Roller Coaster vocalist goes solo

Ooh. Interesting.

This may only interest a handful of you out there who also happen to love Roller Coaster, but this is for us fans of the laid-back, acid-jazz/lounge/groovetronica group: the voice of the band, Jo Won-sun, is finally coming out with her own solo album 17 years after her debut.

I’d been wondering when they’d come out with another album, and since I effing LOVE their music — melodically intricate, groovy, mellow, diverse — I am more than happy to hear about this. And if you don’t know them but enjoy Clazziquai, Humming Urban Stereo, Casker, and/or Fortune Cookie, you should really give them a whirl.

I also realized most of my previously posted Roller Coaster song links are now dead, so I’ve reupped and reposted them here:

Jo Won-sun first appeared on a compilation album for Sony Music in 1992, and in 1999 her band, Roller Coaster, released its first album and steadily amassed a following, at first remaining relatively underground in the rock and indie scene, then accruing more mainstream notice.

Jo wrote music and lyrics for all the music on her solo debut album (half of which were co-written with Roller Coaster guitarist Lee Sang-soon).

The album, titled “Swallow,” releases March 16, and Jo Won-sun will start making appearances on live music programs at the end of the month to promote it.

Jinu is still DJing and Lee Sang-Soon is in the Netherlands, so another album is only a distant possibility (JWS said herself the disband rumors were false, but they're virtually done unless a miracle happens. I also read somewhere contract with T-ent was long up). Which sucks. But hey, I'll take this.

Thank you for the Rollercoaster songs! I had never heard this group before but I love her voice and love the sound! I will definitely look for more by both the group and the lead singer Jo Won-Sun.

This is a bit depressing...because I feel that when lead vocalists leave bands in Korea their solo work is not as good (and this is often true in other countries' music scenes as well). Kim Yuna is not as good as Jaurim (though I still like her solo work, I find myself skipping the wispy little tracks on my ipod far more often than Jaurim songs), and I don't think Jiseon is quite as good as Loveholic. When these artists go solo they have a tendency to lose the "rock" part of pop-rock and all try to sound like Enya.

Also, when it comes to Roller Coaster, Classiquai, Humming Urban Stereo, and Casker (and I think Casker has the most soul and originality), why does this bossa nova/acid jazz sound go on and on and on? I mean, I dig it, but I have to admit I'm getting kind of tired of it. Who out there is taking the more rocking sound that Jaurim put out there and developing it? I was a big fan of Blue Dawn and thought they were going places, but sadly they disbanded after two albums...

I'm so glad you take the time to upload all these music links as well as recapping dramas because I really like a lot of the songs you post! I've never heard of Roller Coaster before, but I definitely like! Thanks for the links :D

Bonnie: I agree with you about how sad it is though that all these lead singers are leaving their bands... I love Kim Yuna, but I LOOOOVE Jaurim... if you get what I mean, haha.

They're great! Thanks for widening my music horizons Javabeans!

BTW, really enjoy your non-recap blogs. And admire your output, over and above BBF and RoI recaps! Prolific and provocative, always personable and very poetic! (darn, I was looking for a 'p' word for 'fun' but came up blank)

hmmm... I'm curious to see what it will sound like. Ever since Clazziquai I've loved the whole the acid jazz scene but it does get a bit repetitive after while. Especially since I did not enjoy Clazziquai's last CD at all! Their style has changed for the worse.

Oooooo I love Roller Coaster (I'm actually no longer "allowed" to play 숨길 수 없어요 at home after a 48 hour song-on-repeat session about a year ago). I approach this news cautiously though - I'm always wary of bandmembers branching out and trying new things (if it ain't broke....) but I guess after 17 years she deserves to do whatever she wants. And I suppose it worked out OK for Horan (although I significantly prefer Clazziquai over Ibadi)

OMFG! You're my music heroine!! I remember watching the Roller Coaster's Can’t Hide It PV a while back ago and it was so damn refreshing to hear their music, since I was tired of hearing the kpop trend at that time. I fell in love with that song, but unfortunately, I couldn't catch the name of the song nor the band since I'm not Korean (bummer). Yeah, so after all these years, it's always been in the back of my mind about that group and amazing song. THANKS for shedding the light to my aged musical puzzle!

"because I feel that when lead vocalists leave bands in Korea their solo work is not as good"

That's generally true everywhere (see Travis Morrison . . . sigh), even when the lead vocalist is basically the band (see Billy Corgan.)

"why does this bossa nova/acid jazz sound go on and on and on?"

Acid jazz (or the uhh "acid jazz" from acts like Brand New Heavies and Jamiroquai,) is groove/jam-oriented; it's not really pop song based, even though the Korean variety tends to more accessible. The real fun is a house or abstract DJ gets their hands on it, be it a Krush, or an cat off Ninja Tune or a group like Groove Armada. Clazzi's first album (with its downtempo mish-mash of deep house, minimal, bossa, and 2-step) was more like what typically comes out. KCRW has a show called Chocolate City (which is, I think, streamed online), with loads of acid jazz, deep house, and other blue note stuff.

"I was a big fan of Blue Dawn"

Have you tried her old band The The already? .

"Who out there is taking the more rocking sound that Jaurim put out there and developing it?"

If you like bubblegum oi bands, try out Crying Nut. Their earlier stuff almost sounds like Agnostic Front.

But they're really good, it's so... relaxing... (falls asleep)

Yeah, I like Crying Nut well enough...not like I like Jaurim, though! I tend to like bands like Deli Spice and My Sister's Barbershop (their later stuff, not their earlier stuff- it's whiny), and even Nell (within moderation) better than Crying Nut, though I appreciate Crying Nut's role in the music scene.

I haven't tried out The the...I should.

I got acquainted with Rollercoaster when I first heard of their song, Last Scene from their 2002 album and since then I started to like their songs, thanks also for reposting some of their songs, and I'm excited to hear Jo Won-sun's new album, I remember she sang for a drama OST before, I think for 18 vs. 29
