Kim Joon’s musical debut
by javabeans
T-Max rapper and Boys Before Flowers actor Kim Joon is making his theater debut: He’s taking on a role in the musical Youthful March [젊음의 행진]
He doesn’t have the lead role, but I’m curious about this nonetheless. Kim Joon’s got experience in the pop-music world but he’s a rapper, not a singer, so perhaps the transition is more of a leap than when other pop vocalists make the jump to musical theater. (Such as: Ok Joo-hyun, Lee Ji-hoon.)
The lead role will alternate between actor-singers Lee Ji-hoon (You’re My Destiny) and Lee Sung-jin (from the musical version of Singles), while the female lead role is double-cast between musical actresses Kim Ji-woo and Lee Jung-mi. Kim Joon plays a student teacher.
The musical Youthful March debuted in 2007 and is described as a “jukebox musical” that mixes the popular 1990s manhwa “Yongshimi” with the ’80s music variety program “Youthful March.” (I’m not familiar with either program so I can only speculate, but it seems like the musical is meant to evoke a pleasant sense of nostalgia while updating itself for the modern watcher.)
The plot features the now-33-year-old Yongshimi preparing for a concert, when she runs into her old schoolmate and flashes back to 1991 — and the musical therefore features such old pop hits as Lee Seung-chul’s “Last Concert” (Love this song! Listen below), Kim Gun-mo’s “Excuse” (핑계) , and others.
The musical runs from July 18 through October 25 at Seoul’s Coex Artium.

SONG OF THE DAY
Lee Seung-chul – “마지막 콘서트” (Last Concert). If the musical is supposed to evoke the sort of fond nostalgia I get when listening to songs like this from those good ol’ days of yore, I TOTALLY GET IT. Ahh, I remember first hearing this song and falling for it way back when. [ Download ]

Nothing like a song from yore.
Yore: back when men were real men, women were real women and "마지막 콘서트" by Lee Seung-chul or "이젠 안녕" by 015B was always the last song for the nohrehbang queue list...

This is one of those moments that makes me honestly wish I were in Korea right now. I think he would be good in this drama, and while I never really got into the BBF craze, I have liked Kim Joon since you posted that article about life from the center.

LOL! I have no idea why I found your comment so amusing that while I'm here typing this I'm still LOL!!!
Kim Joon is looking a little skinny these days. I hope the extra workload isn't wearing our Don Juan down. Beef up, kiddo. You're going to need the strength for your musical. Good luck! Break a leg.

YAY for Kim Joon. I so want to be in Korea right now so I could see him act/sing on stage. Even if it is just a minor part, but still he gets a break. Away from all the BBF craze and the never ending comparison of his success to the other boys. Who knows he might be successful in theater!

Does musical theatre have a very big following in Korea? I'm always hearing about stars doing it.

First, let me just preface this by saying: KIM JOON IS MINE!!!!!!!!!! Yes, Kim Joon and Kim Bum are my Flower Four boys! The rest of you fangirlies keep your grubby paws off them! *lol*
Second, let me just say, I WISH I WAS IN KOREA! If I had the money, was able to get the time off work, etc, etc, I would SO be there! Kim Joon is an amazing performer! And he CAN sing! Has anyone heard T-Max's "Lionheart"? He has a very small bit of singing in that song, and he's good.
Thirdly, let me just wish him a ton of luck. I know he will be great. I really hope they release a cast recording of this show, because somehow, I will find a way to get it!
Ok, I'm done now. Thank you for listening. :)

Thanks JB!!! I love it when you post news about Kim Joon. I am an absolute fan! He is such an underrated star. I am a little surprised to see him take part in a musical though. Technically it's a smaller leap from for a singer to go into a musical but since he's already made the jump into dramas with BOF, I was expecting another drama.
Its a definite step back but hopefully one where he can polish up those acting chops and grow some stage presence. That would surely help him to transition better into more meatier roles in the next drama he takes up.
