I think Lee Yo-won has the potential to portray the regal stature of a queen as she is very tall and statuesque, while Sung Yuri is not.

Also, I really liked her in Surgeon Bong Dal-Hee.

Lee Yo Won's film work is better, but I don't know how I feel about this choice. True, she's done the Great Ambition, but I still can't visualize her in this role. I actually would have preferred her to play the villain.

I really didn't think much of her in Bad Love -- her acting was sort of lifeless if you will! Yes you said cause of the drama but she could've done better I guess? I haven't seen her in Surg. Bong....etc. but sorry no offense she's not one of my fave K-actresses!

I hope they don't make her wear heavy bangs like in the really awful Bad Love.

She's great. I don't know for this particular role or not, but I love LYW. She has a certain charm that others don't. I hope she gets the role; I want to see her in something new soon.

Honestly, with the way the script was written, she was out on an island in Bad Love. Kwon Sang Woo kind of did a parody of Kwon Sang Woo in that show.

Lee Yo Won's a much better actress than that, though. Her chemistry with her leads can be a little chilly, but she kinda brings a "real woman" credibility to her roles, and she tends to underplay her roles nowadays. I liked her in Surgeon Bong Dal-Hee, but I loved her in Fashion 70s. Check out her movie with Bae Doo Na, "Take Care of My Cat."

I like Lee Yo Won..She's one of the good K- actresses.. I started to like her since Fashion 70s and then watched her other works in Surgeon Bong Dal Hee, Great Ambition and Pure Heart..But I missed Bad Love because it's not my type of drama.

I like Go Hyun Jung as well ..I'm looking forward to this drama..Hopefully, it has good storyline.

errr.... i find it uncalled for....I mean i get here they are coming from, but didn't she improve?? it's been almost a year since her last drama, pretty sure shes even better now...For an actor to be able to portray something well, the director and script should also be up to par...also being a great actor doesn't equal rating success...proof is Lee Yo-won's Bad Couple...shes great and all, but the drama failed miserably

No!!! Lee Yo-won is so dull! I've watched Fashion 70s and rooted for the other girl because she was so much more compelling as an actress than LYW. In Surgeon Bong Dal Hee, it was the male co-star that saved the show. And don't get me started on Bad Love. It was the most disappointing show ever and part of it was the script and the other part was LYW's blah facial expressions.

She never looks energized, she looks older than her age, and she always seems so bland. Looks like I'll be skipping this show because LYW will be playing the titular character.

I don't think Sung Yuri is the best actress out there but I would have definitely chosen her over LYW.

Sung Yuri got too much negative comments, she might not be a great actress but she's good. i think she would do better in comedic roles anyways.

Personally, she is not a good choice for this role, judging from her past works. She may have been constrained or restricted for some reason in Bad Love, but she is dull, her eyes are almost always blank when she acts to the point that it's painful to watch her. If she plays the Queen, she must convey a strong character on screen. I just don't think she can.

I am a Fan of Sung Yuri & I think Lee Yo Won is a good actress, I watched many film of her such as: Furity ( acting Ryu Jin), Bad Love ( With Kwon Sang Woo), Fashion 70s...If say about film, awads & experience in career Lee Yo Won is a good than Sung Yuri. But, the success of a casting, a film need a lot of.

watching DAE MONG (great hope/ambition) right now (only watched the first few eps) and LEE YO WON plays nobility spot on (commanding and haughty on cue), so that's a big plus.

but LYW wasn't compelling in BAD LOVE; in terms of the older brother, i ended up rooting for the scorned wife, spoiled brat that she was.

whoever gets the role, i hope she steps up to the plate...

this is gonna sound like it's coming out from left field, but HAN CHAE YOUNG who was in DELIGHTFUL GIRL CHOON HYUNG would be a good choice. she also played the older incarnation of the evil sister in AUTUMN TALE where she was bitchy but REGAL bitchy with fire in her eyes. give her a sword and some minions and there's your queen...

btw, i liked SUNG YURI okay in SNOW QUEEN and HONG GIL DONG but if i had a choice, it'd still be HCY cuz she can be a believable bitchy drama queen big-time, but plays goofball characters just as good (even tho she played the villain in AUTUMN TAIL, she was empathetic--see her "reunion" w/the pseudo mom, that was a valid tearjerker scene...)

Lee Yo Won was way better in her acting before she got married - I considered her rather brilliant in Blue Fog as a 'temptress'. Even her pre-marriage movies like Surprise Holiday, Take Care of My Cat are much better than current so-called big budget blockbusters such as May 18. Mainly, three things have changed since her walking down the aisle:

1) She no longer walks nor runs naturally - her body language has become stiff.

2) Her eyes have lost their luster...some of the people here also commented on their 'lack of focus'.

3) She has somehow lost her saucy playfulness - available in truckloads in all her music videos and old dramas.

Makes me wonder if her husband has something to do with this?!!!

I think Lee better than Sung , Sung is so stiff in acting , Lee is charming , tomboy style
suitable for her . Her chemical to Kim is cute , sweet and adorable . This is great
historical drama as Jumong , Yisan and Legend . I hope script remaining more interesting , using brain more than just killing ,fighting as in Empress Cheonchu .

Lee is great as Deokman. I can't imagine anyone else acting in this part. I The actress who played Deokman as a younger girl was great as well. I can't wait to see the next episode.

i love lee yo won n kim nam gil in this drama.. so romantic.. but i m so sad bcoz it doesnt happy ending for them..

i see that some people posted comments on 2008-2009...it's just that i never know about this site till now..and the fact that today is April 10,2010, the Queen Seon DEok series has ended in south Korea and it's already aired in the Philippines every Monday-FRiday since Feb.2010 this year...to all of you thye series was a big success in Korea and i think all over the world.... Lee Yo- Won's acting skill is the best for me..along with the other casts.Uhm Tae-Woong as Gen. Kim Yushin and Kim Nam-gil as Bidam complete the trio which i think made it a huge success...

Really appreciating LYW after seeing her in QSD. She has this innate grace, X-factor (in regards to presence rather than physical appearance), that makes her stand out to me. I'm glad she was chosen as leading lady in QSD. Given, the series was >50 episodes, I didn't expect her to be fabulous every single second and moment. I think the best actors/actresses will have times where they falter - just means they are human. Overall, LYW gave a commanding performance.

I've seen Bad Love. It tries to showcase many of the darker emotions...without being balanced with more lighter moments. I found it emotionally interesting. I wouldn't say LYW did an oscar performance, but I wouldn't condemn her because of her part...it's not the most easier to interpret nor done well. So much fear and choices that may appear 'hard to digest' to many optimistic folk. I actually respect her for taking a part that obviously leans towards the 'anti-heroine' side. But, to judge LYW's suitability based on Bad Love, is IMHO, a Bad Judgement.

I cannot resist responding to curiousgal,

1. I too noticed the lack of ease with her locomotion. I'd take a stab and say hip adductors and/or abductors are seriously out of wack; or pelvis thing. Can be slight pelvis imbalance or muscle strain post labour enough to go unnoticed or unacknowledged post labour.

2 & 3. Subtle to significant fatigue syndromes can be particularly difficult states of being. If LYW doesn't seem to have 'focus' or 'oomph' to life she once had, there are many valid health reasons for that. It's quite clear LYW worked herself to the ground (and still does...she would've had to for QSD) in the past. Not knowing details to her labour, this could've added to prior poor state of health.

I have finished watching QSD. And I am glad that it was Lee Yo Won who got the titular role as the Queen. Personally speaking, as ive been watching it again, LYW's potrayal from her nangdo days to being a princess, then to becoming a queen was superb. From her boyish acting role as nangdo (which i think is so cute) has a lot of PHYSICAL EFFORT that she have done so well. Not to forget her FUNNY ANTICS with Yushin Rang & Princess Chunmyeong during the early part of the story . Also not to forget how well she have acted when princess chunmyeong died. The WAY SHE HAVE CRIED really moved me.Then to becoming a princess. I just LOVE on how she DELIVERED HER LINE when she confronted Mishil in the hallway. Saying to mishil that she is being disrespectful to the Sacred Bone,something like that. And for the role of the queen, she have delivered that role marvelously. Especially her LOVE STORY with BIDAM. Undeniably LYW & KNG has a strong chemistry with each other, thus I think which made this drama MORE APPEALLING to viewers.
I STRONGLY BELIEVED that Ms Lee Yo Won have protrayed her role very well. After seeing this film, i cannot deny my utmost admiration for her as an actress. She have indeed protrayed her role very well...I have seen some korean movies/ drama before, but never did i repeatedly watched it twice in a row.Just the thought of watching it 2x! hehe! and trying to see again those heart-wrenching scenario in QSD from youtube,i really cant help myself but share my feelings over this film.

those who doubt her acting becoz of bad Love, c'moon.. the bad is not her acting but the storyline,, the cast of Bad Love (Lee Yo Won n Kwon Sang Woo) are great !!!

and now, by Queen Seondeok, LYW proves again that she's not just a decent actress, she's great, charming, all out, hard worker, generous (ohh well she treat Jacket for all the staff... with UTW), and so many positive things from her.

i can't imagine if Deokman was't played by Lee Yo Won, whom can act with that complecated character like that, Deokman was firts boyish, love to shout (LOL), and Funny !! and then she become weempy...(tearing, so sad n pittyful), but then raise up !!! become tough!! how she get her status as Princess. and then become so charming, pretty, georgeous n so clever as Princess to defeat MISHIL !!

Ok, this is year of 2014 but no matter how long it takes, Queen Seondeok is still one of the best saeguk drama I've ever watch after Dae Jang Geum, Jumong, Yi San and the Legend. MBC really knows how to do casting. In fact, I appreciate for Lee Yo Won was chosen to play Deokman rather than Sung Yuri. LYW was perfect for the role and not to mention her amazing chemistry with Kim Nam Gil did really capture heart of the viewers. KBS's series The King's Dream was also about Shilla under Queen Seondeok's reign, but ask me who is the best playing Seondeok and Bidam? My answer will always be OF COURSE LEE YO WON AND KIM NAM GIL. Once again, thank you MBC for making all those wonderful, amazing and epical historical dramas!!!
