Lee Jung ready for the Marines
by javabeans
There are several different ways to serve out one’s mandatory military enlistment — some, like Eric, serve desk jobs, usually due to injury (or pulling of bureaucratic strings); others go into the air force, like Ohn Joo-wan; and others (Jae Hee, for instance) serve regular active duty.
Singer and sometime actor Lee Jung (Unstoppable Wedding), pictured here, has finished his military training and will be joining the marine corps later this week to serve out the duration of his army duty.

Wow, I admire him.
It seems a lot of stars opt for the desk jobs. As much as I love Eric, I wish he had gone for the regular active duty. It feels like his "injury" is an excuse to stay with the easy desk job.
So, when I hear of celebrities who go for the active duty, which is not easy, I applaud them.

saryKim,
Eric was in a motor vehicle accident in 2006. I don't think it is fair to accuse him of trying to get out of this with an "excuse". It is not up to him whether he is able to join regular active duty or not. It is still fulfilling his military duty just in a different capacity.

Well, I suppose what you said makes sense. I just don't know whether Eric's injuries were serious enough for him to do the desk job. A lot of regular Korean citizens go to the harder active duty because they have no choice, and sometimes it's not fair to them when a celebrity is allowed to pass the harder duty for a desk job.
But still, even though I say I'm disappointed with him, I admire Eric for giving up his American citizenship and going to the army when he didn't have to. He's ten times better than Psy, anyway.

saryKIM,
That's what people say about Kim Jong Kook too...that such a muscular man does not deserve a desk job. But what do we know about their injuries to cast such unfair judgement on them based on limited knowledge of their injuries? I admit I do not know the extent of KJK's injuries, so I can't judge.
From what I read, Eric went through a couple physical tests before finally being assigned. The first one was early on in 2006-ish (his army talk started back then and he always said he will be enlisting) and then another test in 2008. It sounded like he wanted to be in the regular army...but could not make it because of his current physical condition. Watching one of Minwoo's recent variety show, they were asked to wish something while looking at the ocean, Minwoo said "Eric-ah, don't get injured again..." He was worried about Eric's 4 weeks-training at the Nonsan camp.
Now, have I managed to make myself sound like a stubborn fan of Eric's....LOL. Anyways...I think desk jobs are boring and compare that to marine corps and air force duty, desk jobs just sound like a mundane way to go through 2 years of one's life...If the celebrities can't do their normal jobs during these 2 years anyways...why not do something more substantial and exciting, right? So, I don't think desk job is necessary the thing that everybody strives for.

Agree with ginnie.
After Shinhwa 10th aniversary concert, Eric was in the hospital because of his back injury. He went through a military physical check up before they assigned him a desk job. HE DID NOT ASK FOR IT.
Nevertheless, doing desk job is still serving their country, they should all be proud.
