Drug scandal gets Joo Ji-hoon banned from KBS

After actor Joo Ji-hoon (Antique, Goong) was named in the recent drug scandal for recreational drug use of ecstasy and ketamine (which got the main supplier, actress Yoon Seol-hee, tossed into jail along with her financial enabler Yeh Hak-young), Joo was the center of the ensuing media frenzy. He was dropped from his latest drama and had his birthday fanmeeting in Japan canceled.

Now Joo, who may face trial for his drug use, has been banned indefinitely from appearing on broadcast station KBS “until his [legal] punishment is decided.” Naturally, this also applies to Yoon Seol-hee and Yeh Hak-young, but I think they have bigger things to worry about, such as going away to prison for many, many years for drug trafficking.

This is not the first time an entertainer has been banned because of a drug scandal; for instance, singer Jeon In-kwon and actress Go Ho-kyung received similar punishments for marijuana use last year and in 2006.

Furthermore, KBS is also banning actor Na Han-il, but his crime is a white-collar matter. Na, who was appearing on the SBS historical drama Ja Myung Go, was caught taking illegal loans of more than 10 billion won and was also suspected of bribery.

MBC and SBS are expected to follow suit with similar decisions.

--wow everyone on this site are such prudes--

See, I kind of have the same viewpoint that you do, that drugs aren't ALL THAT BAD, but you have to take into understanding the cultural differences. Because we've (or I'VE) grown up in a culture that doesn't hold such a HUGE discrimination against drugs (with all the stoner movies and even celebrities openly admitting drug use), it's become sort of a given in my world.

However, the other people who DON'T live in that world, who grew up in a completely different way, I can't look down on them for having that viewpoint. They have a valid point too. I don't think either views is completely the right way, but I can't say the way I was brought up was any better than that, and they can't say that their upbringing is better either.

I'm sure we all know extremes on both ends, the people who've done drugs and suffered and the ones who have and didn't. For example, my father, when he was younger, was a huge druggie. He was a dealer and he also did a lot of drugs himself. He told me this openly, when I was younger. He's a completely different person, now, of course. He's an elder at my church and he uses his past as an example to other younger kids who might want to do drugs. So, yeah, doing drugs doesn't necessarily make you a BAD person.

@mishane

I understand different cultures view drugs differently...but I find it so laughably hypocritical Korea's stance on drugs because of their love of alchohol

koreans drink as much if not more than any population in the world

they drink every day after work and the men get totally wasted

yet someone smokes a little weed and they're blacklisted...but if you get so drunk you throw up on everyone, people just laugh and cheer on?

that's a odd double standard

@ 53 bama

I actually kind of agree with you on that point.

Something my father and I had a discussion about, regarding the legalization of marijuana (we were both for it).

I can't really bring up a defense for that because I honestly don't see what is so bad about marijuana (and I honestly am not a weed smoker, I've smoked yes, but I'm not a daily smoker). I understand that huge amounts of it are bad for you, but huge amounts of alcohol are JUST as bad. So, yeah, I'm confused as to why weed is such a big deal to the Korean culture, but, like I was saying to my dad when we were discussing this, I guess they are sticking to the idea that marijuana is a "gateway drug". *sigh* This will just be one of those things that I can't understand.

^ legalization involves the whole weighing of 'medicinal value' vs abuse potential, and it does have abuse potential to many (not all) vs limited therapeutic value fr a clinical standpt, it's also the stigma and tonnes of politics involved. It's not just plain black/white.

He did not just smoke some weed. He took X and/or K and those r very hard to come by to be viewed as 'recreational' in Korea (correct me if I'm wrong). So there is the whole issue of intent as opposed to he just bumped into some 'candy'/uppers coz it's everywhere.

I think this whole banning actors thing being done by broadcaster is getting a little out of hand.

I agree, drug...illegal loaning....financial conflict(Park Shin Yang).....especially drug should not be encourage....but i think the most important thing to celeb is their public image....these news leak out, they already suffer enough.....why are these broadcaster trying to act like the govt.....further more, these incident has NOTHING to do with the actor's ability to o their job.

This kinda reminds me of the whole Bill Clinton impeachment attempt....so what the guy cheated on his wife, that doesn't meant he can't run the country.....

@55 MOOKIE

I agree with you with almost all of your statement.

Furthermore, from my point of view, if a country, or in a smaller scale, a company, will be lenient with taking of drugs( hard drugs or otherwise), what happens then to the rules/ regulations, or in general, the law?

Are we trying to say, it's ok just because one took an itsy-bitsy of weed, and hope that one will not try to do it again? Are we trying to say, it's ok and no big deal because taking drugs nowadays is like drinking alcohol, getting- wasted- for- that moment- then- back- to- work- the- next?

uummm, rule/regulations, laws are put up to guide us, so that we may have a better, organized, clean living, society, and life. These rules/regulations, laws that are created by the people may not be perfect and may, indeed, need to be updated... but as long as there are written rules, unless changed, we must abide by these. Right?

Some countries are conservative and strict with their views on certain rules/laws... (e.g. singapore prohibits chewing of gum)

I stand by JJH, but i do have to say he did something he shouldnt be doing.
I guess, because he is so popular and a "celeb" (at that), he was made a "sacrificial lamb", conspicuously saying, "hey peeps, no is no ok!"

JJH, fighting!!!!

@ Artemis,
"Soldiers with drug problems who operate firearms is a hell of a lot more dangerous than an actor making a movie."

LOL, true. Unless you're Dennis Oh spotted by Roy Lee on the annual "Hot" list put out by APA-UCLA, and recruited to star in installments 23~35 of The Grudge. Then give me Henney as The New Keanu until kingdom comes.

Let this be a lesson to all the future wannabe idols - No one is above the law in Korea! Drug use will destroy your career, don't let your head swell so big that you think you are untouchable. Dumb asses!

Won't be missing you, Joo Ji Hoon! You just ain't worth it, lol!

@Lucille - No, there's no record to JJH being a jerk or doing drugs on set. The original poster just mentioned that so what if he does do drugs or is a jerk. It is rather unrelated to the business of the company - acting. I simply stated a reason why they might have reservations apart from ethical matters and viewership issues.

Yes, there are examples where stars after bad behavior or drugs sunk. But others stick on. can't speak on Phelps because I'm not really into sports nor did I ever see any commercial of his even when he was at his peak, but I think the viewpoint is a little different for an athlete, who still builds on integrity. But remember 2 certain supermodels who still work? A crazy pop star who still got an album out? Many other celebs who had DUI and got caught in drugs and went to rehab and returned?

And in Lindsay's case, I think it's because A) Her movies sucked, and B) People got tired of her. Paris Hilton too sank, though I think from boredom and disgust then any outright anger about her behavior. Like I said, the entertainment industry has a quick turnover and these people didn't have any real talent.

And also, we DO love the dirt. The tabloids will keep elevating their name if we keep buying it. So to me it's very much like we're condoning it. That's my personal distaste of that trend.

I do agree that this does seem like a publicity stunt. Would've been better to just silently not hire him. Perhaps they were in some talks? I don't know.

forgive and forget ! thats the best thing!

i hope to god ppl wont keep talking about and making the guys life hell, yes he's dumb to take it in the first place but these days 50% of teenagers take drugs such as weed and you can't just cut them off and treat them like this [i know he's not a teenager...but still] NO! that makes it worse, you have to talk to them and make them understand...who knows all this bad media might make him depressed and make things worse! Imagine how he feels....he probably finding it hard to even leave his home!

Everybody makes mistakes....i bet you tons of k actors and actress's have done the same but where lucky enough not to be caught like this.

I seriously think the Korean media like to make a mountain out of a mole hill!
They might be ruining the future of a this guy!

And this is to who ever said weed is OK, NO! weed is not OK so please don't go around saying that. Weed and skunk ppl might think is small drugs and o.k to take, but that's not true small drugs, big drugs are exactly the same....THAY RUIN YOUR LIFE!

I have seen it with my own eyes, when a person gets addicted it's so hard and it's the most painful thing ever if it's someone you love...because you can't do anything for them at all except watch them going down slowly and fade in front of your eyes....you feel completely powerless and pathetic. Once your addicted, it's really hard to get off and slowly you loose everything and everyone.

So please to all ppl.....Stay Away From Drugs.

Who ever said it's o.k...just some harmless fun. Do not listen to them.

Anyway why is JJH so quite? I think he should say something about all this.

You are a very stupid.

Because of people like you actors commit suicide.

If you haven't noticed he is human and humans make mistakes. It part of life, this is how we learn.

We all make mistakes, do things we regret later. Sometimes some people don't realised there mistake in till someone points it out to them.

Also i will share this advice with you which my grandma shared with me:

"look down on someone and one day others will look down on you"

What you say to others always come back to you.

A good example why I've always known that this guy was a unprofessional conceited guy was because he left the Hong Gil Dong drama a week before the production started, thats after they had already paid for his sword training, costumes and other requirements.

JJH demanded to be paid an A-lister’s salary for his mediocre acting. At that time, he had nothing to show for except his mediocre acting in Goong and then Mawang which didn't even reach double digits in rating, yet the dude had the NERVE to demand the same talent fee as A listers who've already proven themselves for many years in the industry. Joo Ji hoon walking out of a production just like that proved to me that he has a shady character. I cant stand this arrogant, wimpy, iron defficient model.

He has been burning a lot of bridges. First with the Goong PD, then he pulled that stunt in Hong Gil Dong and now DRUGS? It's good that he got caught cause I am sure that this experience will probably humble him.

"play with fire, you'll get burn"...

tit for tat....this is all just a result of his wrong choice...the reasons he mentioned are for pleasure.....he's pleasured surely at those times he's on high....now its reality check for him......ain't we all learn the hard way?

which Mgt Agency would easily allow their talents to work with him at this point? all would be cautious of course. Its same as working..when offices requires "drug" tests...if one fails then gets kick out of the job! some talent is not enough...there are rules to be followed! break it, then face the consequence!

JJH as sacrificial lamb? funniest i've read here! He's back to painful reality after being on highs!....... spare the word "lamb" pleassssse.

Its good he has some loyal fans.... sadly, he's at his lowest point, it seems he has not much celeb friends...i have yet to read celebs bravely issuing message of support or encouragement for him. If he has "true" friends in the business...they will issue supportive statements as true friends would do.

Okay JS lets not make JJH out to be a drug addict, he did drugs on two ocassions, hardly qualifies for a junkie. We don't know why he did them, maybe life was boring or he was depressed, not that I want to bring Lee Un in to this but he did take his death pretty hard, who knows the trigger. So the baseless assumption should be kept to yourselves.

And I do think the media is making him the "sacrificial lamb", most likely its a warning to other stars, that no matter who you are, do drugs and you'll be in trouble.

Growing up in a country that hangs drug traffickers...literally....and mind you, you don't have to be in possession of too large a quantity to be labelled a trafficker...., I have been conditioned to view drugs as the ultimate 'no-no'.

Then I came to the US and all of a sudden, all my roommates and almost every fourth person in college had or is using recreational drugs. Some of them wasted their college life away but others were normal, A-students that graduated and became successful doctors, engineers, and VPs of companies.

I am not at all condoning the use of drugs. Of all the vices, drugs is probably the worst. It not only destroys lifes but has proven to kill - body, mind and soul. However, I have also come to the conclusion that those that use drugs are not always scumbags useless to society. If anything, most need only encouragement and support to turn to positive things.

So let's give JJH a break. He did admit to using even though he must know consequences will follow. I am sure he feels remorse or else he would be ranting at the press. Where is the compassion and empathy for another human being? Do we need to keep beating on a dead horse or keep squashing a bug over and over? Could you imagine being in his shoes now? I say we let it go already.

It's really difficult to "forgive and forget". It's not that I have amnesia or something and even if I do, I am sure someone will remind me... The difficult times would be for JJH to live under people's watchful eyes after he serves his legal punishment if he's ever been given a chance to return to the industry.

But if JJH really regrets and repents, people will feel it.

ku-mo-wo-yo, Samsooki. Your positive words really help; I hope JJH has a chance to read it.

I think JJH is waken. At least he didn't try to shake that off the backdoor way. You know he can try, don't you...

The Korea country may not accept him if he is changed. But you can. And I will. Any one can make a difference, however minority.

@iluvkidnappers and sonam

iluvkidnappers, the uneducated one may be you, because you failed to read my post properly. I was talking to Sumaiya and fp who reacted to my comments and talked cock with me first and acted like they owned this blog. If you're not a delusional JJH fangirl, then ignore my post. I'm specifically laughing at those lame fangirls who try to make excuses for JJH's actions by claiming that " doing drugs is no big deal, JJH should be forgiven cos he's soo talented and goodlooking" (yeah right! there's so many better lookin dudes out there who are way more talented than him, and they are FAR more humble than big headed JJH!) blah blah...and more nonsensical ones.....the most pathetic excuse that takes the cake? LOL! Those fans who claimed that he took drugs becos he was upset about Eon's death. HELLO?? Where the hell did they pull that one outta their asses?! ROFL! My sides are bursting from laughing too much from the ridiculous theories JJH fans are coming up with to salvage his broken reputation!

LOL. It's really entertaining to rile up these deluded fans who act like they are doing damage control to his image by trying to shut up the critics (which is obviously not going to work. Like, Duh! I can say whatever the hell I want... SO BITE ME!! ^__^) when the ONLY person who has single-handedly destroyed his reputation and career, is JJH himself, not people who hate on him. JJH had enjoyed lots of fame and money by being a celebrity compared with most people he was very lucky. The downside is he will ALSO be judged and scrutinized more harshly when he does ILLEGAL DRUGS. That's the way it is. If JJH cannot take the heat, get the hell out of the kitchen!

And that's all I have to say about JJH (for now). LOL. Unless my friend fp (wink wink!) shows up again, I'm bored with the JJH news already. *yawn*

He is one charismatic actor and have an amazing stage presence. I am off to watch Antique and will see what other movies he played in. Life is made of experiences that one goes through. Some never really planned. We rise and fall until we learn lessons, that make us wiser and better people. I am happy that Joo Ji Hoon keeps forging ahead, learned from his past and moving forward. I think he has a future brighter than what anyone could see. I want to learn more about him and follow his story. More power to you JJH.
