Kwon Sang-woo gets an older brother
by javabeans
Musical and screen actor Song Chang-eui (Scales of Providence) is in final negotiations to appear in the upcoming Cinderella Man — as Kwon Sang-woo‘s older brother.
I’m starting to think that Cinderella Man is purely an exercise in Kwon Sang-woo’s vanity. I mean, I’ve always kinda thought that, but now it’s becoming pretty obvious. Especially as this comes on the heels of news that his love interest is Girls Generation pop singer Yoon-ah, who’s only 18 (by Western age count).
First off, as a commenter mentioned previously, the role might have suited him about eight years ago when he was still the young up-and-comer, but it’s not really a logical fit with his image now. (Struggling fashion designer switches places with an identical man who happens to be successor to a huge fashion company.)
Add to that his romantic pairing with Yoon-ah, who’s not only 14 years younger than him but whose fanbase is a whole generation younger than Kwon’s (ajummas love Kwon; their daughters love Yoon-ah). Now he’s got a baby-faced Song Chang-eui playing his hyung?
When most actors are trying to progress their body of work and advance to the next stage in their careers, Kwon Sang-woo seems to be trying to go backwards.
Kwon Sang-woo, left, playing “younger” brother to Song Chang-eui
Granted, Song isn’t THAT much younger than Kwon (three years). But Song’s always had a baby face that makes him look at least five years younger (he just turned 30). (One of his most recent projects was the film Boys Don’t Cry — and let me give you a hint, he plays one of the BOYS.)
Whereas Kwon… There’s no doubt Kwon is a good-looking man. But he’s definitely aging, and these attempts to revert to younger characters, in my opinion, only make him seem older, and desperate to cling to his youth.
Hint to Kwon Sang-woo: YOU ARE AN AJUSSHI. There is nothing wrong with that. There are some very sexy ajusshis out there, old stereotype notwithstanding. You know what makes them sexy? The fact that they embrace moving on, both physically and in their acting roles.
Cinderella Man is scheduled to take Return of Iljimae‘s Wednesday-Thursday slot on MBC when that drama ends.

lol @ you calling him an ajusshi but the truth needs to be said. There is no way in heaven/hell that Song Chang-eui could ever be his hyung. Would there be a problem if he was his dongsaeng? I don't think so. There clearly is something wrong with the casting director. I'm sure this drama will be annoying but I'll watch it nonetheless. And yes, there are some sexy ajusshi's out there. Embrace this KSW, embrace the age lol.

LOL. That's nuts - maybe they'll force him to grow facial hair to make him look older or use those stick-ons.

Jeez, it's obvious that Song Chang-eui is SOOO MUCH hotter than Kwon Sang-woo. He's a father...and an ahjussi, for goodness' sake.
My goodness. It really should be the other way around...
I'm going to watch this drama because of Chang-eui. I've always thought he's good anyway...

Wow.
I totally wasn't planning on watching, but with all the crazy casting news I think I'm going to have to tune in. This is the kind of train wreck that only comes around once in a great while.

No way, I thought you made a mistake on "older" to "younger" when I read the news... but seems like it is what is going to be!
Song is a good actor, I like him from the first drama I saw him in Wedding! He should be capable to "act" like an 'older' brother ... However their look can't lie, plus all the new about Kwon - Married + dad of a baby boy!
It just doesnt make sense!

"YOU ARE AN AJUSSHI. "
LOL LOL Preach it sister! Word on everything you said. Personally, give me an ajusshi over a boy every day, but maybe Kwon San-woo is having an early middle-age crisis and doesn't agree with me. Ah well. I'll probably watch Cinderalla man whenever I have time...and that means not soon. I have a bajillion better dramas to watch already.
There's just no way Song Chang-eui can be seen as Kwon Sang-woo’s older brother. No way.

Song Chang-hui is born in 1979 and KSW in 1976. Ok it's not htat much but still, the older brother is not the good one.
Geez!

And the casting just gets worse. song chang eui as the older brother?? thats not in the least believable, his baby face makes him look wayy younger than kwon sang woo. their roles should be reversed.

Off, is one single right word for all these things happening to him. The deviation, variance, difference or however you want to call this direction he is taking with his career is so skewed it doesn't feel right. He needed one good, solid project that will bring him back to life, to us. Cinderella Man is anything but.

I love both actors, though I must admit that it's very obvious that Song is a way much younger than Kwon in looks, a wrong move to cast him as hyung, but still I wish he accept the role so that it will be a double treat for me for them to be in one series...... but I think the blame in casting Yoon-ah as his love interest and Song as a hyung should fall to the casting director? ( or whoever is in charge) not on Kwon coz I don't think he has a say in it?? or am I wrong? whatever....still love them both eventhough their becoming an ajusshi....

I think its gonna be awkward to play a character of younger brother to a person who is in fact younger than me by years.
I think the casting of this drama is pretty messed up. I like kwon and yoon- ah but come one, 14 years gap???
I'll watch this nonetheless.

AJUSSHI!!!!!!!! LOL LOL.
I always love ajusshi, but I never interested to KSW, he just isn't my type of ajusshi.
BUT, Song is cute - and baby faced indeed.
Probably KSW's character would be someone who depressed so much in life so he looks older than his real age, while SCE's character would be as a rich hyung who gets botox treatment ( or something like that ) every month?
I mean, KSW will be the melancholic one, so SCE will be the antagonist one?

whats with the current trend - SNSD paired up with men 10+ their senior...cough....Taeyeon and Hyungdon or whtever his name is on WGM and now Yoona and Kang Woo....
i know Yoona is popular right now, but theres loads of gorgeous older actresses that could play the role too and not make me cringe while attempting to watch....its not even like Yoona looks older than her age...she looks like a baby...and now Chang-eui as his "older brother"...i loved Chang-eui in Golden Bride...really good actor.....still it doesnt make me want to watch this more

Completely agree with you on this one. The casting of Yoon-ah as his love interest did make me cringe, but I was trying to keep an open mind. Now with the casting of Song Chang-eui as the "older brother" this really is nothing but a vanity project.
Unfortunately, no one involved in this project seems to see that casting these two might make Kwon Sang-Woo look a bit ridiculous. Maybe all the lifestyle changes in less than a year (engagement, marriage, baby), have overwhelmed him so much as to affect his perspective.

I laughed so hard when I read that.
But the casting is totally throwing me off. I was curious about this show but now I don't know if it's something I would want to watch. I'm a KSW fan. I even sat through "Bad Love" (and that was pretty painful watching but I pushed through it b/c I just liked looking at KSW). But Yoona as a long interest and now Song Chang-eui as his hyung. How are they going to make that look conceivable? Will the makeup department paint on gray hairs or add in wrinkles. I don't get it.

I am not watching this show. When they decided to pair Yoonah with the lead as the love interest, it was a total turn off for me as I feel that there are much older and better actresses out there who could do the job as well/better. Now I will definitely stick to my decision, this show with the casting is getting messier and messier.

Puahahaha... "you are an ahjusshi..." kills me...
I agree there are so many smouldering hot ahjusshi out there...
The casting seems to be a bit of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button... Sorry I just had to use that coz it seems so apt? What in the world is going on?
Pictures after pictures I see these days of KSW and his wrinkles are like... so there... previously its little smiles lines/creases around his eyes, but these days his faces crunches up a bunch, granted he is still hot sexy... but aw man... he is an ahjusshi!!!

Song Chang-Eui and Han Eun-Jung are going to waste away in this trainwreck... at least if they give Yoona a more layered role rather than the wide-eyed look-cute and cry role she had in her last drama this show might be salvaged...
to see how those three interact though, is quite interesting...

what a casting.
#6,29: haha..yeah, it'd be fun to see how they interact. it'd be interesting to see how it wrecks...or work...i don't know.
but oh , ksw need to realise that he's joining ranks with the older men in the industry. I hope he will take on more character-oriented roles, to develop the nuance of all good actors. there are the growth of younger actors who are already taking character-oriented roles, so he needs to GROW faster.
btw, i read that he's acting in another show called Road No. 1 as an officer. it sounds like into the sun.

"KSW is fast becoming the Cher of his generation."
But do ajummas believe in love after love? I really don't think it's strong enough.
It looks like Han Eun Jung is being cast (as lead, suggests wiki?) in this drama too. I'm going to guess that KSW is really being paired off with her, because well Wo and Im Yoon Ah in a catfight . . . well that's rather sad.
Still love KSW. His casual arrogance is still as elegant (and funny) as it gets, and his volatility (i.e. film work) can be truly frightening. I REALLY REALLY enjoyed Bad/Cruel/Mistaken/Screwed-up/Wretched Love, and I can safely say that Joo Ran's Hair of Rage still haunts (haunts I tell ye!!) me to this day.

Indeed ... it's funny how the directors are casting YOUNGER people around KSW. Almost as if they're thinking that's gonna make KSW look younger himself. Truth is ... it'll only enhance his ahjusshi-ness.
I wasn't even gonna watch this one based on it starring KSW and Yoona (bleh), but now there's a flicker of hope with the addition of Song Chang-Eui. Ahh ... we'll see.

Oook eeeew, are there a lot of kdramas out there lately that are paring up young actresses and semi-old ajusshi's together? One of two I can take, but it seems to be getting very common..... and, i dunno, to me its unseemly!

no rule or principle that a 33-year-old can't be a pair with a 19-year young actress..
who think of "AJUSSHI" term are "sour grape"
Why do you think he didnt "moving on" but go-backward?
roling a "dual role" is a big challenge!
every actor who is facing acting challenge is MOVING ON.

Are they majing fun of us, how come Song is KSW hyung, u can see the difference in age even if u don't know how old both of them, but come on what kind of drama the different age between both lead is 14 years & the hyung is actually younger than his older brother..
I think they need to make song the lead actor with Yoona they'll make a cute couple..

"no rule or principle that a 33-year-old can’t be a pair with a 19-year young actress.."
Extreme age differences don't bother me anymore. If 24-year old Hyun Bin can be paired off with 12-year old Go Ju Yun (ah Snow Queen, how I love thee! :D ), anything is possible really.
Lee Yeon Hee has been paired off older guys for years. Yooh Kye Sang and Go Ah Ra were 12 years apart. I'm sure Song Seung Heon is getting his agent to cast him opposite a Wonder Girl or better yet Seo Shin Ae of Thank You.
