Moon Geun-young celebrates 22nd birthday
by javabeans
Moon Geun-young (Tale of Two Sisters, Painter of the Wind) celebrated her 22nd birthday with a group of 700 fans, and it sure looked like she had a good time.
The birthday fanmeeting took place on May 2 in Seoul at Moon’s current school, Sungkyunkwan University, where she studies Korean literature. Moon Chae-won, with whom Moon Geun-young acted in Painter of the Wind, was also a special guest at the fanmeeting.
The event was divided into two parts: In Part 1, she was presented with gifts and received “Happy Birthday” messages from fellow actors Kim Tae-hee, Kim Joo-hyuk, Kim So-eun, Kim Ji-soo, Ryu Deok-hwan, Ryu Seung-yong, Bae Soo-bin, and others.
Moon Geun-young is known as a “donation angel” for her charity work, such as furnishing rural schools with educational supplies. In the spirit of that, members of her fan café “Angels” prepared a surprise, raising funds for books, bookshelves, toys, and other school materials to give to a schoolroom in Haenam (to whom Moon had previously donated funds). The children recipients of the donation sent along a happy birthday video message, at which Moon teared up to watch.
For Part 2 of the event, the actress prepared a dance, which she performed with a professional dance team “Friends.” She also acted as informal DJ in sharing some of her favorite songs with fans.

skinny or otherwise, she looks way better to me in her Tommy Hilfiger dance gear, than that purple dress.
take away those peep-toe Wedgie platforms she's wearing, slip on some flat Mary Janes and now that dress will look like it belongs to a 6 yr old, front bow sash et al.

geez people. Just because you may feel super fat looking at her because she doesn't mirror the body type YOU'RE used to - doesn't mean that there is something wrong with her.
Different people have different body types.
The girl looks fine.

only 22 and she seems to have been around so long, I must say that I only really noticed her after watching Painter, though I had seen her in 'My Little Bride' . Goes to show a TV drama while perhaps lacking the status of a Film does have the advantage of 20 hours plus on the screen over weeks. She is young but also has a young looking face, that will likely look much the same when she 30, minus any 'babyfat', much like say Jang Nara who has the same sort of 'look'

hmm.. i dont know about the body type comment that someone made above. i agree people have different builds but she was not this skinny before, thus the weight comments people are making have nothing to do with that. she has lost weight from before, and this has been commented about everywhere on every site, but i think she looks a bit better than before? she's so cute though, happy 22nd birthday!

ABSOLUTELY LOVE HER ^-^
She's so awesome. Really. There's like nothing that she can't do and yet she's so humble and down to earth, and really does care about her fans. Apparently, she did a CyCaD tour where she went around her cyworld, fan cafe, and DC gallery and left a thank you message on each :-)
I really wish she'd come out in a new project soon!! I want to see more of her great acting ^^ She was fabulous as Shin Yoon Bok in the Painter of the Wind, and I heard that the broadcast of the drama finished airing in Taiwan and that she gathered a lot of chinese fans :)

Absolutely love MOON GEUN YOUNG!!!
She's such a great role model! I wish the US would have someone like her to look up to instead of people like Lindsay Lohen, Britney Spears, etc...
It seems that there's nothing she can't do. She can DEFINITELY act, sing, dance.. and on top of that she's very studious, down-to-earth, as well as kind-hearted. She knows how to give back to society, and knows the true meaning of "noblesse oblige." And, you can tell that she REALLY does care about and love her fans a lot from her letters on her fan cafe. She seems so REAL, nothing fake about her, unlike other celebs who tend to seem fake.
I wish her nothing but the best on her 22nd birthday this year. I can't believe she's turning 22 already. It seems like yesterday when she played the young Eun-Suh in Autumn Story. She definitely has a bright future ahead of her! Wish to see her act in a project soon!!

"In the spirit of that, members of her fan café “Angels” prepared a surprise, raising funds for books, bookshelves, toys, and other school materials to give to a schoolroom in Haenam (to whom Moon had previously donated funds)."
Moon Geun-young not only donated funds to the Haenam school for underprivileged children, but she rescued it back in 2006 when it was at risk of being closed down because of a lack of funds to finance the building. She bought the land, and the building, and rebuilt the school :-)
I recall you posting an article a while back about how the Hae-nam children gathered money in a red piggy bank to help others by donating the money, which they said they learned from the charity deeds of MGY.
Just an update on that, she recently donated the school and the land to a NGO organization called New People to provide professional management to manage the school :) The school provides care to about 70 underprivileged children in Hae-nam.
Here's a video of it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nHFRizKeEp8
Great news huh? especially from the rest of the Korean entertainment news that seems to be filled with a lot of suicides, drug scandals, etc.

For us she seems very skinny but for Korean standards she's just fine, I guess...I was in Korea last month and to my surprise when you go to the malls, even the mannequins are bigger than the actual size of the clothes that they sell. I don't consider myself fat (size 6), but it was so hard to find something that will fit me nicely...almost everything is way too small..they only have one size fits all.

She's adorable. One of my Top 3. Cute and great actress. She picks great roles and I look forward to all her work.
Whatever to all the comments about her weight. Yeah, she's skinny. Some people are naturally thin. Like me. So it kind of gets on my nerves when people blast other people for being too skinny. Some people JUST DON'T GAIN WEIGHT.
ANYWAYS, as you can tell, I've had issues with that (like how it's not okay to make fun of a fat person but it's just fine to do so with a skinny person).
Also, you have to think about the extra pressure and stress entertainers have. I'm not just talking about the pressure to lose weight, I'm talking about work hours and general stress. I never realized how much that can have an effect on your weight until this last summer when I had to be the hostess to my friends from Spain, who had a different eating schedule than I did. In two weeks, I lost 15 pounds. I was so busy and their eating schedule was so different that I didn't even realize until the 2 weeks were over that I had lost that much weight.
So, my little rant is over. I don't think she's anorexic or bulimic. I think she's one of those naturally thin girls who maybe just had a rough and stressful week. Leave her alone.

I think Moon Geun-young's weight remarks aren't mere body-snarking but out of concern, because yes, some people are naturally thin, but Moon has drastically dropped weight over the past year. Like with Jung Ryeo-won, when naturally thin actresses become scary-thin, it's really noticeable and fans worry, because it doesn't seem healthy. Moon has not always been this thin.

it doesn't suit her, i mean her thinnest. She lost the sweetness i think. I hope she will try to put some flesh. Her face looks kinda dry, i think it's because of lack of vitamins or nourishment.

Thank you javabeans for writing in yourself and clarifying the weight remarks. I remember watching her in a movie from a while back with my boyfriend and she looked very different! I actually showed this picture to my boyfriend who hadn't seen images of her since that movie, and he was taken aback. She seems definitely like more of a role model than many of her peers in the entertainment industry in all of the good work she has done, I just wish someone would address her dramatic weight loss with her. If she had always been thin, then it would be easier to say that is her natural body shape. But she hasn't been, and that is why it seems like a concern. Besides, being that thin, even if it is naturally, is not good for your health. Before people start jumping me on this comment, I am about to graduate with my degree in nutrition and have a lot of experience in this area. Plus, I am by no means a big person and often get told I look about 18, but I am her age and definitely look way older than her! But I really do love how generous of a person she is and wish her only the best of luck! Just with maybe some more food.

Ehhh, I agree that she looks skinnier than she did when she was younger, but IMO, I don't think it's as bad/severe as it looks.
Obviously I don't know too much about her personal life, but I think I would attribute most of it to body changes as she grows up and stress from work.
Now if she continues to get smaller and smaller, then yeah, it's a cause for concern, but for now, I don't think it's that bad.
(Now this could be biased from the fact that I admire her as an actress and humanitarian. Also, I personally get really annoyed when people tell me to "Eat a burger!" or "You're too skinny!". It's frustrating because I do eat, a lot, it just doesn't show)
Eh but I'm not going to turn this into a body issue post. I just came in here to say that I adore Moon Geun-young and look forward to more of her works!

Ok, I would also just like to clarify one thing for all of the naturally slender girls out there. While I may joke with my classmates about throwing sandwiches at really skinny girls, that is definitely not something I would ever seriously say. People come in all shapes and sizes and we should recognize that more! However, it is definitely true that a weight more in the middle range is much healthier than either extremes, very thin or overweight. I used to be really thin and no matter what I ate, I was still too thin. Of course, getting older has cured me of my "problem" (hehe sometimes I wish it hadn't, gotta watch my ever growing backside every now and then). Bottom line: be healthy and love your body!

@ mishane #32 and 37, agree with ya.
She is thin but not unhealthy looking. She went through a lot in 2008 with POTW filming and her two filming accidents. After that, she got busy with the awards, CF filming and re-adjusting to her 3rd yr university studies. Cut the girl some slack. She will either regain more weight, or if not, she looks fine the way she is now. She seems too mature and sensible to wither away.
She is a 22 yr old woman, and not a chubby kid anymore. It's us viewers who have to accept it - not her.
She was glowing during her bday fan meeting. The fans performed for her, and she for them, hence that dance. There were POTW parodies and she got in on the fun. They had the rare chance to grill her (and briefly, MCW). It was a happy and fun occasion which unfortunately seemed to be sidelined amidst the anorexia/bulimia speculation.

in regard to Painter in the wind,,,I saw she had a little bump on her nose and though wow that one big zit they trying to cover up..then it didn't go a way and left me wondering just what it was..now I read she broke her nose making the TV drama..so am guessing that is the course......
Watch her Innocent Steps last night, didn't think much of it as a comedy but it worked as a romance. [the way she was treated brought and sold turned my stomach so ruined any laughs]
