Magazine Allo postponed following plagiarism accusations
by javabeans
Han Chae-young
It looks like KBS’s Magazine Allo (the fashion drama starring Han Chae-young, Kim Haneul) may not make it to air after all.
The drama is not canceled, merely postponed, but with plagiarism claims asserted by competing drama Style, KBS has decided to swap out Magazine Allo for a different drama, a law series called Partner. The show will follow current Wednesday-Thursday series Accidental Couple.
A representative from KBS’s drama department stated that legally they are clear and have not infringed on copyright, but they dislike being caught up in a fight over the matter. They’ll presumably give the matter more thought while Partner takes over the timeslot, although this may indicate that Magazine Allo is in danger of being dropped.
This is too bad, since I was looking forward to Allo much more than Style, even if the latter is based on a popular novel — I just can’t get past the casting (Lee Jia, Ryu Shi-won). Oh well, it’s not like I’m hurting for dramas to watch at the moment. Style will premiere on July 25 on SBS (it’s a weekend show).

I think this would be the smarter move regardless. Leave it to cooler heads to prevail, and clever-er people to start moving pieces around the chess board, and taking advantage of this legal morass.
1. Allo already has the name recognition given the stellar cast, and when it does air after postponement, it will likely be the only fashion drama out there and so it won't have to fight against a similar themed drama. Plus, it comes out of this legal mess as the gracious one, bowing to Style and allowing it to go first.
2. If Style does well, then the public will likely be hungry for another fashion drama, and Magazine Allo can go to school on why Style did well. If Allo schools itself well enough, it will likely do as well or better than Style, at a minimum.
3. If Style does poorly, then Magazine Allo can learn from the mistakes made and hopefully not make the same ones, and then it can position itself as the fashion drama that WON'T put you to sleep.
4. Postponing Magazine Allo also means that when it does air, hopefully the economy will be in more of a rebound (if in fact this is the low point), and so ad revenue might be higher, people might be more optimistic, and the timing for a fashion drama might be better months down the road than right now, when people are less inclined to think about the fashion industry as they are about staples and saving money.
There doesn't seem to be much downside to waiting.

Samsoki makes a good point but I can't help feel a bit disappointed. I'm been looking forward to Han chae young's return to the small screen but it's been one dropped drama after the next. Well not counting BBF of course considering her role was very minor.

Han Chae Young is nearly too pretty. She is so beautiful...Über-pretty? Is it possible to be SO pretty that it is distracting from one's acting performance? I sort of feel like they plain-jane'ed her down in DGCH, so that she didn't sparkle too much and electrocute TV cameras and so on. If Han Chae Young turns the fashion volume up to '11' for Magazine Allo, she might start torching the location sets. Just knowing that Han Chae Young is a lead character in a fashion drama makes the premiere episode of Magazine Allo a "must-see" TV event, especially if it stands apart and alone from Style. A small part of me doesn't even care if Allo is boring - I just want to see the opening credits, and see all the bling and glamour shots and the music and so on.
(One more point - IF, and this is a big IF, if Magazine Allo and Style both had the same story line (ala the plagarism issues), then really, Style is getting a huge lift by going first. Magazine Allo then has to figure out a new story line and new plot points, etc. Nevertheless, this may or may not be a bad thing for Allo though, because who knows whether Style's original storyline is boring anyway, and so if Allo DID have a similar story line, it would have been boring too. So, changing things up might actually work in Allo's favor.)

I have NOT been following news on either drama but this combination registered:
Nothing against the dude but ....
(to me anyways) Style + Ryu Shi Won = oxymoron, no???

I second a lot of Samsooki's thoughts on this matter, but one more (random) thing occurred to me.. Dare I hope that Partner will have a plot line about dramas suing each other for plagiarism? Because I'd LOVE for this round of BTS drama to make it to air as a storyline somewhere. I'd laugh my arse off. XD
I'm a little on the fence about HCY most of the time.. I loved her in Choon-hyang, and I loved her cameo in My Girl, but most of the time I don't feel she lives up to her reputation (I didn't like her in BBF (the Japanese version of her character was much cooler), and I hated her in Autumn Tale).
I am sorry to see Style go first, though. Lee Jiah is adorable, but I'm not sure she can really carry a drama without the assistance of someone awesome like Kim Myung Min. :/

This is a bit disappointing as Allo was the first and only fashion drama that has ever caught my attention. I would hope that Allo does air and isn't canceled indefinitely or something like that. I have to agree with Samsooki's points. Having Style (what kind of name is that, anyway? Couldn't they be more creative? At least Magazine Allo sounds original) go first would be a good move and could allow Allo more time to work out some details and get the script into a better shape...But I doubt Style would be able to catch my attention at all, at least not in the way that Magazine Allo has. Maybe Partners will be on my watch list.

I hope that Allow will continue to air in the future and not be dropped. So far all of these fashion dramas and fashion dramas to come have not sparked any interest in me... and I was looking forward to Allo so much. *Sigh*

I don't mean this as an insult AT ALL and don't mean to offend, but isn't Han Chae-young's face a little...serpentine?

Really??? I have never found HCY to be that pretty. In fact, I find the ps to be a little...off (for lack of a better word).
Is it Friday yet? Perhaps, we (I) need more enlightenment from the male perspective of what constitutes female prettiness. O_o

@ hjkomo and Nom Kitteh
I also think that this woman is not that pretty at all. She has all the “perfect” facial features and yet they are put together in the worst possible way. Her face is too small for everything else on it. But she’s not the worst case though… I cringe every time I see pictures of Go Ara because her head is too small compared to the rest of her body. How can someone with such wrong proportions be a model, I have no idea…

Will be interested to see if 'Style' ends up as a remake of the Japanese drama 'Brand', has anyone else seen that one?

Yes, I think it would be funny if the law drama touches on plagiarism and basically have the whole fashion storyline dropped into the law drama. They can even linked both the law and fashion world with a little bit of romance.

Woah... you guys are busting on Han Chae Young AND Go Ara? In the same thread, no less!!
I'll be civil about this. :) You guys are babo's. LOL. I am just kidding! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And millions of eyes agree with the proposition that Go Ara and Han Chae Young are beautiful.
Still, I didn't really think that HCY was that pretty in DGCH (something was off... was it the nose?), but I think they really tried hard to plain-jane her. If you look at her red carpet photos and her glam shots, HCY is on the short list of k-beauties, I would think. Go Ara has a different look to her than HCY, but she is also quite stunning in her own way.
To be continued on an open thread, but I can't articulate what makes a female "pretty," or "beautiful" or whatever. I just know it when I see it. Just like I can hear a song and tell you with reasonable accuracy whether it will be a pop hit. YEH, HCY, GAR - all really beautiful, but in different ways. Kim Sunah, my fav actor (male or female, sorry Binnie), is beautiful, but in slightly different way than, say, Nam Sang Mi is beautiful or Kim Haneul is beautiful...
NOW, entirely independent from that, there are certain aspects of "hot"ness that seem to be epitomized in a sub-culture of k-popular culture - aka the "racing girl" (레이싱걸). I really dislike bringing this up for obvious reasons, but for dialogue and understanding purposes, this aspect should be reviewed and understood - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmX2D-37FWM. This is another side to beauty, and its effect on guys should not be underestimated.

Interesting.... Kim Hee Sun... I have only seen her in Bichunmoo (the movie version)... she is pretty. I am not saying that Go Ara and Kim Hee Sun look alike, but don't they have similar... auras? The warmth and gentleness, softness? I can't say that I know who Moon Jung Hee is.
Han Chae Young is... something. There's really not any aspect that you could say, "oh, that's just average." I think Nell123 is right on the money in that respect. Maybe put together, it doesn't quite fit, but the overall effect is still stunning.
And given the fact that Magazine Allo is NOT dead in the water, but just postponed, I think we will be in for a REAL treat when Magazine Allo finally reaches the airwaves, to see Han Chae Young going 110% with respect makeup, style, fashion and appearance. She very well might start faddy trends, with her hair, dress and makeup. HCY had her signature phrases in DGCH, but in this drama, I think her signature "looks" might be something really to watch out for.
It will be interesting to see how k-culture will be affected by a single person, in a single drama. I predict at least TWO fads to come out of Magazine Allo, with at least ONE fad to come out of whatever it is that HCY is wearing, saying, eating, drinking, or using.
The product placement for Magazine Allo will be huge!

"There’s really not any aspect that you could say, 'oh, that’s just average.'”
Really?? I guess I just don't see it. I don't even think that she has "perfect" features that just put together the wrong way. hm...
HCY's phrases were the work of the brillliant Hong sisters, but I do agree that Allo will create fads (if it ever succeeds in airing).
Moon Jung Hee - not the best pictures...you have to see her on screen

If Magazine Allo, is as what it said/described (http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Magazine_Allo), as similar to "The Devil Wears Prada", this means that KBS got the idea/concept from the "foreign" film. So why is SBS accusing KBS of plagiarism. Is it because they've already made the first act of copying the concept of "Devil Wears Prada"?
If so, should "20th Century Fox"(the distributor), Lauren Weisberger (the writter) and Wendy Finerman (the producer) of "The Devil Wears Prada" file a case of plagiarism as well on their part against SBS for making "Style"?
