Jang Dong-gun back on TV

Jang Dong-gun (Taegukgi, Friend) made a television appearance on the inaugural December 14 episode of the new talk show Park Joong-hoon Show on KBS. The reason this is noteworthy is that Jang has eschewed broadcast appearances and hasn’t been seen on a talk show in eight years.

His last drama appearance was in 2000’s All About Eve (co-starring Chae Rim), and he’s been keeping a low profile in recent years. He hasn’t been very active in the Korean entertainment sphere for the past three years, mostly because he’s been working on the Hollywood production Laundry Warrior (co-starring Geoffrey Rush and Kate Bosworth).

In the show, Jang was uncharacteristically open and frank about his life, including his early days, his career, his romantic experiences (and failures), and yes, how it’s awfully lonely up there at the top.

So here’s the rundown:

  • Known to be a good student in his youth, he’d failed his college entrance exam because he’d suffered from pneumothorax (collapsed lung) in high school. He underwent surgery for the condition.
  • After failing to gain college acceptance, he’d thought himself quite unlucky. When he was discovered for his first ad job, he decided to pursue the actor’s life in earnest.
  • He got that first gig when he’d been working various part-time jobs around his neighborhood, and was discovered in a “street casting” for a print ad.
  • Host Park Joong-hoon asked about the rumors of Jang’s plastic surgery. Jang maintains he’s 100% natural, and that the reason his cheekbones seemed much more prominent in his Typhoon days was attributed to drastic weight loss — more than 10 kg.
  • He currently weighs 72-73 kg, a “comfortable” weight. Right before Typhoon, he’d done Taegukgi, where he was his heaviest at 80 kg. That made his drop down to 67 kg for Typhoon that much more noticeable.
  • Often asked about his height, he gave the exact measurement, 181.4 cm.
  • Is he tired of hearing comments like “You’re so handsome”? Answer: “I’m not tired of it. To be honest, I feel good whenever I hear it.”

  • Is his absence from television was because he’d wanted to retain his mystique? Jang answered that it’s partly due to his personality (he doesn’t feel comfortable appearing in front of people) — and partly due to his belief that he would rather show himself through his acting instead.
  • What does he do in his spare time? Jang doesn’t have particular hobbies, but he likes to travel. Because he so often talks to reporters while promoting his projects, discussing his achievements and work, he begins to think, “I don’t know who I really am.” When those feelings build, he goes away on a trip, to rediscover himself.
  • However, he’s been feeling lonelier lately, as he grows older (he’s 37, or 36 by Western counting): “When I was younger, I enjoyed solitude. These days, I’m really lonely. A lot of nights, I can’t sleep well.”
  • Sometimes he comes home from drinking with friends in the early morning (2-3am) and is hit with feelings of despondence. When he mentioned this to fellow actor Kim Min-jong (Woman of Beauty Park Jung-geum) recently, who sympathized, Kim gave him a sudden hug and handed him his own rosary.
  • Jang’s loneliness is such that there have been times when he’s lain awake in the middle of the night (2-3am), drunk a few cans of beer, and thought to himself, “If I get a call from a woman within 20 minutes, I’ll marry her.” (And… following this interview, Jang will suddenly be inundated with midnight phone calls…) He explains, “I have a lot of good friends, but it’s a void that people can’t fill.”
  • About dating: He’s only ever dated a couple women “seriously.”
  • He’s gone on a couple blind marriage dates, but “obviously those couldn’t work out” — “the other person knows too much about me, and holds prejudices about me” while he would know nothing about them.
  • He attributes his failed dating experiences with the inability to do normal things — other people get to know each other as they go out to eat together or watch movies, but he can’t do those things.
  • The hardest thing about being a star: “missing the ordinary.”
  • In the past (earlier in his career), Jang wanted to live a normal, ordinary life, but he’s realized he can’t have that. “I’m okay with that now, but the process of coming to that realization was difficult.”
  • He thinks that perhaps later, “when I think back to my 37-year-old self, I’ll regret living too seriously.”

Wow, that was some very disarming honesty. I must say that I am not used to hearing such comments from celebrities about their loneliness and despondence. Major props to Jang Dong-gun for putting it all out there. It makes you realize that famous people are still people who deserve more respect than they get (I think) for putting up with their entire lives being on display.

I feel for him... it's already tough being an ordinary person with no celebrity status to sit by myself at night and feel overcome by loneliness... but to be a celebrity-- that's got to be even harder to deal with when everyone knows who you are but no one takes the time to see you for who you are, but rather uses the media and dramas to draw conclusions about you

Thanks Javabeans for the news...Is Park Joong Hoon also his co star in old K-Movie titled Nowhere To Hide?
It is nice to see he befriend Kim Min Jong. I like KMJ as well. I remember he and JDG worked together in old K-Drama "Ghost".

I read a similar comment by bae yong-joon about how lonely he is too... i guess fame really does come at a price. It's weird though... in Hollywood, the A-listers get hitched and divorced like there's no tomorrow but in Korea, the A-listers find it extremely hard to even meet that one someone special.

Maybe stars like JDG and BYJ just aren't looking in the right places. I'm soooooo available!!!!!!

I really respect his honesty. Hey, I'm 23, and I get depressed late at night - especially if I've been drinking. But at least I can go out and meet people freely, without concerns about who sees me or what they might know about me. I hope he's able to meet a special someone soon. Everyone deserves a little bit of privacy and love. :)

his frankness makes me feel really sad. Now I think about all those other celebs out there who want success and want to do what they love, but in return, they have to sacrifice the simple joys of normal life- like meeting a woman and not knowing anything about each other. It must be weird to go on a date and have the woman know your exact weight and height, hobbies, fave snacks, etc. He probably live anywhere close to a normal life until he's 60- and by then he's too old to really take advantage of things. It must suck to see guys around his age getting married and having kids and going on family trips to the amusement parks. I guess the only place for JDG to look for love is in a foreign country where people aren't as familiar with him or in some remote isolated country village. But I'm glad he at least have some celebrity friends to give him a hug and their support.

What a nice interview that must have been. Usually these talk shows are full of bullshit with stars pretending to be down to earth etc but JDG comes across as a genuinely sensitive and thoughtful guy. I really remember liking his CNN interview He gave very honest interesting answers then too.
I wouldn't mind the money but I don't ever want to be famous. My privacy is too precious.
I hope Laundry Warrior is a huge success......of course as a loyal fan I will go and see the film and buy the dvd. I think he will make a great match with beautiful Kate Bosworth. I am a little worried they are taking so long with releasing it......that's not a good sign. They wrapped shooting last year but I haven't heard anything since then.
I don't think he got major plastic surgery because I saw a picture of his dad on the internet and he was just as handsome as JDG.

It's obvious he shouldn't be looking at blind dates with ordinary people. Do it like Hollywood. Date celebrities! They probably go through the same feelings, so it's understandable that they end up together if they feel lonely at the top. I mean, it's way too difficult to filter out so many ordinary people that only care about his fame and celebrity status. So it's best to look for love in the already filtered out pool of women, female celebrities! lol.

Awwww!

Didn't he used to date Yeom Jung-ah in the 90s? (he's so scandal-free, that's the only gossip I know about him)

Almost all the A-listers in Korea in their mid-to-late 30s are unmarried (JDG, Bae Yong-joon, Lee Byung-hun, Lee Jung-jae, Jung Woo-sung, Lee Young-ae, Choi Ji-woo, etc.). Must be especially hard to meet someone amidst all the public scrutiny and netizen craziness.

i respect him so much more after this article.
i dont know alot about him but admired most of his works as well as his professionalism.
I really love all about eve and TaeGukGi

There is something about him (- i dont know what..) that makes me feel that what he had said above is not a fabricated story by his manager for publicity purpose or for constructing a better image on top of his present already-good-and-mega-star status..etc..
If someone else said those same lines, i would have thought the other wise.

I have been very impressed by the sincerity of JDG.
A rarity in times of continuous media lies.
I think he wanted to show his soul without artifice and without any charm derived from his reputation. Open own heart to speak of distress of his loneliness or lack of, or perhaps the loss of love... These moments are so reserved and private that it is very difficult to find words to tell them...
He was very courageous in his confession.
Which man would appear so fragile in the silence of the night?
He wanted to say... I am a man like everyone else.
A man alone.
I want to love and be loved.

That rosary that was given to him...
It helps a lot.
I hope that he is a believer.

LOL. For some reason, reading that made me laugh. :) Poor JDG. Loneliness can hit you like a sledgehammer.

I have always adored Jang Dong Gun. <33 He's like my most favorite male korean celebrity ever EVER....and it's not just because of All About Eve, which piqued my interest in all things korean (well..Autumn Love Story was the first kdrama I ever watched, but it was All About Eve that turned me into a kdrama addict hook, line and sinker :P) but the man himself is a breath of fresh air. Since 2000, I've followed JDG's career and have seen most (if not all) of his dramas and movies. He does seem to be a very frank, considerate and shy man, and that's part of his charms. It's hard to believe that such a good looking man like JDG would find it difficult to meet good women (calling all korean spinsters - what are you waiting for?? Give the man a call! Be assertive woman! This shy dreamboat is up for grabs :D), but maybe after doing this show, things will look up for him? Haha....all the best, JDG.

now half the female population is after his number ;-) maybe he should date famous female celebs like him, they'd understand each other's need for privacy better ;-)

oh i wished i knew his ph number, that shouldn't be hard if it's Jang! i love this guy! pls don't be lonely, there's lots of beautiful Korean women even outside the entertainment world! he seems like a very humble, down to earth guy and whoever will be lucky to call him is the luckiest girl in the world! he's my number one Korean actor aside from his acting potential i think as a person being private & all that is quite unique for an actor! God bless you & may you find your lifetime partner as nice as you are cause you seem to be a very nice person!
by the way, i wrote to you recently to ask for your photo & addressed it to your agency or ex agency but it was returned to sender as it wasn't your add. anymore! i was just disappointed! i wished also you were my age so i can apply as a candiate for that 20 min. phone call! i'm just too old for you (smile). kidding aside, all the best to all your endeavours. sarang

i don't suppose Jang will have a hard time getting that phone call the problem is how are we gonna know his ph no. that's a $64 mill. question now. it's hard to believe a handsome & popular actor like him can't find a suitable woman for himself? i guess maybe he's too private & as he said he can't do the ordinary things such as dating etc. since he's too busy at work! i'm sure as we speak his phone will be ringing off the hook! i wish i could give him a call! (smile) just avoid being lonely Jang & don't drink too much as it's not really good for your health! i'm one of your huge fans in America & if you ever come over for a shoot i'd go the extra mile to see you! i can't wait to see Laundry Warrior & yes i'll support you all the way! i liked you in Taegukgi & all about eve etc. you're one of the best!

during the interview he was asked if he did have plastic surgery & if i may say so i did notice he looks different compared to how he looked in other dramas such as All About Eve, even in Taegukgi where his cheekbones were not that prominent at all! I just hope he didn't go under the knife as he's very handsome already! he seems to have lost a lot of weight & hope his weight bounces back a little just choko (little in hangul?) cause you look better with a bit of weight Jang! Pls make more dramas like a romantic drama -- i'm sure it will be a blockbuster! take care & stay as humble/private as you are! not very many people are like you esp when you're in A-list actor. Pls don't be too lonely or despondent anymore, you're still young & just enjoy and one day that lucky girl will come!

Huh, I'm terrible at keeping up with any kind of actors/actresses, so really he's quite a stranger to me for all I watch kdrama. I feel for him because I've certainly had those late night feelings. The loneliness can only be distracted for so long before it is a void you want to scream into to try and fill. I'm not even at his age yet or status (closest I have is that my college is so small you can't help but know what everyone's about), but I'd like to think I have an idea about loneliness like that. I've had plenty of times for wanting to do that scream. Nothing else can make you feel more lost when you have everything else right (to a degree). Everything else being right can augment it. It doesn't help alcohol is a depressive certainly. Just brings things down more. Perhaps its the romantic in me, (I will agree he's handsome), but I'd be willing to suddenly be that wrong number. Not saying flat out marriage, but a date or more I'd be willing to see about. Or even just a really really long phone call if that would help (granted it would help if I learned Korean or if he knew English. Oh language barriers.). No one should feel so alone.

"When he mentioned this to fellow actor Kim Min-jong (Woman of Beauty Park Jung-geum) recently, who sympathized, Kim gave him a sudden hug and handed him his own rosary."

Seriously, I think Kim Min-jong is the most genuinely loved actor in the business. He not only has many friends, but his friends speak of him with deep affection, reverence, and gratitude.

"Jang’s loneliness is such that there have been times when he’s lain awake in the middle of the night (2-3am), drunk a few cans of beer, and thought to himself, “If I get a call from a woman within 20 minutes, I’ll marry her.”

You know, it's eerie how this sounds like Won Bin, So Ji Sup, or Bae Yong Joon. Or Kwon Sang Woo. Okay, Kwon Sang Woo would never say this, and if he did, it would be after a few hundred cans of beer. But still. Is there a curse to being this hot?

Maybe they're all haunted by Won Bin.

If you don't know why Jang Dong Gun is famous, then obviously you're new to Korean entertainment. I'm not saying that to judge, we were all new to something at some point, but people should really brush up on their history (and it's not really old history either, just go back to the late nineties, heck early 2000s). The man is one of the most respected, well liked & talented actors in the Korean film industry. You don't have to be a film buff but do a little research before saying stuff like "I don't get why he's so famous!" just because you can't see him on crap variety television every weekend.

doris p, I would say that some people are photogenic, and some people are telegenic. Jang Dong-gun falls into (for me) the telegenic category -- meaning, he looks nice in pictures but you have to really see him in action to get his charisma.

He's not the typically pretty metrosexual that's been in vogue in recent years (Bae Yong-joon, Jo In-sung, Daniel Henney), but somehow portrays an interesting mix of masculinity and gentleness.

^ Right on, javabeans. JDG's beauty has to be seen in motion. To me, his eyes are his greatest asset, although many of his fans would vouch for his killer side profile (this man has the most perfect nose for an asian man- the most requested male nose, I reckon, in Korea's plastic surgery clinics). His eyes reflect such purity and gentleness, that's uncommon for a grown man. I remember JDG in the kdrama 'Sarang' (costarring Kim Mi Sook, Song Yunah and Choi Ji Woo), the scene where he was grieving over his dead lover (Kim Mi Sook) with tears slowly forming in his big brown eyes, just broke my heart. Such raw emotions....it was almost too much to take.

doris p, if JDG is 'average looking', then i rather have an average looking man rather than a good looking man.

he is very gorgeous. agree with the above comment that he has such a killer side profile. he is totally a beauty created by God. I pity you, doris p, that you can't feel such beauty. perhaps you haven't seen much of him..oh wellz, beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder....i probably wouldn't find the actors you like good looking at all either.

but anyway, i've watched the talk show, and i love all his answers, very honest and sweet!

Oh man. I feel for him.

From the very first I laid an eye on him in "All About Eve" I can feel that he is kind of very personal, humble and shy kind of person. Meaning that he is very contra with common celebrity in Korea nowadays. This interview prove it.

I agreed with you Sara, he really give the vibe of masculinity and gentleness. I mean, he is really success but I can feel that he is really vulnarable inside too.

I really do hope he will find one day his soul mate. A woman that will love him and only him for what he is. That will comfort him through the night and hug him when he needed it. That will be with him and accept him because himself.

I hope the best that he will have a happy and contended life later.

Popularity wouldn't mean any thing without a partner beside you.
