Thumbs up for Radio Star

The 2006 Lee Jun-ik-directed film Radio Star has been adapted for the musical stage, and stars an old-school kpop star sixteen years after his debut: Kim Won-jun, who enjoyed most of his popularity in the ’90s.

The film starred Park Joong-hoon (Heaven’s Soldiers) as a has-been pop singer, with Ahn Sung-ki (May 18) as his manager. Stepping into those roles are Kim Won-jun — a former pop star playing a former pop star — and Jung Jun-ha, popular comedian and variety-show host as his manager, who alternates his role with musical actor Seo Beom-seok.

In the story, the main character is a pop star who enjoyed the height of popularity in 1988. Now it’s twenty years later, glory days long past. Prone to fighting and rabble-rousing, he gets an offer to DJ for a rundown radio station in a backwater town, where the producer knows nothing and the residents don’t care who he is.

Actor Seo Beom-seok explained that the musical doesn’t differ greatly from the movie, although it does draw the pop star’s psychological changes in more detail and has, obviously, more music.

Radio Star opens on November 18 and runs through December 31.

 
I don’t know much about the musical, but it sure looks like everyone’s having a blast at the open rehearsal on November 10. Seo Beom-seok rehearses with Kim Won-jun, red shirt, in the first pic below, while Jung Jun-ho hams it up with a red megaphone, a hat, and some backup performers:
