More cast members to leave Eden following Lee Da-hae
by javabeans
So, it looks like there is not going to be any kind of consensus on whether Lee Da-hae‘s sudden exit from East of Eden was unprofessional or not. Fans of the actress have been vocal in their defense, a much as others have been critical.
Still, what’s clear is that Lee Da-hae’s exit is going to have effects on the rest of the drama, and other supporting cast members are now going to be cut as a result of her quitting. After all, no man is an island, and no actor acts in a vacuum.
With Lee leaving abruptly, according to a source with the drama, the actors who play roles related to her Min Hye-rin character will most likely be let go early: Park Geun-hyung, Jung Yeon-sook, Jung So-young, and perhaps a few more. These supporting roles are tied in to Lee’s character, and will not be needed once Hye-rin leaves. The actors are still waiting to hear about their fates.
Some viewers have been supportive of Lee’s decision to leave the drama. Yet others are calling her behavior careless and inconsiderate, because as a lead actress she carries more responsibility than just for herself; other people are losing their jobs suddenly because of her.
I’ve read the comments criticizing and defending Lee, and I get that MBC dropped the ball with her character. I get that she felt neglected and misled, and that she wasn’t getting what she thought she signed up for. But really, it’s too bad she couldn’t stick it out just ten more episodes (and someone asked an interesting question — how is it that her health is suffering when she’s only in three minutes per episode?), because the question is not whether this will affect her image, but how much. I’m sure it will eventually blow over, but it won’t be without a cost to her career.

"In fact by attributing her departure to these so called “medical issues” she is simultaneously admitting that she couldn’t and wouldn’t be able to handle the lead role in this drama."
Good point, I totally agree...
Maybe that is the reason why the writers and the producers couldn't have her as the lead.. she had too many "medical issues" so her character was in the drama as much.
And I believe she should have stayed until the end. It does sound like her pride was hurt cause she wasn't the lead. She should have totally sucked it up. That way I would have at least felt sorry for her. Who would want to work with someone that doesn't finish something they started, certainly not the entertainment business.

I haven't been watching the drama, so I don't know about her character and how the situation has been running, but I still don't think it gives her any right to just leave a project she had signed up for. She is a professional actor who is getting paid- with a profession comes a responsibility. Her choice how much lack of respect she has for herself as an actor, and all the others who have been working on the drama. Whether it was an issue of her pride, or the fault of the directors is not of importance. It is something that can happen in any drama, but agreeing to be in the drama to begin with means that she needs to follow through on her word.
I was impartial to LDH before this, but now, I'm not so sure. I respected her for her acting skills (she has quite a broad range in my opinion). Now, I can't help but see her as an irresponsible, pompous actress with 공주병. It's a shame that the other actors working with her will be affected, along with the storyline itself, let alone the atmosphere on the set.

#100 Anonymous is an idiot. We all know that you're a LDH fan alright, but there is absolutely no need to drag SSH and LYH all inside. These people aren't involved in this incident AT ALL, you idiot. It was Lee Da-hae HERSELF who wanted to quit this damn drama. So stop blaming SSH and LYH as if they really forced LDH into quitting or something... It's so obvious that you're commenting in such a biased manner... -.-''' What. An. Idiot.

The writer should take most of the blame on losing directions while developing the relationships between DW, HR, and DC. This also expose big problem
behind how kdramas are produced. MBC spent so much money on EOE, yet
ill-prepared scripts could throw everything off the track!
LDH fans should also take some blame for insisting on the development of love between DC & HR while the writer obviously already got too deep into DC & YR's relationship. If LDH fans could let the writer switch to put more energy into
developing relationship DW & HR, this whole mess may be able to avoid.
Last, from reading so many attacks from LDH fans in the past few months,
I really doubt they've helped their star at all. Gosh! What an eye opener !!!

i wish people won't take this issue as LDH-fans versus non LDH fans, but take the issue as basically an issue. this situation could happen to any actress. If this was to happen to Choi Ji Woo, Yoon Eun Hye, Kim Sun ah, Kim Jung Eun, Kim Jung Hwa, Jeon Ji Hyun- would those who support LDH's situation still feel the same and would those who do not support her decision feel the same. I know personally, if this happened with another actress, I would still feel the same. I would support her decision. I can see where the actress was coming from and she had compelling reasons. To me (I know there are those who feel differently), it wasn't an irrational decision that she made. Even though I support her decision, however, I also feel that if it were me, I wouldn't have quit because it's not in my personality to make such big risks.

I agree with you at some point. If it happened to another actor I would still feel the same way. For me, any actor who leaves before finishing what they were hire to do then I lose some respect for them. I understand that it must have been hard for her but the way she left is harsh. She insulted the writers and that's just wrong. And the excuse she made was just lame. She's an actress and she's not all that but she should know that's it's not all about her. There is a whole crew involve. So things didn't go her way... well it didn't go their way either.... she quit! It just sounds to me like she's a sore loser. She could have gone out with class. But no... why couldn't she just deal till the end?

lol
well, its such a hard decision to make though..
for her.. of course..
but, why MBC want to hire her if she doesn't have so much scene and told her that they want to make her as one of the main char?
guess its only for MBC sake to push the rating..
if not, why are they hiring so many famous actress and actors? o.O
Its just sad that she really has to make that decision and leave..
but, I'm sure that she already think of this ..
as they say, why does she need to leave the drama if the rating already hit 30%?
she must have her own personal reason, rather than not being professional.
Its her career.
no one wants to ruin their career with some stupid mistake, right?
well, indirectly i'm one of her fans u can say..
I just like to see her act.. that's all..
and I watch this drama b'coz of her, song seung hun, and Han Ji hye.. >_<
even though im quite disappointed with her decision coz i'd love to see her act in this drama..
well, what we can do.. its all her choice..
anw, Merry Christmas and Happy New year.. and Happy HOLIDAY!!

It's obvious that #100 and #106 is the same person, if not, a very demented fan of LDH. Unfortunately, obsession over a certain artiste has lead to some brainless person pushing the blame to almost everybody in the world except her "darling LDH". Please, if you cannot comment in an unbiased manner, then I rather you f*** off and stop commenting. Clearly, your obsession with your idol has led to you thinking in a very immature and childish manner, as seen from the way you write, so what you write here cannot be taken seriously. Of course, there is no wrong with liking an artiste or being crazy over them, but you're obsessed till the point whereby you push the blame of LDH leaving to others. I ask you, what has the rest of the people got to do with LDH leaving EoE? Did they tell her to quit? If you cannot prove this point, then I suggest, STOP MAKING ACCUSATIONS AND SHUT YOUR GAP! You have shown, to the rest of the readers, that the mentality of LDH's fans is only that much. So, unless you can stop blaming everybody in the world for LDH's exit, stop commenting, you git. And please, save LDH's fans some face, because not all of them are like you.

@ #111: erm. if i haven't interpreted #106 wrongly, i think the writer of that post was being sarcastic.
also to fans of lee da hae, i'm sorry but it's just hard to sympathise with someone who's getting paid ridiculous amounts of money to appear, like you guys say, for three minutes per episode. i really don't see how sticking it out for 10 more episodes (that's thirty minutes of screen time) would have killed her. sure her character may have done ridiculous things, but i don't think playing a bimbo would lower public opinion of her any more than the furore she's caused by pulling out of the drama. i don't really understand her actions.. won't this media frenzy compound the stress-related illnesses she claimed she was facing? i know for a fact that MY blood pressure would rise if people were calling me names, haha.

I don't get some of LDH's fans. They say that LDH's character is their favourite on EOE but after LDH pulls out of EOE they suddenly say that her character sucks and it doesn't suit her. Like what the hell? You guys sure like to change your minds really fast eh? And why are some of you people out there blaming LDH's decision to leave on other actors such as Song Seung Hun and Lee Yeon Hee? Some people out there really can't look pass the truth because they can't stand to hear anything bad being said about their precious actor/actress which I find really sad.

I think making East of Eden the biggest budget TV series of all time is MBC’s biggest mistake in the long run. I had a feeling that this series will somehow flop when they first announced it - you never want to make the “biggest” of anything. Bringing a ton of top stars together and risking $25 million for one series (without proper planning) have always proven to flop a potentially good story/series.
And here they (MBC) are, with Lee Da Hae leaving and the audiences pissing off at how MBC used her fame to promote a series she gets like 2 minutes an episode and her character “lost” in the storyline. Not only that, the series basically sucks because everything carelessly planned out - you can tell watching this series because there are scenes that are just “there” - no signifcance - story is draggy and the reason why the characters/relationships seems so “complex” is because it isn’t - it is “messy” NOT complex. It seems complex because it is “messy” - poorly planned and executed. The reason I think is because I think there is too much resources for the crew to work with - too much star actors/actresses, too much money to budget, too much choices! And when you are overwhelmed w/ too many choices, poor decisions will be made.
I feel sorry for the writer of this story - because supposedly the writer spent over 2 years writing it and now it is all butchered up. Had they had less to work with, this could’ve been a good series. However, it looks like this may become the biggest flop in history.

Wow, I didn't know there were so many anti-Lee Da Hae fans. Seriously, I'm not even a fan but I can't blame her for leaving because SSH was practically dictating and criticizing her behind the scenes. He's a divo, first-rate bastard. He brought in Lee Yeon Hee without even auditioning her. His management is handling most of the budget/production of EOE

this departure will with no doubt affect her acting career in some way.. most likely the negative way.. however, I really have mixed feelings about this whole thing, Although I´m a LDH-fan I still have to say that she´s being unprofessional and irresponsible for doing this. She may have strong reasons for deciding to leave, and I guess that she won´t be the one to regret it either since she must have been aware of what it would do to her career and image. This is just an opportunity to make the anit-fanbase stronger and let it grow even more..,, it seems like the big actresses the year 2008 made their popularity decrease leaving space for some nice rookies to take the spotlight.. Song hye gyo also made a floppy appearence with her weird character/acting, there I have to admit, couldn´t even stand more than 3 episodes of her,.. REally she was soo annnoying in that drama, and believe me, I´m a die-hard-fan of Gyo also...
I wish these 2 "big" actresses all the luck and that they won´t give up the hope, everything has to go up and down in order to create a life, life´s that... so yeah..
as for the actualy drama East of Eden, I´ve always had the feeling that they wanted the drama to sound greater than it actually was, investing lots os money and putting ALL the best actors in on and the same drama.. resulted in a feast containing too much goodies that one could vomit just by watching it let alone eating it... so I´m merely just watching it due to that I´ve nothing better to do.. really, but now that the hana yori dango version has come out I´m planning to abandon the 50-epi drama, but then again, I´ll still have to wait for subs.. well, LDH´s character never appealed to me in any ways, I didn´t end up hating her character only cos she wasn´t at the edge of pissing me off.. I guess me limit is pretty resistant...
just my 2 cents..

honestly, i completely understand why she would leave. she was supposed to end up with song seung hun. and now they want her to just be a minor character??? thats ridiculous. i mean, i also think the story is better with ssh and lee yeon hee together, but that just really sucks for lee da hae. shes supposed to be an a-list celeb and they totally turned her into a b-list. haha but i still like yeon hee better. :D

I wondered how any actor can leave a job in the middle of a filming. Don't they have to sign a contract before they begin?? If Lee Da Hae was given a contract stating she was the leading actress in this drama, then that would seem to be a broken situation. In such a case she has the right ot objection. The film company could then negotiate for her to be given a much larger part in the drama or they should pay her compensation and let her go.
Interesting situation which we will probably never hear about. It could also be a case of backstage manipulations. There are so many young actresses in this drama and they all want to be the lead of course. She is certainly the most attractive one around but maybe she is not good at 'playing the game'....

i was reminded of this incident again, after seeing maggie cheung's very gallant reaction to getting cut from tarantino's new movie "inglorious basterds" (it's a big ensemble/cast of international actors.) hey it never hurts to learn from your elders :P
from twitch:
--
“He (Tarantino) called me from Cannes to explain that my scenes had to be cut to ensure the film’s length. I really thought it was no big deal,” Cheung told reporters as she and her boyfriend Ole Scheeren showed up at an art event in Hong Kong.
“It’s quite common for actors,” Cheung added.
