Raise a glass to Terroir

Are you watching SBS’s new Monday-Thursday drama Terroir?

I admit not being that captivated after catching a bit of the first episode, but I don’t think I’ve seen enough yet to give it a fair chance. No doubt SBS is looking to re-create the success of Gourmet — first with the just-ended Tazza (since both were based on popular manhwas), and now with Terroir (since both are food-related. Or at least gastronomy-related).

After filming in France, the production is back on Korean soil. The story takes place around a restaurant called “Terroir” and pits a cheerful specialist in Korean traditional wines (Han Hye-jin) against a cold, haughty connoisseur of French wines (Kim Joo-hyuk). Classic conflict, or trite setup?

Although Tazza, the series preceding Terroir, was considered a modestly successful series (from a commercial standpoint), it did not hit Gourmet‘s high numbers. Something tells me Terroir won’t be able to, either. Its ratings were a disappointment, with Episode 1 bringing in a 6.4% — still higher than The World They Live In, but a lot lower than Tazza‘s 18.4% finish.

Episode 2 did a bit better, rising to 7.2%. (In contrast, competitor East of Eden pulled in a 26.9% and a 27.2% this week, while World managed a 6.5% and a 6.1%.)

And while we’re talking about Gourmet, I see two main advantages Gourmet has over Terroir:

(1) Food trumps wine. By this I mean that relating food to other, broader themes and issues (as I tended to ramble on about in my Gourmet recaps) is feasible in a way that it isn’t with wine. Plus, food porn is much more engaging than listening to characters gush over wine, since wine pretty much always looks the same.

(2) Kim Rae-won totally wins over Han Hye-jin. I don’t have strong feelings about Han, but I’ve never really felt drawn to her performances, and she seems to be really playing up the cute, “spunky” image here, which feels kinda forced. In contrast, Kim Rae-won is such a strong, natural actor.

But that’s just my preliminary stance. Must watch more of Terroir to get a better feel for what it’s doing.

I'm probably not going to watch this. Unless, of course, I hear great things about it. The first 4 episodes of Gourmet bored me, even with all the food porn. And yeah, looking at and hearing characters talk about wine is even more *yawn*.

But..ooh! Pretty pictures.

I kinda enjoyed the first episode of Terroir, tho it wasn't as engaging as Gourmet's pilot episode. Altho it's a bit cliche, with the rich guy-poor girl stereotype, main guy bumping into a the main girl who just got dumped..i.e. all the Full House/My Girl -type of Kdrama stereotypes.. you guys know it... I enjoyed the nice and good "feel" to the drama, plus the French scenery was just a PLUS..hehehhe...

I don't have a single clue about the wine names and stuff in the drama, but I have decided to follow this, for the sake well.. of the romance? Ermm.. I know I'm lame, but I'm just a die-hard romance sucker...=P

I agree that Han Hye Jin was OTT in the first episode. There were several eye-popping moments which made me wanna pinch her. But overall, I just loved her frankness and live in the moment-kind of attitude.. so far she hasn't annoyed me yet (what with her OTT acting, I'm sure it irked a lot of ppl...) I hope I get to see more depth in her acting soon.. ^^

And lastly, Kim Joo Hyuk's just <3333 in here.. the other guy too... XP

I kind of liked the first episode. Han reminded me of Lee Da Hae in My Girl (ditsy and cute) and Kim Joo Hyuk is one of my favourite male actors. The chemistry works for me (especially that kiss!), and so far I like what I've seen. I also like the jazz music in the background.

KJH's french was also impressive as it is is definitely better than mine's.

woa, seems many people will pass on this?
I never get interested on Gourmet ( don't like KRW much ) but I love Han Hye Jin! So I was looking forward to see this although that I know nothing about wine.
Now, I'll just wait and see around some more time, to decide whether I'm going to follow this.

On the other note, what new drama that you'll recommend, Javabeans? Lately Kdramas had disappointed me..:(

Not interested in this in the least bit and in these pics she makes him so old. A show about wine doesn't strike me as entertaining.

Aww...well I'm watching it also ! Watching because of Han Hye Jin, since I've never seen the other 2 actors and the actress before. Loved her from Jumong and Be Strong, Geum-soon!

I enjoyed the first 2 episodes of Terroir, while the first 2 episodes of Worlds within bored me...and I gave up after that.

I know absolutely nothing about wine too, but all the scenery shots are beautiful and breath taking!

I've seen Gourmet , and enjoyed watching it!

I've been so used to watching Han Hye Jin as So Seo Noh in Jumong that I forgot just how mediocre of an actress she is outside of sageuks.

It's so weird to see how far Gi Tae Young has come along since White Tower.

Anyways, I'm going to keep watching for now.

EP 1 actually had me want to watch EP 2, which I finished even though the subs were only halfway done for it. And now I have several questions I would love to have answered...
1. How does Tae-min (or rather his Uncle) have deed to Woo-ju's grandpa's business/home?

2. The guy who works for Tae-min's grandpa, why was he so depressed in EP 2 that he started the smoke detector and thus the sprinklers, after taking a look at a photo in Tae-min's bedroom, and making a phone call?

3. And why doesn't Tae-min's girlfriend want to know more about her birth mother?

I also have to say that the guy who Tae-min worked for (the one who wanted the Meyer 1945) got what he deserved.

Hi creidesca!
I can answer the first 2 questions~
1. How does Tae-min (or rather his Uncle) have deed to Woo-ju’s grandpa’s business/home?
Because Tae-min's uncle was an old customer of Woo Joo's grandfather. Woo-Ju's Grandpa couldn't afford to pay Woo Joo's grandmother's hospital bills, therefore he took out private loans. Thus, Jung Tae helped Woo Joo's grandfather financially. Jung Tae willed the property to Tae Min in the hope that he will be able to do what he wants.

2. The guy who works for Tae-min’s grandpa, why was he so depressed in EP 2 that he started the smoke detector and thus the sprinklers, after taking a look at a photo in Tae-min’s bedroom, and making a phone call?
Jo-Yi (his name), after he saw the photo in Tae-min’s bedroom, he called Tae Min and left a voice message confessing and apologizing, because he is the one who caused the fire that killed Tae Min's parents. He had only tried to light candles on Tae Min's birthday cake, which caused the fire to start.
I think that's why Jo-Yi wants to make sure the sprinkler systems in buildings constructed by Hankang Construction works properly.

3. And why doesn’t Tae-min’s girlfriend want to know more about her birth mother?
I don't know, probably we'll find more about it as we watch the upcoming episodes~ ^^

I've never seen a single episode yet, and I heard comments on HHJ's acting going overboard...I think I must see the drama first since I always liked Han Hye-jin's acting, and it's about wine, I should take a look at this one

Yeah I agree. I was kinda dragged through the first episode as well. The pace just isn't right for me, at least up till now. I feel that Han Hye Jin is going over-exaggerating with her role, to the point which I think she is like totally crazy. But I will still continue watching for a while more before deciding. =)

omg 2 of my favorite k-bloggers (coolsmurf and hanfever) have posted comments here! dramabeans has really become a mecca for all the k-addicts out there :) Now I'm just hoping for popseoul to submit their comment....

As for Terroir....I won't be watching it that's for sure. How is it possible to make something about wine interesting for a few moments let alone 20 episodes?!

i second the motion with the rest of you here, i'm just tired of seeing dramas related to gourmets albeit i love Korean food & food period. I just got bored watching some dramas with this kind of storyline, my very first one (no offence to fans of this drama & I am a big fan of Ji Jin Hee) was Jewel in the Palace, first few episodes I just loved but when it got to so many intrigues about who's cooking for who & one dish after another with their competition etc. I just had to give it up. I went up to epis 35 & now I loaned it to a friend cause I couldn't hack it anymore! I love Kim Rae Won & looked f/ward to seeing him again after so long, but I even pass seeing Gourmet! I recently just finished I Really Really Like You, this one isn't so bad in terms of having some cooking on the sides cause it was a good drama but now this? Thanks but no thanks!

I like food, wine and Korean dramas so I will give all three a try, if after the fourth episode it does not hold my interest, then I'll drop both the wine and the drama. I usually give a show a 4 episode trial run, I drop once the interest is not there.

I raise my glass and say "Cheers!"

I really enjoyed the first 2 episodes, and I have to say that the 2nd episode was better. And I think this might just be a Kdrama with an actual solid story-line (unlike most, that end up with too many gaps). I truly felt that this drama had a compelling plot. And the directing is stellar, fully utilizing the romantic fall landscape and backalleys of France. More surprisingly, it is not actress Han Hye Jin that shines in the drama (although she is quite bright and refreshing), it is actually lead actor Kim Joo Hyuk who carries the drama with his captivating performance. Kim Joo Hyuk offers great subtlety to his character, acting cool while maintaining a degree of earnestness, haughty and unruly yet revealing a glimpse of his vulnerabilities and emotions, and restraining his true emotions towards a bitter-sweet love.

Although this drama is about wine, which does not apply or attract to a wide audience in Korea, the drama still makes an effort to dispel assumptions that wine is exclusive to elites. It shows the possibility that anyone from any class can enjoy wine, just as people in Europe do. I've given up looking at ratings because I've found that many "experimental" dramas that introduce different genres (such as action, fantasy, suspense) is not well received by Korean audiences who are used to mainstream melodramas and romantic comedies. However, international viewers more readily acknowledge such advancements in dramas. I feel that Terroir finds a great balance by not dwelling on the technicalities of wine and drowning in it. But rather, it provides a blend of action, suspense, romance and melodrama that will hopefully culminate in a rich, complex masterpiece.

(This may sound dorky, but I felt like the plot was similar to that of James Bond 007. Weird huh? I know.)

Kim Joo Hyuk & Han Hye Jin acting seem unnatural to me...hope epi 3 & 4 and thier acting can be improved...otherwise I doubt I will continue with it.

I'm keeping up with the series and I'm always checking to see when the new episodes will come out (raw or subbed). Definitely one of those sleeper dramas that others miss but is absolutely a must watch. If I could pay to have the episodes delivered faster, I would.

Great series!enjoyed it from start to finish.interesting plot, good chemistry btw main characters, beautiful backdrop, soothing OST.I give it a 4 Star rating, short of one becoz the ending was just so .....tame..lacking in passion. There should have been more open display of love n affection btw the two characters after their reunion.Still,it was great watching HHJ n KJH and look forward to more collaboration btw them despite the vast age gap.Terroir has revived my waning interest in k dramas n in wine drinking too.

I just love this series! I was switching channels about 3 weeks ago, in Los Angeles, when I came across this program midway on Channel 18 (10-11pm) . It took 30 seconds to get hooked... I knew I had stumbled upon something really good. It also must have helped seen this very cute girl in short hair (I Googled her, the show, and the other characters), and I was glued to my TV for the remaining of the episode. I have seen pieces here and there of other Korean dramas, but nothing like this one, hard to explain, this one was... special. The acting, the writing, even the music, all combined in a true 'mariage' .
By the way, I am a Hispanic male, my elder mom too loves watching this show, I have to translate the English subtitles into Spanish for her to understand, but she basically gets most of it even without much translation (I wish it'd be be available/aired in Latin America).
I am definitely buying the entire DVD set. (BTW, I think Han Hye Jin looks lovely in short hair, dare I say she looks better in short hair than long?) .
I have told all of my co-workers to start watching it, and they really like it too.
I have also picked up a few words in Korean (and learned a few bits about Korean culture & wine in general too!).
Thanks for creating such a great drama.

I am a little late with my opinion but I have to say that I loved this drama. I think the Leading man was perfectly cast. He is good looking without being cut from the usual mold. He has an interesting face and his way of bringing this character to life was most intriguing. He seemed calm and cool but gave off an intense measure of emotions so much of the time. He was very self controlled as the character and also as the actor. Very enjoyable. Definitely on the boil internally..
Leading lady was too scattered and not quite believable in many parts of this drama. I could accept and imagine the leading man but could not quite see her character as a real human being.
I liked the idea of the story and truly liked the wine and making of wine as the lynch pin for the drama. French scenes were great and KJH speaks such beautiful French.
I liked the settings of Terroir the restaurant. You could imagine sitting at a table there and smell the old wood building and the food and feel a real ambience of a French country inn.
I liked the rest of the cast ..even the rather strange chef. He did not go too far with the usual chef temper but you could see he was often on the edge.
I don't know why this drama did not do better in ratings but I don' t take too much notice of them myself and I just see dramas and like them for all my own reasons.

For whatever the negative comments, I like this one very much, it's different, I like all the characters, the coolness of Tae Min, the over excited and passionate Woo Ju and all others cast Manager Jo and funny Woo Ju's best friend, what's her name I can't never able to remember, the music is excellent just the right music for the right scene, watching this drama is like a story of a family. Terroir is a family and I hope they going to make Terroir 2, the journey Tae Min and Woo Ju takes on Terroir Wine and other relationships in Terroir that not yet finished.

I didn't give a hoot about wine before but this was on TV as a rerun the other day and I was hooked. It's a breath of fresh air. Solid storyline based on a foreign topic like wine, great soundtrack, and the actors are good to look at too :)
It's a pity it didn't do better in the ratings. I strongly recommend this drama.

the cast was spot on, the storyline interesting, the wines - i dont know anything about wine - but i sure learnt some stuff. too much info for me.

hence it was all about getting it right, and this was done well in this drama.

Do not miss this series, notwithstanding the unfavorable national ratings!

No doubt it follows the standard Korean formula of converting initial mutual dislike to mellowness and then onwards to romantic love, but I enjoy watching how the leading lady Lee Woo-Joo survive the proprietor Kang Tae-Min's several attempts to sack her, and the comedic antics between the kitchen assistant and the gourmet Chef Andre.

More than this, I love the cosy ambience and accompanying easy-listening lounge music of the Terroir set, so if you like wine, or like to learn something about wine, watch this!

I watched this drama till the end and I must say that this is a must watch. I know those who pass on this is making a big mistake.

I admit the first few episodes are kinda dragging or slow but it will get very interesting. The romance and dramatic aspect of this drama gets better as the epidosed progressed.

I was kinda dissapointed because I couldn't find any sites to download this drama only to watch.

Anyways, please give this drama a chance and you wouldn't be disappointed...
