the movie 'Friend' and being a sucker for happy endings, that movie sounded like one with a not-so-happy ending.
Does anyone know if the drama's timeline will stretch beyond what the movie covered so there's some resolution on the movie's sort-of cliff-hanger ending?
I really want to watch Hyun, loved him in MNIKSS, my 2nd fav KDrama (next to CP)
And I'm currently watching 'In-Soon is Pretty' so keen to see the lead actor again in a new drama.
Seems there's a lot of good Kdrama these days... Hooray!
Cheers!
