Preview event for Portrait of a Beauty
by javabeans
The film Portrait of a Beauty [미인도] held its press conference and VIP preview on November 4, and a bevy of VIPs showed up to catch an advance look at the risqué period film. It has attracted much comparison to the drama series Painter of the Wind (see trailer below), as both deal with the life of the Joseon artist Shin Yoon-bok. They also seem to share a similar cinematic flair, although obviously there are key differences between a film and a drama series.
The cast also talked to reporters at a press conference, led by lead star Kim Min-sun and her co-stars Kim Young-ho, Chu Ja-hyun, and Kim Nam-gil, who for some reason has changed his stage name from Lee Han (of Goodbye Solo, When Spring Comes). I don’t get this whole changing-names-mid-career thing (see also: Go Jun-hee). Why bother at this point?
Portrait of a Beauty opens to the public on November 13.
From left to right in the first picture, we have Kim Nam-gil, Kim Min-sun, director Jeon Yoon-soo, Chu Ja-hyun, and Kim Young-ho.
The VIPS:
I’m automatically annoyed when people wear sunglasses indoors (it’s a pet peeve), even if Kim Haneul (On Air) looks chic in her aviators. Also, Han Jae-seok (Lobbyist):
Lee Jin-wook (City of Glass) shows deference to his Air City co-star and sunbae Lee Jung-jae; Lee Tae-ran (A Rosy Life) always does casual-chic well:
Jung Ryeo-won (What Star Are You From) has the strange ability to look great in one photo (the first), and then like your crazy grandma wearing her old sofa in another photo:
Lee Bo-young (Queen of the Game) is looking a little tired, no? She looks like she’s just pulled an all-nighter in the last pic:
Lee Jong-hyuk (Rivals), mm. Lookin’ great in his bomber jacket:
By now we should have gotten the message that yes, clearly leather is in, as Han Ji-hye (East of Eden) shows us. Kim Sun-ah (My Name Is Kim Sam-soon) arrives with Shin-yi (Sex is Zero 2).
Yoon So-yi (City of Glass) comes to support her Goodbye Solo co-star Kim Nam-gil, looking like another crazy grandma victim. Except this time she’s not the grandma, she’s the protesting little girl forced to submit to granny’s wardrobe choices. Model Lee Hwa-sun looks way older than her 28 years. That neckerchief look has been out for a decade, and the Halloweeny color combo isn’t helping.
Kim Hye-soo (Modern Boy) is typically glam, while Lee Hana (Women in the Sun) schleps in in comfort. Also, Yoo Sun (Lobbyist):
Singer-actor Jeon Hye-bin (Witch Amusement), announcer Jung Ji-young, and Lee Gwang-ki (Spy Girl) with Lee Jong-won (Kingdom of the Wind):

yup looks like a beautiful movie!
however the trailer pretty much gave away the gist of the storyline, which is exactly the same as POTW... it's really quite unfair to POTW!

I read about this film a while ago at twitch.
It looks really interesting and I'd really like to see it because it's about the same painter as painter of the wind.
Visually it looks beautiful.

umm.... don't movies based on dramas/books/etc usually come out AFTER the latter has finished? o_O
Well, anyway, I'm going to wait until the drama is finished to watch the movie.

^ The movie is not based on the drama. Shin Yoon-bok was a real-life "genius artist" of the Joseon era. This movie and Painter of the Wind are both reinterpretations of Shin's life (as females passing themselves off as male), with Painter based specifically on a popular novel that was published in recent years.

I still find it funny how the oh so cliche scene of women bounding their breasts has to be the pivotal mark of showing cross dressing.

The movie looks a lot more explicit than POTW, and doesn't seem to spend as much time devoted to the awesome paintings. Also, isn't her lover not Kim Hong Do in the movie? In any case, coolness on having more squeeage material. :D

You too? I think it's rude. Unless you have a shiner you want to hide, whichis not the case most of the times, then it's just plain rude.

I would like to see this movie, if it's not a typical drama where the people go through so many atrocities only for one to die. I'm tired of drama's like that, I want something real where the people are together in the end. The sappy over emotional dramas are emotionally rough.
Peace

Kim Min-sun STILL LOOKS LIKE A GIRL WHEN SHE'S CROSSDRESSING LMAO.
I don't really have high hopes for this movie. Seems overly sexualized.

Personally speaking, if Lee Han wants to change his name to his birthname Kim Nam Gil, I think that is his choice. We should just be civilized and respect his decision. Anyway, it is his life...and as what I've heard it was also an advise from his seniors...
In my opinion, he have done a good performance here..This is one movie that is worth watching. I admire his versatility as an actor and as a person per se. He has also a good heart who is willing to help others in need.
Kudos to KNG & Kim Min Sun and to the rest of the cast & character of this film!!!
