All In gets a sequel

After Sung Yuri was touted as the new Queen Seon-deok, then summarily dropped, she’s now being announced as the confirmed lead in the sequel to the uber-popular 2003 drama All In.

The original SBS series starred then-dating Song Hye-gyo and Lee Byung-heon and subsequently shot Song to bona fide stardom. (Sung and Song, incidentally, are said to also be good friends.)

The “All In 2” series will bear the title 꾼들의 나라 (working title; Gamblers’ World or Workers’ World) and features as its male lead Ji Sung (New Heart) — who, by the way, was also in the original All In. The story features young natives of Seogwipo city on Jeju Island who strive to turn their hometown into an international destination.

The drama reunites original writer Choi Wan-kyu (who also wrote Gourmet, Jumong, Love Story in Harvard, and Heo Jun) and PD Yoo Chul-yong (of HIT, Sad Sonata) and will air in 24 episodes on SBS next June. It plans to begin filming in January.

(By the way, I came across a statement listing Lee Na-young as the lead instead of Sung, but that appears to be wrong. How cool would that have been, though? On the other hand, I think Sung Yuri is much, much better off doing All In 2 than Queen Seon-deok. Better for her, and better for both dramas.)

Omg!!!!
All In is my MOST FAVORITE drama ever!!!!!!!!!!
But, I think it would be weird for Ji Sung to be the star in the sequal since he was the third wheel in All In.

Agree with you that it would be cool to have Lee Na-young as the lead & Sung Yuri's better off in this than Queen Seon-deok.

Agree with you that Sung Yuri is more suited to this drama than Queen Seon-deok. She isn't too strong an actress to carry that character off.

^ Ermm.. it's a sequel? So it's gonna continue from where it stopped in All In? How can it be a sequel without Lee Byung Heon!!!

Anywayz, I would have loved it more if Lee Na Young took on the role, I really like her as an actress. But SYR isn't that bad... hopefully her team-up with Ji Sung will spice up the drama...

I think the problem here is that Choi Wan-kyu is "working" (I'd love to be the fly in the writers' boardroom for that one) on General Hospital 2, Kingdom of the Wind right now, and he'll be the solo screenwriter for Iris, which will also air in 2009. Even though All In was his baby, it seems unlikely he'll be solo for both "All In 2" (Land of Professionals?) and IRIS, and a loose sequel may not appeal to him. Jumong (aka Chuck Norris of Korea) fulfilled Choi Wan-kyu's career mission statement to become the Jerry Bruckheimer/Stephen Cannel of Korean TV. Having fulfilled that, he seems to outsource his plots (and fanboy love of American Ninja/GI Joe-style storylines) to other writers.

Anyway, I love All In. Love. All. In. Nothing says "yes we can!" like Lee Byung Hun teaching vatos locos from South Central Tae Kwon Do next to a 7-11. That scene changed my life and surely many others.

This is also a great opportunity for Sung Yu Ri to glam up proper. I think the chemistry between her and Ji Sun will crackle!

THIS is a role I'd love to see Sung Yu Ri try. She's played (i.e. Snow Queen), but she hasn't done full-on bling yet. I'd love if Ji Sung was actually reprising his Jung Wong character.

Oh, wow! I'm thrilled :D Ji Sung! <3 I can hardly wait ^^ And I also think that Sung Yuri is better off with this role than the one in Queen Seon-deok. Hope indeed that their chemistry will crackle XD

I never saw "All In" but I'll be sure to watch this one! Ah, it's scheduled in June? That's a long wait... on the other hand last month passed in a blur, so maybe not ^^;;;;

I'm all for Ji Sung, but I wished the female role was someone else other than Sung Yuri! :( Not so convinced about her.

---THIS drama would be much better, we'd get to see how YURI would be STYLISH! haha! in SAGEUK dramas she only gets to wear 3 or less dress! LOL!

i just saw a few episodes of All In & never got to finish it but I'll sure consider going back to watch it --- I like Ji Sung as he's one of my favorite male K-actors! He also has a great singing voice which you can listen almost non-stop! Glad they have a sequel which would prompt me to watch the rest of All In on line. Thnx javabeans for the good news!

Hum. When was Sung Yuri dropped from Queen Seon-deok? Was there a dramabeans update that I missed (I'll admit I havent been as regular a visitor as usual - keep getting distracted by work...). Or is this common knowledge that I should have known? What was the reason for the recasting?

@Liv,

MBC announced late last week that they were recasting Queen Seon-deok's role due to the passionate response from netizens regarding SYR's casting. Their official reason is that casting SYR caused problems with the casting of other roles (i.e. implicitly shifting the blame onto her.) I wasn't happy about the SYR casting, but MBC throwing her under the bus genuinely pissed me off. Potential candidates include Soo Ae, Han Ga In, Seo Ji Hye, Nam Sang Mi, etc. It seems clear that they want to cast a 20-something actress in this role.

SBS is probably looking at Tazza's success and thinking "well, crap, if we really thought Tazza would do *this* well, let's REALLY put $$$$ into the next gambling saga." Because this is a CWK story, it'll have a strong budget. If you're a Sung Yu Ri fan, this is the ideal next role after Hong Gil Dong, because this high profile show will be courting an older audience (i.e. SBS ajummas) than HGD and her other shows. She'll be 28 when the show airs and in excellent to transition into "adult soap" drama lead.
