The secret behind the melo queen’s tears
by javabeans
If you’re watching A Star’s Lover, you’ll notice that “melodrama queen” Choi Ji-woo cries A LOT in it. At least once an episode, and sometimes more. So much, in fact, that viewers have picked up on a peculiar trait of the actress’s crying scenes: The tears always start with the left eye.
A representative from Choi’s management company confirmed this particular habit, saying that nine times out of ten, she cries from the left eye first, then the right.
But she’s not the only one on the Star’s Lover set with a crying quirk: Cha Ye-ryun, who plays Eun-young, has lately also been shedding lots of tears after her character was dumped. In Cha’s case, whenever she cries, she lets trickle two streams of tears from each eye, for a total of four rivulets.
Also, the actress playing Yoo Ji-tae’s sickly sister Yuri, Shin Min-hee, is said to be so immersed in her character’s emotions that she often cries real tears during script rehearsals. Shin requires some time to recover after her scenes, so if NGs occur (outtakes), she needs time to prepare for a second go. However, ever the pro, Choi Ji-woo is ready to go immediately, in contrast to some actresses who keep the crew waiting for hours while they muster up the emotions. They don’t call Choi the Queen of Tears for nuthin’.
At first, I thought this was a silly thing to notice — but looking through all my screencaps of the show, IT’S TOTALLY TRUE. I find this hilarious.

How is it that such a very promising drama with one of my all time fav actors YJT get stuck in this typical, contrived plotline mess. Gahh!
Although i have to say that the viewers/netziens are very observant LOL thanks Javabeans for posting this!

I have a feeling YJT's wondering the same thing! I was going to watch this for him but I better not. It's going to make me depressed. I wish KSW from the sad sad story would come and ride off with the leading lady. Wouldn't that be great?

Nine out of ten? Did they count each crying scene and actually calculate the percentage?

@ Winnie....it's just a way of speech...
but i have never notice that before....interesting....it must takes many years of practice to cry on cue...or do they actually teach this in acting class?

I think most people find it difficult to be able to cry on cue. While others see the "crying" as boring or annoying, I see it as talent. If you don't believe me, give yourself 5 minutes and see if you can shed tears rolling down your cheeks.

LOL! The last few episodes have been so d.e.a.d boring plot-wise you can't blame viewers for focusing instead on the increased crying scenes of ms Choi and how her tear ducts operate. :)
And here I was at the beginning thinking, wow - no more trademark CJW weepiness in this drama. Spoke too soon, I guess.
It's either that, or focusing on how short and insipid that Yonsama dude is.
Lordy, Lee Ma-Ri has spent all those years fixating on ~ this guy?!
As for Eun-Young .... nevermind her hair-style change. She can go bald for all I care. The irritant should NOT even still be in the plot by now.
How about having her end up with Byung-Joon The Idiot?

I have to say, it's because of your great recaps that made me curious enough to start watching this one. So I appreciate them greatly especially when I think it's going too slow but want to know what happened. I'm only on episode 4 and I think it's going too slow. A lot of it is like you said, interesting story, but predictable plot advancements, too much going back and forth between the lead couple, etc. At first I thought it was like Notting Hill too, although knowing it's a kdrama it'd have to be more complicated and dragged than that, with the evil mom and sugar daddy manager. I'm still interested in seeing the ending, if I ever see up to that point, but I don't think I'm missing out on much if I just read your fun recaps.
The Philip Choi aka BYJ look-alike.... I agree with people's objection to this character. I see the parody here, but are they actually serious about attracting Japanese viewers or Winter Sonata fans with this stunt or is this just for fun?

Javabeans - This phenonmenon exhibited in Choi Ji Woo's case has already been noticed before by netizens and various segments on entertainment shows where the majority of the crying scenes done by actors/actresses start from the left eye instead of the right eye. They supposedly say that if you start tearing from your left eye that you're acting, and when you start tearing from your right eye then you're really crying (not acting).
Just to add, I think Moon Geun Young is also really deserved of the Queen of Tears title. Just watching her cry on cue and having a hard time recuperating in the NGs is very heart wrenching, especially the ones from her last drama Painter of the Wind.

When articulated and put into words, these sound like a stalker's notes, hahaha. Netizens and viewers are an observational bunch.

Learning how to cry well is an artform in and of itself. If you don't want to have a runny nose or sniff every few seconds you have to control your breathing and swallow accordingly.
You can also control when you release tears versus just letting your eyes water. By adjusting the tilt of your head you can control where the tears fall as well. Crying is serious bidness! Acting business that is. :-)
You should also blow your nose between scenes if possible. Otherwise, you can get an upset tummy from the mucus buildup.

your blog entry is way too interesting than watching the real act itself. your words put me to imagine how soon the director says cut and the next second CJW's tear roll up again for next take!

Isn't there a stick they use sometimes on the eyelids to induce tears? And how about the guys? My favorite is Jung Tae-woo, champion crier, who almost always cries from the right eye first. When you've seen the guy's reruns as much as I have you notice these important things. lol

What a funny observation!! And YES Choi Ji Woo is the Crying Queen of all dramas. I mean how much water does she need to drink to have tears in every scene. Not watching the show though but this post made my day.

well i believe them..im sure she got the crying down to the tee because she has a lot of experience especially in stairway to heaven where she cries everytime the music cues in.. she cried so well that instead of me crying my heart out in the scenes i found myself laughing because i already anticipated that shes going to cry every time i hear the music..

CJW's crying in Star's Lover is nothing like her wailing and bawling in Stairway to Heaven and Winter Sonata. In SL, her cry is quiet, well controlled and beautifully done that it actually moves you. I don't feel like she overdid the crying scene like Eun Yung character.
