Gu Hye-sun’s book-signing session
by javabeans
Gu Hye-sun signed copies of her novel, Tango, on the afternoon of May 9 at the Jamsil Kyobo Book Centre. The actress was 30 minutes late to arrive on the scene that day.
Gu also recently filmed a segment for KBS’s read-aloud program 낭독의 발견 (literally “read-aloud discovery”), which will air on May 12. After the reading was over, she shed some tears over being misunderstood as merely an “uljjang star” back in her early days when she was, well, mostly an uljjang star. (Gu was discovered as an internet uljjang, after which she was taken into a management company and received training as both a singer and actor, although she was encouraged more to pursue acting.)
She also revealed some of her acting notes from back in the day when she was training to be an actor, which includes her weaknesses and her ways of working through them.

i think i would not have watched BOF at all if it werent for the casting of GHS as Jandi. Yes the boys are good looking but not all of them can act. Jandi is supposed to be almost tomboyish and unpretty, totally not Joonpyo's type - something that has been reiterated throughout the drama. That said, I have also never been so hung up on an onscreen couple like Jandi and Joonpyo. Ever.

I know that those of you who do not like GHS will never change your minds no matter how much praise she may receive. Actually some of your comments are just so mean. We must remember that we are just fans and observers fom very very far distance--we do not know her truly! I personally loved her in BOF. So many people complained that she over-acted. I thoroughly enjoyed her wonderful balance between being funny and being serious. The role required both. No matter what GHS contributed tremendously to the success of BOF along with all the the other team members of BOF. I saw it twice as I was too influenced by the media and negative comments the first time. I loved it more the second time and even further appreciated GHS' acting. She is an inspiration as a person. I do not know her, but the fact that she turns her difficulties and pain to something so creative and healing through her passion for music, writing, and art, is truly remarkable and admirable. I think we can all relate to that and we all know how hard it is to do. It takes lots of determination, guts, uninhibited confrontation with one self. I thoroughly enjoyed her book. I am looking forward to her new CD. I am not a fan of her singing, especially when the variety show hosts ask her to sing. She usually do not give good performance then, I think she knows it too, She usually ends up covering her face in embarassment. But she tries though, doesn't she! She does not give up on it either. She really persues what she loves. I wish she is a little bit more passionate and uninhibited in her love scenes--She actually was better in BOF with LMH. But I think it was because LMH is much better in love scenes that it helped her to do better. That's all. Whew..

Overall I liked her in BBF but I wished she had put more emotion into her scenes/ interaction with Lee Min Ho. She seemed so reserved, never really touching him physically either. That last proposal scene, for instance - Couldn't she have shown some more happiness and excitement or at least gotten her hands out of her doctor's coat?
But I agree - she is good with comedy. That scene in BBF where she brings an apple to Jun Pyo to apologize to him was one of my favorite scenes. They were both so funny in it and the timing was great.

I tend to agree with @14 & 17.
Sorry, I think she is a nice gal in real life but ....I believe she still has room for improvement on her acting skills. She is young anyway.
I don't dislike her but I feels she has overdone it at BOF. Pure 19 was already a flop, now another....
I am not a LMH fan either but I think I enjoyed his acting more than hers. Like many others, I think the drama has gain so much hype is bec of the 4 boys...

Hello #58. I tend to disagree with you especially with your statement about PURE !9. The drama was a big hit in 2006 thru 2007 season that it was one of the 100 highest rated (viewership) Kdrama of all time with an average viewership of more than 40%, higher than BBF. I don't think BBF will be complete without Jan Di aka GHS.By the way she won the new Best Actress award in 2006 for her role as Guk Hwa in Pure 19 and another acting award for her role in King and I in 2007. Problem is, Gu Hye Sun is a 24 year old who behaves and looks like a 16 year old, bambi eyes and all. Makes her look retarded. I don't dislike her though.

I just like her, she's so simple but talented and very down to earth.
Maybe she's really lacking towards her acting capabilities but still you can see she really tries hard everything without complaining even though she faces hardship. She just loved and really dedicated towards her crafts.

I "used" to think that GHS was OA as Jandi. But then after watching the interview clip where she mentioned that her character as Jandi was supposed to be annoying/hateable. I then realized that if she annoyed other viewers because of her portayal as Jandi then she did a great job though. She just followed the script and the director. More power GHS!!!

I like GHS because she's so much different from other K actresses. She's not afraid to pursue what she wants. Instead of cashing in on BOF's popularity with CFs, other commercial projects and moving to the next movie or TV drama she's going the "self actualization' route with her book & directorial debut. Atta girl GHS pursue your dreams. As for BBF, I think she's a great actress even though she went over the top in some parts. The ratings wouldn't have been so high if not for her since she was on it 80% of the time. The F4 special when she was not there rated so much lower and I didn't even watch it. Pursue your dreams GHS but don't take too long in choosing your next project coz your fans are waiting for you.
Thanks dramabeans for featuring the book signing.

First of all, BOF is supposed to be an adaptation of a manga-so the overacting part is expected, just like in the japanese version. Secondly, the director of BOF is known for making his female leads act unnaturally silly and over the top - just like LDH in My girl. But i guess the director took notice of the criticisms (with ratings like that, i think he will concede really..) pointing to his over the top direction for jandi's role, so he tone it down. That's when the netizens appreciated GHS more. So i guess, we don't need to argue so much on why she was casted as JanDi because admit it or not..she made u cry and made u laugh and made u root for her in the end...all because she TOUCHED UR HEART as JANDI,,if not, u wouldn't be here posting and taking an interest on her works and acting right?? hehehe

get a grip people hahaha...if in truth u hated her acting so much, then why are you raving that u watched pure 19, strongest cho il woo, king and I and all her other series, and say u don't like her? I f u don't really like her..WHY do u bother watching all her series? especially pure 19- dats quite long!! hahaha funny don't u think?
My 2 cents worth,,,GHS has her own style and approach to acting. She cannot please everybody, but the fact that pure 19 and BOF rated so high is a proof of her acting chops. Some may not like her, but there are more people who like her than those who hate her..You can't say she is hated in BOF.. duh!! She was the sole female lead in BOF and it will not rate that high if people disliked her ..

She wasnt dressed to the nines because its a book signing event and she was supposed to sell the book not her looks. One thing that's admirable with GHS is she doesn't JUST Conform because she wants others to like her. SHe has her own individuality, and she is setting her mind to DOING the things she need to do to bring out all her creative energies -- which extends to writing, directing, singing, composing, playing the piano and acting. The girl is oozing with talent, and she is set to prove that TALENT is more important THAN glamor, packaging and what nots, that the korean entertainment seemed to be obsessing about.
I admire her brave spirit for daring to go against wat is expected of her and pursuing a direction that will make use of her multi-faceted talent. She may be reviving a NEW BREED of korean stars who are worthy of praise and respect....i hope.

I don't get it when some people were saying she didn't do the Jandi role well when in fact she was really funny and perfect as Jandi. I couldn't imagine anyone doing it better than her. I've also seen the other versions but I don't think nothing beats GHS as Jandi. She was just so adorable and funny that I watched Korean BOF more than a dozen times just because of her. She is someone who is more than just a pretty face. There is depth to her true character and I love how she answers interview questions. She really doesn't care if she appears perfect to others but she always answer with her heart. I just read the new interview posted at soompi. I love her even more. Goo Hye Sun sshi fighting!
