High school horror series continues with Suicide Pact
by javabeans
Check out the latest poster releases for the upcoming horror film Suicide Pact, which is the latest installment of the 여고괴담 “Horror School” (or Memento Mori) series.
The franchise has produced four films in the past decade, and with summer approaching, the fifth is set to premiere in a few weeks. The photos alone are enough to tell me I’ll be staying far, far away — but if horror-thrillers are your thing, it may be right up your alley.
The story features five high school friends dealing with different problems who swear to die together in the name of friendship — until one of them commits suicide first.
Suicide Pact opens on June 18.
Given the prevalence of suicide in the industry in recent times, one may think it’s a sensitive topic to center a horror film around, but director Lee Jong-yong explains that the suicides aren’t portrayed in a romantic light, and focuses instead on how the suicide pact is a misguided idea on the part of the students.
The horror series has a history of casting young actresses who have then gone on to great success:
- Whispering Corridors (1998), the original film, featured Park Jin-hee (War of Money) Lee Mi-yeon (Crazy for You) and Choi Kang-hee (My Sweet Seoul);
- Memento Mori (1999) starred Kim Min-sun (Portrait of a Beauty), Park Ye-jin (Queen Seon-deok), and Gong Hyo-jin (Crush and Blush);
- Wishing Stairs (2003) featured Song Ji-hyo (Jumong) and Park Han-byul (Fantasy Couple);
- Voice (2005) starred Kim Ok-bin (Thirst) and Seo Ji-hye (I Love You).
This latest installment stars another cast of young and up-and-coming actresses: Oh Yeon-seo (Our High School E.T.), Sohn Eun-seo (Humming), Song Min-jung (Don’t Go Away), and newcomer Jang Kyung-ah.

I couldn't believe the title, the plot, or the timing of the movie's release. High school kids in a suicide pact? With the suicide problem they're already having in Korea and the suicide of the ex-president, is this perverse or what?

Hi, sorry for the random question, but I was wondering - how are drama episode ratings judged? What is a good average for a (fairly successful) drama to have? And what numbers would a hugely popular drama/a flop be likely to get? Sorry - I'm just really curious and am having difficulty figuring it out.

I feel afraid just looking at the posters, I don't think I would be able to watch a second of any of these movies.. Suicide's probably not the best topic to feature right now considering all the suicides that are going on. Hopefully this movie will scare people away from suicides rather than incourage them?

I'm such a sucker for horror movies, so this is a must watch for me!
love love the posters ^^ especially the 1st one with their hair entangled together! it hints at the story of the movie (that even after death, they're all related and bound by their promise to remain together forever).

I wanna watch!!! The timing may be a little off... But I was actually thinking it could work as well as viewers discretion is heighten...
I actually saw all except Voice from this franchise... aight... looking at the cast name now, I didn't even realize who they were back in those days when I watched!!! But what strikes me most about these horror movies is that the story is so well played out and the strong female roles... And what make the deepest impression was that underneath all the scares afterall being horror movie, its the hurt and sorrow... it is oftenmost very tender... I can't explain but just very tender, Wishing Stairs had me thinking about it for days after I watched the movie...
I am hoping this will be a good one...

I get freaked out by ghosts.
I get even more freaked out by korean ghosts, you know the female ones who have dead black eyes and hair that covers most of their face, the ones who don't really talk much. We saw a few in the last episode of Hong Gil Dong of the night, and now I am a bit scared to go to bed.... I hope Hong Gil Dong can survive!

I know who else is staying away from this - ME!!
I can not stand horror movies - I get too scared. =P I guess it's because I watch everything as if it is real (which is NOT a good thing to do while watching something this scary!!) *shudders*

Oh, I will be watching this. I think Korean horror is superbly done. It's not really my genre as I'm more a fan of Sci-Fi. However, of late, Sci-Fi has become more and more gory which is probably adding to my desensitization of horror. As long as a movie doesn't straight lean toward the gratuity of slasher territory (Kruger, Friday 13th, etc), I'm ok. Hmm, I do enjoy those Chuckie movies though.

now that is the kind of movie i've been looking for. a movie that might actually scare me or give me the chills during the film. I wanna see the movie. XD i watched horror movies but they either not good or another gene then intented (i.e. its funny but its suppose to be horror) since i live in the USA they sometimes [most of the time] make bad horror movies. no wonder america makes remakes from asian movies coz they know how to make movies XD

Java, with the words you dropped, I had to cover my eyes for the long list of pictures. *I'm reading this post at 2am alone in my room.*
Call me a wimp, but I don't think the pictures are worth looking at NOW. I can always look at them later (as in broad daylight LATER!). But considering the response, I think I'll be staying away from this one.
I love horror movies but I am one who can never take Korean or Japanese ones, because I'll be sure to have nightmares later. And I'm very good at scaring myself...

is this based on a comic book? i once read a manga which has the same storyline with this movie. and the comic is creepy also in a way and it tells the story of some suicide club where all the members of it would make a pact to commit suicide together and stuff

There's nothing that gets me more excited than Korean horror movies since most of them are so deep and psychological. Some K-horror movies do not even contain a single jump-scare in them, yet can be intensely creepy and frightening.
And look at how artistically beautiful the posters are? The posters in itself are enough to make me watch this movie, and I know we shouldn't judge a movie by its poster, but I have thoroughly enjoyed 99% of K-horror movies I've seen and I have pretty much covered every single one produced since 2000.
Can't wait to see this movie and thank you JB for posting this kinda stuff here at DB ;)

normally i don't like horrors but i love korean ones, especially Death Bell =] Can't wait...but just hope they don't get too much criticism for the suicide thing (koreans/netizens tend to be very harsh >_<)

Some of the posters are too graphic for me (especially the bloody hand and the last one one on the left)
Wonder if & what this movie has an impact on Korean suicidal madness (especially in the show biz circle)

Amazingly, I'm not scared by the posters. And I'm reading this at night. And I'm a self proclaimed scardy cat who has not even seen any sort of horror movie. (Except for disney's 'haunted mansion'... but I guess that doesn't count, eh?)

"looks almost like it’s from the makers of 고사…is it? "
It only looks similar because Death Bell and the Whispering Corridors movies are all High School based, but otherwise they are very different. Death Bell kinda plays out like an American teen slasher, whereas Corridors is umm...very Korean. :)
If anything, this movie looks like it was influenced by the Japanese Horror 'Suicide Circle'.
Is the full trailer out for this yet btw? I have only seen the teaser which is really just some flashbacks of the first four movies.

OMG! I'm so looking forward to this one! "Whispering Corridors", "Memento Mori" and "Wishing Stairs" are awesome movies without equals. Haven't seen "Voice", yet, but I know it's been out for a while now.
And I agree that the posters are FANTASTIC! Love the graphics and composition!
This movie reminds me of a Japanese release titled "Jisatsu Sekuru". Must be along the same lines as that one ....
