Tae-yeon is pop art
by javabeans
Kind of random, but kind of interesting.
Girls Generation (SNSD) singer Tae-yeon has been turned into a piece of pop art by Japanese artist Hideaki Kawashima.
I’m not an art person, so I can’t tell you much about Kawashima aside from the fact that his work largely incorporates ethereal representations of disembodied faces. Subversive, or just a twist on Japan’s cute culture? Can’t say for sure, but they are oddly compelling. (And creepy.)
In any case, the artist spent four months in Seoul preparing for his solo exhibition, and had been charmed by Tae-yeon’s voice when he heard her radio program. After seeing the popstarlet on television, he drew the above Tae-yeon-inspired work, titled “Helmet.”

That's creepy-cute. o.O I'm not much of an art-appreciator, but I kind of like it. Not that I'll be hanging it in my bedroom anytime soon or anything.. It's still weird. :x
PS: Yay, first!

I would imagine Tae-yeon would be pretty honoured by this. And the artwork is nice. But Hideaki Kawashima's "Night", "Tentacle" and Twist" looks a bit eerie though.

"Hideaki Kawashima’s “Night,” “Tentacle,” and “Twist”; Tae-yeon"
What's with the Japanese and TENTACLES? Sigh . . . ;)
". Subversive, or just a twist on Japan’s cute culture? "
Superflat-ish. Ever watched those mecha shows where we see enbryonic and aborted versions of what would eventually be a formed person, being or monster? Kawashima's work kinda riffs off that to explore essence of people (kinda like a person's "spirit") without categorizing factors of identity. The lack of angularity, strong colors, full lips and engorged eyes suggest a kind of hyperfemininity, but his work cannot be qualified as innocent, sexual, or aware of objectification from a 3rd paty. In other words, it lacks the usual content associated with femininty; it's a bracing detachment that expresses intuitive and sometimes primal reactions, that transcend what is me and what is you. It merely suggests that before we are created in front of (for?) other people, there is something else that it is essentially us, profoundly shapened and misshapened by the world that our clothes, language or behaviour patterns do not express.
The exaggerated upward slantness of the eyes reflects Tae Yeon's determined, stubborn nature; the unassuming flatness of the mouth reflects her lack of guile or pretension with other people, and perhaps also a lack of suspicion about the motivations of others. The almost seeweed-like "fingers" and color of her hair comments on her as a fresh ingenue, still finding roots in her life.

i love it, but it's something I'd use for just layouts, or a wall paper on my phone ^-^. it's an art piece that just...doesn't have much depth in it. lol maybe it shows the artist's obsession more than anything xD.
lol I personally don't think it's creepy wierd. tehehe. the eyes and lips are the most outstanding aspect of the drawings.
