Unstoppable High Kick ponders Season 2
by javabeans
Apparently the folks at MBC had been looking to revisit their hit family sitcom from 2006-07, Unstoppable High Kick, according to some reports. However, an MBC rep stated on the 16th that a Season 2 is looking unlikely. My question is: Was anybody expecting one?
The show had pulled in high ratings, and though it was built around three generations of one family, the new faces made it particularly popular with the young set. I had heard they were considering making it into a High Kick movie, but that didn’t work out.
The rep explained that while they’d like to make a Season 2, the greatest difficulty would be in reassembling its cast. The older actors would probably be easier to get back (Lee Soon-jae, Na Mun-hee, Jung Jun-ha, Park Hae-mi), but one crucial leg of the love triangle in the middle generation (and youngest generation), Seo Min-jung, got married, had a baby, and moved to the States.
And then there are the youngsters, who were all unknowns back then and now all budding stars in their own right. (By the way, if you’re a new fan of Kim Bum, you’ve gotta see how adorable he is in High Kick, particularly because he and Kim Hye-sung love each other — they’re best friends — so unabashedly it’s a scream. The characters are both straight, but their bro-love is played up for laughs.) For instance:
(I took this fanmade vid from youtube; credits and thanks to shykiwi1132.)
A quick rundown of the young stars now: Jung Il-woo is headlining his own drama, Return of Iljimae. Kim Bum is experiencing a fresh wave of popularity for Boys Before Flowers. Park Min-young is about to kick off her new drama, Princess Ja-myung. And Kim Hye-sung has been busy with film work and a role in Kingdom of the Wind.
It’s possible that PD Kim Byung-wook will helm a new sitcom instead, though the MBC rep didn’t completely rule out the possibility of a High Kick 2. But really, two years after it shot to popularity, is anybody thinking about the show anymore?

The fanvid makes me think of J.D. and Turk from Scrubs. They're so close, Carla had a nightmare they ran away together. LOL
I admit I didn't get past the first episode of this show--though how I wanted to! I couldn't really stand the older cast, particularly the adult love triangle--at least I assume there was one, with the gloomy looking man and the teacher and Shinji's character. None of the adults seemed like 3-dimensional characters with whom I could sympathize, for shame.
I kept forwarding through their parts to watch the kids segments instead which doesn't make for an enjoyable time when you're watching streaming video...
Anyway, random announcements ftw.
(Sorry for all this rambling, pulled an all-nighter last night ^_^ Bet you couldn't tell.)

Boe, I totally agree. High Kick should be watched with the fast-forward button. The grandparents were annoying, the mom was annoying, the dad was good-natured but kinda pointless. In the adult love triangle, I hated Choi Min-yong (the "gloomy looking man" you mentioned) so his triangle with Shinji and Seo Min-jung was a bore.
On the other hand, the kids were a lot of fun, and yeah, I admit my favorite part was the somewhat inappropriate dynamic between the teacher and Yun-ho (Jung Il-woo), since he played 17 and she played 27.
I wish they'd release an edited version that only showed the kids/school story (which would cut the super-long series down to a fun, bite-size amount).

The grandparents: Oy. They felt like caricatures of caricatures of stereotypes of old people. Choi Min-yong (Mr. Gloomy--he looked seeeriously put out/upon even when he was just standing there watching others talk -_-) definitely didn't win me over. He was whiny, petulant...the list goes on. Shinji's character was kind of annoying but mostly forgettable, I don't recall her in a scene without the grandparents or Choi Min-yong (ugh, them again, fast forward).
The brothers were adorable--I had a good laugh when those boys aiming for Jung Il-woo's character decided to get to him through his brother only to find the brothers weren't particularly brotherly. I too was intrigued by the hint of a relationship between Seo Min-jung and Jung Il-woo when I heard there was that angle. When I watch shows where the love lines are hinted at fairly early, I tend to pair them up with who I think would do them more good and Yun-ho, I thought, would benefit from some guidance (but oh, what guidance lol). Plus, the very idea reminded me of Biscuit Teacher and Star Candy; the appropriate relationship may be with the man her age, but the right one is with her student. Right, in this case, to mean the one that brings out the best in both partners. Not to mention all that lurve. /end tangent.
Edited version, please! I'd eat that up.
With a spoon.

Heh, the pair in that video share more lovey-dovey moments than the couples in romantic dramas. Kim Bum is truly super adorable!

I love the bromance in this series, but that is pretty much it. I mean the story/plot really go nowhere. I don't like sitcoms very much especially when I don't really get the Korean comedy style.
P.S. The bromance reminds me of Shawn and Cory in Boy meets World. NOW THAT was one hilarious sitcom I watched since young.

Season 2 is an awesome idea. It might not seem practicle due to minjung leaving and the "new faces" being not so new and a hot commodity right now but using the popularity of the past season to create a new high kick would draw in some viewers looking for that familiar funny style. Anyone remember the nonstop series? I'm sure a few of the actors and actresses would return to the show that made them so popular to give it another run. Well atleast i hope :) You can always dream

I am hoping for a 2nd season actually.
I find the show to be extremely funny. I have some characters that I don't fancy like the grandfather who took the grandmother for granted. Or the mum whom I find to be so annoying. And Kang Yoomin's character.
But the story is very light and heartwarming I can't help but enjoy it immensely especially after finishing an uphill task.. What a stress reliever.. Another sitcom with similar comedic atmosphere is Unstoppable Marriage. It is really hilarious..
My only regret is the lack of subs. If they had a dvd with english subs, I'd definitely buy it..

there are a lot of hugging maybe because it's the compilation of Kim Bum and Kim HyeSung tribute from episode 1 to 100++
if you watch it per episode slowly, you won't be finding them hugging each other so frequently...
it's true about the fast forwarding, i am just focusing on the youngster especially the love-line between Jung Il-Woo and the female teacher - that's what keep me watching the sitcom ^^
i have been attracted to Il-woo from the episode where nothing that he did was successful and his father tried to help him but in no fortune - that episode made me cry especially when he called his father "appa, appa" for help T-T
and now come to the episode where he was sweet talking with his uncle at the school - the behind the scene is so funny ^^ ( i think it's episode 40+)
i have to agree that the youngster in this sitcom attracting me to keep watching but i found that some episodes about the older people were interesting too :)
