Kim Rae-won sings for Insadong Scandal

Actor Kim Rae-won is lending his voice to his fourth OST, this time for his upcoming movie Insadong Scandal.

He’d previously sung on the soundtracks for several projects: the 2005 film Mr. Socrates, 2006’s Sunflower (listen below), and 2008’s drama series Gourmet (listen here). The song he’ll sing is actually a cover of “Today” [오늘은], originally by the Yoon Do-hyun Band.

I don’t think Kim Rae-won is much of a singer (he even admits, “I’m not really a good singer, but I’m thankful to have this opportunity”), but there’s a refreshing down-to-earth real-ness to his voice. I don’t snark about him wanting to conquer the world as a singer because it’s clear that he’s never harbored those aspirations. Which is why I feel his singing on OSTs is more of an exercise in character work — the vocals are iffy, but the emotions are there. Although yeah, maybe I say that just because I love him.

Insadong Scandal releases at the end of April, and Kim is expected to enlist for army duty after that.

It's not like he's a bad singer, so I don't see anything wrong with it.

There have been times when I may hear an OST soundtrack, and although the singer was not really great or anything, I might like it but find out it was an actor that sang it.

Sometimes, I guess some might not like it when they know who's singing it... but sometimes if you didn't know, you might actually like it XD

the reason why actors can deliver songs albeit they don't have a great voice, is as you said, emotions are there. kim rae won is a spectacular actor, and being able to insert the emotions into the song is what actors can do best.

ppl swoon because of the emotions in songs...that's why some songs can make ppl cry. :)

Currently, my wife and I are watching My Love Patzzi, where he and Jang Nara duke it out. We also just finished The Grand Chef (a/k/a Gourmet), where he played Seung Chan, the prodigal adopted son of Oonam Jung.

I have to say that when I first started watching K-dramas, I was disappointed with the lack of strong (from acting standpoint) male leads. I mean, could the rich son of a hotel magnate / chemical company / entertainment industry / restaurant owner be any more wooden, as he tries to figure out whether he loves the orphan or single parented girl of unbelievable integrity who is spunky and bright and different from all the girls he has known in his life?

But, I re-watched MNIKSS, and I found Hyun Bin's character to be a lot mroe subtle than I thought. And then I saw Choon Hyang, and it was a relevation to watch Jae Hee outshine Han Chae Young. And we got Gong Yoo burning up DVD players in Coffee Prince...

And certainly, Kim Rae Won was very good in Gourmet. Kim Rae Won made Gourmet worth watching, even beyond the food porn.

Korean male leads .... now on par with Korean female leads?

i wont say it's that bad...i kinda love the sincerity in his voice...his voice kinda reminds me of yi sung yol, but it is the voice, not the singing...i guess if it is for the movie, then it must have been better...but i love him anyways...he's a talented guy..

I like him a lot as an actor. I'll miss him when he goes to the army.
Well, as he said... his voice isn't really in the level of a skilled singer but as he's an actor, I think he was able to bring emotion to what he sung so far (there are many professional singers that aren't able to do that). I'm curious to hear his cover of Yoon Do-hyun Band's song! :P I also don't sense that he has intention in becoming a new actor-turn-singer, this is good because I like the fact that he stays true to his real talent, which is acting. :)

it's not bad -- his voice is good! i miss him already if he goes to the military after this movie project! he's one of my fave K-actors since Love Story in Harvard, etc. The only project I passed not seeing that is -- Gourmet --- i guess i just got tired of watching dramas that dealt so much in the kitchen. I prefer him in romance or comedy, melo-dramas etc. Good Luck KRW in all your future endeavours! Thanks javabeans for sharing.

well, KRW is not a professional singer so can't be expecting any better isn't it? he didn't sing it badly anyway. it's good to have the actor to sing their own movie's song.

won't be seeing KRW for 2 years at least starting Aug 13, 2009. Gonna missed you, KRW.

Such a nice change from the soaring and frequently PIERCING falsettos of most Korean singers. He is not actually a singer...but he could be called a song stylist and they usually put a lot of emotion into the lyrics of their song. I don't know the lyrics of this song in English but I would think he is doing them justice.

Of course I greatly admire Kim Rae Won and I think he is a very fine actor. Plus he looks good....

Like several other Korean actors who lend their voices to OSTs, while not refined, he does have a nice voice. There are many famous singers out there who started out with nice voices that required years of training to attain professional status.

Kim Rae Won has an absolutely adorable personality and I enjoy his acting. I wish him well during that 2 years of compulsory military duty and hope to see him come back strong, healthy and ready to jump back into the saddle if Kdrama.

Good luck Kim Rae Won!
