Kang Ji-hwan joins the telecinema experiment

Based on the recent news, it seems this whole Japan-Korea joint production “telecinema” project is finally kicking into high gear.

Despite some actors’ names being floated around as participating in various segments of the project (such as Han Hyo-joo, Lee Soo-kyung, Cha In-pyo, Kim Sun-ah, Kim Haneul), I wasn’t really interested until this latest one announcing my Kang Ji-hwan‘s involvement.

Yay! And yet, also boooooo — because it sounds like it may possibly end up really lame. Still, hope remains alive as long as he gets to show his acting chops, unoriginal story notwithstanding.

As was announced last year, the two-country telecinema collaboration pairs famous kdrama directors and producers with top Japanese drama scriptwriters, featuring a cast of Hallyu stars. The project is an experimentation in format, because it will be released both theatrically and on television. The TV broadcasts will be shown simultaneously in Korea (on SBS) and Japan.

Each individual segment will comprise 120 minutes, to be first shown in cinemas (they’ll release sometime before September), followed by television airings sometime after September. The segments will be broken into two hourlong “episodes” when shown on television.

Hero Jaejoong, Han Hyo-joo

  1. “Heaven’s Postman” [천국의 우편배달부]

This was the first segment to be revealed last year, and announced DBSK pop singer Hero Jaejoong‘s acting debut opposite fresh-faced Han Hyo-joo (Iljimae).

In brief, the plot has Jaejoong in the “quirky” titular role, who delivers messages between this world and the afterworld.

Heaven’s Postman is directed by PD Lee Hyung-min (I’m Sorry, I Love You), and penned by Beautiful Life writer Kitakawa Eriko; it is done filming and currently in post-production.
  2.

    Kang Ji-hwan, Lee Jia

  3. “The Relationship Between Faces, Hearts, and Love” [얼굴과 마음과 사랑의 관계]

This is Kang Ji-hwan‘s segment, co-starring Lee Jia (nooooo!).

(I don’t dislike Lee Jia. She’s all right. But I don’t understand why she keeps getting cast opposite actors who are light-years ahead of her in experience and ability — Kim Myung-min in Beethoven Virus, Bae Yong-joon in Legend, and now Kang? I want to know who she’s related to.)

This segment will be directed by Lee Jang-soo (of kdramas Love Story in Harvard, Stairway to Heaven) and written by Ooishi Shizuka (of jdramas Four Lies/Yottsu no Uso and First Love).

Kang Ji-hwan plays a character who suffers brain injury in an accident, which gives him odd visions that make him see ugly women as beautiful, and vice versa (uh, Shallow Hal anyone?). Lee Jia plays two roles — one (or perhaps both?) falls in love with Kang’s character in this “comic melodrama.”

  4. Kim Haneul, Cha In-pyo

  5. “Paradise” [낙원]

The same director from the above project (Lee Jang-soo) will also take on Paradise with writer Okada Yoshikazu (You’re My Madonna/Boku dake no Madonna). This has cast Kim Haneul (On Air) as its female lead, but is currently still casting its lead actor.
  6.

  7. “A Stone’s Dream” [돌맹이의 꿈]

Jang Yong-woo (1999 drama Boss) collaborates with Nakazono Miho (Anego) in this segment starring Cha In-pyo (Crossing) and Kim Hyo-jin (Happiness).

(The production made the specific decision to employ actors who either already have overseas recognition or the potential for it. It’s clear they’re attempting to cover their bases by casting youngsters like Hero Jaejoong, while also engaging some old-school Hallyu faces who enjoy long-standing popularity in countries like Japan; Cha In-pyo and Ahn Jae-wook are two prime examples.)
  8.

    Lee Soo-kyung, Ahn Jae-wook, Kang Hye-jung

  9. “Triangle” [트라이 앵글]

Drama PD Ji Young-soo (Oh Pil-seung, Bong Soon-young) works with scriptwriter Ozaki Masaya for Triangle.

In this piece, Lee Soo-kyung (Romantic Island) displays her usual clean and bright image as a widow who is left a huge amount of money and a work of art. Tablo’s newly revealed girlfriend Kang Hye-jung (Herb, Oldboy) plays a detective who suspects Ahn Jae-wook (I Love You) of bank robbery, and a love triangle ensues. (Naturally.)
  10.

  11. “19 Years Old” [19세]

Director Hwang In-roi of Return of Iljimae and Goong now pairs with White Tower (Japanese version) writer Inoue Yumiko in 19 Years Old, for which Hwang brings back Sandara Park (whom he recently cast for an episode of Return of Iljimae). Her costar is currently still being cast.
  12.

    Kim Sun-ah, Bae Soo-bin

  13. “After the Wedding Ceremony” [결혼식후에]

PD Kim Yoon-chul, the director of My Name Is Kim Sam-soon and Que Sera Sera, brings back his Sam-soon, Kim Sun-ah. She is cast alongside Shin Sung-woo (Secret of Keke Island) and Bae Soo-bin (Painter of the Wind) in After the Wedding Ceremony. This part is written by Yokota Rie of the Gokusen series.
  14.

  15. [Untitled project]

The World We Live In‘s PD Pyo Min-su works with writer Nojima Shinji (Pride) in a currently untitled project which is still casting.

  16. [Possibly TBD?]

And, finally, one or two more segments may follow; the entire project aims to have nine complete sections to its name, with a possibility of a tenth.

I just rewatched the first 3 episodes of Hong Gil Dong last night and Kang Ji Hwan is just great...although this upcoming drama or what you call it episode that he'll play sounds a bit odd and comedic? I think it'll fun watching him portray that character with his impressive acting skills

I wanna see Heaven's postman as well...haven't seen Han Hyo Joo act since Spring waltz

Pyo Min-su the PD of In-soon is Pretty and Nojima Shinji the writer of Pride, this combo is very very promising. Hope the cast of this one will be good.

From the 7 others drama yet, I don't like any pairing :/

So.. theres 9 2/hr segments...?

Either way, I'm too hyped for this.
The funny thing is when you get directors for famous sad stories, and writers for comic dramas.

The best thing is, some of my favorite directors and writeres are in this PLUS my favorite actors (and yes, most are REAL actors... the oh-so-goood actors *dreams on in happiness*)

So far, I'm most waiting for “Paradise” [낙원] cause I like Kim Haneul and Cha In Pyo as the leads~~~
Some other pairings were a bit eh... (Like the one in Sandara Park... was happy about the pd/writer thing than went o.O when I read Sandara Park's name. I dont hate her, but it made me less hyped :/)

I'm not too soled on HHJ pretty girl but she did not move me in anyway for spring waltz or iljimae. Hero I don't know love him and DBSK but can he act that's the question. Both of them are pretty, fresh faces but I don't care when I watch something I want to see two actor/actress that can make me feel, instead of me seeing just two big names play a part and reciting lines.

Not trying to be negative it's not like I won't watch it I just wanna see if they can live up to the PD's and scriptwriters and if they do good for them.

"which gives him odd visions that make him see ugly women as beautiful, and vice versa" I couldn't help burst out laughing after reading that. I can totally see kang ji hwan acting in this. hahahaha So it's only 120 minutes long? So basically, a really long movie. I'm not much of an Lee Ji Ah fan. Actually, I think she's a terrible actress but as long I get to see my Jihwan I'll be okay.

"I’m not too soled on HHJ pretty girl but she did not move me in anyway for spring waltz or iljimae. "

Her film work is better. Han Hyo Joo was good in Ride Away, and very good in Ad-lib Night, and her line deliveries are cleaner (and slightly more "blue-blooded") than her peers. She reminds me of a young Kim Ji Soo, who in the 90s was viewed as kinda bland/distant and often disappearing opposite more extroverted actors. Ji Soo got really good when she switched to a more internal, simmering kind of style. And Hyo Joo's sensibilities are in that vein too. Anyway, her kissing scene with Hero has already sparked some buzz from the DBSK following. Hopefully they don't throw a stink bomb at her. :D

"(I don’t dislike Lee Jia. She’s all right. But I don’t understand why she keeps getting cast opposite actors who are light-years ahead of her in experience and ability"

If I turned off the audio, Lee Jia would seem like a J-drama actress to me. The broad comedic bits. The mugging of the camera. The relentless cheerfulness. The use of her arms. I actually wonder whether she's a closet otaku (lolivisualkeijpunkotaku?) because her comedic mannerisms are so eerily in sync with J-drama.

Big-time focus on old-school screenwriters associated with the mythical "Golden Era of J-drama." This was the era of J-drama when Japan started moving away from romance-based trendies and toward subject-oriented dramas. Also, this was the same era when renzokus/romances evolves from soap-style plots and started taking influences from American TV workplace dramas and dramedies like St Elsewhere, LA Law, 30-something, NYPD Blue, My So-called Life, etc.

This has a lot of upside (esp. if you like Alone in Love or Noh Hee Kyung dramas, which are spiritually close to J-dramas), as long as the J-drama writers don't try to do what they *think* should be a Korean comedy or melodrama (see Rondo or Tokyo Wankei.)

"The World We Live In’s PD Pyo Min-su works with writer Nojima Shinji (Pride) in a currently untitled project which is still casting. "

As a side note: Shinji was among the leading screenwriters that signalled J-drama's transition away from the trendy renzoku genre. Shinji wrote last year's "Bara No Nai Jay Hanaya", which was the best Getsu 9 in 5 years. This could be seriously awesome.

"This part is written by Yokota Rie of the Gokusen series. "

Yokota Rie mostly does comedies, but she also wrote the adaptation for 1 Litre of Tears. A lot of Kim Sun Ah's comedic mannerisms translate well to Japanese slapstick, so this would be a dream come true.

"Director Hwang In-roi of Return of Iljimae and Goong now pairs with White Tower (Japanese version) writer Inoue Yumiko in 19 Years Old, "

This could be the best project among the lot, depending on how much they let Inoue Yumiko do. Being that this is a 120-minute movie, this is essentially a tanpatsu. She's the go-to person for adaptations, and tanpatsus is where Yumiko really has her fun. I'd love her to do an adaptation of Wuthering Heights in a mall or something.

ack! belleza, too many japanese words i don't understand =(
i'll look them up later.

so these are all separate movies/dramas with no theme that encompasses them except for the fact that they're collaborations right? and why so many?! and why aren't they using any japanese stars for these projects? would that make it too confusing? or too much like past collaborations (i can't think of any off the top of my head, only tree of heaven and the one with lee junki)?

i have to say i'm looking forward to Yokota Rie's work because i love Gokusen as well as Kang Ji hwan's acting too!

I think she's a competent actress...she was good in Legend, but didn't really perform that well in BV.

The only reason I'm looking forward to this is Kang Ji Hwan, my loveeeeee..
It's gonna be hilarious seeing him play a-similar-to-Jack-Black character (in Shallow Hal)..

"? and why so many?! and why aren’t they using any japanese stars for these projects?"

They're trying to market these hallyu products for okasans. (And yes the target for DBSK and SuJu in Japan are 40-60 year old house wives and grandmums . . . .) This is more obvious when you consider that the majority of the selected J-drama screenwriters did most of their work in the late 90s or are associated with Kimutaku dramas. The basic idea goes that Korean melodramas are vaguely reminiscent of the early-late 90s trendies that okasans grew up and loved. So why not bring back the original writers of your favorite dramas and have them give it to you "The Right Way"? :D This may sound rather uhh cynical, but Japanese TV is very balkanized now (the fact that Kimura Takuya's last drama didn't win the ratings war makes me think an era really has passed.)

In any case, this is a fun opportunity. I'm actually disappointed they didn't pair Keiko up with Kang Ji Hwan to redo Beautiful Life, say with the genders switched. And it would be lovely if Asano Taeko joined this troupe.

I loved Lee Jia in TWSSG [except the last few episodes where she seemed to be have been body-snatched]. But I do wonder how she managed to get these roles opposite KMM and KJH. I guess that's the power of BYJ!

love the idea of japanese writers - there should be a lot of refreshing perspectives- even though the storylines- well what we know of them so far- don't sound too interesting now.

I think Yonsama's agency Boundaries of Forest specializes in marketing to Japan. Lee Ji Ah, So Ji Sup, Lee Na Young. Even Park Ye Jin was slated to do a remake of Dragon Zakura. And they've done a really great job promoting the careers of their artists. Just look at Ye Jin's recent wins.

Hum, I think Lee Ji Ah has got a lot to give, she's not awesome but she has got talent. I think she didn't fit with Kim Myung Min charisma since his character was "strange", unexpected whereas her character couldn't make her give her best.
But she really fit with Yon-sama charisma, huuuuum, and I think she'll fit with Kang Ji Hwan too ^^'
But nice to see Kang Ji Hwan, i can't get enough of him *_*

First we have Director Hwang In-Roi and writer Inoue Yumiko = awesome pairing. Hwang In-Roi is an awesome director and I love Inoue Yumiko's works. As much as I like Top and Seungri, they sort of killed it for me...
With such a pairing of directer/writer, it would have been perfect if we got a better cast with actual acting experience -_-
